Abstract:

"From feminism to postfeminism : a feminist critique of the works of Hong Ying and Li Bihua." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2014. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/20346/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to investigate the development of female consciousness under the impact of Western feminist ideologies in Chinese female writings by examining specific works of Hong Ying and Li Bihua using a feminist and a postfeminist approach. By analysing the earlier and later works of Hong Ying and Li Bihua, one is able to recognise the shifts from feminist to postfeminist ideas that are apparent in the works of the two authors. The thesis is divided into four main sections and will include; the feminist and post-feminist ideologies of the two aforementioned authors' works, the different representations of women in the authors' original texts with their sequential movie and TV adaptations, and finally the impact of internet weblogs on Chinese women writings. In the first two core chapters, I use both feminist and post-feminist approaches to scrutinize the earlier and later literary work of Hong Ying and Li Bihua. Despite the fact that the two authors have very different writing styles, their common interest is to rewrite Chinese historical women with a hint of feminist rationale. Therefore, through comparing and contrasting the feminist ideologies in both writers' works, the development of feminism in and the impact of Western Feminism on China can be revealed. Apart from literary texts, owing to the widespread movie and TV adaptations of the two authors' literary writings, I examine the ramifications caused by the difference between the original and the adapted forms of representation of feminist ideas in the works of the Hong Ying and Li Bihua in the third core chapter. Seeing that both authors also maintain Internet weblogs (blogs), which are accessed by numerous Internet users, especially in China, therefore, in my last core chapter, I employ a cyberfeminist approach to read the blogs of the authors in order to show how feminism works different on the Internet.

Abstract:
Ever since the curriculum reform was launched, 'Reading to Learn' has been one of the four key tasks initiated. The result shown in Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS,2011) reflected that the reading ability of Hong Kong Primary students is among the best in the world, whereas their reading motivation ranking the last. Researchers also found in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA, 2009) conducted among secondary students that their metacognitive level is the lowest among all the secondary students in South-east Asian districts. It reflected that Hong Kong students lack self-regulation and comprehension monitoring awareness in reading. This dissertation is written in support of an action research and a case study. It aims to discuss the impact on the implementation of teaching of reading strategies on four different primary students, who are of diverse ability on comprehension. In the action research, the researcher tries to enhance students' comprehension monitoring awareness through introducing the K-W-L Chart and Directed Reading and Thinking Activity. In the case study, the researcher makes use of think aloud activities and student interviews to collect and analyze the qualitative data obtained. Together with the quantitative analysis, the researcher studies the reading strategies used among the four selected primary 4 students as well as their understanding toward reading strategies before and after they received the teaching in the process. The research result reflects that teaching reading strategies has a significant effect on enhancing student's reading comprehension monitoring awareness among students, especially the lower ability students. Furthermore, this research makes a few practical suggestions on how to enhance students' reading comprehension awareness in daily teaching.

Abstract:
This research investigated Chinese as second language (CSL) learner’s willingness to communicate (WTC) both inside and outside classroom in one of international schools, Hong Kong. The research objects are 170 Chinese Language B learners from an English School Foundation (ESF) international school. The main methodology adopted here was quantitative method. Classroom observations by researcher and self-reports by students were firstly done to collect background data, and then five scales were employed to do the main investigation, including a WTC Inside–the-classroom Scales (WTCIS), a WTC Outside-the-classroom Scale (WTCOS), a Language Anxiety Scale (LAS), a Motivation Scale (MS) and a Self-perceived Communicative Competence Scale (SCCS). The research objectives were to explore the general situation of CSL learners’ WTC, and the specific characteristics as well as possible differences of their WTC inside and outside the classroom; then to further examine the possible affecting variables from both background and psychological perspectives including gender, age, Chinese language proficiency, mother tongue, social support, personality and attitudes towards learning Chinese, which were regarded as background variables, and language anxiety, motivation and self-perceived communicative competence, which were regarded as psychological variables. After that, data was processed and analyzed by SPSS 19.0 for hypothesis verification. Finally, pedagogical implications on how to improve CSL learners’ WTC both inside and outside classroom were generalized from the study. The major findings showed that: (1) the general WTC of CSL learners from this school were slightly on the low side, between the Lower and Middle level, and the WTC inside the classroom was comparatively higher than outside of classroom. (2) On overall WTC, there was no significant difference between male and female students. But inside the classroom, girls were more likely to ask questions and pay more attention on language details than boys, while boy were more active to be the presenters and voice out in public. Outside the classroom, boys were more willing to communicate with strangers or chat online with friends in Chinese. (3) No significant WTC difference was found between Diploma Program (DP) and Middle Years Program (MYP), but DP CSL learners showed more willingness to make public speech, to be more of an inquirer in problems, and to do more generalization in speaking. (4) Among DP group, significant positive correlation was found between language proficiency and WTC, suggesting that the more proficient CSL learners showed higher WTC, and vice versa. (5) The more proficient group were more willing to speak Chinese voluntarily than the less proficient ones, implying that the more competent language learners are more likely to the take the initiative in communication. (6) CSL learners with more social supports to learn Chinese showed higher WTC, and a significant positive correlation was found here. (7) Students with Cantonese as mother tongue had higher WTC than their English as mothertougue counterparts, and this difference was more obviously outside of classroom. (8) Extroverted students showed significantly higher WTC inside of the classroom than the introverted. (9) Students who liked learning Chinese demonstrated higher WTC than those who didn’t. (10) Students’ motivation to learn Chinese and their SPCC were both on the high side, and both correlated positively on WTC, with motivation correlated more closely on outside WTC while SPCC more on inside WTC. Students showed slight lower anxiety level in speaking Chinese. Anxiety had significant negative correlation with WTC, and it mattered more inside than outside of classroom. No matter for WTC inside or outside, SPCC was the most predictive variable among the three.

