Bovino, Emily Verla. "On union, displaced: Capture and captivity with the Hong Kong Artist Union (HKAU)." Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art 8, no. 1 (July 1, 2021): 49–70. http://dx.doi.org/10.1386/jcca_00037_1.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2016, between Guangdong strikes in mainland China and Hong Kong’s unionization momentum, Hong Kong artist Wong Ka Ying posted a call on Facebook founding the Hong Kong Artist Union (HKAU). The gesture followed the mischievously named Come Inside, Hong Kong’s ‘first female artist duo’ created by Wong and artist Mak Ying Tung, which declared it would combat art’s ‘formalized system’. Ironically, one of its first actions was to enrol in a course on insurance that could help it formalize healthcare for artists. Come Inside welcomed the idea that opposition to the ‘system’ brings artists into it. HKAU took shape within this ‘trap’ when Wong and Mak started researching trade unions. ‘On Union, Displaced’ explores the past four years of HKAU existing as a union-not-yet-registered-as-an-official-union, a serious gesture of ludic conceptualism that plays with artistic freedom’s relationship to captivity and capture. Through Rey Chow’s theory of conceptual art as trap, it traces HKAU’s entanglement in the history of Hong Kong art groups, regional labour organizing, and efforts to reground the term ‘artist’. Studying HKAU requires various conceptual frameworks: Yuk Hui’s cosmotechnics; Laikwan Pang’s multiple sovereignties; Sandro Mezzandra and Brett Neilson’s border-as-method; Linda Lai Chiu-han’s performative research; and Frank Vigneron’s plastician. The article explores how being ‘plastic’ ‐ a union displaced; a union whose registration with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is perpetually negotiated ‐ has helped HKAU pose important questions about solidarity and sovereignty in art.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explain how post-1997 Hong Kong has been perceived in Taiwan and to critically evaluate the demonstration effects of Hong Kong under the “One Country, Two Systems” policy on cross-strait relations. Design/methodology/approach “Today’s Hong Kong, Tomorrow’s Taiwan” has become a dominant discourse in cross-strait relations in recent years. The paper has adopted discourse analysis of selected texts during and after the 2014 Sunflower Movement to elucidate the disapproval of the developments of post-handover Hong Kong and the construction of the Movement’s self-identity. Findings It has observed the following arguments which shaped the prevailing perceptions among critics of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy: political infiltration of China in Hong Kong could be extended to Taiwan in the sense that the Beijing authorities would adopt the identical approach to manipulate Taiwan through the cross-strait trading agreements; negative perceptions and images of China and Chinese capitals as a collective aggressor and a threat, raising fear and worries in both Hong Kong and Taiwan; and Kuomintang, as a ruling party at that time under the leadership of President Ma Ying-jeoh, was dismissed by protesters as an incompetent gatekeeper and defender of Taiwan’s interests. Originality/value The pervasive sentiments and perceptions about post-1997 Hong Kong has been articulated discursively by the young activists in Taiwan and Hong Kong into a statement – “Today’s Hong Kong, Tomorrow’s Taiwan” – which has brought about a somewhat unexpected bonding effect between Hong Kong and Taiwan through a strong disapproval of “One Country, Two Systems” and the China factor, which has be reproduced, delivered and circulated in both societies since 2014.

Abstract:
LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in English; abstract also in Chinese.Historically, sports was globally understood within the context of a masculine value system both in the Eastern and Western Societies. The 'Ying' and the 'Yang' stand for female and male in the Chinese culture implied that the female are more fragile and submissive where as the male being more aggressive and stronger. With 90% of the population in Hong Kong being Chinese, the cultural belief in a Chinese society that "Women's place should be in the home" has confined women to attend household chores and child bearing activities. In early 20th century, with the changing role of women in China and especially in Hong Kong, women are more active that they were a decade ago. Women are equal nowadays in a wide range of activities because they are better educated, play a more committed role and live a more active life. Thus, their participation in sports has increased in the past decade both in recreation and in competition. This paper attempts to report on Hong Kong women's participation in major games and also to recommend strategies which can further enhance women's place in sports.

