Abstract:
Smart devices are increasingly being designed for, and adopted in, the home environment. Prior scholarship has investigated the challenges that users face as they take up these devices in their homes. However, little is known about when and how users or potential users would prefer future domestic Internet of Things (IoT) to support their activities in home settings. To fill this gap, we conducted two co-design workshops, an in-home activity between the two sessions, and pre- and post-study interviews with 18 adult participants, who had diverse levels of prior experience of IoT use. Our findings contribute new insights into how smart home devices could adapt their behavior based on social contexts; how to re-imagine agency and support useful intelligibility; and how to resolve user-driven conflict by providing appropriate information about those with whom devices are shared. Finally, based on these findings, we discuss the implications of our work and provide a set of design considerations from which designers of future smart home technologies can benefit.

Abstract:
Home economics operates in the academic, curriculum and social realms, as well as in everyday life. Due to its multidisciplinarity, it includes and interconnects the contents of different disciplines (e.g., healthy lifestyle, nutrition, dietetics, textiles, home, family, consumption, personal and family economics, design and technology), which are considered in terms of meeting the needs of the individual, family, and society. Home economics education and literacy play an important role in acquiring knowledge and skills that help raise the quality of life of the individual, family, and society. With the development of society, the needs of both the individual and the family are changing; therefore, changes are also needed in home economics education, which is reflected in the updating of the subject curricula. The goals and contents in the curriculum must reflect and meet the needs of the current society and take into account the cultural dependence and social determinism of the home economics field. To a certain extent, the current curriculum of the subject home economics in Slovene elementary schools already includes some content areas that have been recognised as important for meeting the needs of society. These relate to healthy lifestyle, nutrition, health, textiles, consumption, economics, family, environment and sustainable development. Given the perceived needs of society, the use of household appliances, home contents, and first aid should be additionally included in home economics education in Slovenia, and students should be encouraged to develop social and communication skills. It is also necessary to consider the appropriate placement of the subject in the curriculum, as it is necessary to implement home economics education in the entire elementary school education. Doing so will enable the acquisition of knowledge and skills needed in society and, therefore, the appropriate level of home economics literacy of the individual.

Abstract:
Digital innovation processes are becoming more and more networked, and actors are growing dependent on each other’s competences, resources and knowledge. In networks developing digital innovation actors need to identify, mobilize, and integrate diverse and heterogeneous knowledge resources to be able to innovate successfully. Social aspects are important where heterogeneous actors connect, negotiate, and adjust to each other’s perspectives. The aim of this paper is to explain how social aspects such as trust, commitment and power, influence changes in relationships in digital innovation networks. A case study approach was selected to study events involving multiple actors in an innovation and development project aimed at introducing technology that aids elderly, home care personnel and next of kin by improving the management of home care visits. Based on the authors’ findings they present a model for how social aspects influence changes in relationships and conclude by making six propositions.

