Kennerly, Alston. "British seamen's missions and sailors' homes 1815 to 1970 : voluntary welfare provision for serving seafarers." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/788.

Abstract:
From the 1820s an ever present feature of most British ports has been the voluntary societies, little- studied before, offering spiritual and social welfare support to serving seafarers. The perspective taken in this study is that although there were numerous individual societies voluntary effort for seafarers constitutes a single movement. The continued existence of many societies well into the twentieth century suggests that the movement should be examined longitudinally in order to assess its contribution in relation to the changing context in which such welfare operated. To establish the internal operations of seamen's missions and. sailors' homes. the records of a selprtirnn nflarge and small societies quantifiable data as well as Particular attention has been target population - seafarers using contemporary sources; using public records, and to changing religious context has that of of social policy, a welfare state. have been examined for other forms of evidence. paid to the nature of the - and the situation in port, to involvement of the State the industrial context. The been examined closely, as has s it progressed towards the The study reveals the considerable voluntary effort which contributed to the movement, confirming the wide coverage of British ports which was achieved and the extent to which it was able to match the growing numbers of seafarers. The product of evangelical interest in the well-being of others, there was particular concern for rescuing the seafarer from the evils of port districts, especially crimping. Though to many seafarers. marginal in religious terms, seafarers' charities were more significant in social terms as the sole providers of social support throughout much of the period of this study. Although some local societies survived to the 1970s, by the 1890s the movement had changed from a mass of local societies to domination by the branch networks of a few national societies. Apart from control of seafaring employment, State intervention was not significant in seafaring welfare except in the 1940s, while the role of the shipping industry was small. The decline of the movement in Britain was linked with the effects of inflation, changing patterns of seafaring and the decline of the British shipping industry. In the broader religious and social welfare contexts, seamen's missions and homes were typical products of the nineteenth century and in their evolution to 1970 paralleled closely developments in religion and social welfare in Britain.

Fincher, James 'Chico'. "The development of a missions link through spiritual interactions between an inner-city congregation and residents of University Homes public housing community (Georgia)." Abstract:
This paper documents the activities of the leadership team of Central United Methodist Church (CUMC) in its outreach mission to University Homes. University Homes is a public-owned housing project located in the heart of the Atlanta University Center community. The primary methodology was the corporate use of an intercessory prayer book, Forty Days for Five People by G. Ross Freeman. The thesis is that spirituality consisting of contemplation and prayer with a foundation of Christian Education are significant tools of empowerment---especially for persons with no previous history of mission outreach---which allow Christians to become committed and involved in order to undertake a coordinated effort of missions to poor and underprivileged persons living in public housing. Also, church leaders and other laity in an affluent middle class church with no previous history of mission involvement with public housing can be equipped spiritually through the vehicle of prayer to undertake a vital mission project. Therefore, the church will begin impacting its community by adhering to its mission statement to impact the community by inviting children, youth and adults to Christ. The leaders were challenged to spend time reflecting and praying for designated people of the community. After this phase, these persons voluntarily visited those for whom they had been interceding in order to openly communicate what the Spirit of Cod had revealed to the leadership, and to lay a foundation in order to build meaningful relationships. This project will focus on the dynamics and praxis of the local church's attempt to participate in vital missions in a public housing project, and the role of the associate pastor as mediator/facilitator between the public housing community and the church. The purpose of this study is to examine the reasons inner-city churches have problems engaging in missions to local public housing residents. This project will also present a model with specific alternatives for inner-city churches to become better neighbors in missions to their local communities. Chapter I outlines the overall purpose for the study, presenting the ministry setting and the associate pastor's role in developing strategies for missions praxis. Chapter II focuses on the project in action and the phases of this outreach ministry. Chapter III recounts the history of missions, highlights the relationship of the black church to its community, and reviews the literature on urban mission models for inner-city churches. Chapter IV provides insight into the implications of this project through discussions of spirituality and Christian Education. Chapter V concludes with evaluations, project summary, and reflections.

Abstract:
Mountain Mission School of Grundy, Virginia, founded by Samuel Robinson Hurley in 1921, is an anomaly of the mission school era of 1880 to 1940. Unlike other mission schools, Mountain Mission School was independent from its inception and was founded by a self-taught, self-made millionaire from southwest Virginia. The school's purpose to "reclaim" the child from material and spiritual poverty lay in Hurley's desire to develop a child's mind, body, and soul through a Christian, industrial education. Through personal commitment to the school and tireless fund-raising efforts for the school, he inspired others to continue the mission he began. Primary sources from Radford University, Milligan College, and Mountain Mission School, plus contemporary articles published in the Christian Standard, defend these claims.

