Full textProfessional socialisation can be described as a subconscious process whereby persons internalise behavioural norms and standards and form a sense of identity and commitment to a professional field. The primary goal of professional socialisation is considered to be internalisation of the professional culture and the development of a professional identity. It is learned through interaction with professionals and educators during a student’s education. It is a continuous, life-long process of learning formal knowledge, skills and rules, as well as informal and tacit knowledge, norms, values and loyalties within the profession. An understanding of the professional socialisation process is vital to all persons involved in postsecondary education, for it is the professional socialisation process that allows education to achieve its goals. This dissertation determined whether students of Family Ecology and Consumer Sciences in South Africa are professionally socialised into developing a professional identity within the Family Ecology and Consumer Sciences profession. The objectives of the research included; to examine through a literature review the development of the profession and to propose a new position for the profession in South Africa; to identify the factors that influenced South African students when they decided on Family Ecology and Consumer Science as a field of study and the factors that influenced them while they were obtaining their degree at a South African university; to determine whether Family Ecology and Consumer Science students evidence the developmental stages of the Cohen model of the professional socialisation process; to determine Family Ecology and Consumer Science professionals’ perceptions of their professional preparation environments; and to analyse and compare Family Ecology and Consumer Science programmes at South African universities. A quantitative research methodology in the form of an analytical survey was undertaken with the participation of students and staff at South African universities where Family Ecology and Consumer Science programmes are offered by means of postal questionnaires. Three questionnaires were used in the research, namely; the Professional Socialisation Influences (PSI) questionnaire; the Professional Socialisation Staging Scale (PS3) questionnaire; and the Emphases, Process and Influences on the Professional Preparation Programmes questionnaire. A conceptual framework was used to compare the Family Ecology and Consumer Science professional preparation programmes presented at South African universities.. Descriptive statistics and the factor analysis method were used to examine the objectives to determine which factors influenced students to select Family Ecology and Consumer Sciences and the factors that influenced them while they were studying for a degree at a South African university. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA and Bonferroni Post-Hoc tests were used to examine whether Family Ecology and Consumer Science students evidenced the developmental stages of the Cohen model of the professional socialisation process. Descriptive statistics were used to examine Family Ecology and Consumer Science professionals’ perceptions of their professional preparation environments. The main findings drawn from the study indicated that Family Ecology and Consumer Sciences students, when selecting Family Ecology and Consumer Science as a profession, were influenced by the ‘Service Ideal’ and ‘Entrepreneurial’ factors. Aspects that elicited the highest percentage of positive responses from the respondents were; ‘desire to help others’; ‘a desire to improve the quality of family living’; ‘a desire to help people learn to do things’; and ‘entrepreneurial possibilities of the course’. While studying for a degree in Family Ecology and Consumer Science, they were influenced by the factors ‘Student Interaction’ and ‘Departmental Influences’. Aspects such as; ‘career opportunities available’; ‘application of what I learned to my personal life’; and ‘employment opportunities available’; were those that had the biggest influence.

Full textThe aim of the investigation is to assess the extent to which various initiatives aimed at improving the status of a technical subject like Home Economics (H/E), have helped to transform the attitudes and perceptions of teachers and students in a school in Zimbabwe. The study was carried out at Rusununguko Secondary School in Zimbabwe, where H/E was one of the technical subjects within a curriculum mainly dominated by academic subjects. Students and teachers' attitudes and perceptions towards H/E were assessed along the following dimensions: 1. The extent to which H/E is subjected to gender stereotyping; 2. The extent to which H/E is viewed as suitable for slow learners and low-achieving students; 3. The extent to which the subject suffers from subject choice constraints; 4. The extent to which H/E is viewed in terms of low academic and occupational expectations; 5. The extent to which the subject is perceived as offering low-status knowledge when compared to other subjects.

