Demirbilek, Mustafa. "Dynamically accepting and scheduling patients for home healthcare." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2018. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/110628/.

Full text
Abstract:
Importance of home healthcare is growing rapidly since populations of developed and even developing countries are getting older quickly and the number of hospitals, retirement homes, and medical staff do not increase at the same rate. We present Scenario Based Approach (SBA) for the Home Healthcare Nurse Scheduling Problem. In this problem, arrivals of patients are dynamic and acceptance and appointment time decisions have to be made as soon as patients arrive. The primary objective is to maximise the average number of daily visits. For the sake of service continuity, patients have to be visited at the same days and times each week during their service horizon. SBA is basically a simulation procedure based on generating several scenarios and scheduling new customers with a simple but fast heuristic. Then results are analysed to decide whether to accept the new patient and at which appointment day/time. First, two different versions of SBA, Daily and Weekly SBA are developed and analysed for a single nurse. We compare Daily SBA to two greedy heuristics from the literature, distance and capacity based, and computational studies show that Daily SBA makes significant improvements compared to these other two methods for a single nurse. Next, we extend SBA for a multi-nurse case. SBA is compared to a greedy heuristic under different conditions such as same depot case where nurses start their visits from and return to same place, clustered service area, and nurses with different qualification level. SBA gives superior results under all experiment conditions compared to the greedy heuristic.

Guros, Frankie. "Thinking About Work at Home: Implications for Safety at Work." PDXScholar, 2015. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/2624.

Full text
Abstract:
Safety at work is of the utmost importance to employees and the organizations they work for, and as such, it is a central issue for occupational health psychology. Although dramatic decreases in the number of worker injuries and fatalities have been observed over the last several decades, safety remains a principal concern for organizations. This is especially true in occupations in which employees face serious threats to their personal safety, such as correctional officers (COs). While a number of studies have identified workplace factors that contribute to worker safety, few have attempted to draw a link between employee nonwork experiences and safety at work. In the current study, a model was tested to examine whether the relationship between cognitive nonwork recovery experiences and safety performance at work was mediated by safety motivation. Specifically, the effort-recovery model (Meijman & Mulder, 1998) and the concept of self-regulatory resources (Muraven & Baumeister, 2000) were utilized to test these relationships. It was hypothesized that psychological detachment during nonwork time can replenish cognitive resources that employees need in order to feel motivated to be focused on safety in the workplace, and negative work reflection can drain these resources. Furthermore, drawing on Broaden-and-Build theory (Fredrickson, 1998) it was posited that positive work reflection during nonwork time would have a positive relationship with safety motivation. Additionally, it was hypothesized that the relationship between these cognitive recovery experiences and safety motivation would be moderated by individual perceptions of safety climate. The hypotheses were examined in a sample of COs (N = 166) from two correctional facilities in Oregon. The results overall did not provide strong empirical support for the model. No support was found for the role of psychological detachment or negative work reflection. Additionally, perceptions of safety climate did not moderate the relationship between cognitive recovery experiences and safety. However, positive work reflection during nonwork time was significantly associated with safety participation motivation, which in turn had a positive association with safety participation. Additionally analyses revealed that this relationship was reciprocal in nature when utilizing an additional sample four months after data collection, such that safety participation motivation and safety participation predicted positive work reflection. The findings from the current study build on the research between the work-life interface and safety at work, suggesting that positive nonwork experiences can potentially be related to discretional safety performance at work. Implications for practical applications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Eihab, Abdelghaffar Elsharkawy Heba. "Home energy use, lifestyle, and behaviour : a community energy saving programme (CESP) survey in Aspley, Nottingham." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2013. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/28034/.