Abstract:
My thesis is an exploration of sacred space in architecture. The vehicle for this exploration is a homeless mission and transitional shelter in Alexandria, Virginia. Homelessness is a constant battle for both individuals and communities, precipitating disjointed and fragmented lives. I hoped to design a dignified urban dwelling where man is able to remember who he is, his purpose, and his direction, while also participating in healthy and fruitful community.

Abstract:
Throughout the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, Catholic community members of Roman Catholic religious orders left France to join Canada. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean to follow the call of missionary appeal, to pursue an ecclesiastical and professional career, or to save a religious vocation threatened by the anticlerical policy of the French government. This particular phenomenon, neglected in religious and migration history, fueled a transatlantic missionary migration system since the beginning of the nineteenth century. At the crossroads of several historiographical fields, this thesis addresses the study of this peculiar migratory movement, both at the collective and individual level, in order to understand the place occupied by Canada in the migratory path of French clerics between 1842 and 1914

Campbell, Keith Alexander. "Free Church of Scotland and the territorial ideal, 1843-1900." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10622.

Full text
Abstract:
The Free Church of Scotland's home-mission campaign played a major role in the Church's attempt to define itself as the true national Church of Scotland following the Disruption of the Church of Scotland in 1843. It also represented the Free Church's effort to confront the problems of irreligion and social degradation which accompanied industrialisation and urbanisation. The study begins with the contribution of Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847). As a Church of Scotland minister in Glasgow between 1815 and 1823, Chalmers endeavoured to make the parish the focal point for the local community. Chalmers was supported in his ministry by a large voluntary agency which visited local residents and encouraged self-help and communal responsibility. He created a system of day and Sunday schools, and sought to reform the system of poor relief. The aim was to create self-reliant district communities, through what was termed the 'territorial plan'. This thesis argues that Chalmers' posthumous contribution to home-mission work, through his writings on the territorial plan and missionary work in Glasgow and Edinburgh, profoundly influenced the social outreach of all the Presbyterian Churches, and especially the Free Church, in nineteenth-century Scotland. Territorialism gave the Presbyterian Churches a valuable link to those groups in society which had been adversely affected by urbanisation and industrialisation. The thesis also considers how the home-mission movement in Scotland was influenced by external forces such as political, social and economic developments as well as religious matters such as theological controversies, Church union negotiations and a growing disestablishment campaign. This thesis demonstrates how the Free Church's territorial campaign was a fundamental aspect of its commitment to an essentially new, predominantly urban society.

Shankar, Francesco. "Super-massive Black Holes: the missing link in galaxy evolution." Doctoral thesis, SISSA, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11767/4086.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the key points concerning the evolution of the local Super-massive Black Hole (SMBH) population and to understand the origin of the links the SMBH have with their host spheroidal galaxies and dark matter (DM) halos. In fact the tight correlations observed among the SMBH mass, the photometric and dynamical properties of the host galaxy and DM halo, suggest that these systems must have co-evolved during time building up together. The study of the statistical mass distribution of the local SMBH population and galaxies and their link with the overall AGN statistics are fundamental tools to get important physical insights on the basic average features of SMBH evolution. Any galaxy formation model must compare with such findings. For this purpose I have worked with the semi-analytical code developed by Granato et al. (2004) to physically model SMBH evolution in galaxies and DM halos, compare model results with empirical derivations and make predictions. In particular, my work has been primarily to tune the parameters and also try to arrange minor modifications, where needed, in order to cope with the variety of the numerous empirical data the model can successfully account for.

Abstract:
In the XVIIth century, the conquering advance of Spaniards was met by resistance from territories and men in the north of New Spain. The vast septentrional reaches were then consolidated as frontier regions, as the most remote areas were barely explored, while regions located closer to settlement centers were progressively, yet precariously, integrated to monarchy. In the course of the century, missionaries, especially Franciscans and Jesuits, played a very active role in the appropriation process of border regions. As explorers, evangelists and colonizers for the King of Spain, they gradually settled in the septentrional regions. At first, it was necessary to imagine unknown reaches: California, New Mexico. Picking from a set of myths and knowledge with a dual – European and Native American – origin, the priests drew up maps and reports of the coveted areas. As time passed, representations showed increased American influence. In parallel, as integration of New Biscay progressed, the Company of Jesus articulated a network of missions with the objective to christianize – “civilize” – populations and occupy the territories that resisted conquest. The missionaries had to adapt their appropriation strategies to land characteristics. Finally, missionaries had to face difficult life conditions at the northern frontiers, and were at times disheartened in their work and lapsed into rather unorthodox behaviors from a religious point of view

Lynch, Kate. ""For a splendid cause" : Irish missionary nuns at home and on the mission field, 1921-1962." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/14116/.