Abstract:
Established by several independent filmmakers in Hong Kong in 1997, Ying E Chi (YEC) has facilitated the production and the distribution of Hong Kong independent films by means of VCD/DVD releases, video streaming, film festivals and community screenings. The non-profit body has played a key role in aiding local independent filmmakers’ projects, seeking film distribution opportunities locally and transnationally and building community networks in its home city. As the organizer of the Hong Kong Independent Film Festival since 2008, YEC has demonstrated its fluid translocal positioning by not just promoting the works of local filmmakers, but also introducing worldwide independent cinema to Hong Kong audiences. In retrospect, the development of YEC has reflected the transforming cultural landscape of Hong Kong to different degrees. From cinephiles and academics to the public, the audiences YEC has developed over the years indicates an ever-changing spectatorship in the making, bespeaking the various responses to the social environment under which these films were made, shown and watched. This article will use YEC as a case study to explore the mutual impacts between documentary films and their spectatorship which have shaped independent filmmakers’ production and distribution strategies continuously in postmillennial Hong Kong, particularly in the wake of the 2014 Umbrella Movement and the 2019 Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. The article will draw on interviews with local independent filmmakers, in order to understand how industry practices and dynamics have responded to identification, social events and audience behaviours over time. In this regard, spectatorship is understood as not just an embodied experience of film viewing, but also a series of affinities between the filmmaker, the audience and the film work. As a whole, the article will probe how the idea of citizen-spectator has evolved and has become inscribed in spectatorial engagement with independent documentary films, which has oscillated between audiences’ approval and authorities’ disapproval in postmillennial Hong Kong.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the emergence of civil disobedience (CD) movements in Hong Kong in the context of the notion of civil society (CS). Design/methodology/approach The paper begins by rigorously defining the notion of CD, as well as the concept of CS and tracing its development in Hong Kong over the past several decades. By using a model of CS typology, which combines the variables of state control and a society’s quest for autonomy (SQA), the paper aims to outline the historical development of CD movements in Hong Kong. It also discusses the recent evolution of CS and its relationship with CD movements, particularly focusing on their development since Leung Chun-ying became the Chief Executive in 2012. Finally, by using five cases of CD witnessed in the past several decades, the relationship between the development of CS and the emergence of CD in Hong Kong has been outlined. Findings Four implications can be concluded: first, CD cannot emerge when the state and society are isolated. Second, the level of SC and the scale of CD are positively related. Third, as an historical trend, the development of SQA is generally in linear progress; SQA starts from a low level (e.g. interest-based and welfare-based aims) and moves upwards to campaign for higher goals of civil and political autonomy. If the lower level of SQA is not satisfied, it can lead to larger scale CD in future. Fourth, the CD movement would be largest in scale when the state-society relationship confrontational and when major cleavages can be found within CS itself. Originality/value This paper serves to enrich knowledge in the fields of politics and sociology.

Wong, Victor, and Tat Chor Au-Yeung. "How do ideas and discourses construct youth policies? The case of Hong Kong." International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy 38, no. 3/4 (April 9, 2018): 280–94. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/ijssp-08-2017-0104.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to critically examine the youth narratives of Mr Leung Chun-ying, the Chief Executive (CE) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government between 2012 and 2017, which steered the directions of youth policies in Hong Kong. Design/methodology/approach Informed by the ideational school of institutionalism, a qualitative documentary study was conducted to analyse the policy addresses, speeches, and blog posts delivered by the then CE, which were all available on the website of the HKSAR Government. It was through a thematic analysis of the database that themes and sub-themes were generated for the discussion. Representative verbatim quotes are used for illustrating some of the youth policy ideas and discourses promoted under the Leung’s regime. Findings The findings suggest that the governing youth narratives could be categorised into two interrelated themes: behavioural patriotism and economic opportunism. The notions of youth development constructed in the narratives of Leung shape the definition of youth-related problems and solutions in relation to national identity and global competition. Research limitations/implications This study focusses on the previous term of HKSAR Government that cannot fully reveal the extent of policy continuities and changes. Yet, it could outline the overall picture and address the shortcomings of Hong Kong’s current youth policies viewed from both normative and cognitive perspectives. Methodological and analytical implications can be drawn for further studies on policy ideas and discourses. Originality/value The paper has two major contributions; the first of which is the illustration of an analytical framework connecting contents, tools, and justification of policies for capturing the dynamics and complexities of youth policies. Second, the findings of this study develop a critical understanding of neoliberal youth policies in both economic and moral senses that pose new challenges to young people and policy makers.

Abstract:
The concept of indefeasibility of title or interest of land is one of the core concepts in the Malaysian Torrens System, stipulated in section 340 of the National Land Code (Revised 2020). All registered title or interest over the land shall be guaranteed and remain unchallengeable against the whole world in the absence of fraud or other vitiating factors statutorily specified or judicially laid down. The debate of whether Malaysia recognised immediate indefeasibility or deferred indefeasibility has been settled by the Federal Court in the case of Tan Ying Hong v Tan Sian Sang & Ors since 2010. Nevertheless, the concept of deferred indefeasibility seems to be extended by the Federal Court in Kamarulzaman, which imposed a requirement of double bona fide. In essence, the court stated that for a purchaser to be regarded as an immediate purchaser, he must be a bona fide purchaser for value so that the purchaser following him could be a subsequent purchaser protected by the proviso of section 340(3) of the National Land Code provided he acted in bona fide with valuable consideration.