Freudenberg, Benjamin. "Yin as the specificity of Hong Kong cinema: mediated tradition and critical potential." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2015. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/188.

Full text
Abstract:
In the analysis of Hong Kong cinema side notes on the relationship between particular motifs or stylistic features and Chinese intellectual history are relatively common. Fleshing out this relationship, however, is problematic due to the intricacies of Chinese thought as well as pace and volume of popular culture. In spite of this difficult relation, the thesis reconstructs the narrative and stylistic development of post-war Hong Kong cinema against relevant aspects of pre-modern Chinese thought, demonstrating how the latter provides an effective framework in which to explicate prominent motifs and visual architecture. Yin, or ‘concealment’, furnishes the conceptual space for the encounter, isolating relevant elements in the Legalist, Confucian, Daoist, and aesthetic canon and informing the analysis of select Hong Kong films. The body of the dissertation is comprised of four chapters; each juxtaposes an aspect of pre-modern thought with cinematic texts chosen to illustrate distinct discursive movements around themes essential to an understanding of post-/colonial Hong Kong modernity. Beginning with the depiction of the legal order, the first chapter details the narrative characterization of modern law and its subversion in the extra-legal space of the jianghu. The debate between Legalism and Confucian natural law thus ‘grounds’ a pop-cultural suspicion regarding the efficacy of positive law as such. The following chapter tackles the issue of identity: recounting early attempts to stabilize a traditional culturalist version of belonging, narrative criticism of traditional patriarchy and Western hegemony, and recent fears of re-colonization by the motherland, Chineseness is shown to denote an event eluding popular culture. A third chapter interrogates the construction of fate and, implicit in it, narrativity as such. A discussion of Daoism - expressing both a faith in ontologically guaranteed restoration and a critical insight into virtual potential concealed in acculturation - connects pre-modern thought to Hong Kong cinema which first embraces restoration in popular formula and later attempts to escape its circularity. The fourth chapter focuses on stylistic evolution; an influential pre-modern treatise on the aesthetics of landscape painting provides the framework for an account of the characteristic sinicization of visual architecture subjecting space and time to momentum in careful framing and editing. While this style is characteristic of action-oriented plots, it also conditions aesthetic refutations and recent returns to more realist approaches. Conceptually explicating Hong Kong cinema through Chinese intellectual tradition runs the risk of merely subsuming the former to the latter. This would miss the characteristic mediation of tradition as it is ‘resuscitated’ in popular culture, its imbrication in the contemporary situation. As such, the thesis cannot evade addressing the meaning of this mediation, a task requiring additional conceptual tools. Critical theory fulfills this purpose throughout the main body of the thesis supporting arguments regarding the critical potential of mediated tradition within post-/colonial modernity. A concluding chapter summarizes the thesis’ findings, reflects on the aesthetic impasses of mass culture even where it expresses discontent with modernity, and reiterates the persisting relevance of Adorno’s critique of the culture industry, especially for the analysis of popular culture.

Kim, Gumsun. "A question of equality : women and women's art under patriarchal society." Thesis, View thesis, 1995. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/358.

Abstract:
In the past and present the inter-gender relationship has been based on male domination resulting in the overlooking of the female role and value. Many male-inspired theories helped to establish this hierarchical relationship and to perpetuate the belief that men and women have been created differently and not equally privileged. My research on the status of Korean women verifies these theories by examining how much social and cultural conditions have contributed to the difference between the genders to the disadvantage of women. It also reveals the distortion of patriarchal theories by investigating the principle of Confucianism which led to the depravation of Korean women's opportunities to develop themselves. The present level of achievement for women's equality is the result of these women's struggles. I as a women artist, present my work so that it will help both men and women to raise their awareness and to eliminate the prejudice towards females in society. The early principle of the Yin and Yang, distorted later for political benefits, implied a cooperative relationship of two forces for creation and development. Although these force are different and independent, when used cooperatively, they make a complete picture of stability and harmony. If they remain separate forces there is no resulting completion of creation, but instability and misfortunes. By disclosing this principle of harmony in Shamanism and early Confucianism, I also present the notion that all kinds of misfortunes come out of a broken harmony between creatures, peoples, and genders.