Full text
Abstract:
In the years following Ireland's political independence in 1922 the popularity of its missionary movement was unprecedented. This most Catholic of endeavours helped to assert Ireland's difference from Britain. Religious women actively participated in this process. Their medical work and subsequent representations of the mission fields contributed to a rhetoric of Irish nationalism that served to define postcolonial Ireland within a universal, Catholic discourse. However, the location of their missionary spaces, largely in British colonial Africa, brought the sisters into contact with the empire from which Ireland had recently withdrawn. In their encounters with local people, the sisters perpetuated a form of colonialism that will be studied as a seeming contradiction to the Catholic Church's stance against British rule in Ireland. This is conducted through the lens of gender, and exposes the variation in Catholic-informed ideals of femininity in this postcolonial period of Ireland's history. To study these nuns is to explore the gendered and uneven power relations within the Church, their contribution to the expansion of Catholicism and their ambiguous role in empire. By drawing on the scalar connections between varied missionary spaces including the body, convent and domestic home, in both Ireland and Tanganyika, this thesis contributes to broader debates in historical geography and postcolonial theory.

Abstract:
Toponymy systematizes the names of places, describes the structure and formation of these names, being translated into a form of identification, orientation, and referral. On the assumption that names of places have an intimate association with the cultural values of the people, they reflect the historical relevance of facts and customs, besides directly dealing with discovery, occupation, and ownership of geographical space. In light of this, this study aims at studying the proper names of places, in the northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul, based on the route of Jesuit presence in this state the Seven Peoples of the Mission -, named classical phase, the period between 1682 and 1756, conducting identification, classification, and spatialization of these toponyms. The region chosen for this study is of great cultural richness and target of many researches. However, studies that approach the local toponymy are unknown. In order to implement this study, besides the geographical focus, a historical retrospective was conducted over the first attempts of the colonizers of the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul, a review of toponymy and its classification models, as well as a study about the place while geographic category of analysis. This research, of qualitative and quantitative approach, began with a biographical and documental exploratory study and made use of fieldwork to broaden the possibilities of data collection. The categorization of the toponyms found was based on the taxonomy presented by Dick (1990a), used for the Brazilian reality. The processes of formation, structuring, and motivation of toponyms were analyzed through lexicographic-toponymic files, that integrate the methodological base of the study of toponyms. The data analysis showed toponymy as one of the possibilities to understand the land formation, since the names of places are a kind of repository that contains he memory and history of the place, manifested by the temporal layers of space occupation. After around 400 years since the formation of the first Jesuit-Guaraní reduction in the state, these toponyms remain as live presence of a way of interaction and spatial occupation, by different cultures and their way of interacting among themselves and with nature, and they prove that the initial memory of the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul is closely connected to the presence of indigenous peoples and European missionaries in that space.

Despite site-based decison making (SBDM) educational mandates, research determined the virtual exclusion of parents, family, and/or home as co-authoritative voice in Texas public school district mission statements. Qualitative analysis determined six parent roles within 155 inclusive mission statements through rhetorical deconstruction, a text-based grammatical evaluation procedure; quantitative analysis determined no significance between inclusive and exclusive districts in factors of size, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. The implications of this study add further support to the growing parental insistence for greater educational decision-making options: ie., home schooling, voucher system, and charter schools.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the Security Governance of the European Union (EU) by examining the relationship between the external dimension of Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) and civilian crisis management missions. More specifically it tests the capacity of EU level actors to project the external dimension of JHA's goals, in a coordinated and coherent fashion, into the Union's near abroad. The research 'puzzle' lies in the multi-dimensional character of the external dimension of JHA. The fact that the domains tools and competencies are spread within and across all three pillars of the EU make its coordination with civilian crisis management missions far from straight-forward. The ambition to link the two policy domains has been expressed repeatedly by the EU in high profile strategic documents, such as the European Security Strategy of 2003, and the 2005 'A Strategy for the External Dimension of JHA: Global Freedom, Security and Justice'. This thesis endeavours to test the EU's performance in governing the external dimension of JHA and the need to link its goals with those of civilian crisis management missions. It does this by taking three civilian crisis management missions recently projected into the EU's milieu, with mandates related to security sector reform and JHA. The missions selected for comparison are: Proxima launched in 2003 in Macedonia; EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine launched in 2005; and finally, EULEX Kosovo launched in 2008. These missions are selected to serve as prime test cases for the interface between JHA and civilian crisis management missions, covering a time period that will allow for an examination of continuity and change in foreign and security policy at the EU level.