Abstract:
Reproductive barriers exist in some water lily crosses that result in low seed set and low breeding efficiency. We investigated pollen morphology, pollen viability, microspore development, pistil receptivity, and embryo and endosperm development in six water lily crosses using paraffin section as well as light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results indicated that the percentage of pollen with normal morphology ranged from 8.9% to 55.2%. The pollen viabilities of ‘Fen Zhuang’, ‘Bai Lu’, and ‘Hong Ying’ were 33.9%, 3.3%, and 20.7%, respectively. Stigmatic pollen germination peaked at 12 h after pollination and varied from 0.3 to 65.7 grains per stigma among the crosses. The production of embryos with normal morphology ranged from 0% to 43.6% at 5 days after pollination, from 0% to 31.4% at 15 days after pollination, and from 0% to 19.7% by 20 days after pollination. The seed sets of the six crosses were from 0% to 10.9%. Our results suggest that the low seed set in some crosses is the result of low pollen viability, low pistil receptivity, and embryo abortion.

Abstract:
This paper aims to highlight the significance of labour issues – namely, the minimum wage (MW) and standard working hours (SWH) – in shaping candidates’ electoral platforms in the 2012 chief executive (CE) election of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) under the sovereignty of the People's Republic of China (PRC). We first offer a brief review of labour politics regarding the MW case as a precursor to the SWH drafting and enactment process. We then provide an analytical delineation of some of the labour and socio-economic dimensions of the CE electoral contest by comparing the candidates’ campaign planks in relation to SWH. We then attempt to predict the likely course of the SWH debate under the leadership of Leung Chun-ying, who eventually won the CE election and assumed power on 1 July 2012. We conclude by examining Leung's social engineering attempts to increase popular support amongst low- and middle-income (LMI) households as part of his long-term strategy for the 2017 CE elections and his broader Beijing-entrusted political agenda.

Abstract:
Withering is an important process step in black tea production, and the degree of withering directly determines the quality and flavor of black tea. Presently, the judgment of the degree of the withering of black tea at home and abroad mainly depends on the experience of tea masters, which is highly subjective and quickly leads to the inconsistent quality of finished tea. Based on these reasons, this thesis takes Ying Hong No. 9 black tea as the research object, extracts the spectral information of 50 tea leaves in four time periods using hyperspectral imaging technology and an image processing algorithm, and classifies them using a support vector machine, K-value proximity, random forest algorithm, and BP neural network, and the experimental results show that the spectral information of tea leaves in different periods has some variability. The BP neural network in The classification accuracy on the test set reached 73.3%, which was significantly better than the other three algorithms. Therefore, it is feasible to use hyperspectral imaging technology and related classification algorithms to nondestructively identify and classify the water content of black tea leaves during the tail-withering process.

