Abstract:
The city of Lima presents a strong rejection of the rights of homosexual couples, in which movements have been created to seek approval at the legislative level, but there are still oppositions. From the above, it is intended to analyze three social representations of the homosexual couple bond in homosexual persons. It is a hermeneutical investigation with a thematic analysis. The participants are 3, whose ages are between 26 and 29 years, were selected according to the way in which they faced their homosexuality. Individual interviews were chosen to analyze the social representation of the homosexual couple's relationship. The results reveal that the representation of the homosexual couple that the participants have is based on the traditional model (man and woman), because of the stigmatization and prejudices that society presents, which provides them with difficulties towards the attempt to establish a stable and healthy couple bond. The results are discussed considering empirical research. This study could start new research.

Abstract:
In contemporary China, “homosexuals,” a true minority group, emerge gradually into the public view. In the context of the construction of a harmonious society in China, whether “homosexuals” obtain enough space to develop their culture or not becomes a question that we cannot overlook. The themes of this dissertation are the survival tactics of male “homosexuals” both within and outside of the internet environment. It discusses the construction of “homosexual” identity in different spaces and examines marriages between “homosexuals” and “heterosexuals.”The author holds that the special cultural context and social structure in China limits the expansion of the “homosexuals’” living space. Internet, a new medium, offers them a comparatively free space and fills their requirement of accessing individual and collective identities. Nonetheless, at the same time, internet keeps the “homosexuals” from fighting for their rights in real society. Survival tactics, which are carried out in the different spaces, make the collective consciousness of “homosexual” identity instable and vulnerable, and reduces the possibility of starting a western-style “gay movement” in China

Abstract:

Walters, Benjamin James. "More than Words: An Examination of Intimate Expression in Men’s Homosocial Friendships." Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/367716.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite a history of high quality research in the area, division exists within literature examining gender and communication regarding the degree to which men experience platonic intimacy in their homosocial friendships. Dominant theoretical approaches range from those suggesting that communication behaviours typical of men’s friendships are unemotive and, therefore, lacking in intimacy (e.g., Gupta et al., 2013; Levy, 2005; Reisman, 1990); to those suggesting that men’s friendships feature overt emotional intimacy, such as vulnerable disclosure (e.g., Batalha, Reynolds, & Newbigin, 2011; Hyde, 2005; Walker, 1994). The present research aimed to examine the various modes of expressing intimacy men employed within a friendship context (Study 1), the degree to which this expression met men’s needs for intimacy (Studies 1 and 3), and the impact of contextual factors and individual subscription to masculine role norms on men’s use of various modes of expression (Study 2). A mixed methods design was employed to assess intimacy in accordance with men’s subjective definitions. Importantly, studies were designed with the limiting implicit assumptions of some previous research in mind (such as the assumption that covert expression is inherently less intimate than vulnerable expression; and that masculinity is inherently incongruent with vulnerable expression). In doing this, the present research attempted to gain new perspective on hitherto unresolved issues in this area of research.

Abstract:
In the last few years, the world has seen a relative increase in female leadership in different areas such as political space and the corporate world. This rise has a significant impact on how these female leaders reproduce future leaders of their organizations. This study explores the concept of homosexual reproduction in female leadership roles through their interaction with fellow females in corporate settings. Furthermore, the study was used to determine the factors that prevent homosexual reproduction among female leaders. The study's strategy used a qualitative methodology supported by an inductive approach, empirically with semi-structured interviews to collect data from six experienced female leaders in Sweden and Zambia. Empirical data were analyzed using qualitative analysis of content. The interviews indicate that homosexual reproduction was not present in the female leadership, as most female leaders valued the skills, competency, and qualification. The result also suggests three factors that prevented homosexual reproduction in female leadership roles: competency and qualifications, job profiles, and home and family responsibilities. Female leaders were efficient in their roles because they focused on attaining organizational objectives when thinking about future leaders. The empirical data revealed differences in the barriers that prevented homosexual reproduction in Sweden and Zambia. In Zambia, all the barriers were manifest in the female leaders, while in Sweden, it was only the competency and qualifications aspect.