Abstract:
This thesis is divided in two parts: the first part is dedicated to the study of black hole solutions in a theory of modified gravity, called massive gravity, that may be able to explain the actual stage of accelerated expansion of the Universe, while in the second part we focus on constraining primordial black holes as dark matter candidates.

In particular, during the first part we study the thermodynamical properties of specific black hole solutions in massive gravity. We conclude that such black hole solutions do not follow the second and third of law of thermodynamics, which may signal a problem in the model. For instance, a naked singularity may be created as a result of the evolution of a singularity-free state.

In the second part, we constrain primordial black holes as dark matter candidates. To do that, we consider the effect of primordial black holes when they interact with compact objects, such as neutron stars and white dwarfs. The idea is as follows: if a primordial black hole is captured by a compact object, then the accretion of the neutron star or white dwarf’s material into the hole is so fast that the black hole destroys the star in a very short time. Therefore, observations of long-lived compact objects impose constraints on the fraction of primordial black holes. Considering both direct capture and capture through star formation of primordial black holes by compact objects, we are able to rule out primordial black holes as the main component of dark matter under certain assumptions that are discussed.

To better understand the relevance of these subjects in modern cosmology, we begin the thesis by introducing the standard model of cosmology and its problems. We give particular emphasis to modifications of gravity, such as massive gravity, and black holes in our discussion of the dark sector of the Universe./

Abstract:
In this research we try to establish the relation that exists between material culture, symbols and representations used in the Jesuit missions in the Province of the Paraguay (or Paracuaria). Our objective is to understand, from the archaeological record, material transformations and changing perceptions between 1610 and 1767. Urban space organizes social realities and plays a key role in the transformation of environment and society. This materiality also reinforces actions and rituals as new practices and behaviors are introduced and reinforced over time. In this sense, the mission space acquires symbolic dimensions with specific narratives that serve to organise aspects of daily life within the mission structure. Located between the Spanish and Portuguese empires in South America, the Jesuit Province of the Paraguay founded in 1607 was the theatre of conflict for control of the territory. The first missions (Nuestra Señora de Loreto and San Ignacio Miní) were founded in 1610 in present day Brazil. In 1631, the sites were left due to attacks by the Bandeirantes or Portuguese slave holders of São Paulo that attempted to enslave populations of converted Guarani Amerindians. The missions were Jesuit enclaves in an embattled territory and were considered an obstacle to the expansion of the Portuguese crown in South American. In 1631, the missions were moved to temporary locations and then were relocated several times thereafter. These successive changes produced new interpretations of their world and society that we can observe in the material culture record. Using a multidisciplinary approach, we will outline transformations in the organization of mission space and material culture. This will give us a more complete vision of their internal organization. A historical perspective will allow us to establish the relationships between the subjects and their socio-political conditions in the mission settings. We will then see that certain objects played specific roles within defined contexts, which we must understand to establish their precise functions. Finally, we will analyze changes in the material culture from a phenomenological perspective, as this will allow us to deconstruct the narratives and ideologies that impregnates them. This exercise will allow us to establish what we believe to be the essential meaning of these objects and we will interpret their intentionality in transmitting notions of ideology and social practice.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to enhance our understanding of the early American republic by providing a study of the home missions movement from 1787 to 1845. The home missions movement was a nationwide, multi-denominational religious movement, led by mission societies, and aimed at bringing the Protestant gospel to the various peoples of the states and territories. A history of this movement not only fills a gap in the historiography of early American religious history, but also enlightens our understanding of the broader socio-political world of the early republic. The founding years of the home missions movement, from 1787 to 1815, were led by Congregationalists, Presbyterians, and Baptists. Despite interdenominational competition at home and diplomatic tension with Britain, Protestants tended to cooperate both interdenominationally and transatlantically in order to achieve broader, evangelical goals in their missions. Home missions societies also shed light on a third form of cooperation: cooperation between church and state. We can better understand the relationship between church and state in the early republic by rejecting the idea that these two entities functioned separately. Instead, they functioned within a complex system of cooperation, evidenced by consistent government subsidization of and participation in missions to both white settlers and Indians, as well as by a broad culture of cooperation with Protestant projects in American society. During the early antebellum period, the home missions movement underwent a significant transformation, from functioning as a nationwide group of loosely-affiliated societies, which focused on nearby peoples, to a highly-centralized affair, dominated by a handful of national mission societies, which focused on the salvation of the entire nation. The growing importance of the population of the Mississippi Valley and the national trend toward a more centralized government and economic system played the two key roles in this transformation. This centralization - religious, economic, and political - helped give rise to the antimission movement, a nationwide Protestant protest against mission societies. This movement sheds light on the religious and ideological underpinnings of antebellum sectionalism.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the missiology of I. T. Tichenor, corresponding secretary of the Home Mission Board from 1882-1900, and provides implications of his missiology on contemporary Southern Baptist North American Missions. Chapter 1 introduces the need for this dissertation and gives the thesis, background, limitations, and methodology of the dissertation. Chapter 2 gives a brief biography of I. T. Tichenor. Tichenor lived from 1825 to 1902, which was one of the most transitional periods in American history. His early life, pastorates, service as a civil war chaplain, service as president of Alabama A&M, and service as corresponding secretary of the Home Mission Board are highlighted. Chapter 3 gives the biblical and theological foundations of Tichenor. Tichenor's beliefs about God, the condition of man, the work of Christ, the nature of the Bible, salvation, and the Christian life are examined. Additionally, his view of evangelism, ecclesiology, the cultural mandate, and the end times are examined. Chapter 4 presents the missiology of I. T. Tichenor in regard to the Great Commission, the use of demographics, cooperation, church planting, church planting missionaries, indigenous leadership, the church building, and use of resources are presented. Chapter 5 gives implications on contemporary Southern Baptist North American missions. After giving the condition of Southern Baptist North American missions, implications are given from Tichenor's missiology that could spur a Great Commission Resurgence. Chapter 6 draws conclusions from the previous chapters. The conclusion states this dissertation gives Southern Baptists a historical precedence in accomplishing a Great Commission Resurgence.