Full text
Abstract:
With increasing concern over national green house gas (GHG) emissions, combined with the widespread economic impact of global commodities such as coal, natural gas and oil and their effect on energy prices, improving household energy efficiency can be seen as a key vehicle against which both energy emissions can be reduced and domestic GHG emissions curtailed. It is argued that factors that form the basis of choices, habits and values of individuals dictate an individual's decision to either adopt environmentally sustainable behaviour or not. This research reflects on how this specific area of energy policy is being enacted through policy and regulation, notably through one of the Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP) schemes, rolled out by the UK government in 2009. Although Government can play a pivotal role helping people foster more sustainable behaviour, it must do so in a manner that engages individuals and the public at large. As such, the aim is to adopt a more long term outlook towards encouraging sustainable energy use. The research reflects therefore on the results of a two-phase survey questionnaire administered to the residents of a CESP scheme in Aspley, Nottingham. The questionnaire sought to identify how tenants of energy-inefficient homes tend to behave with respect to domestic energy consumption and how their dwellings performed. This was augmented by quantitative data comprising utility bill figures gathered from the homes under investigation. This study adopts a mixed method strategy where the researcher combines both quantitative and qualitative data in order to provide comprehensive analysis of the research problem. In this research, 'before-and-after design' survey design is set up to explore the associations between variables under study. The field work survey was performed in one of the pilot CESP schemes currently under delivery in the Aspley area of Nottingham. Designed and executed in two survey phases, the first phase sought to understand residents' attitudes and behaviour and explore how this related to home energy use and performance prior to extensive energy-related upgrades to their dwellings. The second survey phase sought to examine changes - if any - in users' energy consumption behaviour and dwelling performance after their homes were upgraded to higher energy efficiency standards. This second phase also explored the possible reasons for any behavioural change depicted; whether it was due to policy uptake, information provided or means of communicating energy saving advice. The Aspley area in Nottingham is identified as one of the most deprived areas in Nottingham, besides the number of inefficient solid wall houses that are 'hard to heat'. Thus, assessing the effectiveness of policy interventions requires a clear understanding of consumer behaviour and motivations across all income groups so that the most appropriate approaches are developed. As such, it is possible that government aspirations to reduce energy consumption will go unheeded if they are inconsistent with the social and physical context of real life. Financial costs, past behaviour, social values and physical infrastructure are considered some of the most difficult barriers to changing energy behaviours. Policies need not only inform people about technological improvements that can be installed in their homes, but should also strongly encourage and incentivise them to use them efficiently. The users' energy consumption behaviour and the policy interventions will make the difference between promising policy, and policy which in fact delivers on its aims for energy efficiency and sustainability.

Beauregard, Alexandra. "Interference between work and home : an empirical study of the antecedents, outcomes, and coping strategies amongst public sector employees." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2004. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/354/.

Full text
Abstract:
Work-home interference has been receiving increasing attention in the organizational behaviour literature. It is defined as a form of inter-role conflic t in which the demands of the work role and the demands of the home role are mutually incompatible. Existing research on work interference with home/home interference with work has focused on situational antecedents and attitudinal outcomes, with limited attention paid to gender- and disposition-based predictors, behavioural outcomes, and coping strategies associated with interference. Using a quantitative methodology, this thesis drew upon two separate samples of UK public sector employees, comprising 208 and 226 respondents respectively, to pursue three aims: 1) to examine the roles of gender and of personality in contributing to interference, as well as the potential for characteristics associated with one domain (e.g., home) to influence the degree of interference generated by the opposing domain (e.g., work); 2) to investigate the link between interference and extra-role work behaviours such as organizatio na l citizenship and workplace deviance; and 3) to extend existing knowledge of coping strategies for dealing with work-home interference. Findings indicated that gender moderated the effects of both home- and work-related characteristics on home interference with work, and that dispositional variables were capable of predicting work-home interference above and beyond the effects of situational characteristics. With regard to behavioural outcomes, work-home interference predicted increased workplace deviance amongst employees. Work interference with home was associated with greater employee participation in organizational citizenship behaviours, while the opposite was true for home interference with work. In terms of coping with interference, cognitive reappraisal was identified as the most effective strategy, and gender was found to moderate the effect of certain coping strategies on interference. Contributions of the thesis, major research and practical implications, and future research directions are discussed.

Patah, Mohd Onn Rashdi Abd. "Developing a career in the Malaysian hotel industry : a narrative analysis of the career experiences of local middle managers." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2017. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/104249/.