With the coming of the knowledge-based economy, the change of industrial structure, and the increasing establishment of universities, the trend and the opportunity of entering university are also on the increase. To meet the requirement of this current trend of the society, I put the focus of this study on the factors of senior high school students’ willingness to enter university and the relation between factors. The subjects are the graduates from home economics section in vocational senior high school in Taiwan in 2006. The analysis is based on the questionnaires collected. The students’ conditions are described by descriptive statistics, in which T test, the single factor variation count analysis (One-Way ANOVA) and Scheffe’s theory of multiple comparison are examined to see the relativity between students’ backgrounds, like “personal factor,” “family factor,” “school factor,” and “social fator,” and their willingness to enter university. Spearman’s theory is also used to analyze the relativity. The variables of students’ desire to enter university, the decision to take college entrance exams and which college entrance exams they plan to take are analyzed by X2. Among the 640 questionnaires, 583 of them are valid. The following results are based on the analysis of the data collected. 1.The subjects are mainly female. Their academic records are mostly above 70 points. Most of them live in non-metropolis areas. Most of their parents receive senior high schooling or less. 73.4% of family monthly income is less than 490000 NT dollars. 65.5% of the subjects are encouraged by their parents to enter university. 2.Significant variables in “personal factor” include gender, academic records, residential surroundings, family income, and parental attitude toward their children’s further study. 3.Significant variables in “family factor” include academic records, mother’s educational background, and parental attitude toward their children’s further study. 4.Significant variables in “school factor” include academic records, residential property, and parental attitude toward their children’s further study. 5.Significant variables in “school factor” include gender, academic records, mother’s educational background, family income, and parental attitude toward their children’s further study. 6.All the factors mentioned are significantly related to student’s desire to enter university. 7.Students’ personal background also influences students’ desire to enter university, the decision to take college entrance exams and which college entrance exams they plan to take.

The main purpose of this research is to study the relationship between the class-tutors’ managing styles and students’ schooling adjustment in senior vocational schools through researching methods of “quality” and “quantity”. The researcher measured the class-tutors’ managing styles with the “Measurement Form on home room teachers’ class management styles”, and then sifted out classes with four different teachers’ class managing styles to take the test of “Measurement Form on students’ schooling adjustment”. And then, according to the results of the questionnaire, four home room teachers with different class management styles were interviewed individually, and the top two well-adjusted classes were observed and studied for the class atmosphere they had presented. According to the data analysis, the following results are found: 1. There’s no obvious difference on home room teachers’ various individual backgrounds when it comes to their class managing styles toward “caring”and “guidance” in Ku Pao Senior Vocational School. 2. The strategies on class managing styles of Ku Pao’s class-titors could be divided into four dimensions:democratic, communicative attitude towards class with specific goals ; strict, demanding attitude towards class with disciplines; decent and forgiving attitude towards class with offering students more opportunities; neglectful ,ignoring attitude towards class without giving students directions. In spite of the four types of home room teachers mentioned above, their concepts and insistence emphasizing students’ attitudes and spirits, the communication with students as well as caring and protection for students are quite the same. 3. The students’ adjustment on both conduct and learning are intermediate in Ku Pao. However, the relationship between students and teachers as well as peer’s inter- action are good. 4. There’s an obvious relation on the relationship between students and teacher and teacher’s class-managing styles toward “learning” and “guidance”. But there is no obvious relation between student’s learning adjustment, rule adjustment, peer relationship, total school lifeadjustment and teacher’s class-managingstyles toward “caring” and “guidance”. 5. There’s no obvious difference on school life adjustment of students in different grades; However, students of different departments show obvious differences on school life adjustment. Among them, the adjustment of home economics students are the best, and that of the students of Food & Beverage Department and Tourism Department are the next . 6. Well-adjusted classes of Ku Pao have better performances in many ways. For example, they behave actively and positively on their studies; they can follow school rules and class regulations; their class-tutors care about these students and can handle their various situations well; classmates interact with one another more frequently and pleasantly. Finally, basing on the results of this research, the researcher offers suggestions to the class-titors, Ku-Pao home economics and commercial high school and future researches.

Full textThe constant need to adapt to change makes it essential to prepare young people for the challenges society imposes on them. With the extension of compulsory schooling up to the 12th grade, it’s sought to understand in this dissertation how schools do provide the necessary support to their students, specially the high school students, for them to equate their paths (both academic and professional) after school finishes. Accounting 18 interviews conducted with students, teachers and the technician responsible for the psychology and orientation department at a school in Lisbon, it was also sought to understand if the current model of the high school’s orientation service did respond to its students needs, or not. In order to do this, the opinions of these personas were compared to the existing offer, from which was possible to conclude that this current model is not only insufficient, but also made it able to identify other needs that, up to the moment, were not identified. Thus, an orientation service targeted for high school students is proposed in this dissertation, where measures are planned to meet the mentioned needs, such as the creation of a school office dedicated to this task.