Abstract:
“Missing Homes” examines three nineteenth-century authors whose experiences of displacement from home, professions and/or class influenced their literary innovations. Displacement is not a new theme to scholars of nineteenth-century literature, who have established it as a defining experience of an era characterized by financial crises, industrial development, migration and empire. However, scholarship on displacement has often focused on how novels train readers to manage the experience of displacement and has depicted the emotions like nostalgia that arise from it as potentially compensatory or reconciliatory to the dynamics of capitalism. “Missing Homes” departs from these narratives to explore authors who found displacement anything but manageable or liberating and whose works illustrate a more unstable spectrum of emotional responses to displacement and its dire long-term consequences. Attention to these authors, I argue, offers a parallel theory of nostalgia in which the unsettled longing for a place to call home registers political discontent with the relationship between the individual and the collective rather than reconciles the individual to displacement. Departing from critics who have focused primarily on the work performed by metaphors and figures of the domestic, “Missing Homes” engages in biographical readings of the lives, economic circumstances and fiction of Edgar Allan Poe, Charlotte Brontë and Charles Dickens to show how they pursued fantasies of securing homes that could remove them from undesirable personal, economic and political conditions. The failures of these fantasies reveal how conventional narratives describing how individuals might attain security often fail in the face of collective economic conditions in which attaining objects like a home is both economically challenging and often emotionally unfulfilling. Although the variables of their lives were different, I suggest that these authors’ stories of displacement fail to perform therapeutic or intervening work, because the problem of displacement is rooted in material conditions that narrative innovation alone cannot resolve. Instead, readers should derive from these texts and their failures the need for more collective forms of security.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT IMPROVING THE LEVEL OF CARE FOR SOUTHERN BAPTIST INTERCULTURAL MISSIONARIES SERVING IN NORTH AMERICA Trent Isaac DeLoach, D.Miss. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2013 Chair: Dr. J. D. Payne This dissertation explores the contemporary conditions and challenges of Southern Baptist cross-cultural missionaries serving in North America for the purpose of determining how Southern Baptists can improve the level of care for their domestic missionaries. The dissertation will be guided by three basic questions: How are the missionaries doing? What challenges are they facing? How can Southern Baptists better care for their needs? The spiritual, physical, emotional, and financial condition of the missionaries will receive special attention. An effort will be made to identify challenges that are unique to cross-cultural missionaries in the North American context. Finally, the data obtained from the missionaries will determine how Southern Baptists can improve the level of care for its domestic missionaries. Chapter 2 describes the significance of cross-cultural missions in North America. Research will be presented that reveals the growing gap between the diversity of North America and the diversity found within Southern Baptist churches. Chapter 3 presents the results from the qualitative research gained from the surveys, interviews, and site visits. Special attention is paid to the spiritual, physical, emotional, and financial condition of the missionaries. The missionaries' assessment of the care they are receiving from the Southern Baptist entities concludes the chapter. Chapter 4 provides a response and an interpretation of the data collected from the study. Strengths and weaknesses of Southern Baptist care for cross-cultural missionaries in North America are explored. Chapter 5 concludes the study by presenting a strategy to improve missionary care in North America among Southern Baptists. The strategy includes practical steps that can be taken to ensure Southern Baptists remain on the frontlines of engaging the nations in North America. Chapter 6 reviews the salient observations from the study and presents areas that need further research.