Abstract:
The object of this research is the senior citizens, who are the objects of close attention of the corresponding government bodies, institutions of social and medical care, nonprofit organizations, and social entrepreneurs. It is revealed that despite joint efforts of the government and society aimed at maintaining the quality of their lives, senior citizens, for various reasons, often find themselves lonely, deprived of the care of their families. Therefore, the subject of this research is the alternative form of social service for senior citizens – foster home. The article examines the social, economic, psychological, and sociological aspects of implementation of such service. Special attention is given to the concept of foster home for senior citizens, as a form of organization of life, which implies sharing living space and household of citizens who concluded a foster home agreement. The article explores such aspects as the procedure for creating foster families, basic statistical data, regional peculiarities, social and economic effectiveness. The studied indicators reveal the factors that impede the creation of more foster homes. The authors’ special contribution lies in systematization of the key indicators of social effectiveness of foster homes: improvement of psychological state of senior citizens, mending family relationships, joint overcoming of different household problems, mutual respect and help, living in a home environment, and revival of the traditions of family and community care for older generation.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTBackground:Daily life is a dynamic and multidimensional concept, for which appropriate assessment tools are lacking. This study describes the development of the Maastricht Electronic Daily Life Observation tool (MEDLO-tool), a freely accessible, easy to use, electronic observation tool to assess relevant daily life aspects for nursing home residents with dementia.Methods:(1) Determining relevant aspects of daily life for nursing home residents with dementia based on a literature search and expert interviews; (2) pilot testing observation procedures and operationalizations of the aspects of daily life; and (3) exploring inter-rater reliability and feasibility of the tool in a nursing home facility with 16 residents (56% female, mean age: 77).Results:The following aspects of daily life are assessed with the MEDLO-tool: (1) activity (activity performed by resident, engagement in this activity, and the degree of physical effort); (2) physical environment (location of the resident and interaction with the physical environment); (3) social interaction (the level and type of social interaction, and with whom this social interaction took place); and (4) emotional well-being (mood and agitation). Each aspect of daily life is observed and scored using standardized scoring options. Agreement on the aspects is high with an average absolute agreement of 86%. Users of the MEDLO-tool indicated that it was feasible in practice and contained clear operationalization of the aspects of daily life. Conclusions:The MEDLO-tool is a promising tool to gain real time insight into the aspects of the daily lives of nursing home residents with dementia.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the social significance of the integration of the home into computer networks. The social significance of home networking is grasped when these systems are understood in their relationship to emerging forms of electronic social control. The thesis establishes this connection through an analysis of structural trends in the videotex industry which demonstrates the value to the corporate sector of cybernetic information generated by interactive systems. The North American tradition of privacy policy is reviewed and demonstrated as inadequate for the protection of personal privacy in home networking. It is further shown that privacy policy does not represent an adequate theorization of social control in computer networking, since it does not account for practices of aggregate social control, which have been termed in the thesis "social management," so vital to the cybernetic economy of late capitalism. Finally, the thesis argues that current conceptual frameworks and policy mechanisms cannot assure the socially beneficial development of home networking, given the tendency towards the integration of such systems into structures of social control.

Abstract:
Home ownership has been recognized by many academic researchers as the preferable tenure compared with renting. As extolled by many policy decision makers, the benefits of home owning against renting received substantial benefits which has tangible constructive profitable impacts such as capital appreciation and intangible benefits such as life contentment, social stability, security of tenure, raised self-esteem, sense of belongings, civic participation, improved physical health and better child outcomes. In fact, few studies havebeen conducted in a Chinese society whether these perceived benefits are also confessed by home owners or potential buyers. Given the strong empirical studies in Western countries, it gives particular interest to explore further and undertake research pertaining to social benefits of home ownership in Hong Kong to ascertain the benefits derived. In Hong Kong, home ownership was promoted by the government since the Long Term Housing Strategy in 1987. However, government had re-positioned its home ownership policy after the Asian Financial Crisisin 1997.Government clarified that the housing objectives would focus on provision of public rental housing to low income group and at the same time minimize its intervention in the private property market by maintaining adequate land supply to sustain an unprejudiced and steady operating atmosphere in the private property market. In fact, the housing policy was shifted from public-led to market-led approach. The Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands released a Statement on Housing Policy with nine measures were introduced to stablilize the housing market including suspension of production and sale of HOS flats indefinitely and sale of government land can only be applied through the application list. As such, people’s aspiration for home ownership was destructed due to shortage of housing supply and the aggregate demand for home ownership had pushed up the housing price which falls outside most people’s affordability. This paper attempts to explore if social implications of home ownership would have impact on one’s willingness to become home owner by comparison between two target groups of respondents including home owner and renter. The result of the survey and individual interview indicate that home ownership not only brings individual benefits to home owners or potential buyers such as personal fulfillment, wealth accumulation and life satisfaction but also generates societal benefits of maintaining stability, supportive to government and strengthening sense of belonging to the society. It is worthwhile and justified for the Hong Kong Government to accord top priority to materialize people’s desire for home ownership of its spillover individual and social benefits.

