Nicolaou, Daina. "An holistic customer satisfaction model." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2007. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/1155/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis proposes an holistic customer satisfaction model that can be used as a metric for marketing performance evaluation. The hypotheses aim to develop an integrated customer satisfaction model that synthesizes customer satisfaction antecedents and consequences. The rationale behind this thesis and its relevant hypotheses is multi-faceted. Chiefly, customer satisfaction is considered as marketing's sine qua non; often cited, in the first pages of most of the best-selling marketing books, as the ultimate purpose of the marketing function and even as the short definition of marketing. As such, if there is one metric by which marketing performance should be evaluated with, it should be against its scope and how well it fulfils its goal. Customer satisfaction measurement is not an exact science by default mainly because it deals with human beings and their behaviour that is not only difficult to surface but also difficult to measure. This challenge translates into a plethora of customer satisfaction definitions, antecedents and consequences leading to reluctance to employ customer satisfaction formally for such a serious matter such as marketing performance evaluation and control. Thus, the thesis is a synthesis of prominent customer satisfaction models in an effort to integrate them into one, since the evaluation activity does take an holistic perspective whereas partial models pose the risk of losing synergies that may form in the whole. A multi-method approach is employed to arrive at the integrated customer satisfaction model to be used as a marketing performance metric, commencing with a rigorous review of available models in the literature, continuing with in depth interviews with company managers to understand the industry utilised for the research and content analysis of customer-completed questionnaires and also documents of voluntary expressed free-flow voice of customer (availa1?le online where customers rate companies). The latter consists of elaborate questionnaires completed by customers regarding the different elements of the model. Structural Equation Modelling is deployed to build and test the holistic model as it is the only technique that can simultaneously deal with antecedents and consequences. The first (literature review) and second (in-depth interviews with managers and content analysis of customers' reviews and opinions regarding their purchase experience) phases of the research revealed a massive 25-construct model for customer satisfaction with thirteen antecedents (expectations, performance, disconfirmation, service quality, value, dissonance, emotions/affect, equity, regret/rejoice, assimilation/contrast, attribution, recovery and justice) and eleven consequences (stated loyalty, switching, price tolerance, repurchase, share of wallet, trust, complimenting, complaining to the firm, complaining to a third party, positive and negative word of mouth). In order to test the model, in phase three, a survey questionnaire was designed and calibrated to collect data for analysis using LISREL. Thorough and strict CFA and SEM revealed that thirteen (eight antecedents: performance, disconfirmation, service quality, value, dissonance, emotions/affect, equity, regret/rejoice, and four consequences: trust, repurchase and positive and negative word of mouth) constructs constituted the holistic customer satisfaction model empirically verified in the present thesis.

Kasa, Narasimha Murthy Arjun. "MODEL DRIVEN PRODUCT REALIZATION : A holistic demonstration of model driven product development." Thesis, KTH, Industriell produktion, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-151257.

Full text
Abstract:
Model driven product realization is an emerging methodology in industrial scenario. It focuses onusing 3D models in various formats to design, manufacture and inspect a product. The benefits ofthis methodology are improved cross functional interoperability, reliable modeling and simulation, optimized design decision making, improved performance predictability, strengthened collaborative environment and shortened development time. Currently the prominence of 2Ddrawings and its usage is still prevalent in the industries which results in under‐utilization of the presently available CAx systems leading to diminished productivity. This thesis is aimed to demonstrate the capabilities and impact of model driven approach to formulate an efficient product development methodology in a real industry scenario. For achieving the intent a prototype product is considered which is used in suspension system of the research concept vehicle developed by KTH transport labs. The scope includes the industrialization of the prototype resulting in new/final design, process plan, operation plan inspection plan and eventually a manufactured part using annotated 3D models at all stages. It also showcases the process and product feedback methodologies possible by this approach. The foundations for this demonstration are ISO 10303 standard and STEP (standard for the exchange of product model data) application protocols. These define the computer interpretable representation and exchange of product manufacturing information across various domains. There have been considerable advancements in these standards in recent years but a standard way of approaching the model driven product development does not exist. Hence this demonstration enables as a stepping stone for implementation of this approach in real world.

