Abstract:
This paper evaluates how disruption impacts community-building and the learning process within the context of black girlhood. While delving into the complexities of black girls utilizing digital literacies in order to cultivate a community system that affirms their place of being in the world, I seek to understand how black girls can adapt to their surroundings when attempting to maintain their existence while they are faced with constant opposing forces. Through traditional means of ethnographic research such as conducting interviews, taking note of observations, keeping documentation as well as utilizing teacher-research methodologies and receiving direct data from the participants themselves, this paper highlights how one group of Black girls communicate their thoughts and ideas about their experiences in order to facilitate change.

Abstract:
Research has shown that pastoralism and the management of the commons are connected (Bollig and Lesogorol 2016). In this article I discuss how the concept of variability, which emerged from discussions of dryland ecologies in the 1980s (Homewood 2008), can inform and enhance research on the commons and vice versa. Research on the commons can further elucidate the understanding of pastoralist practices. I conclude with reflections drawn from some empirical examples in the literature, the use of the socio-ecological systems (SES) framework, and discuss the benefits and potential problems when applied to heterogeneous and flexible pastoralist practices and to the pastoral management of the commons.

Howard, Sarah Collins. "'The temple of costly experience' : Patrick Gwynne (1913-2003) : architect of The Homewood." Thesis, University of Bath, 2016. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.698959.

Full text
Abstract:
The architect Patrick Alban Gwynne (1913-2003) designed The Homewood for his parents in 1938 at the age of 24. An immensely private man, Gwynne ran his life, his home and his architectural practice in a meticulous manner quite separate from the mainstream modernist architects of his day. In Modern Houses in Britain, Jeremy Gould considers The Homewood to be one of the finest modern houses in terms of composition and detailing. It is an accomplished translation of Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye with an elegantly English flavour. Gwynne acknowledged the stylistic influences of his former employer Wells Coates, but whereas an idealistic functionalism was a component of Coates’s architecture, Gwynne took an elegant approach to his work, which was domestic and client led. He created a sensual, more decorative modernism that lay somewhere between the idealism of the Modern Movement and a still extant English tradition. Architectural history emphasises wider reassessments of Modernism during the Interwar period and the thesis is an opportunity to reflect on the development of an architect and his architectural ideas for a series of unique houses for his clients. The seamless integration of The Homewood with the Modern Movement and the country house idiom is crucial to the research and Gwynne merged the two, ensuring that every detail was specific to his tastes. The house was a testing ground for new materials and architectural processes and has been described as Gwynne’s “design laboratory’. The Homewood’s acquisition by the National Trust has ensured that Gwynne’s home and his collection are secure for the future and will continue to be a testament to his abiding interest in high-quality craftsmanship, his attention to detail and a lifetime of changing tastes of one individual. The thesis will enhance Gwynne’s recognition in British architectural history and the house will be used as a point of reference to chart the progression of his elegant style and understand his work in greater depth.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to investigate the relationship between homework methodology and compliance. The "Clinical Perception of Homework Style and Compliance Survey" was developed to measure compliance, methodology, and relating variables. A convenience sample consisted of 121 participants in this study. Participating therapists were asked to rate the likelihood of using various examples of homework methodologies and estimate the compliance they have received over the past 3 months. The results show that items used on the survey factored into two groups, which can be called direct and collaborative. Neither of the groups (i.e., direct and collaborative) was significantly correlated with homework compliance. Further conceptualization of the collaborative methodology was proposed. Implications for future research were highlighted.

Abstract:
Experimenters evaluated the effects of a homework session on undergraduate students' homework performance through an adapted alternating treatments design in two introduction to behavior analysis courses. Several participants attended homework sessions; however, homework submission and homework mastery did not vary as a function of homework session attendance or availability. Homework submission remained high throughout the experiment regardless of attendance at or availability of a homework session. Many participants responded that they were not interested in or did not need homework sessions. Participants who attended homework sessions rated them as neutral or helpful overall, with longer time and different time as the most common suggestions for improvement.

