Pahom, Olga. Conversational Storytelling in Spanish-English Bilingual Couples. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350405165.

Full text
Abstract:
For more than three decades, the percentage of people who married someone of a different race, ethnicity, culture, or linguistic background has been on the rise in the United States, but the communication practices of such couples have remained understudied. Combining bilingualism, gender studies, and conversation analysis, this book explores and describes the storytelling practices and language choices of several married heterosexual Spanish-English bilingual couples, all residing in Texas but each from different geographic and cultural backgrounds. Based on more than 900 minutes of conversations and interviews, the book offers a data-driven analysis of the ways in which language choices and gender performance shape the stories, conversations, and identities of bilingual couples, which in turn shape the social order of bilingual communities. Using a combination of methodologies to investigate how couples launch, tell, and respond to each other’s stories, the book identifies seven main factors that the couples see as primary determinants of their choice of English and Spanish during couple communication. The use of conversation analysis highlights the couples’ own practices and perceptions of their language choices, demonstrating how the private language decisions of bilingual couples enable them to negotiate a place in the larger culture, shape the future of bilingualism, and establish a couple identity through shared linguistic and cultural habits.

Abstract:
Couple relationship education (CRE) is the provision of structured education intended to promote healthy couple relationships and prevent future relationship distress. CRE usually is brief, ranging in length from a single session (involving an assessment of the relationship with discussion of current strengths and challenges) to 12 to 14 hours of a skill-training curriculum. Research indicates that 10 or more hours of curriculum-based CRE produces short-term improvements in couple communication and relationship satisfaction; these findings have been well replicated. Though there is less research investigating the long-term effects of CRE, the available evidence suggests there is a benefit of CRE for couples at elevated risk of future relationship problems. Future research needs to further clarify which couples benefit from CRE, refine how CRE curriculum is tailored to address couples’ relationship needs, and enhance the reach of CRE to increase its community impact.

Davis, Shannon, and Theodore Greenstein. Why Who Cleans Counts. Policy Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781447336747.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
While housework is an often-studied phenomenon, Why Who Cleans Counts frames the performance of housework as a way to understand power dynamics within couples. Using couple-level data from the United States-based National Survey of Families and Households (N = 3,906), we perform Latent Profile Analysis to identify five categories, or classes, of couples: Ultra-traditional, Traditional, Transitional Husbands, Egalitarian, and Egalitarian High Workload. The book describes how the housework classes and the behaviors of the couples within them reveal the power dynamics within the couples, power dynamics that center around gendered norms. Using Latent Trajectory Analysis, we follow the couples over time to examine change and stability in their housework performance; their behavior over time also reveals the use of power in their relationships. Finally, we examine the reported housework time of the adult children of the NSFH couples to determine the extent to which the power dynamics experienced in one’s childhood home shapes one’s own adult gendered performance of housework. The book concludes with suggestions for how practitioners and scholars might use the book’s findings given the changing demographics of the United States.

Abstract:
Couple sex therapy is best understood as a subspecialty of couple therapy. Couple sex therapy may focus on problems in desire, pleasure, eroticism, and/or satisfaction. Although arousal and orgasm problems need to be carefully assessed and treated, problems related to desire represent the primary concern that brings couples to sex therapy. There is a great need for more research on sex therapy models, therapeutic processes, and outcome. The authors describe in detail the psychobiosocial model of assessment, treatment, and relapse prevention. A particularly important component is the four-session assessment, which features individual psychological, relational, and sexual histories. This comprehensive, multidimensional treatment model focuses on the use of psychosexual skill exercises practiced at home by the couple. Therapy interventions are directed at factors that subvert sexual desire and function as well as interventions to promote desire, pleasure, eroticism, and satisfaction. Clients are urged to develop a couple sexual style that balances each person’s sexual voice, thus becoming an intimate sexual team. The goal for all couples, straight or gay, married or unmarried, is to integrate intimacy and eroticism into their relationship. An individualized relapse prevention plan is also discussed as an integral component of comprehensive couple sex therapy.

Mitchell, Valory. Couple Therapy with Same-Sex and Gender-Variant (LGBT) Couples. Edited by Erika Lawrence and Kieran T. Sullivan. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199783267.013.007.

Full text
Abstract:
Same-sex and gender-variant couples are similar to heterosexual/gender-traditional couples in many ways. However, lesbian, gay, and bisexual couples and couples with one or both transgender partners (LGBT couples) exist in a stigmatizing environment that provides no social structures for them. As a result, these couples face three types of challenges: minority stress, lack of social support, and role and relational ambiguity. The author reviews research on these three challenges and offers specific techniques to address them. A conceptual model creates a bridge between sociocultural challenges and the psychological-relational consequences, affording therapists an understanding of how to plan and implement effective interventions. In addition, seven basic premises provide parameters for work with LGBT couples.

Abstract:
Abstract: Body image concerns can create challenges in a cancer survivor’s partnered relationship, and aspects of this relationship can influence how a survivor copes with body image concerns. This chapter describes both research and clinical interventions focusing on couples experiencing body image distress associated with cancer and its treatment. First, the chapter reviews observational and couple-based intervention research relevant to the problem of body image distress and the partnered relationship. Next, it offers an overview of conceptual principles relevant to couple-based clinical approaches, focusing on the key concepts of mentalization and attachment narratives. Then it provides detailed guidance on approaches for the assessment, case formulation, and management of body image distress in a relational framework through case examples. Finally, it offers a summary and introduces questions to stimulate future work in this area, including how to best optimize, expand, and disseminate couple-based interventions addressing cancer-related body image concerns.

Full text
Abstract:
There has been much debate among researchers in couple and family psychology on whether and how much the transition to parenthood affects partners’ conjugal life. This chapter provides a literature review aimed at determining what is currently known about relationship functioning and sexual functioning during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Most existing research on the subject reveals that the birth of a first child is associated with a decline in relationship satisfaction and sexual functioning. Recent data from prospective studies suggest that the transition from being a couple to being parents is actually associated with declines in relationship functioning over and above the normative declines reported by couples without children. This chapter examines the impact of individual, relational, and situational factors that have been proposed to explain this decline. Finally, the strengths and limitations of current research are discussed, and future research avenues are considered.

Full text
Abstract:
The voices in this book come from the stories of gay and lesbian partners who talk about their struggles over the years in building a life together. The stories reach beyond the obvious realities of sexual orientation to speak to the joys, sorrows, hopes, and fears of human beings who are committed to making their relationships work. Based on a life-span perspective, in-depth interviews of people whose relationships have lasted more than 15 years explored how partners adapted over the years. Each interview consisted of questions that focused upon dimensions of these relationships over time from the unique perspective of each partner. They were asked about conflict over the years, decision-making styles, ways of working out roles, the importance of social supports, and sexual and psychological intimacy. The research upon which the book is based has continuity with the authors' earlier work on lasting relationships among heterosexual couples, including Lasting Marriages: Men and Women Growing Together (Praeger, 1995). Compared to marriages, relatively little research has been done on the development of same sex relationships. This book will be of great interest to all researchers and students of gender differences, marriage and family therapy, human sexuality, and interpersonal relationships.