Baxendale, Graham. "The discursive production of homosexual regulation." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2013. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/354370/.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the pivotal place of the 1885 Labouchère Amendment and the 1967 Sexual Offences Act in the discourse of homosexual regulation presented by 20th century homophile histories. These twin events of ‘criminalisation’ and ‘decriminalisation’ are revisited to explore how and why they occurred and how they came to assume such a central position in both academic and popular understanding. The thesis draws on two streams of evidence. The literature on homosexual regulation is examined to establish the claims that are made about Labouchère Amendment and the Sexual Offences Act and the place that they are accorded, and the relationship that is established between them, within widely accepted homophile histories of the UK. Alongside this, primary sources – in the form of parliamentary debates, government papers, newspaper archives, and biographies – are interrogated to unpick the motivations and intentions of those involved in these pieces of legislation and to position them within a wider historical context. The thesis argues that this literature on homosexual regulation contributed to and institutionalised a homophile discourse geared especially towards establishing a history of what specific events might mean for political imperatives of the time and future prospects of homosexual communities. I will suggest that this led to uncritical acceptance of particular interpretations of the Labouchère Amendment and the Sexual Offences Act, which were reproduced over time and thus established as ‘truths’ within academia, the gay community and the wider public. Whilst some authors have recently subsequently questioned the importance of the Labouchère Amendment in the process of criminalisation (e.g. Cocks, 2003:17) these accounts have by-passed this event altogether, rather than offering an alternative account for its passage. Consequently, they have not supplanted earlier public, academic and political understandings of Labouchère. Specifically they have not explored how earlier understandings informed the debate about decriminalisation which, as this thesis will show, was premised on these historical interpretations. More broadly, the thesis argues that the over-concentration and mistaken interpretation of the Labouchère Amendment, which has misinformed understandings of the SOA (1967), has prevented the development of a more thorough, genealogical analysis of simultaneous sexual regulation more generally. In turn, developing a combined analysis of heterosexual as well as homosexual regulation contributes to the critique of existing interpretations which uncritically present certain events as homophobic rather than part of a more encompassing punitive heteronormativity. Part One critiques homosexual regulation’s historiography, before exploring theoretical and methodological issues raised in my thesis. Part Two then questions the Labouchère Amendment’s status as a fundamental adjustment in homosexual regulation making private homosexual acts short of sodomy illegal for the first time (Weeks, 1977). I provide an alternative history showing all homosexual acts were previously punishable and show that Labouchère’s Amendment was not homophobic but a measure for the protection of male youths from sexual exploitation and as such part in keeping with the wider punitive heteronormativity. I achieve this through analysing the primary sources on Labouchère’s Amendment from that period alongside the genealogical contextualization provided by contemporaneous heterosexual regulation. This establishes the foundations for Part 3 to repeat this methodology in analysing the decriminalisation process, this questions the centrality ascribed to the 1957 Wolfenden Report. I establish that this concentration ignores that decriminalisation was a highly politicised and negotiated process reliant upon the same social and political transformations that also re-ordered heterosexual regulation. This radically changes the interpretation of the how and why decriminalisation occurred and what had been possible.

Abstract:
Homosexual's health has shown to be worst then the rest of the Swedish population. Discrimination is a part of that result. There has also been studies that show some nurses in Sweden would choose to refrain from nursing homosexual patients. The aim of this study is to describe homosexual's experiences of treatment in Swedish health care. The method used a quantitative questionnaire that has been distributed mostly through social media. An open question has been analysed with manifest content analysis and validates and exemplified the quantitative result according to mixed method and triangulation. The result shows that 50 % of the informants felt that they at some point during the latest ten years, been treated in a negative way in the Swedish health system, because they were homosexuals. We have found that women experience negative treatment more often than men. Twenty-seven percent of the informants would refrain from telling the healthcare personal that they were homosexual, because they were afraid to get another treatment or were afraid of the healthcare personals reaction. Forty-two percent would say they experienced discrimination in contact with the Swedish healthcare. The discussion shows that the homosexual informants in this study are at the same risk of discrimination as they are in rest of the society. One implication of this study is to educate nursing personal in question regarding homosexuality, to improve the quality of care and public health for the homosexual patients.