Impedance control is an important research topic in human-robot interaction be-cause it can increase the safety and the variety of interactions. The thesis realizes an impedance control system by mounting a 6-axis force sensor on the wrist of the home service robot. When the robot and a person are walking hand on hand, the robot detects the handing force from the person and generates a suitable pose of its end-effector and a moving path of its mobile platform to accomplish the leading and the guiding missions. The proposed impedance control system treats the end-effector of the robot arm as a point mass with physical property and detects the force from the environment to calcu-late the next pose which it should move to. Therefore, the arm can move following the force imposed by the person. For further improving the performance, we add a fuzzy controller to real-time adjust three parameters of the impedance control system and to plan the moving direction and velocity of the robot. In this thesis, we implement the impendence control system in leading and guiding missions. In the leading mission, the person leads the robot to go through a specific path. Whereas, the robot can guide a blind person by handing on her/his hand in the guiding mission. All the real experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed system and the robot successfully accom-plishes these two missions.

Abstract:
Missing children is one of the horrors that we are confronted with in today's society. The case study method, a feminist co-search methodology, is used to give a missing child's mother the opportunity to tell and re-tell the painful story. During this co-search process the following aspects of doing ethics and pastoral care and counselling with the mother are constantly negotiated. The term "missing child" is defined and the relevance between the distinction of "missing children" and "run-away children" is discussed. Furthermore, this study explores the many diverse practices of narrative pastoral care and counselling with parents of missing children within an economically disadvantaged community. The conceptualisations regarding loss, hope and meaning-making and how these are utilised in the life of a missing child's mother is discussed.

Institutional goals or mission statements are parts of the accreditation criteria for nursing homes. If nursing homes can not achive the accreditation criteria that will affect their sustainable development of reelizing future. Therefore, the clarity level of mission statement components can make staff to understand the business objective and the scope of business. The measurable mission statements can offer strategic planning, action guilde, and develop criteria measurement. The agreement level of Mission statements rationales, clearity level of mission statement content, mission statement satisfaction, organizational alignment influence all can affect organizational quality and performance in health care institutions. This research aim to explore the causal path among agreement level of Mission statements rationales, clearity level of mission statement content, mission statement satisfaction, organizational alignment influence with organizational performance satisfaction. This research uses a mailed questionnaire survey method to collect relevant data. Questionnaire surveys were sent out to the heads of operations of 346 nursing homes nationwide during the period between April and June 2009 and, after calling twice to urge the return of the questionnaires, a total of 118 questionnaires were returned, which gave a return rate of 34.1%. Results of the survey goodness-of-fit show that the region, the nursing homes seniority, and the bed size are similar with population. The cronbach’α all are greater than 0.8, and content validity index is greater than 0.9. After that, using the analysis for descriptive statistic analysis, correlation analysis, factor analysis, independent sample T test, one-way ANOVA analysis, multiple resression, partial least squares to explore the relationship among agreement level of Mission statements rationales, clearity level of mission statement content, mission statement satisfaction, organizational alignment influence with organizational performance satisfaction. The study results are as below: 1. Correlation analysis: agreement level of Mission statements rationales, clearity level of mission statement content, mission statement satisfaction, organizational alignment influence have postive relationship with organizational performance satisfaction. After factor analysis clearity level of mission statement content were separate for two deminsion, called “ends” and “means”, it’s will effect organizational performance satisfaction postivly. 2. Independent sample T test and one-way ANOVA analysis: agreement level of Mission statements rationales was significantly different with agency management style and seniority of nursing homes. (1)The clearity levels of mission statement content-end was significantly different with agency management styles. (2)Mission statement satisfactions was significantly different with education levels and seniority of the heads of operations. 3.Multiple regression:The clearity levels of mission statement content-end (ß=0.270,p=0.014), mission statement satisfaction(ß=0.551,p=0.000) can affect organizational performance satisfaction, with total variance explained 29.8%. 4. Partial Least Squares: We construct agreement level of Mission statements rationales, clearity level of mission statement content, mission statement satisfaction, organizational alignment influence with organizational performance satisfaction of the causal path model. The composite reliability(CR) are greater than 0.7,Average Variance Extracted(AVE) are greater than 0.5, showing our model with good reliability and validity. Besides, (1)the heads of operations’s agreement level of Mission statements rationales can through clearity level of mission statement content-end and mission statement satisfaction to postively affect organizational performance satisfaction; (2)the heads of operations’s agreement level of Mission statements rationales also can through clearity level of mission statement content-end to postively affect organizational alignment influence. To improve organizational performance satisfaction (average occupancy rate, market share, growth rates of resident coming, quality management) should strengthen the development of mission statement of the reasons for motivation, and increase the factors clearity level of mission statement-ends and mission statement satisfaction; and wishing to increase of the mission statement and the degree of organization and management linkages, they should also strengthen the grounds for the development of the motivation of a mission statement, and promote the mission statement of the clarity of the purpose of elements.