Full text
Abstract:
The career pathways and aspirations of the next generation of hotel managers have not been previously documented or studied thoroughly, primarily because the majority of available studies have focused on the success stories of current hotel general managers. Many career-related studies have highlighted the importance of career development, and the purpose of this study was to address this gap in the research in the hotel industry by exploring the career pathways of middle managers through the understanding of their educational and training background, career experiences, factors that contribute and opportunities available for them. A qualitative study, using interviews and narrative analysis, was conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with 14 current hotel middle managers (the heads of hotel departments), 11 former middle managers and three hotel general managers. Participants were contacted via the professional social media platform, LinkedIn. Using Career Construction Theory (Savickas (2005)) and its three components of vocational personality, life theme and career adaptability as the meta-theory, this research examined the career experiences of participants to understand middle managers’ career pathways and aspirations from their own career stories or narratives. Each interview was recorded and transcribed and the responses were then coded by using the Atlas.tiTM software. The findings were used to discuss and address the research questions set for this research. The results were also linked to the managers’ career development opportunity structures, which may have influenced their decision to stay, progress or leave the industry. Several contributions were highlighted which include the importance of education and training, the personal narratives of each manager on their work experiences, the varied extent of the available opportunities, and the skills development of the middle managers in this research. Overall, it can be concluded that the middle managers’ career aspirations were individually constructed, contextualised by the opportunities available to them, continuous learning experiences, skills development, changes in their life stages, support that they received and the extent to which they were successful in adapting the challenges involved in their career transitions.

Vanova, Lucie. "Reconstructing creative work due to COVID-19 : Exploring the impact of COVID-19 and the role of media for creatives newly working from home."

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the impact of the situation imposed by the spread of COVID-19 on people working in creative industries and their creative processes, and analyse the role of media in reconstructing their work and leisure spaces at home. The research topics include handling of this change by the creatives, the role of media in reconstructing creatives' homes and the impact of this situation on their creativity. The methodology for gathering data is centred around interviews with the representatives of the group of people working in the creative industries. The empirical data is analysed with the help of the theoretical framework. Among the theories, the six most important topics are: Connectivity versus connectedness, Front region and back region, Boundary theory, Transformations between regions, Reasons to disconnect from media, and Influences on creativity. On one hand, the conclusion of this thesis is that creatives were handling the change of their work environment mostly well, possibly, perhaps creativity is usually influenced by internal factors, and as such the changed work environment as an external factor doesn't influence it as much as the social isolation situation due to COVID-19 as a whole. On the other hand, for many creatives the changed work environment provided calmer conditions for work and offered more time for leisure, although the majority of the participants were working more in this new situation than before. Due to the fact that all of the interviewees had to use their digital technologies and internet in order to work, the escape to the offline world often served as a place for relaxation. Moreover, the majority of the interviewees' devices was used for multi-functional purposes, for both work and for relax. Ultimately the impact on the creatives and their work was studied from different perspectives, offering a snapshot of creative work in extraordinary times.

Boe, Olivia, and Delwér Anton. "Is working from home working, for the leaders in the creative industry? : - A case study exploring the influence of remote working on leadership productivity in the creative industries, due to Covid 19." Thesis, Jönköping University, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-51284.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: With the emerge of increased digitalization and remote working due to the current pandemic Covid 19, leaders are challenged to adapt to the situation by leading virtually and changing normal work practices and processes. To maintain and follow the social guidelines made by the WHO, several companies have implemented remote working as a strategy that may affect the ability to be a productive leader.  Purpose: The purpose of this study is therefore to explore the influence remote working has had on leadership productivity due to Covid 19, and how this may hinder or benefit organizations in the creative industries.  Method: This research is an exploratory qualitative study conducted, focusing on one single organization where semi-structured, and in-depth interviews were held with eight participants who were all leaders in different forms. A thematic analysis was used to investigate the primary data.  Conclusion: The empirical findings suggest three main areas that explain the influence of re- mote working on leadership productivity: 1) Remote working in the creative industries are seen as having an overall successful impact on leadership productivity. 2) Leadership productivity is highly dependent on personal preferences and individual qualities. 3) A new type of business model is arising.