Abstract:
The current smart home communication can be viewed as protocol stacks interlocked by their proprietary capsule solutions, locking the consumer into a single market of devices, without integration from other manufacturers. This research heads out to discover frameworks to adapt the heterogenous proprietary communicative offerings within the smart home, to a shared communicative interoperable and centralized controlled home, to enable the end-user to adapt the most efficient device for each scenario without having to consider which wireless communicative protocol or having to install more proprietary solutions to adapt additional technologies, thus neglecting centralized control. The research is accomplished by conducting a structured literature review followed by an analysis through thematic coding which provided a broad spectrum of findings regarding different interoperable solutions within several layers of communicative interoperability, within IoT and the smart home. The research results cover frameworks and protocols towards accomplishing wireless interoperability discovered during the structured literature review process, these frameworks and protocols are presented in their respective characteristics, taking communication, interoperability, and smart home adaptation into consideration during analysis. The finalized results present solutions toward an interoperable wireless smart home with good adaptability, along with the main findings a clear redlining can be drawn towards interoperability within IoT, and it is Software Defined Networking (SDN), which revolves around software-based networking. The most applicable interoperable solutions according to the concluding results will provide experienced end-users, consumers, and researchers with a several layered mapping towards how applicable the corresponding solution is towards integrating wireless smart home communication in their smart home scenario.

Payne, Jill. "Re-creating home: British colonialism, culture and the Zuurveld environment in the nineteenth century." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002404.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis centres on the environmental impact of British colonialism in the Zuurveld during the nineteenth century. Within this context, it addresses the extent to which human-engineered environmental change is dictated by cultural mindset. Consideration of the links between culture and landscape transformation illuminates a little-considered aspect of the colonial experience in the Zuurveld. The British worldview at the turn of the eighteenth century is examined, with special reference to attitudes towards the environment. The changes which occurred in this attitude while the colonists adjusted to a foreign environment are traced. Precolonial societies manipulated the environment to a certain extent, but it was the British colonists who were to have the most profound effect on the ecosystem. The colonists impacted on the Zuurveld in a variety of ways. Much of the environmental change they induced resulted from their attempts to construct a familiar world from the alien landscape surrounding them. Attempts to "re-create home" in the Zuurveld were closely linked to the desire to exert control over what was to the colonists an "untamed wilderness." To this end land was cleared and new land use methods put into practice. Wildlife species threatening productivity were eliminated or forced through loss of habitat to retreat to the peripheries of the settlement. Exotic flora and fauna took the place of indigenes. The introduction of a capitalist economy meant that greater demands were made on the carrying capacity of the land. Conservation legislation introduced to limit increasing environmental degradation and protect commercial productivity simultaneously limited African access to the environment. Control of the land was closely linked to control of Africans: their labour was needed to facilitate the subjugation of the environment. Only through an appreciation of the British colonial mentality can changes to the Zuurveld environment during the nineteenth century be fully understood. Consequently, this study indicates that cultural mindset can play a pivotal role in shaping the environment.

Abstract:
AbstractThis section focuses on the community and spatial aspects of social exclusion. For this introduction, we define the community aspect of exclusion as the unintended reduction of participation in local life and spatial aspects of exclusion as the unintended reduction of mobility outside and inside of a person’s home. Fighting against social exclusion of older adults is a priority due to the negative effects of exclusion on older adults’ quality of life as well as on the equity and cohesion of an ageing society as a whole (adapted from Levitas et al. 2007 in Walsh et al. 2017, p. 83). Place, as a socio-spatial phenomenon, can shape older adults’ lives and their experiences of social exclusion. It encompasses dimensions such as social and relational aspects of place, amenities and build environment, place-based policy and experiential belonging. The purpose of this chapter is to briefly introduce some allied concepts related to older people’s relationship with their place and environment, and broadly illustrate the relevance of this relationship to old-age social exclusion. The chapter closes with a short introduction to each contribution within this section.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents the main areas of engagement of the state of Senegal with its diaspora. In the first part, it looks at the main institutions and policies geared towards the diaspora. In the second part, the chapter focuses specifically on diaspora policies in the area of social protection (unemployment, health care, family benefits, pensions, guaranteed minimum resources). If Senegal falls in the category of pioneer countries for some aspects of emigration policies (ministerial institutions, external voting, political representation), its policy for the diaspora in the field of social protection is rather scanty. As a developing country facing many structural economic issues, scaling up social protection in the homeland remains the top priority for the Government, relegating social protection for the diaspora as a secondary policy concern for now. Recent governmental policies towards the diaspora have focused primarily on tapping the resources of the diaspora in order to increase its contribution to economic development and facilitate productive investment by Senegalese abroad in their home country.

