Abstract:
Europe’s political landscapes are in turmoil; new radical parties challenge the established political order. This book locates Europe’s contemporary challenges within the longer economic and political trajectories of its “welfare democracies.” It argues forcefully that it is imperative to understand the specific structures of political competition and voter–party links to make sense of the political and economic turmoil of the last decades. In four distinct European welfare democracies (Nordic, continental, southern, and Anglo-Saxon), the political economy, the party system, and the structure of the political space are co-determined in a specific way. Accordingly, specific combinations of policies and politics and distinct patterns of alignment between core electoral groups and political parties exist in the four welfare democracies and shape their reactions to current challenges. With this, the book provides an analytical framework that links welfare states to party systems, combining recent contributions to the comparative political economy of the welfare state and insights from party and electoral politics. The book identifies three phenomena: in electoral politics it states a certain homogenization of European party systems, the emergence of a new combination of leftist socio-economic and rightist socio-cultural positions in many parties, and finally the rise of the radical right in the north of Europe and the radical left in the south. The contributions to this book also indicate a confluence toward renewed welfare state support among parties and voters. Finally, the Europeanization of political dynamics, combined with incompatible growth models, has created pronounced European cleavages.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the challenging idea of an African perspective on global governance. The extraordinary diversity of continental Africa in terms of religious beliefs, political institutions, social structures, and economic outlooks makes it a daunting task to discern a distinct African perspective. To avoid overgeneralization, homogenization, and essentialization of the different views that may exist, the chapter focuses on the African Union (AU) to represent a collective African position on global governance, arguing that global governance is thus viewed in relational terms. In this context, the steering capacity (i.e. governance) is the responsibility of the entire community and not the responsibility of a select few. This collectivist-driven conception of global governance is reflected in the way African states seek to exercise their agency on global issues and in the global system. The relational idea adds another dimension to the rationalistic ideas embedded in conventional narratives of global governance.

Ellis, Steven J. R. The Third Retail Revolution. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198769934.003.0006.

Abstract:
This chapter considers the causes behind the reshaping of Roman retail landscapes during the third and last of the retail revolutions; while the process began in the Flavian era, its full expression was more often realized during the urban building boom of the early second century BCE. A homogenization of form now characterized the Roman taberna, as evidenced through the more simplified structural layouts of what are now rows and rows of one- and two-room shops. We also see it in the regularization of shop-fronts as identified through their standardized, mass-produced threshold stones. This chapter questions how the increasingly standardized shop-fronts can be found in so many cities across the Roman world, yet not everywhere. It also considers the dichotomous nature of the evidence for tabernae from this period, which represents both economic prosperity (in their architectural construction) and decline (in their artifact assemblages).