Abstract:
The rapid development of electronic components has resulted in the emergence of newmobile applications targeted at industry and hospital sectors. Moreover, a lack of availablewireless frequencies as result of the growth of wireless systems is becoming a problem. In this thesis we characterize industrial and hospital environments in order to provide theknowledge necessary to asses present and future development of critical wireless applications.Furthermore, we investigate the possibility of using TV white space by analysingthe interference from secondary to primary user in home environments. Some of the wireless solutions used in industries and hospitals come directly fromsystems designed for home or office, such asWLAN and Bluetooth. These systems are notprepared to handle problems associated with interference of impulsive character found inindustrial processes and electrical systems. Typically, industrial environments have been classified as reflective environments dueto the metallic structure present in the buildings. In this thesis, we demonstrate that althoughthis may be generally true, some locations in the industry may have special propertieswith wave propagation characteristics in the opposite direction. Stored materials canabsorb wireless signals, resulting in a coverage problem. From the measurement campaignwe are able to distinguish three main classes of indoor environments (highly reflective, medium reflective and low reflective) with different propagation characteristics. Improving spectrum efficiency can be a solution to the growing demand for wirelessservices and can increase a system’s robustness against interference, particularly in criticalapplications in industrial and hospital environments. One improvement in spectrum efficiencycan be for secondary consumers to reuse unassigned portions of the TV spectrum ata specific time and geographical location. This thesis studies the effect of inserting whitespace devices in the TV broadcast spectrum. Note that any new model must state the maximumpower allocated to secondary users to avoid harmful interference with the primarysignal. The content of this thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is the most comprehensiveand addresses electromagnetic interference and multipath characterization ofindustrial environments. In this part, we have developed a method for channel characterizationfor complex electromagnetic environments and have produced results from differentindustrial environments. The second part presents a preliminary study that characterizesthe electromagnetic interference in a hospital environment. The third part is a study ofsecondary users reusing the TV white spaces.

Over the past few decades, the industrialization of food has become increasingly influenced by the consolidation of its controlling corporations. This consolidation has isolated meat processing facilities from small farmers, favoring corporations who have built enormous processing facilities to match their demand. Given that the consumption of beef has leveled out in the past few decades, the environmental costs of producing enough beef to meet demand continue to rise. Factory farming transforms huge tracts of land into wastelands of polluted land, and cultivates animals in unsanitary conditions. The centralization of major farming, packing, and processing facilities has left more distant, more environmentally conscious farmers to struggle with the economics of profit margins. This thesis proposes is a new model of industrial facility that can transition with changes in the industry as it moves towards a coop model from an industrial model. Its urban location pits private and public against each other in conditions that force them to negotiate a truce.

Abstract:
With automation, every aspect of office work becomes streamlined, on-line, and universally accessible. This eliminates the need for a hierarchical work structure, and for spatially and temporally bounded offices. When traditional cultural constructs are abandoned through telecommunication and electronic technologies, both home and work need to be redefined. Because the workplace is being transplanted into the home, workers must establish boundaries between these two worlds to substitute for the loss of office social interaction and to balance professional and personal life. Social and architectural theories, statistics and case studies, have alternately made both dire and optimistic predictions about the repercussions of telecommuting. This thesis tests these predictions through case studies which examine how actual people are coping with this new way of working and living. It uses the resulting information to focus on the ways that home design is affected by these phenomena.

The housing supply is affected by the market, regulation, land use, and capital. Research has revealed a strong variation between the supply sector and builders' behavior patterns. Understanding these variations will contribute not only to better performance of private homebuilders, but also to more efficient housing supply policy. Somerville's impressive research, 'The industrial organization of housing supply (1999)' integrates systematic factors into home builders' organizational structure. In adapting his research model, I explain builders' size distribution in markets defined by Metro Statistical Area (MSA). I divided market factors into size, demand and cost factors, and housing values. The impact of the regulatory environment is refined by separately testing the formal restriction, community discretion and control, and jurisdiction structures' effects. Land issues are measured by amount of developable area and needs of assembly for proper size of development. The results show that the firm size responds to price changes most sensitively. The effect of market size shows that large area gives more growth opportunities to firms. The amount of developable land shows higher impact on firm size than increased demand does. Density restriction and approval delay tends to increase builder size.