AbstractIn this chapter, the authors discuss artifacts in which children explore belonging and home. The chapter defines the sense of belonging as a core feature of humanity and living together. The feeling of having a home and being at home is both an intimate and a socially shared aspect of belonging. The children expressed belonging to a wide range of spaces in their artifacts. This spatial span extends from macro to micro scale and indicates belonging based on spaces, social relations, and materiality. Even very young children can see and depict their belonging as multiple and including spatial and social dimensions. The analyzed artifacts reveal both concrete and symbolic approaches to belonging and home.

Abstract:
Our workshop envisions what we call “robotic home” and how smart home technology could be used as a tool for increasing mental health. “Robotic home” is an integrated system of smart home and robotic technologies that is proactive and interactive with the inhabitant. We focus on the possibility of such technology to be used for enhancing mental health. This could be achieved both through therapeutic functions and by assisting in the aspects of regular life that the inhabitant may have difficulties with because of their condition. Technology like this could make the very home effectively a behavioral therapist. Furthermore, we explore what kind of ethical risks are involved, and how to minimize the risks.

Abstract:
This paper introduces the idea of a robotic home and discusses some ethical aspects of the design for it. “Robotic home” is a version of smart home where the AI systems and the physical devices they control form a functionally integrated whole that is active towards the inhabitant(s). While a smart home has AI applications mainly as tools for convenience, a robotic home is a cluster of both embodied (robotic) and disembodied AI systems that interact with the inhabitant(s) of the home. The context for the discussion is an environment that is designed to assist a person who requires active assistance for everyday life (for instance, for mental health reasons, disability, or old age), and the home itself takes over some functions that enable the everyday life in a desired way. A living environment such as this should be a coherent, functional whole where the different parts of the design serve the specific needs of the inhabitant, as well as moral values such as dignity and autonomy. Aimee Van Wynsberghe’s care centred value-sensitive design model of care robotics is discussed as a starting point for developing a practical ethical framework for designing this environment, including the analysis of personalized needs for assistance, (physical and non-physical) tasks that the robotic home is responsible of, and ethical considerations.

Abstract:
Sustainability is an updated research topic. In Computer Science, researchers especially from Human-Computer Interaction and Software Engineering areas have started to focus on how to design and build more sustainable technologies and mainly how to build technologies that could help us to live in a more sustainable way. In this last sense, several solutions have been studied and developed to be used at home. The concept of sustainable houses is growing and generally relies on technological solutions which we should interact with. However, how human-centered aspects have been considered in these works? Which aspects of sustainability have been addressed? In this work, we present a critical view on the works found in literature and also a discussion about the research gap considering the design and evaluation methodologies for such technology.

Abstract:
This paper outlines an idea of creatively incentivizing home-owners to conserve electricity through a socially competitive lottery-based rewards system. The core idea of this work is in leveraging the power of social network influence to make consumers participate and compete in a lottery so that the resulting engagement consistently enhances the population’s energy spending awareness. The potential value of such a system in generating energy and monetary savings/revenue is investigated via simulation of social influence processes in an agent based simulation framework. The study encompasses three analysis cases: a lottery system with no communication between consumers, a system with the added social influence, and a “fall-back” scenario where people may return to their old habits of not conserving electricity while still communicating among themselves. To model these analysis cases, a standard independent cascade model is employed with influence success thresholds varied between 1% and 10%. The paper concludes by summarizing the simulation results. Pertinent aspects such as generation of lottery prize money, and expected impact on energy savings is also discussed.