Abstract:
BackgroundPsoriasis (PsO) and musculoskeletal manifestations are common among patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). A shared-care model between rheumatologists and dermatologists has been advocated to promote early diagnosis and improve management care. Data from Asia is scanty. Patients’ and learners’ experience of shared-care models are seldom explored.ObjectivesWe described the set-up of a new shared-cared PsA-PsO clinic incorporating service, education and research between rheumatologist and dermatologist for PsA. We describe the patients’ and learners’ experience of this shared-care model.MethodsA combined care clinic was newly set up in 2019. Referrals were internal through either specialty. Each patient was first seen by a trainee, followed by both a dermatologist and rheumatologist simultaneously in the same consultation room. We collected patients’ and learners’ experience through self-administered survey.ResultsFrom May 2019 to January 2020, data from 44 visits (55% new referrals, 45% follow-up) from 28 patients were captured in the PsA-PsO clinic. 50% of cases were referred from either specialty. 34% were referred for diagnostic doubts, 66% were for therapeutic issues. 61% of patients continued follow-up in the PsA-PsO clinic, and 39% discharged back to respective care. From patients’ experience rated on scale from 0-10, median (interquartile range, IQR) rating of the care was 8 (7, 8). 69.2% and 96% of patients would recommend the care to others. Abstract:
Carrot (Daucus carota L.) is an economically important vegetable crop in China. In August 2008, a disease was observed on carrot in Inner Mongolia. The symptoms appeared as dry rot lesions on root surface, expressing light brown cankers with defined rounded or irregular shapes (1,3). The average disease incidence was up to 80% in Tuo Ke Tuo County. The disease has been a serious problem in these two counties since then, especially where consecutive carrot cropping was practiced. Carrot roots with typical dry rot symptoms were washed with tap water. Root tissues near the margin of necrotic lesions were excised, surface sterilized with 1% NaOCl for 3 min, and rinsed with sterile distilled water three times. The disinfected tissue was placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) in a petri dish. Plates were incubated at 25 ± 1°C in the dark for 4 days. Fusarium single spore isolates were obtained from characteristic colonies (1). Three isolates (CF1, CF2, and CF3) were used for further study. The isolates were identified as Fusarium spp. on the basis of microscopic morphology on PDA. CF1 produced pink pigment, abundant falciform macroconidia of 14.7 to 38.2 × 4.5 to 5.7 μm with 2 to 3 septates, and elliptic microconidia of 7.5 to 15.1 × 3.3 to 5.4 μm with none or one septate. CF2 and CF3 produced light blue pigment, abundant falciform macroconidia of 16.4 to 34.4 × 4.0 to 6.1 μm with 2 to 3 septates, and elliptic microconidia of 6.7 to 10.7 × 3.0 to 4.9 μm with none or one septate. They were further identified and confirmed by PCR. The PCR involved amplifying the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA using genomic DNA as the template with universal primers ITS1 and ITS4 (2). The PCR products were sequenced. BLAST analysis of these sequences against the GenBank database determined the taxonomy of the isolates. The sequence of CF1 was 99% identical to F. oxysporum (Accession No. KC594035); sequences of CF2 and CF3 were 99% identical to F. solani (KC215123). To confirm the pathogenicity of the isolates, mature carrot roots (cv. Hong Ying 2) were inoculated with mycelial plugs (5 mm in diameter) cut from the margin of actively growing colonies on PDA plates. One mycelial plug was placed on each carrot root, with the mycelial side facing the root. PDA plugs were used for controls. Each treatment had five replicates. The inoculated roots were incubated in a humid chamber (90% RH) at 25°C. Four days after incubation, mycelia of the isolates developed and covered most of the surface of carrot roots, and brown rot lesions were observed on all inoculated roots, while the controls remained symptomless. This experiment was repeated. In another trial, carrot seeds (cv. Hong Ying 2) were sown in sterilized soil in pots (30 × 25 cm opening) with 15 seeds per pot. The soil was infested with either CF1, CF2, or CF3 by adding spore suspension to make the final concentration of 1 × 104 CFU/g soil. Plants grown in non-infested soil served as controls. There were three replicates per treatment. All the treated pots were placed in a field. After 13 weeks, the same symptoms of dry rot were observed as previously described. No symptoms were observed on the control plants. The trial was repeated. Symptomatic tissues from the inoculated roots were sampled and the pathogen was re-isolated, and identified using PCR. To our knowledge, this is the first report of F. oxysporum and F. solani causing dry rot of carrot in China. References: (1) H. Abe et al. Abstract:
Abstract Brain metastases are diagnosed in 20-40% of all cancer patients. Despite the advancements in neurosurgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, one-year survival of metastatic brain tumor patients still within a single digit such that brain metastases constitute about 20% of annual cancer deaths. These facts clearly indicate a critical need for better understanding of mechanisms that promote the growth of brain metastases. Emerging data, including ours, indicate that different types of metastatic cancer cells leverage dissimilar sets of neurotransmitters to favor their outgrowth in the brain. However, there are over sixty types of neurotransmitters in the brain being synthesized and released by various types of neural cells, we need a systemic investigation of how they mediate the pathogenesis of brain metastases in concert. Since neurotransmitters, gliotransmitters, neurotrophic factors, and neural cytokines, called neuroactive substances, are the most abundant and key intercellular communication signals in the brain, we hypothesize that tumor cells leverage these neuroactive substances to assimilate into neural circuitry via communicating with neural cells including neurons, astrocytes, microglia, oligodendrocyte, and others, in promoting the vicious circle of tumor-neural crosstalk during brain metastasis development. By performing spatial transcriptomics analysis on mouse brain sections bearing metastatic tumors, we found that tumor lesions at different locations and even tumor-surrounding areas in the brain regions could be differentiated into different cellular clusters based on gene transcriptomic expressions. We further predicted several paracrine and autocrine signaling between and within tumors as well as tumor-surrounding neural niches in different tumor locations (e.g., centers or edges), of different tumor sizes, and at various tumor development stages, using our Cell-Cell Communication Explorer (CCC-Explorer) modeling software. Functional experiments were conducted to demonstrate that cell type-specific depletion of the secreted NSs deactivated the activities of corresponding receptors and downstream signaling in co-cultured metastatic brain tumor cells. Characterizing spatiotemporal tumor-neural crosstalk in the brain metastatic niche would provide a new strategy in the development of novel and effective therapeutics of brain metastases. Abstract:
Abstract Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-engineered cell therapy, which leverages genetically modified immune cells to generate a tailored immune response, has revolutionized cancer treatment (Dougan et al., 2021; Hong et al., 2020). The number, type and indications of clinical trials for CAR-engineered cell therapies have increased rapidly in recent years (MacKay et al., 2020). However, serious and potentially life-threaten toxicities, such as on-target, off-tumor effects, remain a major limitation of CAR-engineered cell therapies (Dougan et al., 2021; MacKay et al., 2020). To better understand the effects of CAR-directed immunotherapy, a systematic single-cell-level dissection of the expression of divergent CAR targets in various cell types across different normal tissues is urgently required. We analyzed the expression of 591 CAR targets, including 71 that were employed in clinical trials up to January 2021 and 520 that were predicted to have favorable safety profiles (MacKay et al., 2020), in two independent single-cell cohorts, including 342,755 adult cell scRNA-seq data from human cell landscape (HCL) based on Microwell-seq (Han et al., 2020), and 84,363 adult cell scRNA-seq data from adult human cell atlas (AHCA) based on 10× Genomics (He et al., 2020). We used a stringent cutoff by defining a CAR target as a potentially risky gene (PRG) if it was measurable in more than 100 non-immune cells and more than 2% of the total cells in at least three normal tissues. We identified 92 and 88 PRGs from HCL and AHCA by employing this criterion, with 57 PRGs shared in both HCL and AHCA datasets (hypergeometric test p = 7.17×10-29), suggesting the robustness of our analysis. To aid the research community in the design of CAR targets, we developed a user-friendly data portal, CAR target gene toxicity at single-cell level (CARTSC) (https://hanlab.tamhsc.edu/CARTSC/), to allow for browsing and searching the single target and logical ‘and’ design switch expressions at the single-cell level. Abstract:
Abstract Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, with over 5 million cases reported in 2021. UVB exposure derived from sunlight is the major carcinogenic driver of skin cancer and poses a major public health risk. In response to UVB exposure, keratinocytes must activate DNA repair pathways to avoid mutagenesis. In addition to DNA repair pathways, cells initiate well-coordinated DNA damage response pathways to facilitate the repair process, including arresting global transcription. Here we report the use of kethoxal-assisted single-strand DNA-Sequencing (KAS-Seq) technology to profile the transcriptional dynamics that underlie the DNA damage response upon UVB exposure. Mechanistically, KAS-Seq involves the addition of an azide-tagged kethoxal group (N3-kethoxal) to DNA samples, which then reacts with guanines on single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). A “KAS signal” is therefore only obtained when DNA is unwound, allowing the N3-kethoxal reaction with accessible guanines to occur. Accordingly, in response to DNA damage, DNA can form ssDNA bubbles in order to facilitate DNA damage recognition and repair processes. KAS-Seq is therefore a suitable method to profile the transcriptional dynamics that occur in response to UVB-induced DNA damage. Here we show that UVB exposure in normal human keratinocytes (NHEK) cells induces a temporal and dynamic reprogramming in transcription using KAS-Seq. In terms of global transcription, our data show that the greatest loss of KAS signal occurs rapidly between 30mins and 3hrs post-UVB exposure, signifying transcriptional arrest. Interestingly, KAS signal is regained between 6-24hrs post-UVB, which is representative of a transition towards transcriptional recovery and induction of DNA damage processes. Furthermore, a more discrete and targeted analysis shows that the gain and loss of KAS signals primarily occur within the gene body, followed by promoter and intergenic regions. Overall, our data shows that transcriptional control in response to UVB-induced DNA damage is both dynamic and temporal. Further analysis is required to identify which transcriptional phenotype (transcriptional arrest or transcriptional recovery) is the most deleterious to the cell and DNA damage repair processes when disrupted. Additionally, we aim to further elucidate the molecular mechanisms that underlie these global changes in transcription, which will provide expanded insights into the wide-ranging oncogenic mechanisms that underlie UVB exposure. Abstract:
Abstract This study examines tone mergers in Hong Kong Cantonese from the perspective of variationist sociolinguistics. It approaches the issue of whether Cantonese has six or nine tones by focusing on two ongoing tone mergers: (1) the merger of yin qu T3 and yang qu T6, and (2) the merger of lower yin ru T8 and yang ru T9. Speech data from fifty native Cantonese speakers in Hong Kong were collected and analyzed. The change routes and constraint patterns of the two mergers were compared and found to be similar. The results support the six-tone system for Hong Kong Cantonese. This study serves as an example of how the variationist approach can be used in phonological debates.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective: Pyrotinib, an oral irreversible pan-HER receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, showed promising efficacy and manageable safety profiles in the treatment of HER-2 positive breast cancer. Diarrhea is the most common adverse event associated with pyrotinib. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and management of diarrhea secondary to pyrotinib in Chinese patients with HER-2 positive breast cancer. Methods: In this prospective real-world study, consecutive patients aged over 18 with HER-2 positive breast cancer and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) of 0-2 who planned to receive pyrotinib-based regimens for at least 21 days were included. Pyrotinib-treated patients and those with preexisting gastrointestinal conditions were excluded. There were no planned management strategy or primary prophylaxis for diarrhea, while loperamide, montmorillonite powder or Golden Bifid (a live combined Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Streptococcus Thermophilus tablet) were recommended. Treatment was given in accordance with routine clinical practice by investigators. For patients developed grade 3 or higher diarrhea, pyrotinib was suspended until the diarrhea improving to grade 1 or less, and secondary prophylaxis (such as loperamide, loperamide plus montmorillonite powder, or loperamide plus Golden Bifid) was administrated before pyrotinib resumption. The baseline characteristics of patients and details of diarrhea (onset time, duration, severity according to the National Cancer Institute-Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.03, treatment and prognosis) were collected. Results: Between August, 2020 and April, 2022, a total of 107 eligible patients were included, with a median age of 54 (range: 25-81) years old. Most patients (93.5%) had an ECOG PS of 0-1, and 51 patients (47.7%) were hormone receptor positive. A total of 46 patients (43.0%) received pyrotinib in the early stage and 61 (57.0%) in the advanced stage. Sixty-nine cases (64.5%) used pyrotinib-containing combination therapy (including 40 combined with capecitabine, 13 combined with trastuzumab, and 16 combined with other regimens), and 38 (35.5%) received pyrotinib alone. Ninety-eight cases (91.6%) reported diarrhea of any grade. Grade 1, 2 and 3 diarrhea occurred in 78 (72.9%), 9 (8.4%) and 11 (10.3%) patients, respectively. The median time to first onset of diarrhea of any grade was 2.5 (1-12) days, and the duration of first onset was 4 (1-24) days. The cumulative duration of diarrhea was 10 (1-60) days. Sixty-four, two, thirty, two patients used loperamide alone, montmorillonite powder alone, loperamide plus montmorillonite powder and loperamide plus Golden Bifid for the treatment of diarrhea, respectively. Eleven (10.3%) and seven (6.5%) patients experienced pyrotinib dose reduction and pyrotinib discontinuation. For 11 patients suffered grade 3 diarrhea, the median time to first onset of grade 3 diarrhea was 9 (4-14) days. Two, four and five patients administrated loperamide, loperamide plus Golden Bifid and loperamide plus montmorillonite powder as their secondary prophylaxis. Ten of eleven had grade 1 or 2 diarrhea after secondary prophylaxis, while one patient still suffered grade 3 diarrhea. All of them (11/11) held the pyrotinib dose. The incidence rate of constipation of all patients was 3.7%, which did not increase after treatment or secondary prophylaxis for diarrhea. Conclusion: In this study, the majority of patients developed pyrotinib associated diarrhea, and most of them were grade 1. About 10% patients reported grade 3 diarrhea, which can be managed by loperamide-based treatment and secondary prophylaxis. Table 1. Abstract:
Abstract: This paper focuses on how Chinese intellectuals discussed and researched rainbows in late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. Many of them considered the rainbow as a phenomenon that occurred under certain conditions of sunshine and raindrops, which could be described with terms related to qi <graphic href="CUL2020k_87_fig0001.jpg"/> of yin/yang <graphic href="CUL2020k_87_fig0002.jpg"/>. Some of them had the knowledge of duplicating rainbows by “spraying water opposite to the sun”. There were also popular conceptions that rainbow was a sign of salaciousness and rainbow could siphon water, both of which had a long history in Chinese context. Scholars also discussed other phenomena similar to rainbow such as solar halo, lunar halo, parhelion and parselene. Those discussions were not held in wider society, yet they were the sign of how Chinese intellectuals rationalized their research into natural philosophy.