Abstract:
Background: Homosexual individuals are, according to National Institute of Public Health, in a greater need of care than heterosexuals. The historical overview of homosexuals show several difficulties they’re subjected to within healthcare, however a positive development is shown. Healthcare professionals have different encounters that are influenced by individual factors. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe how homosexual individuals experience encounters given by health care professionals, and to describe the included articles study sample. Method: The present study was a descriptive literature riview based on 12 scientific articles with a qualitative approach. The material was gathered through searches of the MEDLINE database. Main Results: The result showed a repetitive pattern that homosexual individuals experienced a poor encounter from healthcare professionals, which was considered to be affected by lack of compassion, heteronormative assumptions, and not to be seen for who they are. In contrast, good treatment was experienced when good communication, acceptance and kind words and deeds were present. All of the studies reported the number of participants and the majority of the articles presented inclusion criterias and age. Half of the studies were conducted in the Nordic countries and 95.4% of the participants were women. Conclusions: With the descriptions made by homosexual individuals, the experiences was revealed regarding the encounters from healthcare professionals. These experiences showed unsatisfactory and unprofessional encounters, further influenced by heteronormative assumptions. These experiences also showed openness and generosity which had been received. Through knowledge of the encounters that homosexual individuals experiences, nurses can in their professional work towards the improvement of homosexual peoples’s health and wellbeing.

Abstract:

In this study we want to illustrate how youth thinks and feels about homosexuality. Studying just this has been shown to be very important, to show youth and society how prejudice and bad attitudes against the subject can produce psychological problems among youth with deviating sexualities. Homosexuality is a very large area of study. We have chosen to focus our study on the knowledge-background, dissertations, scientific articles, reports, and different organisation’s information to try and completely cover the subject we have chosen. We made a qualitative questionnaire, which we then handed out to tree different classes in the upper secondary school for answering. Through our results, which we concluded based on the psychosocial theories and scientific studies earlier made in this area, we could see that females in general had a more positive approach to homosexuality than males. It also showed that males/females who could relate to, or knew a homosexual individual had a bigger understanding and where more tolerating to it.

Abstract:

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how seven homosexual men in the age between 18 and 26 years experience openness with their sexuality in Stockholm. We wish to investigate how these men experience and handle their everyday life in a community characterized by a heteronormative foundation. We will focus on how they handle their openness in an urban environment and if they experience any limitations dependent on the situation or surroundings they live in, and also how they handle these situations. The study is hermeneutically inspired where seven life story interviews are analyzed within the theoretical frameworks provided by Connell, Goffman, Foucault and Queer theory.

The results show that the respondents’ openness varies depending on a variety of factors where surroundings, situations and previous experiences are influential. In those cases where the openness was limited there appeared to be several different strategies to use. Furthermore feelings of many times being excluded and belonging to a different part of society were clear. These feelings have proven to be constantly present in the minds of the respondents. It is also clear that there is strength and solidarity to be found within their own group.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article is by dint of using stigma theory try to get an insight into and understanding of how gay men feel about their place in the social environment. The intention of this paper is to try to get an insight into and an understanding of how gay men experience prejudice, opportunities to be open and opportunities to resist the power that heteronormativity means. The study is qualitative with a hermaneutic scientific approach, and I have conducted six in-depth interviews with gay men to find out how the perception of their own places in life is influenced by the interaction with the social environment. The result shows that the homosexuality that the stigma comes from and the public social structure limits the gay man's life chances, and how well the gay man succeeds in integrating into society depends on the social context, but also on what relationship the gay man himself has to homosexuality. None of the respondents, however, experienced a widespread alienation. Furthermore, the results show that there are several different strategies to deal with openness and that these vary depending on the situation, and that men's relationships to friends and family to a great extent is not adversely affected by the stigma.

Abstract:
Introduction: Visibility within advertising can generate acceptance and normalization in society, hence it is a powerful media that is of utmost importance for the homosexual group. Portrayals in advertising equal an admission as citizens, which homosexual women are currently neglected as media circumscribe male homosexuality as norm. Knowledge of how homosexual women identifies with portrayals in advertising is currently sparse. Aim: The overall aim of this study is to satiate the gap of knowledge of portrayals of homosexual women in advertising and how the dual identity of gender and sexuality influence the interpretation of advertisements targeting homosexual women. Method: A combination of quantitative and qualitative methodology. The sample includes self-identified homosexual women recruited consecutively during a two-month period. In total 113 homosexual women participated in the study. To provide a realistic interpretation, actual print advertisements portraying female homosexuals were used as stimuli within the contexts of mainstream media and gay media. Results: The female homosexual group appears to be heterogeneous since the perception of the individual sexual identity and lifestyle was not aligned but rather dispersed. However, the participants’ perception of the sexual identity and lifestyle of the female homosexual group is that is a homogenous group. Conclusion: Within the female homosexual group a stigmatization exist regarding gender behaviour that does not correspond with the recurrent portrayal in advertising of homosexual women as a homogenous group.