Abstract:
Corporate social responsibility is one of the activities that goes beyond philanthropy, based on volunteerism in line with the responsibilities of enterprises towards society. This concept, which offers businesses the opportunity to look after and develop their brand image in the eyes of society, has become a necessity, not a choice, especially in today's world. In order to meet social expectations, the effectiveness of static and dynamic advertising messages implemented in all social benefit-based studies for human development such as environment, health and education is very important in terms of ensuring audience communication. In the second half of 2019, people were confined to homes and life came to a standstill all over the world in order to reduce and prevent the impact of the pandemic within the scope of the “New Type Corona Virus” (COVID-19) measures, which are from the sars-cov-2 coronavirus family, which is spreading rapidly globally starting from Wohan, Hubei Province, China. As a basic protection module for humanity against corona virus, it has incorporated the concept of social distancing into their lives in order to reduce the contact of staying at home and increasing hygiene, except in mandatory situations. During this extraordinary period, many brands on a global scale have included the concept of “social distance” in their advertising messages with the awareness of corporate social responsibility and have started to inform and educate the community about this issue by emphasizing the importance of the process. Within the scope of this research, advertising designs prepared by brands acting with corporate social responsibility awareness through the concept of social distancing during the Pandemic period were discussed and how the meaning structures behind the messages were created and transmitted. The research is limited to 3 (three) advertising designs determined by the 'judicial sampling' method (selective method). In the sample of the study, advertising narratives of brands in different sectors were explained in general framework and similar and different aspects of messages were uncovered by performing comparative analysis between messages in line with the findings obtained from the narratives. In this context, it was determined that the contrasts of “pessimism and optimism, hope and despair, happiness and unhappiness, death and life, strong and powerless, youth and old age, unity/togetherness and separation, struggle and defeat, nature and culture” were constructed as the main discourse.

Abstract:
Health begins at home and in community where people live and work, in fact, the World Health Organisation (WHO) defines health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being’. Experts and professionals, of all sectors and specialities, need to take account the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in all aspects of their working lives. Mainstreaming OSH into education concerns integrating one policy area – OSH – into another – education. This study started from a first analysis of an international and national OSH training offer, in which some critical aspects emerged: there are mostly sectoral training courses, qualifying some prevention actor roles, most linked to traditional risks, and primarily focused on the safety aspects rather than the health ones. The current study is related to an innovative format and experience for an integrated management of OSH in the evolution of the world of work. The concept was born from the need to train new professionals figures when the rapid demographic changes and technological innovation are changing the working world and therefore also the required skills to prevention actors. A first test has been conducted on 26 students who attended the first edition of this innovative training.

Abstract:
Benidorm, in alicantina coast, Spain, and Camboriú in southern Brazil, are cities where the sun and beach tourism has developed with urban model. They have similarities landscape and functional by their skylines and by present tourist and second home accommodations. Seeking understand the two cities comparatively, we analyzed their relations with the territory and the environment, following the urban evolution of each one, relating them to the social-economic processes, cultural and institutional aspects that led and guided their development. In a morphological approach, the urban tissue was analyzed, especially the first fringes along the coast, compared to some visible aspects of the urban fabric that are related to the ambience and quality of life in these settlements. It was noticed that the urban fabric of each city, had distinct territorial ordering processes that are reflected in urban environments also different qualities.