Abstract:
AbstractIn Hong Kong, even though the Bill of Rights Ordinance (the localized version of ICCPR), Sex Discrimination Ordinance and a series of legal reforms were enacted and introduced respectively in 1991 and 1994, gender discrimination in legal discourse still persists. Chinese customary law, which only recognises the male's right to build small houses in the New Territories, remains an exception under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance; and the oppression of (female) sex workers is not yet recognized. Some politicians argue that discrimination is inherent in the Han-Chinese culture of harmony, which is impossible to understand from the Euro-American individual-centric perspective of gender equality. They further quote Daoist YIN-YANG cosmology where YANG/Male/Masculinity is supreme; and Confucian Constant Virtues where women are marginalized as examples showing that Han-Chinese culture, where harmony is hegemonized, cannot tolerate or accept gender equality. This paper adopts a critical perspective in examining the above arguments and points out not only that a “pure” version of patriarchal socio-legal culture in the name of harmony hegemony does not exist, but (indigenous) culture should always be meticulously and critically represented in order to reproduce “justice”. I would also argue that it is possible to scrutinize and explore the spaces of resistance within the Hong Kong Han-Chinese socio-legal culture, where foreign theories of gender justice/equality and related legal reforms can be examined.

Abstract:
In the Far East, Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, is the one who "listens to the cries of the world". Depicted by gigantic white statues, she is the feminine personification of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and represents an archetypal figure dear to Chinese women and men. In Hong Kong and in Taipei, Taiwan, she is consulted by throwing two moon blocks or ritual sticks according to the rules of Chinese divination. The goddess is a real presence who acts in a real way: when questioned, she answers, defying a synchronistic and extraverted field of knowledge and meaning. The author highlights the importance of approaching in a cross-cultural, sensitive way, such a slippery cultural phenomenon as the use of divination in that part of China, investigating a possible parallelism between this form of dialogue with the goddess Guan Yin and the Jungian method of active imagination. Developing a cross-cultural sensibility towards Chinese divinatory practices as Chinese clients do in their country, without either prejudicially declaring them superstition or considering them as a form of magic, can have transformative effects both on Eastern and Western imagery. In the case of Chinese people, this sensibility develops the ability to examine, psychologically, a phenomenon whose deeper meaning often remains unconscious. In the case of Westerners, this sensibility creates an experience of active imagination in extraverted form. In both cases, when approached from a Jungian perspective, the Chinese divinatory practice leads to experiencing the transformative reality of the extraverted and synchronistic imaginal action.

