Abstract:
AbstractA modification of Homann’s axisymmetric outer potential stagnation-point flow of strain rate $a$ is obtained by adding periodic radial and azimuthal velocities of the form $b\hspace{0.167em} r\sin 2\theta $ and $b\hspace{0.167em} r\cos 2\theta $, respectively, where $b$ is a shear rate. This leads to the discovery of a new family of asymmetric viscous stagnation-point flows depending on the shear-to-strain-rate ratio $\gamma = b/ a$ that exist over the range $\ensuremath{-} \infty \lt \gamma \lt \infty $. Numerical solutions for the wall shear stress parameters and the displacement thicknesses are given and compared with their large-$\gamma $ asymptotic behaviours. Sample similarity velocity profiles are also presented.

Abstract:
The steady mixed convection non-axisymmetric (Homann, Z. Angew. Math. Mech., vol. 16, 1936, pp. 153–164) stagnation-point flow over a vertical flat wall placed in a viscous and incompressible fluid is considered. A similarity solution is derived which involves the dimensionless parameters $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$, representing the shear-to-strain-rate ratio, and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$, a mixed convection parameter. Forced convection, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}=0$, is treated first where solutions additional to those given previously by Weidman (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 702, 2012, pp. 460–469) are found arising from singularities as $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}\rightarrow \pm 1$. Numerical solutions are obtained for representative values of both $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$. Critical values $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}_{c}$ of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$ are seen in opposing flow and these are treated in detail. Asymptotic results for large $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}$ are derived.

Abstract:
In this paper, the heat-transfer enhancement phenomena have been explored for non-axisymmetric Homann stagnation-point flow of Maxwell fluid. Furthermore, Buongiorno’s model for nanofluid is utilized to study remarkable impacts of random (Brownian) motion and thermophoresis of dispersed nanoparticle. The Maxwell nanofluid generates new class of asymmetric stagnation-point flows that depends on ratio [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text] is shear and [Formula: see text] is strain rate) and Deborah number [Formula: see text]. The numerical and asymptotic consequences of leading equations for current model are obtained using shooting technique. The solution is obtained for diverse values of involved parameters over [Formula: see text]. The wall shear stress, heat/mass transfer rate, velocities, temperature distributions and nanoparticle concentration compared to their large-[Formula: see text] asymptotic behaviors were presented for different values of involved parameters. It is observed that the numerical outcomes of wall shear stress, heat-transfer rate and mass flux best agree with their perturbative solution for large-[Formula: see text]. Moreover, the wall shears [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] grow as viscoelasticity raises. The reduction in heat flux and particles mass diffusion occurs near the wall boundary-layer due to clustering of nanoparticles. However, heated surface during thermophoresis is pushed nanoparticles into Brownian motion which constitute to enhance the heating process.

AbstractAfter more than a decade of intensive discussion, the concept of »sustainable development still remains rather vague. However, a broad consent exists that sustainability implies intragenerational as well as intergenerational equity. Therefore, a policy for sustainability has to go beyond pareto-superiority and to face both queastions of distribution and of scale. This reveals that at the core of sustainability ethical problems are involved. Although the notion of sustainability cannot be used as a concrete recipe, as Karl Homann correctly observes, it has tobe clarified in ordertobe a useful regulative idea.

Abstract:
The paper revisits two theories from the cultural anthropology. The first theory is by Bronisław Malinowski, and the second one by Karl Homann. Malinowski criticizes economism and moralism. I present further stages of this criticism, with special importance placed on the concept of homo oeconomicus. Malinowski demonstrates how moral norms are implemented in primitive cultures by means of magic, cults, customs and rituals and rites. Malinowski also argues for the significance of cultural institutions in stabilizing the functioning of primitive communities. These institutions sheltered the communities from the kind of crises that are also experienced in the present times, thus, giving the older schools of thought in cultural anthropology their deserving place within the contemporary thought.