It is therefore the aim of this study to understand the theology of SDA mission between 1992 and 2005. Commencing in 1875, with the first overseas missionary's arrival, the mission theology of the German SDA-Church will be roughly sketched through 1990. The following enquiry deals primarily with the various levels of SDA-leadership, with Adventist print media, institutional work and special mission-conceived events. Generally, statements concerning missiology will be studied with regard to their content and meaning. In particular cases quantitative data will be considered and evaluated. This will lead to fundamental data, apt to answer the following questions: - How do Adventists define the term mission? - Do German Adventists dispose of missionary concepts or an overarching mission strategy? - Do they take up the challenge of self-reflection concerning their mission in order to enhance success? The individual objects and questions studied in this thesis are structured to be evaluated at the end of each chapter. Questions raised will be attempted to be answered satisfactorily. The result of this study is the unveiling of several strengths and weaknesses of the Adventist understanding of mission in Germany. It is therefore the goal of this study to enhance further discussion by pointing to relevant facts. Initial starting points could be seen in the conclusions drawn, thereby rendering mission efforts of the German SDA church more effective.

Abstract:

This dissertation explores the history of the Assemblies of God's Home Missions to American Indians, the development of an American Indian leadership in the denomination and the development of a Pentecostal Indian identity. The history that is told in this work is that of a century-long struggle by American Indian Pentecostals for autonomy, leadership, and recognition within the Assemblies of God. I argue that the AG's efforts to establish indigenous churches in its home missions work to American Indians bore two important and largely unanticipated consequences. The first was that it prompted American Indian Pentecostals to forge a new identity: fully Indian and fully Pentecostal. The second was that it forced white Pentecostals to own up to their belief in the indigenous principle: that God's Spirit fell equally on peoples, without regard to ethnicity or social standing. I focus mainly on giving voice to the Pentecostal Indian actors in this history, in order to fill in the gaps on a group of modern Pentecostal believers that were almost never written about in the histories of the movement.

I have rooted this work in the history of American religious history, as well as Native American history and the history of American Pentecostalism. The majority of the sources come from the Assemblies of God's archives, chiefly, ministerial files, Pentecostal periodicals, letters, tracts, meeting minutes, and self-published autobiographies.