Abstract:

The role of the manufacturing units has a big impact on a company’s business. If competitive priorities and the production weapons can be merged together and describe a factory profile, it can be a factor that provides the competitive advantages for the company. This thesis has two objectives in this area, the industrial and the academic.

The industrial objective will investigate how we can visualize and describe a manufacturing structure and make the desired positioning. The manufacturing footprint structure will be set up according to the performance objectives Innovation, Flexibility, Lead-time and Efficiency representing the product life cycle that also support decisions for the make or buy process. The result is a model that describes the manufacturing structure and a conflict area, or a “Black Hole”, is indentified and is leading to the academic research questions; why most of the manufacturing units are positioned in the conflict area and how to leave the “Black Hole”? The intersection in the views of positioning, knowledge and the network paradox are analysed and a scaled model connected to Dreyfus knowledge model, brings some understanding to the positioning problem.

A process model is proposed for the characteristic profiles of the concept factories and how to move to the desired positions. This concept can be applied on a group of manufacturing units and handle the trade off dilemmas for the separate units by letting a group of units achieve top performance for all the performance objectives. The visualization and relation to the products life cycle can contribute to communication and developing the manufacturing footprint strategy. The model has been tested, in a positioning context for strategic purchasing with experience of supplier quality audits for positioning suppliers, with positive result.

Further research of top performance factories would be interesting to do in order to find out their 8M profiles and identify more trade off dilemmas, connecting them to the different performance objectives in order to support the development in moving to different desired directions.

Schnurr, Noelia-Sarah. "From hope to betrayal : emotional antenarratives during mergers and acquisitions." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/49794/.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I study the construction of a merger and acquisition (M & A) process through emotional antenarratives. This builds on recent research in the M & A field, which has called for a more thorough understanding of emotions during M & A processes. After reviewing current literature on emotions as well as emotions in M & A processes I point to a gap in understanding how emotional experiences, as present in the organisation, shape the M & A process over time. I suggest that a narrative perspective is particularly well suited to study emotional experiences present in the organisation since organisations have often been conceptualised as storytelling systems. Narratives, which refer to accounts of experiences, give insights into emotions and construct M & A processes by shedding light on the sensemaking processes reflected in the narratives that are told. I consider several different approaches to narrative study, concluding that an antenarrative approach, which focuses on the fragmented narratives before narrative closure is achieved, is particularly well suited to studying storytelling during M & A, since storytelling during M & A is often fragmented and rarely coherent and since antenarratives give rich insights that are often lost in full narratives. I further point out that whilst recent work has started to appreciate the importance of antenarratives during M & A processes, no work has looked at the emotional dimension of antenarratives. In order to fill both of these gaps, I study emotional antenarratives over time during M & A, conceptualising emotional antenarratives as accounts of experiences with an emotional dimension. In a longitudinal empirical study of a company undergoing a merger I examine the way in which these emotional antenarratives construct the M & A process over time from hope and promise through to critique to nightmare towards betrayal. I do this by studying the characteristics of the emotional antenarratives. I suggest that this progression is due to employees making sense of the merger as breach of a psychological contract into which they have emotionally invested and committed to. My findings allow me to contribute to literature on M & A as well as M & A and emotions by showing how emotional experiences present in the organisation shape and construct the M & A process. I further contribute to literature on M & A and storytelling by showing the role the emotional dimension plays in evolving M & A processes. I finally contribute to work on psychological contract theory and work on emotional investment by showing their role in the M & A process.