Abstract:
Homework is and has been an integral part of school for many years. However, in the last few years, some professionals have begun to question whether or not homework should be a part of school or not. Opinions vary greatly on this position. Some have even gone on to claim that it is unwarranted and even detrimental to students’ education. Others mean that it is an absolute necessity. This dissertation is an investigation of the viewpoints on the rationale for homework of 6 teachers of English at junior high level. In order to gain insight to their views, qualitative interviews were utilized. The results show that each of the consulted educators of English utilizes homework as a learning tool in their teaching. The purpose of assigning homework is that it fills the function of giving the students the opportunity to review, to take responsibility in keeping a schedule, planning and for their education, and to train in studying. I have come to the conclusion that if students are to be assigned homework, it is imperative that the homework is interesting for them and that the pupils see it as something that will promote their development in the subject.

Pyle, April Delilah. "ADHD focused homework intervention." Scholarly Commons, 2009. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/2793.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a homework intervention program designed to include children with ADHD. Children participated in a 5-week homework skills class, with their parents attending a one time homework training session. In conjunction with this class, parents were attending a 10-week behavioral parenting program. Participants included 11 children (4 diagnosed with ADHD) from 1st through 6th grade who were randomly assigned to start the homework skills class during the first or second 5 weeks of the program. Homework skills taught in the class included organization, learning styles, homework routines, time-management, goal-setting, self-management, and increasing motivation. Parent reports on the Homework Problem Checklist showed no significant treatment effects; however, trends showed a decrease in homework problems at post-treatment and follow-up, specifically for children with more severe homework problems. This is a potentially effective homework intervention for children who have severe homework problems with or without an ADHD diagnosis. Implications, limitations, and future research are discussed.

This collection contains a preface that discusses the role of landscape and place as they are used in fiction, particularly when they are colored by the writer's own memories of home. The preface is followed by four original short stories, three of which relate to a fictional small town in Texas. "Under the Surface" involves two young boys who begin to relate thoughts of the dead body they find to their own absentee mother. "Tommy" explores a young man's memories of his recently deceased friend, as well as the gossip of a small town. "Stubborn" depicts a man's struggle after his wife has delivered an ultimatum. "Out of the Valley" is about a father and daughter questioning what it means to be normal.

Abstract:
The debate about homework effectiveness as a learning tool has continued for more than a century. There are many papers about homework effect on the learning process of schoolchildren. The aim of this article is to analyse the role of homework in the process of mathematics teaching at universities on the basis of the authors’ experience working with students from three faculties of the Riga Technical University. The report includes a description of the system of homework assignments and their weight in the evaluation of students in mathematics courses. Some types of homework are mandatory for first-year students in all mathematics courses regardless of level, number of hours, or topics included in the course. The authors of the paper review the advantages and disadvantages of these types of homework. The influence of homework on student knowledge and skills is analysed in the article. Two similar surveys about the role of homework in the mathematics teaching-learning process were conducted for groups of students of different specialities of RTU before and after the COVID period (at the beginning of 2020 and the end of 2023). The results of these surveys are also analysed in this paper from two perspectives: to understand the role of homework in the teaching process and to analyse the influence of the online study period during COVID-19 on the completion of homework assignments by students. The report also includes a discussion of using ChatGPT in homework. The conclusion of the necessity of homework is mainly driven by the analysis of the surveys and the detected correlation between the students’ homework results and results in the tests and exams.

Abstract:
Aside from a reduced scope of curriculum, students in the European education system, also relax from homework. In our system, it is generally considered that there is room for changes to the scope of curriculum, but that there must be some kind of a “link” with the teaching topics that were taught outside the classroom, too, to ensure efficient adoption of what was realized in classes. Contemporary theoretical knowledge points at the educational function of homework, for it introduces students into independent acquisition and consolidation of knowledge, trains for independent work, for self-education. This theoretical research focuses on students’ homework in the educational context of contemporary teaching. In the context of such considerations, the starting point is the hypothesis that homework enables an expansion of the teaching process for the time of further development in learning, practicing, repeating, that each child has an opportunity to determine his/her own pace and method of work, that homework motivates students for independent and responsible attitude towards work and obligations. The principal result of this theoretical research suggests that it is necessary to consider the aspects of the way in which students’ homework is conceived and assigned; that homework must be relevant, stimulating and reachable in order to motivate students for successful completion; that it helps promote proper methods of learning and autonomous abilities; that polyvalent application of homework may result in the development of cognitive abilities. Besides, it is certain that homework does not have its educational effect if it is assigned solely because it has to be assigned. Homework needs to fulfil its goal and contribute to as good educational success of each student as possible.