The thesis takes On Self-pursuit in the Novel of Hong Ying as the title and discusses the process of Hong Ying to lead the readers and herself to take self-pursuit via novel writing. With the unique and bold desire description, Hong Yong does not promote woman's rights simply, but breaks through the angle of delicate and profound female self-identity to disclose the included contradictions and struggles. It is not unpractical for the differences of both sexes, but proposes questions which worth enlightening. The structure of the thesis is as the following: Chapter I Preface: It describes the study motivation and purposes, and reviews the previous study results. Then, the thesis explains the scope and limitation of the research. Finally, it concludes research methods Chapter II Accomplishment of Hong Ying---Hong Ying and Her Novel Creation: It introduces the Hong Ying’s life and her creation stages, and narrates different meaning of poems and novels to Hong Ying. Additionally, it introduces the glories and comments that the novels bring to Hong Ying. A Hero in the Women Array is just the title to Hong Ying given by the external world, which is from the 3 major characteristics in her novel creation: analysis of her true self, desire description of inherent feminist and women history reshaping through; literary imagination. Chapter III Self-pursuit Trilogy---Self-Awareness: At the beginning, as they are on the edge, they do not sense the existence of “themselves”. With understanding of their own bodies, they sense the desire from the deep level. “Themselves” are wakened up gradually and they discover they are in depression and must face squarely to their desires to regain the rights of self-selection. Hence, they escape from the binding and establish themselves actively. Chapter IV Self-pursuit Trilogy---Self-exploration: After the awakening of female individuals, they feel the imprisonment from the gender groups firstly. Their dressing and pudicity, even the wombs for child nurturing do not belong to themselves. They attempt to rebel patriarchy through women alliance and penis castration. However, they lose themselves after seizing the power and discover what they need are just the family warmth and love embrace. Chapter V Self-pursuit Trilogy--- Self-redemption: Promoting the field of vision of self review to the angle of culture and history, what shall the Chinese, who are in a society to pursue western modernization, do to treat the conflict between self traditions and progress trend? While for the women, who cannot find the positions in the history, what shall they do to face their situations? Sex, religion and death are just the temporary habitats in the journey of self-pursuit. Self-pursuit will be an eternal and continuously departed spiritual concept. Chapter VI Conclusion: It summarizes the study results and discloses future research prospects.

Liou, Ying-Hong, a Taiwanese native stone-carving master, was born in 1943 in Sanshia Township of Taipei County. It was in 1947 when Sanshia Master Temple in Taipei County was undergoing restoration for the last time and many major Taiwanese stone-carving masters at the time were gathering on the scene that Liou, Ying-Hong had the chance to see and hear about stone-carving since young and started to be fascinated by the skill. In 1956 when Liou, Ying-Hong was 13 years old, he entered Sanshia Master Temple in Taipei County to learn stone-carving and thus opened up his future career. His craftsmanship was much influenced by many well-known stone-carving masters in Taiwan, mostly from two masters, Shih Tian-fu and Chian Zhi-chong from whom he inherited the skills. During his professional career, he also followed stone-carving masters such as Chang Mu-cheng and Chang Ching-yu, the grandchild of Mr. Chiang Hsing to participate in many stone-carving projects in temples across the island. Before 1968, Liou, Ying-Hong mainly followed masters Shih Tian-fu and Chang Mu-cheng to participate in stone-carving in temples in Tainan City and Tainan County, and Taipei City and Taipei County. There were also projects of small number of temples located in Changhwa County, Chiayi County and Pingtung County. Starting from 1968, Liou, Ying-Hong(23 years old at the time) engaged himself in temple’s stone-carving construction projects. His territory is mainly in northern Taiwan with a total of 33 temples including Sanshia Master Temple of Taipei County, Baofu Temple in Yonghe City of Taipei County, Hsingtien Temple of Taipei City, Wanli Wannian Temple of Tainan City, Dali Tiangong Temple of Yilan County, Dashi Furen Temple of Taipei County, Jiulong Mountain Yu Ching Temple of Yilan County, Fude Temple in Chonghe City of Taipei County, Zhi Shuan Temple in Bade City of Taoyuan County, and KaiChang ShenWang Temple in Neihu District of Taipei City. Yuan Ze Memorial Hall located in Taipei City is the only one non-temple stone-carving construction project that Liu Ying-hong took part in. In 1988, Liou, Ying-Hong was fully retired. His more than 30-year long stone-carving career allowed him to witness the entire history of the stone-carving industry in Taiwan from post Pacific War till the 1980s. This paper tries to establish the life history of master Liou, Ying-Hong through his personal history, the distribution and style of his artworks, and his manipulation of stones in various subject matters so as to understand his position as a stone-carving master in Taiwan and the historical background of Taiwan’s stone-carving industry after the Pacific War.