Hansen, Kyle C. "The Philosophy of Sex and the Morality of Homosexual Conduct." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/652.

Full text
Abstract:
Homosexuality is an important and controversial topic in political, philosophical, ethical and religious spheres. We are exposed to the debate of homosexuality in the media on a regular basis and issues related to homosexuality have been taken up by the Supreme Court, politicians and religious institutions. Needless to say, the debate surrounding homosexuality has captured the attention of almost everyone in society to some degree. It is my goal in this thesis to give a candid overview and analysis of the arguments surrounding homosexual sexual conduct. First, I will present an argument by John Corvino, who posits that homosexual conduct can realize the same concrete goods of love, happiness, and pleasure, among others, that heterosexual conduct can realize. Namely, if homosexual conduct can produce these goods, then there is no reason on the face of things to treat homosexual conduct as morally inferior to heterosexual conduct. I will then consider an objection by Michael Levin who asserts that even if this is true, there is a prudential reason to discourage homosexual conduct because it leads to unhappiness. This fact counts prudentially against homosexual conduct and undermines Corvino’s argument. I will then examine an argument by Alan Goldman, who presents a definition of sex which he believes best matches our common intuitions and judgments in regards to what sexual activity is and isn’t. Goldman argues against definitions of sexual activity which posit that the purpose of sexual activity is to fulfill some external goal or purpose to sex itself, such as reproduction or love. Rather, Goldman outlines that sex is essentially a physical desire for contact with another’s body. If Goldman’s definition is correct, then his definition entails that homosexual conduct is not immoral. Afterwards, I will give my own thoughts as to what moral conclusions we should draw about homosexual conduct based on the above arguments.

Abstract:
This pilot study was designed to collect and analyze a broad range of descriptive data on out-patient pedophiles. Eighteen males with at least one legally charged pedophilic offense (excluding incest) participated in the research. Seven of the subjects sexually molested a male child (homosexual pedophiles) and eleven subjects sexually molested a female child (heterosexual pedophiles).
Subjects were administered the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) and the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI). Subjects and their therapists also participated in a structured interview which sought data on psycho-social and offense variables.
Analysis of the MCMI results found that when profile configurations were compared, the homosexual group showed higher mean sub-scale elevations, a more cohesive pattern of sub-scale elevations, and significantly higher sub-scale scores for Passive-Aggressive personality as a feature. The heterosexual group shared Avoidant/Dependent features of personality with the homosexual group but individual profile configurations were much less homogeneous in sub-scale elevations. The analysis of the NPI results found no significant difference between the groups. A comparison of the structured interview data for the groups strongly suggests that homosexual offenders are more structured in their pedophilic interest than heterosexual offenders.
The results are discussed in relation to the validity of the fixated/regressed model for homosexual and heterosexual pedophiles, respectively. The relationship between personality, aetiology of pedophilic behavior, and offense pattern is considered. Implications and suggestions for future research are outlined.

Em seguida se estabelece uma analise crítica do termo coming-out of the closet (o sair do armário).
This dissertation s purpose is to analyze the path that the homosexual body had to pass through since Modern Times until the last decades, when it started to be represented in a normalized way. It starts with a brief historiography of the homosexuality: since its creation and naturalization by medical-legal institutions in 1869, on disciplinary societies, up to Hollywood s heteronormative imaging monopoly in control societies, and finally the appropriation of the term by the American homosexual identity movement in the 70 s. Next, the dissertation s aim is to establish a critical analysis of the term coming out of the closet - when it reaches its main goal: an investigation of the possible reasons why the homosexual culture tends to reject the figures of the effeminate gay (sissy boys), the manned lesbian (butches and dykes) and all the other non-heteronormative subjects. Finally, the reflection focuses on the movies Elvis & Madona (2011) and on the documentary Dzi Croquettes - aiming to perceive how Brazilian contemporary movies are portraying subjects out of the representation based on the sexual difference, what could mean a possible subversion of this normalization of the body.