Home care is a job that requires patience and love. Home care attendants often be required to increase the labor of non-working areas during the service process, but to accomodate the needs of the family. Therefore, they are willing to accept the low salary, poor welfare, and work with blurred content, a wide range of work, and a lack of peer-to-peer connections. The fit will be affected by the consistency of characteristics and values by employees and organizations. Employees also have an impact on the importance of organizational characteristics and values. Whether or not the mission statement is clearly written will affect the employee's job satisfaction and job performance. There is less research on the personal and organizational values of the home care attendant to discuss it. The study explored the relationship between mission statement and person-organizational fit with organizational behavior of home care attendant and constructing impact models. Obtained the consent of the 3 home service agencies in the south. During the survey period, from September to November, the questionnaire was issued during the regular monthly home care attendant meeting. 142 home care attendants were collected for research, and 134 questionnaires were collected, 125 data samples were valid and the effective questionnaire collection rate was 93.3%. Descriptive analysis, single factor analysis, and T-test, Pearson correlation analysis, and complex regression analysis. The results show that person and organizational fit, job satisfaction, and job performance have an impact on organizational characteristics. Person and organization fit is significantly positively correlated with job satisfaction and job performance; the clarity of the mission statement is significantly positively correlated with job satisfaction and job performance. Regression analysis found that the satisfaction of the supervisor and the rewards will have a positive impact on the clarity of the mission statement of the means, but it will have a negative impact on the work content due to environmental changes; the satisfaction of the work itself will have a positive impact on the mission statement of the means clarity; the satisfaction of achievement and promotion will have a positive impact on the mission statement of competition and unique goals; the contextual performance of supporting the organization's goals and insist on completing the task will have a positive impact on the mission statement of the means clarity; the contextual performance of cooperation and helping others will have a positive impact on age. It is recommended that institutional managers and employees should establish communication channels and education training, timely understand the living conditions and working conditions of employees, and conduct on-the-job training. In addition, the mission statement is clearly categorized and written, and the awareness of the mission statement issues is enhanced to more effectively achieve the fit of individual and organizational values, thereby improving organizational performance and employee job satisfaction.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores how urbanization and immigration affect the worldview and cultural identity of immigrants. Chapter 1 introduces the dissertation and presents the research problem. The chapter also defines key terms, gives the author's background, sets limitations and delimitations, and overviews research methods employed in the writing of this dissertation. Chapter 2 provides a literature review, synthesis, and analysis of works in the fields of urban anthropology, orality studies, and church planting. Chapter 3 explores the relationship of immigration and cultural identity. The chapter discusses ways in which urban areas encourage or limit cultural production of residents and how immigrants respond to those pressures as they express their cultural identity. The chapter concludes with an analysis of three models of assimilation likely to be found in urban contexts. Chapter 4 presents the oral worldview, including the nature of oral cognition, oral community, and methods of oral communication. After describing primary oral cultures, the chapter discusses the introduction of literacy to an oral people and the effects of residual orality. Chapter 5 draws together research presented in chapters 2 through 4 and discusses a grounded approach for identifying and reaching ethnic groups in the city. The first section presents methods to conduct ethnographic research so church planters can understand the specific dynamics in their communities. The second section discusses issues germane to reaching ethnic groups in the city including mono or multi-ethnic church, orality issues, critical contextualization, strategies for ministering in the three assimilation models presented in chapter 3, and the need for church partnerships. Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation by summarizing key points from each chapter. The chapter also describes the application of the dissertation to urban settings outside of North America and discusses the need for further research on related topics beyond the scope of this dissertation.

Abstract:
The use of ubiquitous computing to help firefighters in the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) missions, has been studied in the Cooperation between Human and rObotic teams in catastroPhic INcidents (CHOPIN) project, with the aim of exploring cooperation between human and robotic teams in the context of these missions, decentralizing some decisions so that they can be made closer to the place to which they relate, based on existing information. In this context, this dissertation presents an architecture for the USAR mission system and develops an interface for the Command Center of Operations (”Centro de Comando de Opera¸c˜oes”) (CCO), integrating the context-aware software platform with the required tools for planning and monitoring USAR missions, leaving the detection and interpretation of data to other computing entities on the ground, thus enhancing situational awareness and establishing a common ground to support decision making of the tactical actors. The interface is developed by addressing interaction design techniques to fulfill situationawareness and human-robot interaction requirements, in order to support collaboration between human and robotic teams, thus proposing a message taxonomy to provide information interchange among agents, displaying and registering the collected data on the ground by individual agents, such as maps, locations and status of several features as victims and fire outbreaks, as well as environmental conditions in the Theatre of Operations (”Teatro de Opera¸c˜oes”) (TO) in a relational database. The overview of the operations on the ground is presented using the services provided by the Google Maps Application Programming Interface (API), allowing an overall picture of the TO, existing resources and the state of the mission. The sharing of information between the CCO and agents on the ground is made via a bidirectional and asynchronous WebSocket, and is based on the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework and a pre-defined set of messages to share information cooperatively by firefighters and robotic agents to fulfill the mission, using the format JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). The compression of transmitted information proved critical to communications with limited bandwidth and high traffic volumes, usually found in USAR scenarios.

This thesis mainly implements human following function for home service robot, May, developed in our laboratory. In order to follow the operator accurately, visual tracking is composed by Tracking-Learning-Detection (TLD) and Kinect skeleton, where TLD plays the role as re-detecting the situation that operator is occluded or disappeared, and Kinect skeleton is adopted to track all other situations while TLD is learning how to enlarge operator image patterns in order to enhance recognition rates. For the sake of improving tracking capability, fuzzy head motion control is added in the visual tracking system to compensate the constraints that the mobile platform of May cannot react rapidly. Every instant movement of the operator can be captured by fuzzy head motion control in real time. Q-learning is applied to discover the pose switching of the mobile platform such that May possesses more robust following ability. By Q-learning, states setting are based on three dimensional position, actions are created by the pose of four wheel independent steering and four wheel independent driven (4WIS4WID) platform, and rewards are established on state transitions. Finally, both the experimental results in the laboratory and competition consequents of Follow Me Mission in robot@home league at RoboCup Japan Open 2013 Tokyo demonstrate that our robot May can fluently switch its poses to follow operator by utilizing the proposed schemes.
