Lai, Hoi-yan, and 黎藹欣. "Beauty myth in Hong Kong." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2000. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B21375525.

Full text
Abstract:
(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of thesis entitled Beauty Myth in Hong Kong submitted by Lai Hoi Van for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in February 2000 After the first and second waves of feminism, women in Western societies have the right to vote and work in public. However, in late capitalism, many scholars proclaim images of female beauty are used as a new political weapon against women's advancement. This weapon is the beauty myth. The general popularity of feminine culture of beauty and the abundance of related beauty consumption can be observed in Hong Kong. In order to find out how the beauty myth is operating in Hong Kong and whether women are the victims being hindered from social advancement because of the beauty myth, the case of Hong Kong is investigated. There are two parts of the research. The first part makes use of secondary and primary data on the positions of women in Hong Kong to construct the dominant standard of beauty. It is found that the positions of women in Hong Kong are not as advanced as women in Western developed countries in terms of work, education and family. In addition, the existence of a dominant standard of beauty can also be found in Hong Kong from analysis of beauty parlors, magazines and beauty guidebook contents. The second part of the research is an ethnography of 13 respondents who are supposed to be the victims of the beauty myth. It is discovered that they generally accept the dominant standard of beauty but negotiations and personal politics are detected in their daily encounters with the myth. They are not "cultural dopes" but express certain degrees of agency. They actively make choices under the circumstances not of their own making. In their beauty practices, they find the specific women's community and knowledge, in which pleasure is intertwined. Combining the macroscopic and the microscopic parts of research, women's pursuits of beauty should not be narrowed down to a totalitarian statement. For the advancement of women in Hong Kong, the present forms of beauty need not be abandoned. More perspectives and options in terms of beauty and other aspects of life such as work and education, have to be provided for women, as well as for men. The positions of women in education, work and family can only be advanced with the general political awareness of women and the struggle to change the structure. To advance the structure, the present ideologies of femininity and masculinity based on dualism have to be changed. Education, mass media and the present feminine communities of beauty can be viewed as the sites promoting a new political awareness.

Mok, Kar-kei Sampson, and 莫嘉祈. "Extreme sport park in Hong Kong." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2010. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B47152552.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past two decades, the popularity of Extreme Sport (X-Sport) has rapidly increased in Hong Kong. “Exploration of Excitement” would be the main reason why teenagers and young adults would like to play X-Sport. Unlike other sports, X-Sport does not require any rules, restrictions or physical requirements for its players, which provides more freedom and creativity. However, the general public does not agree with this particular interest group due to their misunderstanding with limited knowledge of the X-Sport. Also, there are only few existing X-Sport park and related facilities in Hong Kong and most of them are located at unwanted spaces with poor environmental and facilities qualities, which leads X-Sport player would play at local parks and unused space in their neighbourhood. Damages on landscape feature are normally appeared in these local parks recreational spaces. Due to the lack of societal supports and deficiencies in government, there are only six existing X-Sport park in Hong Kong, where they are all inaccessible and far apart. This thesis aims to promote X-Sport by using an X-Sport park as a median to integrate both young and old generations in physical and social aspects, not just exists as a functional space for X-Sport players. A roundabout site, Chai Wan Roundabout Garden, in major transport interchange in Hong Kong Island is selected for the development of this concept. Three stages design process has been incorporated. The first design stage has developed based on the primary site-observation and comprehensive site analysis. The second design stage is to conduct a special study of a landscape technique with both local and international case studies. The third design stage is to combine both first and second stages development and formulate the final design solution. Comments from first and second juries has been addressed and amended accordingly.

Cheung, Yuen-yee Eunice, and 張婉宜. "Conservation of geoheritage in Hong Kong." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/192991.

Full text
Abstract:
A gap exists between people and geological treasures which they have failed to recognised, in particular their scientific, educational, cultural, and aesthetic values. In general, comprehensive treatment on conservation of geoheritage is missing in the local context. Identification of geoheritages may be the first step to bridge the gap, but there is no workable definition to start with. Some overseas authorities may give guidance to identify the targets, so an inventory of significant geoheritages can be established to facilitate their protection and monitoring. The need for conservation of geoheritages is generally overlooked. There are specific authorities and legislation to protect cultural heritages and biodiversity, but not so for geoheritages, even for those within the Geopark, which may fall victim to rapid economic development, a more potential impact than the natural processes of weathering and erosion. A similar conservation vacuum is also observed with many stone monuments which share the same fate as geoheritages. On the other hand, a close relationship exists among the biological, cultural/historical and geological aspects of a site to justify inclusion of geoheritages in the current conservation regime. An integral management approach could be an effective strategy for conserving these aspects within the same location. Appreciating geoheritages in the field brings nice surprises to the curious, which underpins that geology can be made an interesting and lively study. The theoretical discussions have been applied to a case study on Po Toi. A fieldtrip worksheet was designed to serve as an example for students and other interested members of the public who are encouraged to retrace the steps of the author in an enjoyable learning experience.