Abstract:
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between gender role attitudes and marital satisfaction. Heterosexual and homosexual couples were investigated. To measure gender role attitudes the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) was employed. Marital satisfaction was measured by the Inventory of Marital Satisfaction (IMS). Twenty three couples participated in the study. Both partners in each couple completed the BSRI and the IMS. Findings indicate that androgynous individuals report lower degree of marital problems than sex-typed individuals. The results also indicate that couples in which both partners are classified as androgynous report the least amount of marital difficulties. Couples comprised of a masculine and an androgynous partner report the highest degree of marital problems. Finally, couples who are made up of masculine and feminine partners report a degree of problems that falls between the other two groups.

Fattah, Nadia Abdel. "James Baldwin's Search for a Homosexual Identity in his Novels." PDXScholar, 1996. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/5231.

Abstract:
James Arthur Baldwin (1924- 1987) is one of the two major writers who have dared write about black gay men and from a black gay perspective. However, his fame as a racial spokesman and his insightful analyses of race relations in America tend to distract attention from the fact that he has been one of the most important homosexual writers of the twentieth century. Intolerance and homophobia among black and white Americans often led to a misinterpretation or misevaluation of James Baldwin's novels. James Baldwin was very courageous to come out as a black homosexual writer during the period of the Cold War and the Civil Rights movement. However, his awareness of racism and homophobia in the American society, and his difficult position of being a public figure and a spokesman for the Afro-Americans left its traces in his novels and influenced his novel writing career. The purpose of the present study is to show that out of intolerance, ignorance, and homophobia the evaluators of James Baldwin's novels often did him no justice. Baldwin through his novel writing developed a homosexual consciousness for himself. This struggle of coming-out was his personal struggle and it was marked by his burden of the doubly oppressed. I argue that Baldwin's search for an identity as a black homosexual writer is reflected in his writing. He constructed his identity through his writing. This study attempts to show that Baldwin's development of a homosexual identity took place in stages during his novel writing career. An analysis of the novels Go Tell It On the Mountain (1953), Giovanni's Room (1956), Another Country (1962), and Just Above My Head ( 1979) will demonstrate his movement from dealing with homosexuality as an underlying theme to using it as a tool to protest against any kinds of labels in the American society. Baldwin believed that discrimination cannot cease as long as the categorization of people through artificial constructs such as the "Negro" or the "homosexual" exists.

Abstract:
This study examines differences in quality of life measures between heterosexual and homosexual respondents using General Social Survey data from 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2002. Analyses of quality of life are performed in an effort to compare the heterosexual and homosexual population of the United States. The three main areas which are explored in the analysis are physical health, general happiness, and life excitement. Few differences were found in subjective life satisfaction between heterosexuals and homosexuals; however, some control variables differed. Directions for future research regarding homosexuality and quality of life are discussed.