LaValley, Christopher Travis. "Holistic Model of Website Design Elements that Influence Trustworthiness." UNF Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/812.

Full text
Abstract:
Trustworthiness of a website relies foremost on a good first impression which includes the visitor’s perception of the user interface. The focus of this research is to investigate the effects of website design elements on user perception of trustworthiness of a site and provide a set of guidelines for website designers. The research design is based on Yosef Jabardeen’s (2009) “conceptual framework analysis”. In this research paper, a holistic model is developed to depict the relationships among website design elements and trustworthiness. The model was tested, validated and updated using the results of the repertory grid technique, a process that elicits perceptions about a topic from an individual. For this research, the topic was website trust, the objects were the website design elements, and the constructs were elicited perceptions regarding those website design elements. The repertory grid technique was applied in two stages to a set of participants made up of website users and website designers. Analysis yielded useful information regarding website design associations and correlations of perceptions. The research findings confirmed original suggestions regarding associations and produced an updated, validated model of website design elements. The research indicated that while all design elements had their importance regarding trust, those elements that provided for the function and security of the website rated the highest in importance and expectation. The validated model will aid website designers in understanding what elements are appealing to the visual senses and conjure credibility and trust. Most importantly, this new understanding may help designers to create websites that attract and retain new users and establishing a successful presence on the Internet.

Ricks, Esmeralda Jennifer. "A holistic healthcare model for higher education campus health services." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/666.

Full text
Abstract:
Most students are adolescents and young adults, a group characterized by a new-found sense of independence, experimentation with sex and sometimes drugs and a feeling of invincibility (Gayle, Richard, Keeling, Garcia-Tunon, Kilbourne, Narkunas, Ingram, rogers and Curran, 1990:1538). These behavioural, developmental and environmental issues may contribute to premature morbidity, mortality and reduced quality of life for university students (Patrick et al., 1992:260). The ages of staff on the other hand range from young adults to retirement age. The types of health problems that exist among staff who use the campus health service include First Aid treatment on site for injuries on duty and more chronic health problems such as, for example, hypertension and diabetes mellitus. To date there is very little evidence as to whether or not the healthcare needs of students and staff are being met comprehensively or whether the practitioners rendering the service are knowledgeable and complying with the PHC norms and standards developed by the department of Health’s Quality Assurance Directorate. The lack of such empirical data can contribute to misconceptions and hamper the management of public health problems experienced in SA, for example sexually transmitted infections and the transmission of HIV. Thus the purpose of this research was to develop a model that would assist registered nurses employed at a higher education campus health service in the Western Region of the Eastern Cape Province to render a healthcare service relevant to the healthcare needs of the students and staff on campus.

Mihindu, S. "Holistic model for knowledge collaboration in scientific communities of practice." Thesis, University of Salford, 2010. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26817/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research sets out to develop a holistic model for Knowledge Collaboration for scientific Communities of Practice (CoP). It, inter alia, investigates appropriate methods which support Knowledge Collaboration of Scientific Community of Practice (SCoP). It also identifies the main challenges associated with supporting Knowledge Collaboration and ways of addressing specific challenges in the development of a Knowledge Collaboration Environment (KCE) within SCoP. In addition, it establishes how individuals within CoP and groups associated with CoP create new knowledge in collaboration. The necessity for scientific communities to work as CoP has significantly risen in recent years. The requirement of standard collaboration and communication tools, and appropriate methodologies to author KCEs has been an important development for the success of Distributed Knowledge Collaboration (DKC) activities of scientific CoP. The study addresses key issues and gaps found in four different areas: understanding of knowledge and Knowledge Collaboration, KCEs, tools and techniques for supporting Knowledge Collaboration, and specific requirements of scientific communities. The thesis employed a multi-methodological approach in conducting the study, which included the use of questionnaire, workshop, observations, interviews, and focus groups in obtaining data on which the study was based. SCoP refers to those who employ the 'scientific method' for seeking, interrogating, and creating processes and systems in conducting and advancing their work. Knowledge Collaboration needs of SCoP are different to the needs of CoP as members of the SCoP come from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, and their involvement is with heterogeneous work environments. A holistic Knowledge System Model (KSM) and a live prototype to establish the requirements related to the facilitation of Knowledge Collaboration within a SCoP was developed and validated. This development utilises non-intrusive technologies to provide appropriate incorporation of collaboration tools within their work environment and the potential of multiple server integration. The KSM provides the required flexibility and configurability within a prospective Knowledge System due to its ability to fulfil specific needs of the SCoP. The study recommends that members of the SCoP require Knowledge Collaboration tools that can co-exist within their work environment but operate non-intrusively within their professional work setting. Virtual Infrastructure integration provides the required functionality to overcome the challenges of creating an appropriate KCE for realising successful collaboration. The KSM facilitates the development of appropriate KCE for SCoP. There is paramount value in embracing the holistic view of Knowledge Collaboration as defined through the Knowledge Collaboration terminology stack and vast potential in utilising non-intrusive client/server technology for DKC applications. The holistic model's flexibility provides timely provision of an acceptable KCE for community collaboration.