Abstract:
The hybrid nanofluid under the influence of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is a new interest in the industrial sector due to its applications, such as in solar water heating and scraped surface heat exchangers. Thus, the present study accentuates the analysis of an unsteady three-dimensional MHD non-axisymmetric Homann stagnation point flow of a hybrid Al2O3-Cu/H2O nanofluid with stability analysis. By employing suitable similarity transformations, the governing mathematical model in the form of the partial differential equations are simplified into a system of ordinary differential equations. The simplified mathematical model is then solved numerically by the Matlab solver bvp4c function. This solving approach was proficient in generating more than one solution when good initial guesses were provided. The numerical results presented significant influences on the rate of heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of a hybrid nanofluid. The rate of heat transfer and the trend of the skin friction coefficient improve with the increment of the nanoparticles’ concentration and the magnetic parameter; however, they deteriorate when the unsteadiness parameter increases. In contrast, the ratio of the escalation of the ambient fluid strain rate to the plate was able to adjourn the boundary layer separation. The dual solutions (first and second solutions) are obtainable when the surface of the sheet shrunk. A stability analysis is carried out to justify the stability of the dual solutions, and hence the first solution is seen as physically reliable and stable, while the second solution is unstable.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to scrutinize the analysis of non-axisymmetric Homann stagnation point flow and heat transfer of hybrid Cu-Al2O3/water nanofluid over a stretching/shrinking flat plate. Design/methodology/approach The similarity transformation which fulfils the continuity equation is opted to transform the coupled momentum and energy equations into the nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Numerical solutions which are elucidated in the tables and graphs are obtained using the bvp4c solver. Findings Non-unique solutions (first and second) are feasible for both stretching and shrinking cases within the specific values of the parameters. First solution is the physical/real solution based on the execution of stability analysis. An upsurge of the ratio of the ambient fluid strain rate to the plate strain rate can delay the boundary layer separation, whereas a boost of the ratio of the ambient fluid shear rate to the plate strain rate only accelerates the separation of boundary layer. The heat transfer rate of hybrid nanofluid is greater for the stretching case than the shrinking case. However, for the shrinking case, the heat transfer rate intensifies with the increment of the copper (Cu) nanoparticles volume fraction, whereas a contrary result is found for the stretching case. Originality/value The present numerical results are original and new. It can contribute to other researchers on electing the relevant parameters to optimize the heat transfer process in the modern industry, and the right parameters to generate non-unique solution so that no misjudgment on flow and heat transfer features.

Abstract:
The steady two-dimensional Homan stagnation point flow and heat transfer of water base hybrid nanofluids (Al2O3 & Cu) over a permeable radially stretching/shrinking sheet have been studied. The similarity variables are introduced to transform the partial differential equations of the model into the ordinary differential equations. Numerical findings and dual solutions have been carried out by implementing the bvp4c code through MATLAB software. The most prominent effect is illustrated in the boundary layer thickness where the velocity profile increases upon the increment of the suction intensity but decreases in the temperature profile. Besides, the reduced Nusselt number also decreases as enlarging the value of copper and alumina nanoparticle volume fraction. The analysis of the first and second solutions are presented graphically with critical values as well as the detail discussions on the effects of the other involving parameters.

Abstract:
The Christmas Flood of 1717 was one of the most destructive storm floods in the North Sea region and affected large parts of the shores of Germany, the Netherlands and Germany (e.g. Jakubowski-Tiessen 1992). It occurred in the night from the 24th to the 25th of December 1717, when a strong northwesterly storm front pushed massive volumes of water into the funnel-shaped German Bight. Adding to the astronomical high tide occurring this night, water levels rose up to 4 m higher than the mean tidal high water mark. This lead to widespread overtopping and breaching of the dikes, which had been neglected in the preceding years due to extended periods of war and unrest. Since the event happened at night, the population was unable to react. About 9,000 people in Germany lost their lives and around 2,500 in the Netherlands. The small German town of Jever alone lost 1,700 people. In the village of Stollhamm, located on the peninsula of Butjadingen, which was exposed to the flood from two sides, 582 out of a population of 1,200 perished and only a third of the houses were not destroyed. In Eastern Frisia, 922 houses were completely destroyed and 1,672 damaged. In all of the affected regions in Germany, at least 3,000 houses were completely destroyed. Agriculture was severely affected by the salinization of large tracts of agricultural land and the loss of 2,300 horses, 9,500 cows, 2,800 sheep and 1,800 pigs was recorded in Eastern Frisia. In the following years, famines and epidemic plagues took a further toll on the population. Many people emigrated. It took several decades to reconstruct the dikes and to restore the livelihoods of the population.

Abstract:
AbstractA theoretical study is presented for the problem of orthogonal axisymmetric stagnation flow towards an infinite horizontal plate with a constant velocity in the presence of viscous dissipation and heat generation. The governing equations are reduced to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations by means of appropriate transformations for the velocity components and temperature. The similarity equations are solved numerically using the Matlab routine bvp4c. The results are compared with those known from the literature and an excellent agreement is found. The effects of involved parameters on thex-wise velocity component, temperature, skin friction, heat transfer and entropy generation rate are presented in graphical and tabular forms. It was found that the Eckert number Ec, the Prandtl number Pr and the heat generation parameter α play a significant role on the temperature, heat transfer and entropy generation rate.