Abstract:
Statement of the problem. The twentieth century marked an increased interest in polyphonic music. The geography of polyphonic works for piano expanded significantly and a creative development of many Chinese composers, writing polyphonic piano pieces, took place. Today, polyphonic pieces make up a significant part of the piano repertoire in China, but they are little studied by musicologists and performers. The objective of this study – to reveal the contribution of Chinese composers to the creation of polyphonic piano repertoire of the XX – early XXI century. Analysis of the research and publications on the theme. А large number of modern authors study polyphony from the point of physical and mathematical research methods (Igarashi, Yu. & Ito, Masashi & Ito, Akinori, 2013; Weiwei, Zhang & Zhe, Chen, & Fuliang, Yin, 2016; Li, Xiaoquan et al. others, 2018). This approach does not reveal the factual musical component of polyphonic genres. In the 20th century, musicologists explored polyphony in musical folklore (Wiant, 1936; Fan Zuyin, 2004; Li Hong, 2015) and in professional Chinese composing (Sun Wei-bo, 2006, Winzenburg, 2018). The scientific novelty. This article studies the role of Chinese composers in the development of the world polyphonic piano repertoire of the XX – early XXI century. The methodological basis for the analysis of polyphonic works was the theoretical concepts of P. Hindemith, Peng Cheng, Fang Zuin, Li Hong, Sun Wei-bo. The results of the study. The research outcomes demonstrate the evolutionary development of the genre diversity of Chinese piano polyphony as well as those composers who created magnificent musical pieces. Conclusions. Chinese composers have fully mastered the art of modern counterpoint, represented by the genres of polyphonic program pieces (He Lu Ting), invention (Xiao Shu Xian, Du Qian, Sun Yun Yin, Chen Chen Quang), polyphonic suite (Ma Gui), large polyphonic cycle ( He Shao, Chen Hua Do, Xiao Shu Xian), fugue (Li Jun Yong, Yu Su Yan, Chen Gang, Tian Lei Lei, Duan Ping Tai, Zheng Zhong, Xiao Shu Xian) and small cycle “Prelude and Fugue” (Ding Shan Te, Chen Zhi Ming, Wang Li Shan). Creatively assimilating and rethinking the experience of Western polyphonists, Chinese composers have filled their polyphonic works with national features, firmly linking them with the origins of Chinese traditional and folk music. The polyphonic way of transmitting musical material becomes the most expressive at the moments of profound creativity and musical dramatization.

Abstract:
The article analyzes for the first time the adaptation in China of the largest piano school of the Moscow Conservatory — the school of A. B. Goldenweiser. Aram Tatulyan was his student at the Moscow Conservatory in 1930s–1940s. Each pianist-teacher relies on the school he received, and this was the case with Aram Tatulyan. His name is now almost forgotten in Russia, but is deeply revered in China, where he became one of the pioneers at the piano faculty. The lessons of young Chinese pianists with talented Russian teachers have been crowned more than once with victories at international competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The key to the amazing success of Liu Shikong, Yin Chengzong, Zhou Guangren and others was the assimilation of pedagogical principles and methods of the Russian school — particularly A. B. Goldenweiser. By passing on his experience to Chinese students, Tatulyan laid a solid foundation for the formation and future flourishing of the pianist specialty in China. The scientific objectives of the article are to reconstruct Tatulyan's learning path according to the archives of the Moscow Conservatory, as well as to form a generalized idea of the fundamentals and methods of A. B. Goldenweiser's piano school.