Hedayat, Reza. "A holistic and integrated infrastructure system vulnerability assessment conceptual model." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/9351/.

Full text
Abstract:
The increased number of manmade and natural disruptive and destructive events have increased concerns over the vulnerability of infrastructure systems. As existing assets age and citizens become more dependent on the services and products provided by these infrastructure systems, they reveal the lack of plans to protect infrastructure from potential threats and prompt the need to work on preparedness, response, and recovery plans to reduce the impact on service users. One of the challenges is to select and protect appropriate infrastructure from potential threats in the most efficient way, with limited resources, and not only by considering asset vulnerability but also user vulnerability. To accomplish these goals, decision-makers would benefit from data and information derived from more inclusive and holistic vulnerability assessment. Therefore this research will develop an approach to improve the decision making quality and reduce negative and costly consequences of disruptive events, through assessing the vulnerability of infrastructure systems by a more holistic approach. After a review of concepts and current methods available to assess vulnerability of infrastructure and identifying decision-maker’s needs, this thesis develops a conceptual vulnerability assessment model. This approach presents a broader infrastructure view, which will increase decision making quality in the light of current and emerging challenges. It also includes factors, and characteristics of infrastructure resilience, and downstream and upstream dependencies of a system. The outcomes and main distinctive features of this model are that it will extend the system boundaries and integrate users of the services provided by the system, or in other words “downstream dependencies”, as a factor in overall vulnerability assessment in order to give a more holistic view of infrastructure vulnerability. This concept also relates resilience factors directly into a vulnerability assessment model and provides a broader view to assess vulnerability of critical infrastructure. These distinctive features will provide more value based information for decision makers to decide more effectively. To bring together different vulnerability factors and system components “analytic hierarchy process” (AHP) is employed which is a first time for infrastructure system modelling. Ultimately these concepts have been demonstrated for a test case of a Water Supply System.

Sabir, Iffat. "A holistic emotions measurement model : using the viable system model to diagnose workforce emotions." Thesis, University of Hull, 2014. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:10760.

Full text
Abstract:
Research Purpose: The current study attempted to redress the ‘narrowness’ in the research on the causes of workforce emotional experiences by utilizing the cybernetic Viable System Model (VSM) framework, and developing a reference model to facilitate the integrated view of the related aspects of affective workplace environment. Methods: Based on VSM distinctions, an analytical tool (named as Holistic Emotions Measurement Model – HEMM) was developed for gauging the broad range of the causes of emotional experiences prevailing in the work environment. It facilitated the joined-up functional and the relational view of the entire working environment adequate for holistic diagnosis of the antecedents of emotions within the work settings. HEMM was tested empirically by conducting survey in Pakistan corporate sector. The development and test of the reference model was guided by the constructivism-positivism philosophy respectively. Results: The functional and relational view of the workplace environment captured by the reference model helped in comprehending the causes of emotional experiences holistically. The field testing results confirmed the potential utilization of the tool in diagnosing the antecedents of affective experiences of the employees while at work. Conclusion: The current study provided an empirical account on the effective utilization of organizational cybernetics principles in the field of organizational behaviour which has remained largely unexplored till date. VSM framework has been proposed as a tool for understanding work environment and diagnosing the causes of the workforce emotions generation, which has enhanced the state-of-art theories on emotions management. The application of the reference model on field provided evidence about the convenient use of VSM in conjunction to Affective Events Theory (AET) as emotions measurement tool.