Abstract:
Romania is going through a period of economic transition, subject to the pressures of globalization that affect the evolution of the family, at the micro social level, structurally, from the behaviour and relational point of view. The continuous process of changes in the labour market, the inefficiency of the association between vocational training and job satisfaction, the financial difficulties felt by most families but also the challenge of modernity have emphasized the phenomenon of migration in the last decade. The departure of parents who have to work abroad has become a worrying phenomenon with a higher incidence in the eastern half of the country. It has got complex effects on the evolution of the family, especially on the children left at home with one of their parents or their tutors. Nowadays, the studies show more and more situations of neglect in which children become victims and suffer emotionally and physically. They also suffer various abuses, they are exploited through work or sex. In schools, there is a new profile of special educational requirements (not deficiencies), the profile of children left at home without parental support. It is worrying the migration phenomenon seen as a value model by the young generation and its negative effects at school level: decrease of motivation for learning or school abandonment. The present study discusses a review of the current scientific literature objectively, which examines the impact of breaking attachment relationships between children and parents on socio-emotional development and school outcomes. The Romanian society knows an important socio-economic phenomenon, which has grown since 1990: migration. In 2017, a study carried out at the request of the Romanian Government recorded more than 85,000 children left home alone with one of the parents or without parental supervision. We aim to analyse what effects at school and socio-emotional level have the loss of attachment ties having as moderators the gender of the migrant parent, the duration of the separation, the age at which the separation occurs. When these relationships are interrupted, the child’s emotional development is affected, his emotional balance having repercussions in his social life. The purpose of this study is to identify, monitor the dimensions of the phenomenon in intensely affected areas (Braila and Galati counties), the psycho-pedagogical aspects of children with migrant parents exposed to situations of vulnerability, marginalization and to propose a program of educational strategies in order to optimize school motivation. The main objective of the research is to identify, evaluate and involve them into adaptive actions that have as their objective the rebalancing of the socio-affective relations

Full text
Abstract:
Population aging is a global phenomenon that has presented capacity and resource challenges for providing supportive care environments for older people in later life (Bone et al., 2018, Finucane et al., 2019). Aging-in-place was introduced as a policy driver for creating supportive environmental and social care to enable individuals to live independently at home and in the community for as long as possible. Recently, there has been a move towards offering care for people with a terminal illness at home and in the community (Shepperd et al., 2016); and when appropriate, to die in supportive, home-like environments such as care homes (Wada et al., 2020). Aging-in-place principles can, thus and, should be extended to enabling supportive, home-like environments at the end-of-life. Yet, first, we must consider the appropriateness, availability and diversity of options for community-based palliative and end-of-life care (PEoLC), in order to optimise supports for older people who are dying at home or within long-term/residential care environments. Globally, across places with similar health and social care systems and service models such as in Scotland and in Canada, community-based PEoLC options are currently not uniformly available. Given that people entering into long-term/residential care homes are increasingly closer to the end of life, there is now an even greater demand for PEoLC provision in residential facilities (Kinley et al., 2017). Although most reported deaths occur within an inpatient hospital setting (50%), the proportion of overall deaths in a care home setting is projected to increase from 18% to 22.5% (Finucane et al, 2019). This suggests that long-term/residential care homes are to become the most common place of death by 2040, evidencing the need to develop and sustain appropriate and compassionate PEoLC to support those who are able to die at home and those living in residential care facilities (Bone et al., 2018; Finucane et al., 2019). This research initiative is premised on the notion that aging in place matters throughout the life-course, including at the end-of-life and that the socio-environmental aspects of care homes need to enable this.

Meadows, Michael. Thesis Review: The Role of SANZ, a Migrant Radio Programme, in Making Sense of Place for South African Migrants in New Zealand. Unitec ePress, November 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.34074/thes.revw22016.

Abstract:
This study is a detailed, qualitative exploration of the role played by a South African migrant radio programme, SANZ Live, in supporting its audience to create a sense of place in Auckland, New Zealand, through a range of on- and off-air activities. The thesis concludes that SANZ Live contributes to the creation of opportunities for South African migrants to find a sense of place through producing media content, participating in face-to-face communication through the off-air activities of SANZ Live, participating in SANZ Live social media and perpetuating aspects of South African culture through various programme-related activities. This multi-layered participation works to establish a new routine and a hybrid culture that enables South African migrants to establish new individual, group, and collective identities – becoming ‘South African Kiwis’ – in their new home of choice. In her exploration of this important topic, the author has used a wide range of relevant academic and industry sources to outline the role of Auckland community radio, and the station SANZ in particular, in creating a new hybrid sense of identity for the city’s South African community. It builds on earlier work elsewhere that has explored similar topics (Downing, 2001, 2003; Downing & Husband, 2005; Forde et al, 2009). But importantly, the study has revealed the critical role of being played by the radio programme in smoothing South African immigrants’ transition into New Zealand society – an important dimension of the settlement process.