Abstract:
The Industrial Schools Act introduced State coercion into the ‘childcare’ of the colony, and industrial schools became legal enforcers for other welfare institutions. This thesis provides an account of two industrial schools in nineteenth and early twentieth century New South Wales, focusing on the children and the lives they lived within the institutions and relying heavily upon primary sources. NSS Vernon enrolled destitute, neglected and delinquent boys. The curriculum, combined with an elaborate system of rewards, proved effective as reformative agents and after 1911 the ship’s coercive function was taken over by other reformatory schools and by a system of probation. About one third of girls admitted to ISG Newcastle were older, sexually delinquent girls. Inappropriate site, inadequate preparation, insufficient and untrained staff, lack of suitable curriculum and denial of support from the Colonial Secretary led to total failure of the school. Physical and verbal abuse was in evidence at Newcastle and resurfaced after the change of enrollments to mostly older girls about the time of the school’s transfer to Parramatta in 1887. After 1905 committals were aimed at maintaining street order and parental authority, to house the ‘uncontrollables’ and ‘incompetents’ and to provide a lock hospital for the control of venereal disease. The expressed purpose of the school to provide ‘good useful women’ dovetailed neatly with the introduction of probation, mostly for boys, which was enforced ‘through the mother’

Abstract:
There has been significant increase in the occurrence of earthquakes and other disasters around the world recently. With record-breaking storms and natural disasters destroying different parts of the world, many people have to deal with the repercussions of the aftermaths; and homelessness is one of the facts of such incidence. This master thesis is aimed at creating living solution for the victims of earthquakes and other kind of disasters; natural or human-made (war), providing accommodation for homeless people after an earthquake or a housing alternative for refugees. The design of the collapsible home is basically a new concept of emergency hut for accommodating people in emergency after the event of disaster with easy assembling and quick installation feature. Considering the situation of homeless people after catastrophic disasters who need to be accommodated, the design and creation of a quick, accommodating and low-cost emergency hut is advantageous.  This project also provides a living service for both refugees and homeless people. It is low cost, modular, and easy to use. More than that it is feasible and it makes it possible to accommodate people for a longer period of time, rather than a very short temporary housing solution such as tents.

This research proposal is based on the premise that the design of the human interface component of industrial sytems has a strong impact on the human error. This work proposes a process to help conceive strategies to prevent the huma error during the operation of automated systems, based upon concepts extracted from the Method for the Conception of Ergonomic Human Interface (MCIE). This process is built on the error classification according to Rasmussen's task execution cognitive model and results in the proposal of strategies to prevent the error in the specific domain of electrical systems substation operation. This context of study follows a research thread already pursued by previous works in the group. The process must incorportae the method MCIE when designing human interfaces for the specific work context, making it more suitable to support the conception of interfaces for industrial automated systems. This text presents the process, the simulated environment used during the validation of the strategies, and the results of the validation process which was done with the participation of the operators of a real electric system substation

Abstract:
In this thesis, we were interested in the control of industrial manipulators in co-manipulation mode with a human operator for the handling of heavy loads. First, we have presented an overview of existing studies in this framework. Then, we have addressed the modeling and the identification of dynamic parameters for the Denso VP-6242G robot. We have used the OpenSYMORO software to calculate its dynamical model. After a detailed presentation of the method for identifying the robot's parameters, we have applied it to the case of our robot. This allowed us to obtain a vector of the parameters which guarantees a positive definite inertia matrix for any configuration of the robot, as well as a good quality of reconstruction of the torques in the case of constant joint velocities or in the case of variable ones over time. To continue, we have detailed the new features that have been proposed for the online trajectory generator, for which the control scheme is based on. We have presented a method for estimating the operator's force from the measurements of the interaction force between the robot and the operator, while taking into account for the penalization of the operator's force in order to have an information of this last which allows to generate a trajectory that respects the limits of workspace. Some tests of the trajectory generator simulating different possible scenarios have allowed us to check the effectiveness of the new proposed features. The generator makes it possible to produce a trajectory in the three-dimensional workspace according to the direction of the force applied by the operator, which contributes to fulfill the requirement of transparency that is sought in a co-manipulation. In the last part, we have presented and validated, in simulation, an impedance control whose reference trajectories are delivered by the proposed generator. The obtained results have shown a good trajectory tracking. On the other hand, the satisfaction of the virtual bounds of the workspace has also been nicely taken into account. However, the corresponding articular trajectories can cross the bounds defined to preserve the integrity of the robot