Abstract:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students are learning remotely or in a hybrid of remote and in-school learning. As a result, most teachers and students are in learning situations where more independent work is assigned to students. There is no research that directly speaks to this unprecedented situation. There is, however, a considerable body of established research to draw on about assigning independent work to students to do at home: research on homework. Further, technology to support homework is becoming more available and research supports its effectiveness. In this article, we review some of the major points of this established research and suggest how schools, teachers, and parents and guardians can apply this research and related technology now, during the pandemic.

Arráiz, Irani, and Carla Calero. From Candles to Light: The Impact of Rural Electrification. Inter-American Development Bank, May 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011694.

Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of access to electricity via solar-powered home systems (SHSs) in rural communities in Peru. Applying propensity score matching at the community as well as at the household level, the authors find that households with SHSs spend less on traditional sources of energy---candles and batteries for flashlights---and that the subsequent savings are commensurate to the fee for SHS use. People in households with SHSs spend more time awake, and women in particular change patterns of time use: they spend more time taking care of children, cooking, doing laundry, and weaving for their families, and less time in productive activities outside their homes (farming). Children spend more time doing homework, which has translated into more years of schooling (among elementary school students) and higher rates of enrollment (in secondary school). Although women spend less time farming and men more time on home business activities in households with SHSs than in those without, these changes have had no evident impact on income or poverty.

Abstract:
The UFERN Framework Professional Learning Community project was funded as a supplement to the existing NSF-funded Undergraduate Field Experiences Research Network (UFERN), which sought to build a vibrant, supportive, and sustainable collaborative network that fostered effective undergraduate field experiences. The goals of the UFERN Framework Professional Learning Community (PLC) supplement were: • To support a small group of field educators in intentional design, implementation and assessment of student-centered undergraduate field experiences in a range of field learning contexts; • To develop effective strategies for supporting undergraduate field educators in using the UFERN Framework as an aid for designing, implementing, and assessing student-centered undergraduate field experience programs; • To assemble vignettes featuring applications of the UFERN Framework in a range of program contexts; and • To expand the community of field educators interested in designing, implementing, and assessing student-centered undergraduate field learning experiences. Sixteen educators participated in the PLC, which targeted participants who taught and facilitated a range of undergraduate field experiences (UFEs) that varied in terms of setting, timing, focus and student population. Due to the COVID pandemic, the originally-planned three-month intensive training took place over nine months (January to October 2021). It consisted of seven video conference sessions (via Zoom) with presentations and homework assignments. It included independent work, as well as guided group discussions with project leaders and other participants, which were supported by online collaborative tools.

Abstract:
This paper considers the problem of using mobile Internet devices in the process of biology studying in secondary schools. It has been examined how well the scientific problem is developed in pedagogical theory and educational practice. The methodology of using mobile Internet devices in the process of biology studying in a basic school, which involves the use of the Play Market server applications, Smart technologies and a website, has been created. After the analyses of the Play Market server content, there have been found several free of charge applications, which can be used while studying biology in a basic school. Among them are the following: Anatomy 4D, Animal 4D+, Augmented Reality Dinosaurs – my ARgalaxy, BioInc – Biomedical Plague, Plan+Net. Their choice is caused by the specifics of the object of biological cognition (life in all its manifestations) and the concept of bio(eco)centrism, which recognizes the life of any living system as the highest value. The paper suggests the original approach for homework checking, which involves besides computer control of students’ learning outcomes, the use of Miracast wireless technology. This demands the owning of a smartphone, a multimedia projector, and a Google Chromecast type adapter. The methodology of conducting a mobile front-line survey at the lesson on the learned or current material in biology in the test form, with the help of the free Plickers application, has been presented. The expediency of using the website builder Ucoz.ua for creation of a training website in biology has been substantiated. The methodology of organizing the educational process in biology in a basic school using the training website has been developed. Recommendations for using a biology training website have been summarized. According to the results of the forming experiment, the effectiveness of the proposed methodology of using mobile Internet devices in the process of biology studying in a basic school has been substantiated.
