陳康言. "香港狐仙信仰研究= A study of fox cult in Hong Kong." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2017. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/479.

Full text
Abstract:
In Hong Kong, a society with the majority of Chinese, people do have a simple and single imagination towards the idea of "fox", which mostly involved vixen, mistress, excessive underarm odor and other negative meaning. The formation of these impressions has a close relation with the images of "fox" which we found in traditional Chinese literature and the rendering of the popular media. However, as a symbol of faith, fox still has its own unique cultural significance. "Fox belief" has a long history and also popular among the general population in China. The moral significance of "fox" is originated before the Pre-Qin Period. Since the Tang Dynasty, it has become a popular religion among the people in Northern China. Our ancestors believed that the old foxes had the ability to transform into supernatural creatures, which can become either a "God" or a "Monster". Although fox cult was originated at the Northern China, it can also be found in the Southern regions, including Hong Kong. Under the morden urban development, the ritual practices of fox cult in Hong Kong and other regions are very different from on another. Hong Kong, which belongs to the Sinosphere as well, contains thousands of Chinese folk deities, including fox belief. However, due to the traditional systematic Chinese religion system, research is limited in this area as fox belief was perceived to be a popular religion, subordinate to the systematic religion. Hence, there is a need for us to find out the real picture of fox cult in Hong Kong. In this research, field work is the most important method to acquire related knowledge since there are limited archives base on this area. The research will be divided into 7 parts, except the introduction and the conclusion, a historical background towards the formation and development of "Fox Cult" will be first discussed. Then, the common negative impression of Hong Kong people towards "fox spirit" will also be discussed. The main argument will be focusing on the faith connotation of fox cult in Hong Kong, including the legends and ritual practices. Moreover, the faith communities will also be a concern of this research. Lastly, in order to ascertain the uniqueness of fox belief in Hong Kong, fox cult in Taiwan and Shandong will also be introduced under a comparative method.

Wong, Yan Jenny. "The translatability of the religious dimension in Shakespeare from page to stage, from West to East : with reference to The Merchant of Venice in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6240/.

Full text
Abstract:
The research is a hermeneutic-cum-semiotic approach to the study of the translatability of religious language in a secular play, using The Merchant of Venice in China as a reference. Under the ”power turn” or “political turn” in translation studies, omissions and untranslatability of religious material are often seen as the product of censorship or self-censorship in the prevalent socio-political context. But the theology of each individual translating agent is often neglected as an important contributing factor to such untranslatability. This thesis offers a comprehensive approach in tracing the hermeneutical process of the translators/directors as a reader and the situational process and semiotics of theatre translation, which altogether gives rise to the image of translated literature which in turn influences audience reception. This interdisciplinary study thus traverses the disciplines of translation studies, hermeneutics, theatre studies, and sociology. In this thesis I argue that while translation theorists under the current “sociological turn” view social factors as the overarching factors in determining translation activities and strategies, I will show how the interaction between the translator’s or the dramatist’s theology and religious values interact with the socio-cultural milieu to carve out a unique drama production. Often, as one can see from my case studies, it is the religious values of the translating agents that become the overarching factor in determining the translation product, rather than social factors. This thesis further argues that the translatability of religious discourse should be understood in a broader sense according to the seven dimensions proposed by Ninian Smart, rather than merely focusing on untranslatability as a result of semantic and linguistic differences.

Lai, Hoi-yan, and 黎藹欣. "Beauty myth in Hong Kong." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2000. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B21375525.

Full text
Abstract:
(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of thesis entitled Beauty Myth in Hong Kong submitted by Lai Hoi Van for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in February 2000 After the first and second waves of feminism, women in Western societies have the right to vote and work in public. However, in late capitalism, many scholars proclaim images of female beauty are used as a new political weapon against women's advancement. This weapon is the beauty myth. The general popularity of feminine culture of beauty and the abundance of related beauty consumption can be observed in Hong Kong. In order to find out how the beauty myth is operating in Hong Kong and whether women are the victims being hindered from social advancement because of the beauty myth, the case of Hong Kong is investigated. There are two parts of the research. The first part makes use of secondary and primary data on the positions of women in Hong Kong to construct the dominant standard of beauty. It is found that the positions of women in Hong Kong are not as advanced as women in Western developed countries in terms of work, education and family. In addition, the existence of a dominant standard of beauty can also be found in Hong Kong from analysis of beauty parlors, magazines and beauty guidebook contents. The second part of the research is an ethnography of 13 respondents who are supposed to be the victims of the beauty myth. It is discovered that they generally accept the dominant standard of beauty but negotiations and personal politics are detected in their daily encounters with the myth. They are not "cultural dopes" but express certain degrees of agency. They actively make choices under the circumstances not of their own making. In their beauty practices, they find the specific women's community and knowledge, in which pleasure is intertwined. Combining the macroscopic and the microscopic parts of research, women's pursuits of beauty should not be narrowed down to a totalitarian statement. For the advancement of women in Hong Kong, the present forms of beauty need not be abandoned. More perspectives and options in terms of beauty and other aspects of life such as work and education, have to be provided for women, as well as for men. The positions of women in education, work and family can only be advanced with the general political awareness of women and the struggle to change the structure. To advance the structure, the present ideologies of femininity and masculinity based on dualism have to be changed. Education, mass media and the present feminine communities of beauty can be viewed as the sites promoting a new political awareness.