Abstract:
This study is based on fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork that I conducted in Bor, a copper-processing town in Eastern Serbia. From the perspectives of “ordinary” people, this dissertation explores the process of post-socialist transformation through ethnography of the interconnections between the town (characterised by mono-structural economy) and the industrial company. After a prosperous period during Yugoslav socialism there was an economic, social, and symbolic decline of the copper-processing company followed by decay of the town and industry during the 1990s. This thesis captures the moment of political promise that brought a new horizon of hope for a better life and the promise of economic growth through the revival of the rundown industry. It captures the experiences of people who have had different encounters with existing attempts to revitalise and transform everyday life, in the context of the mutual revival of the company and the town. In this thesis I analyse people’s anticipations of their futures as well as the practices they invested in maintaining and realising their hopes (which I call the “work of hope”). I argue that ambivalence, which consisted of simultaneous coupling of hope with various other competing and conflicting sets of dispositions, such as risk, despair, entrapment, dismay, anxiety, frustration, and so on, was reflected in how people’s futures were imagined, conveyed, and lived towards. The first part of the dissertation focuses on how material objects, such as the renovated sites, the district heating, and pollution, appeared in my interlocutors’ work of hope and in their anticipations of futures. In parallel with this, the second part focuses on how the temporality of waiting and the work of hope played out in relation to gender, age, and generation among the people with whom I spent time. I argue that my interlocutors’ anticipations of futures and their work of hope resulted in reproduction of inequalities (in terms of gender, age, and class). I argue that in their encounter with the omnipresent industrial company that pervaded and constructed everyday lives, and through their work of hope, the state was encountered and reproduced and the social contract between the company, the town and the people was maintained. The analysis of how people in the industrial town of Bor played with and sought to reconcile ambivalence feeds into existing debates about how hope is read through, produced through, and articulated in relation to the material and social landscapes.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyse and reflect about the capitalist industrialization during the Industrial Revolution, which first takes place in England, between 1785-1848, intending to understand its implication in nowadays Information Revolution and its high technologies. This late revolution is only in the beginning, and accelerates the transformations of bodies and society. First, the historical facts of the industrialization and the catastrophic human results are related - such as the de-territorialization of peasants and countrymen and the proletarianization of these populations, the new labour power. The new 'middle class¿, looked for productivity, seeking for progress and profit and was enchanted by development. Meanwhile, the bodies that were responsible for the hard work were treated as energy recipients, such as machines, capable of being dominated and disciplinated. The metaphor of the Human-Motor, in Rabinbach, describes the bodies as productive machines. A rationalist and utilitarian new science provided the transformations in labour power. The body was than conceived as a productive force and also as a political instrument. Its energies could be, subjected by new techniques, structured in organizational systems, scientifically drawn. New studies in ergonomics, physical education and physiology sustained the 'process of docility of the body¿, including new discourses, in a mechanicist language. Actualizing these events through the last two decades, we come to the metaphor of the Cyborgue, a mixture of machine and human being. A much more powerful apparatus is going on, with the acceleration of the biotechnologies, when action goes through the agent interior, with unpredictable consequences. The 'power devices¿ over bodies, increase and multiply the contradictions and the paradoxes, in a very individualist society, that at the same time, preaches high performance and each one¿s responsibility to obtain success and money, but where people are totally dependent, manipulated by the media power, consumerism desires and out of their unperfected bodies (unrooted), trying desperate to get an ideal, unreacheable one. Incalculable transformations in work and free time are increasing the social disparities. The role of physical Education is reinforced in this study, despite the tension imposed by the established system, it can be extremely helpful on the re-signification of these common bodies of common people, excluded and segregated, so they can be person-bodies. And so, we intend to claim people to reflect and to be mobilized, so that we can still have chances of choices

Abstract:

High staff turnover in private group homes decreases organizational stability. There are a large number of developmentally disabled individuals in group homes of the high risk disaster city of New Orleans, indicating the need for stability from high staff turnover indicated by job satisfaction. The problem investigated in this study was the recognized difficulty in maintaining job satisfaction in order to retain staff in group homes of the high risk disaster city of New Orleans. The purpose of this study was to examine what factors contribute to job satisfaction. The variables examined were hours worked per week, years of service, salary, and employee benefits. A quantitative research study was employed to determine what factors significantly contributed to job satisfaction using a multiple regression methodology. The population in this study included direct service workers compiled of caregivers, nurses, and managers within three organizations facilitating group homes in the New Orleans area. From this population of employees the sample size resulted in 163 direct service workers. Questionnaires were used to collect data using Spector’s (1985) Job Satisfaction Survey as the instrument. A multiple regression design was used to analyze the factors influencing job satisfaction. Findings in the study determined that employee benefits significantly contributed to job satisfaction wherein hours worked per week, years of service, and salaries were not significant predictors of job satisfaction. Statistically significant results for benefits received resulted in t = 2.99 and p = .003. The results of the study provided insight into high risk disaster area group homes wherein managing staff turnover is specifically difficult.

The internet, through the web, has gained a great number of users which leads us to consider how the usability and the ergonomic issues have been worked on this field. In Brazil, the number of studies released as results ofr researches is still small concerning the usability of human-computer interaction, in which projectors and information systems developers do not use the ergonomic parameters for the evaluation of interfaces usability projects and tests. Worst than not considering these questions is letting aside one of the most important factors in this process: the user. He has to tbe considered. he is the answer to many questions that follow this subject. He can be taken as a great collaborator, as soon as he is invited to participate in the development and growing of this area. After all, the internet, the web and the sites were and still are designed for the user. One must let the user point out his mental models of how this information field must work, through the information organization, allowing the communication between him and the machine. Based on the user, the research takes the Card Sorting technique as a tool in the search for the users' first contact with the internet world, it was used as the core in the research, as a graphic interface.

Lai, Keyan. "Home country institutions and the internationalisation of emerging market multinationals : an ethnographic study of the organisational control in a Chinese MNC." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2016. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/97299/.

Full text
Abstract:
The internationalisation of emerging market multinationals (EMNCs) has been one of the most notable dynamics in international business in recent years. Despite the fact that there has been a growing literature over the last few years, we know very little about how these firms actually organise their work and manage their employees globally. Studies of these infant firms are believed to yield insights about how firms become internationalised and provide us with a unique opportunity to challenge and extend existing international business theory. Drawing on an ethnographic study of a major Chinese firm, this study offers detailed accounts on how the company manages its European subsidiaries and employees. Focussing on the organisational control system, it reveals that Teleman's control system is a highly centralised system with expatriates being placed at the centre, who are motivated by strong corporate culture and a well-designed reward system. This study investigates how such a control system has been developed in a Chinese context. It argues for a dynamic relationship between institutions and corporate actors, and suggests that the control system is the outcome of the company's interactions with the institutional environment in China. An Actor/Institution Interaction Process Model has been developed to capture such a process. This study contribute to the study of MNCs in a number of ways. First, it enhances our understanding of the internationalisation process and behaviours of EMNCs and MNCs in general. Second, with the Actor/Institution Interaction Process Model describing the steps and process by which the interactions between institutions and actors take place, this study opens the mysterious black box of how exactly institutions affect the behaviours of firms. In doing this, the study also demonstrates how studies of EMNCs can contribute to the extension of existing theories in IB.

Abstract:
This research study is focused on understanding the phenomenology of happiness of High Performing Teachers (HPT) working in an elementary school located in a Midwest City. The purpose of the study was to understand positive and negative emotions of HPT, through their experiences at work and home. Qualitative methodology through in-depth interviews was employed for this study. Tomkins' affect theory of happiness (ATH), was used to assess and explore positive and negative emotions of participants of the study. In this study a purposeful sample of 11 participants that work in elementary school located in a Midwest City, participated in in-depth, face-to face interviews. Results of this study based on experiences of HPT show that positive experiences such as relaxing time at home, spending time with family members they felt make them happy. To understand negative emotions, most of participants indicated that anxiety; inappropriate interactions with others at work site, and financial issues are the main negative experiences that impact their performance. Overall, most of HPT felt happy in life; however, results show that they are happier at home. This study brought new knowledge about positive and negative emotions and the importance for public organizations about improving staff interactions that may impact the contribution to performing better as teachers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