Brayne, Alan. "The changing depiction of homosexual people in twentieth-century British drama." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1988. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4005/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies how the image of homosexual people has evolved on the British stage during the present century. It aims to discern general trends rather than compile an exhaustive list of plays containing homosexual characters. Similarly, it is not intended to be a compendium of homosexual playwrights, but will focus on the contents of the drama rather than the biographical details of authors' lives. It makes no attempt to analyse work that is not ostensibly homosexual which could be argued to contain latent homosexual content. Nor, finally, does it discuss phenomena of interest in this field which are tangential to the area of study - for example, cross-dressing in pantomime and music hall. At the risk of superficiality, it concentrates on plays that have tried to discuss homosexuality and depict gay characters in an open, straight-forward manner. The approach taken to the subject has been historical and sociological, linking developments in gay drama to the social and political situation facing homosexual people throughout the present century. As such, this thesis argues for the existence of seven stages in homosexual drama during this time. While plays cannot always be fitted into a rigid chronological schema - some overlap clearly occurs - the history of homosexual drama can be briefly summarised as follows: - 1) Silence. 2) The first plays depict homosexual characters, but these are generally censored heavily or closed down. 3) Plays begin to raise the subject more boldly, but only by portraying characters who are wrongly accused of homosexuality or about whose sexuality there is left some doubt. 4) Homosexual characters are depicted openly as such, but they conform to degrading stereotypes. 5) Gay people break away to create their own separatist drama, generally intending to proselytise in favour of gay rights. 6) Mainstream plays on the West End and television begin to feature gay people in an unsensationalised way. 7) AIDS arrives and dominates homosexual drama. Although this study concentrates on British drama, theatre is now an international phenomenon, and this has been especially true of gay drama. Therefore, it has often been necessary to refer to the drama of other countries, in particular America.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study explores the performative construction and appropriations of heteronormative masculinities by heterosexual and homosexual men respectively. My interest in masculinity as a culturally constructed fantasy is extended to imply a desire for the masculine. The idea of masculine desire is further developed by indicating a possible (homo)sexual desire for the heteronormative representation of masculinity. In highlighting the artificial and material qualities of the assumed stable phallus, the impassable structure of hegemonic masculinities, such as manifested in the cowboy and bodybuilder, is turned into the penetrable penis as object of the male gaze. I will concentrate on the fetishization of heterosexual masculine signifiers in physique photography in order to demonstrate this shift in the male gaze. Masculinity as a (de)attachable component allows the de-subjectification and thus, depowering of heteronormative masculinity by the possible appropriation thereof by gay men.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between individualism and attitudes toward four types of sexual behavior, specifically adolescent sex, premarital sex, extramarital sex, and homosexual sexual behavior. A secondary purpose was to add to the conceptual and methodological discussions of individualism. In the United States these behaviors are becoming more common and attitudes generally more accepting. What remains unclear and under theorized is why? I address this question from the frame of the intersection of sexuality studies with the study of deviance as these behaviors have been considered to fit normative, absolutists, statistical and/or reactive definitions of deviance. This research was informed by Hawdon's recent general model of deviant behavior. In brief, one of Hawdon's contributions to the study of deviance is his addition of the cultural value of individualism as an explanatory variable related to cross-cultural rates of drug use. The primary research question that guided this research was: Is individualism related to attitudes toward adolescent sex, premarital sex, extramarital sex, and homosexual sexual behavior? Utilizing data from the General Social Survey, this question was examined using a variety of conceptualizations of individualism to test the relationship between individualism and attitudes toward the various sexual behaviors for five time periods--1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006. Three major hypotheses were posed regarding the relationship between individualism and attitudes toward perceived sexual deviance. The analysis did not support the hypotheses. Reasons for this lack of support for the theoretical perspective were discussed.

Abstract:

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is primarily a sexually transmitted disease. The majority of those infected in the First World are homosexual and bisexual men, and intravenous drug users. The study combined a literature review and a case example to explore psychosocial needs of homosexual AIDS patients with a view to presenting recommendations for mental health practitioners to help alleviate the psychosocial trauma of these patients and their significant others. The literature review focussed on the psychosocial experiences of homosexual AIDS patients; their losses, reactions of their significant others; their emotional reactions to medical treatment, and, psychosocial treatment issues and approaches. The case example was a twenty-nine- year old hospitalized homosexual male. Information was received from the patient's befriender, his lover and from the patient himself. The reactions and experiences of this patient were concomitant with many of those discussed in the literature review, namely: The patient suffered major losses: employment, income, house and household possessions as well as social status, with the primary psychosocial effect of loss of independence and control. The patient also experienced some isolation and rejection from some friends, family and hospital staff, and geographical isolation for a period of time from his lover and family. He displayed anger and denial - aspects of his personality which were evident prior to his diagnosis but exacerbated by his illness.

Gramlich, Theresa. "Children Raised by Homosexual Parents: Sexual Orientation, Mental & Sexual Health." TopSCHOLAR®, 1989. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2406.

Full text
Abstract:
Sex and morals have often been factors in custody disputes. Courts have felt that giving custody of children to homosexual parents would create an environment not in the best interest of the child. Many mental health professionals argue that these decisions have been based on prejudice and homophobia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate research on the sexual orientation of children raised by homosexual parents and review data on the mental/psychosexual health of these children. These studies revealed no difference between children raised by gay/lesbian parents versus those raised by heterosexual parents on IQ scores, gender identity, or peer group relations. Daughters raised by lesbian mothers tended to choose more masculine toys and engage in more masculine activities than daughters raised by single heterosexual mothers. Nearly all of the adolescent children of homosexual parents experienced periods of questioning their sexual orientation. They also expressed the possibility of changing their sexual orientation later in life. Problems in research methodology (i.e., pre-experimental designs and lack of external validity) however, severely limit the validity and generalizability of these conclusions. Given the absence of externally valid, rigorous research on the relationship between homosexual parents and the sexual orientation of their children, these authors conclude that this question remains unanswered. These authors argue that custodial decisions regarding children of homosexual parents be based on sound information in the best interest of both children and parents and not rooted in homophobia.