Abstract:
This study investigated the effectiveness of Chinese therapeutic food on female reproductive hormones in a double –blind, placebo –controlled clinical trial. Chinese kiwi fruit extract (Hong En No. 1) was provided for Australian peri-menopausal women for one month. Chinese medical assessment and urinary 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE) and 16alpha-hydroxyestrone (16alpha-OHE) tests were conducted. Twenty-six urinary samples (pre and post-trial) which met the requirement of testing were analysed, the ratio 2-OHE:16alpha-OHE of pre-trial (1.18 ± 0.34) and post-trial (0.97 ± 0.29) in the control group (n = 6) decreased but showed no significant change, this ratio of pre-trial (1.44 ± 0.16) and post-trial (1.65 ± 0.21) in the treatment group (n = 7) indicated an improvement ( P = 0.066), which results in beneficial hormone regulation. The Chinese medicine assessment indicated that the patterns of disharmony mainly include Liver Qi stagnation and Liver-Kidney Yin deficiency patterns. No significant change observed in the control group, significant score reduction of the patterns of disharmony was achieved at post-trial in the treatment group, which indicates an improvement of general health condition.

Yin, Jian-Hua, Jun-Gao Zhu, and James Graham. "A new elastic viscoplastic model for time-dependent behaviour of normally and overconsolidated clays: theory and verification." Canadian Geotechnical Journal 39, no. 1 (February 1, 2002): 157–73. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/t01-074.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents a new three-dimensional elastic viscoplastic (3D EVP) constitutive model for the time-dependent stress–strain behaviour of both normally consolidated and overconsolidated clays. There are two major new developments in the 3D EVP model: (i) incorporation of a nonlinear creep function with a limit for the creep volume strain under isotropic stressing conditions; (ii) adoption of a new loading surface function with a smooth shape on the π plane. Based on the "equivalent time" concept of Yin and Graham, the formulation of the new 3D EVP model is derived using the new nonlinear creep function and loading surface function. A new approach to determining all model parameters is presented. The 3D EVP model is calibrated using data from one conventional isotropic stress creep test and consolidated-undrained triaxial tests on soft Hong Kong marine deposits (HKMD). The model is verified by comparing model results with those from both normally and overconsolidated triaxial tests on HKMD and a mixture of kaolin and bentonite.Key words: creep, time-dependent, viscoplastic, equivalent time, stress–strain, constitutive model, verification, clay.

Abstract:
In the digital age, it is expected that students will not only have experience and passion for reading, but also will develop their reading skills to learn. Reading is one of the most important skills that develop the human and increase life-long learning capacity. Individuals can improve their personal, moral and emotional qualities to strengthen their sense of responsibility towards the family, society, nation and the world through reading. The individual can develop his personal, moral and emotional qualities in order to strengthen the sense of responsibility towards his family, society, nation and the world through reading. The life experiences of elementary school students are limited, but effective readings help to expand their horizons and perspectives. People can bring their knowledge and experiences together by reading. At the time of reading, students should have the ability to put out the deep meaning of the text, their learning experiences, and the ability to put new knowledge on their prior knowledge to build meaning. The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is one of the most comprehensive educational research at the international level. The PISA survey, conducted every three years since 2000, aims to measure students' achievement in science, reading skills and mathematics. When our country's reading performance is compared with other countries, it is seen that it is ranked 50th among the 70 countries participating in the program in 2015. Hong Kong, which participated in the same program, appears to be the 2nd. The purpose of this research is to examine the "whole school approach" adopted by Hong Kong, performed high reading achievement in 2012 and 2015 PISA exams, during the learning and development of reading and the studies it has carried out based on it. For this purpose, Hong Kong's Basic Education Program Guide will be reviewed. The sections in which the success of reading in the PISA examinations and the effects of the whole school approach on this success were examined by the researchers and translated into Turkish. The data obtained were reviewed with language experts. The content analysis of the data has been made and three themes have been created that reveal all aspects of the (whole school approach TO: (1) Identify the Whole school approach (WSA), (2) School responsibilities in Whole school approach (WSA) and (3) Stakeholders' responsibilities in the Whole school approach (WSA). The results of the research show that there are responsibilities and responsibilities to school administrators, school program development experts, teacher-librarians, teachers, parents and students in improving reading performance with the whole school approach. It was concluded that the task and responsibility of gaining reading performance and habit should not be left to teachers only. In addition, success in improving reading performance with the whole school approach can be achieved in proportion of each stakeholder performing their duties.Extended English summary is in the end of Full Text PDF (TURKISH) file.
