Abstract:
The study investigated Home Economics programme as a tool for marital conflict management. A descriptive survey was used for the study. The population consisted of all members of Home Economics Teachers’ Association of Nigeria (HETAN), Ondo State chapter. Sample of one hundred and sixty-three (163) respondents were drawn from the total population using simple random sampling technique. A self-developed structured and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were analyzed using mean. Findings reveal among others lack of trust; parental interference; economic pressure and unrealistic expectation as part of the factors responsible for marital conflict. Findings also revealed mental health issue; inappropriate care for children; communication breakdown and economic instability as part of the implications of inappropriate handling of marital conflict in homes. Furthermore, decision-making process to attain family goals; principles of selection and utilization of family resources and homes and family in a changing world were revealed as part of the contents of Home Economics programme that could help in marital conflicts management. As people consider going for counselling in preparation for marriage, they should also consider taking at least a remedial course in Home Economics to further equip them for stable marital life.

Abstract:
Magister Educationis - MEd
This mini-thesis comprises two sections, the what and the how of writing-across-the curriculum (WAC). Section one investigates the integration of writing into content area subjects through the writing process as a project of possibility for critical pedagogy. The view is held that the writing in content area subjects makes learning more meaningful, enjoyable and also empowers students to become critical self-determined thinkers. Students no longer only fill in blanks, choose the correct answer or rely on rote learning when writing in content area subjects, but write creatively and expressively in a variety of discourse forms. In chapter two the literature on WAC is reviewed in depth. The chapter commences with some thoughts on what writing is. Then it investigates the writing process and proceeds to what writing across the curriculum is, with all its merits highlighted. The implementation of writing across the curriculum which involves the whole school as well as a proposed writing across the curriculum policy comprises the main section of the chapter. One of the objectives of this research is to show that implementing the writing process in a content area subject not only improves the standard of writing but also enhances the internalisation of subject matter. A further objective is to illustrate that writing across the curriculum can facilitate change in the classroom. Section two, starting with chapter three, is devoted to the "how" of WAC, and its practical application. Observations in classrooms where writing in content area subjects were done in Missouri schools are described and examples of work done at the schools are cited. In chapter four attention is given to the design and presentation of a writing project in Home Economics based on the standard eight Home Economics syllabus. This classroom research is based on experiential learning. A detailed description of the results is included. The last chapter starts with a dream, an outline of a Home Economics project of possibility for a standard eight Home Economics class. The project is developed around community work to convince students that they can make a difference in the world by showing care and concern for the elderly. The second part of chapter five, deals with constraints with regard to the implementation of a writing programme in Home Economics at the school where I teach. The chapter concludes with recommendations for the implementation of a writing programme in Home Economics.

Dwyer, Sharon K. "The home satisfaction and work satisfaction of home economics teachers in Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/44631.

Full text
Abstract:

Home satisfaction, work satisfaction and the presence or absence of children were quantitatively assessed using responses from 132 Virginia vocational home economics teachers. Analysis of variance was used to examine whether home satisfaction and the presence or absence of children made a significant difference in work satisfaction. Those items which teachers found most and least satisfying in both their work and home situations were also identified. The analysis of variance found that mean home satisfaction scores made a significant difference upon work satisfaction, while the presence or absence of children did not. The interaction of home satisfaction and children made no significant difference. Home and family items teachers identified as being most satisfying were personal habits, housing, health of family members, and personal health. Those least satisfying were amount of time for self! division of household duties, time together as a family, and family schedule. Aspects which were the most satisfying at work were amount of commuting time, amount of control over job, opportunity to work independently, and friendships at work. Those which were least satisfying were flexibility of work schedule, opportunities for advancement, salary, and meal and break times. Overall, this group of vocational home economics teachers indicated a high level of satisfaction with work and home life.

Papadopoulos, Yannis. Ethics Lost: The severance of the entrenched relationship between ethics and economics by contemporary neoclassical mainstream economics. Mέta | Centre for Postcapitalist Civilisation, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.55405/mwp1en.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper we examine the evolution of the relation between ethics and economics. Mainly after the financial crisis of 2008, many economists, scholars, and students felt the need to find answers that were not given by the dominant school of thought in economics. Some of these answers have been provided, since the birth of economics as an independent field, from ethics and moral philosophy. Nevertheless, since the mathematisation of economics and the departure from the field of political economy, which once held together economics, philosophy, history and political science, ethics and moral philosophy have lost their role in the economics’ discussions. Three are the main theories of morality: utilitarianism, rule-based ethics and virtue ethics. The neoclassical economic model has indeed chosen one of the three to justify itself, yet it has forgotten —deliberately or not— to involve the other two. Utilitarianism has been translated to a cost benefit analysis that fits the “homo economicus” and selfish portrait of humankind and while contemporary capitalism recognizes Adam Smith as its father it does not seem to recognize or remember not only the rest of the Scottish Enlightenment’s great minds, but also Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments. In conclusion, if ethics is to play a role in the formation of a postcapitalist economic theory and help it escape the hopeless quest for a Wertfreiheit, then the one-dimensional selection and interpretation of ethics and morality by economists cannot lead to justified conclusions about the decision-making process.

Walmsley, Terrie, Alan Winters, and S. Amer Ahmed. Measuring the Impact of the Movement of Labor Using a Model of Bilateral Migration Flows. GTAP Technical Paper, November 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.21642/gtap.tp28.

Full text
Abstract:
The economics literature increasingly recognizes the importance of migration and its ties with many other aspects of development and policy. Examples include the role of international remittances (Harrison et al, 2003) or those immigrant-links underpinning the migration-trade nexus (Gould, 1994). More recently Walmsley and Winters (2005) utilised a Global Migration model (GMig) to demonstrate that lifting restrictions on the movement of natural persons would significantly increase global welfare with the majority of benefits accruing to developing countries. Although an important result, the lack of bilateral labor migration data forced Walmsley and Winters (2005) to make approximations in important areas and naturally precluded their tracking bilateral migration agreements. In a new technical paper, Walmsley, Winters, and Ahmed incorporate bilateral labor flows into the GMig model developed by Walmsley and Winters (2005) to examine the impact of liberalizing the temporary movement of natural persons. Quotas on both skilled and unskilled temporary labor in the developed economies are increased by 3% of their labor forces. This additional labor is supplied by the developing economies. The results confirm that restrictions on the movement of natural persons impose significant costs on nearly all countries, and that those on unskilled labor are more burdensome than those on skilled labor. Developed economies increasing their skilled and unskilled labor forces by 3% raise the real incomes of their permanent residents. Most of those gains arise from the lifting of quotas on unskilled labor. On average the permanent residents of developing countries also gain in terms of real incomes from sending unskilled and skilled labor, albeit the gains are lower for skilled labor. While results differ across developing economies, most gain as a result of the higher remittances sent home.

Abstract:
This paper estimates how eliminating gender inequality at work and at home in Mongolia would boost the country’s economic growth and sets out policy recommendations. Increasing the participation of women in the labor force can help boost overall economic growth in Mongolia, where the participation rate for working-age women is 53.4%, compared to 68.3% for men. The coronavirus disease pandemic is expected to have worsened this gender gap. Asian Development Bank estimates show that eliminating gender inequality at work and at home would increase female labor force participation in Mongolia to 63.2%, which would boost the annual per capita economic growth rate by 0.5 percentage points.