Abstract:
There is a large number of information security awareness programs (iSAP) found in the literature with multiple approaches. Considering that the number of security breaches performed by insiders is as high as 48%, the effectiveness of such programs is questionable. This leaves a considerable space for external, but also internal criminals, to perform and succeed in their attacks, something that can cause heavy losses (both economical and less tangible as reputation) to organizations. This thesis decided to study some of those iSAP to see their strengths and weaknesses. After studying the approaches in focus for this thesis, and following an inductive research method, a new model to develop iSAP from a holistic point of view was presented. The solution has been aligned with subject matter experts (SME) at “Company X” and with end-users external to that company. The model is now ready to be studied empirically in organizations to evaluate its effectiveness.

Energy use in houses causes the indirect emission of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and there is an increasing need to develop effective models to predict such emissions to establish benchmarks against which reductions can be targeted. The Prometheus model described in this thesis is such a tool which was developed under a holistic approach integrating the physical conditions of the house, climatic variations and also social variables all of which affect consumption. The model is sufficiently robust that with minimal modification in the extension of underlying databases it could be used in other areas within the UK.

Abstract:
While the studio environment has been promoted as an ideal educational setting for project-based disciplines, only a few comprehensive qualitative studies of the design studio have been undertaken; even fewer emphasise educator and student perceptions of this environment. As highlighted in this study, such a situation is problematic given the changes and challenges facing higher education, including those associated with new technologies such as online learning. This study responds to this need for a comprehensive study of the studio environment by adopting Grounded Theory methodology in a qualitative comparative way. It explores the limitations and benefits of a face-to-face design studio and virtual design studio as experienced by architecture students and educators at an Australian university in order to better understand the potential of a blended environment to maximise learning. The main outcome is a holistic multidimensional blended learning model that, through the various modalities, provides adaptive capacity in a range of settings. The model facilitates learning through self-determination, self-management, and the personalisation of the learning environment. Another outcome–a conceptual design education framework–provides a basic tool for educators to evaluate existing learning environments and to develop new learning environments with enough flexibility to respond effectively to a highly dynamic and increasingly technological world.

Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to provide an empirical study of a Sino-foreign joint venture negotiation model that integrates strategies from western literature into a Chinese environment and cultural context. The findings and recommendations of the study aim to help foreign negotiators penetrate the important Chinese market through a systematic approach emerging from this Sino-foreign joint venture negotiation model. The thesis provides a holistic view on Sino-foreign joint venture negotiation. Case study method was determined as the best methodology. The suitability of the Sino-foreign joint venture negotiation model and the research protocol of this study were demonstrated via 5 in-depth interviews and a pilot test before the actual fieldwork. The major findings of this thesis suggest that foreign negotiators need to manage complex areas such as the Chinese environment, the company requirements of both organisations and the Chinese negotiating process. Besides, the foreign negotiators need to equip themselves with Problem Solving Attitude (PSA) and an understanding of Chinese cultural concepts, such as guanxi, face, renqing, reciprocity and trust so as to make the negotiation effective. Different strategies emerge at different stages of the process and there is no direct relationship between successful negotiation and joint venture outcomes. A model and strategies for joint venture establishment in China are provided, but the model itself has no predictive power on joint venture outcomes such as profit satisfaction.

Lane, April D. "INCREASING LONG TERM WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS: AN INDIVIDUALIZED, HOLISTIC, SELF-CARE MODEL." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2014. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/13.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the many weight loss options available, the majority of overweight and obese individuals who try to lose or maintain weight loss are unsuccessful. This lack of success has been the focus of extensive research. In an attempt to develop more effective modalities, researchers have identified several predictors of weight loss success. However, the efficacy of diets is still limited. For many, this lack of weight loss success may be due to issues such as depression, loneliness, anxiety, lack of support, or other environmental factors that may be imperceptibly related to food and exercise. Repeated dieting failures may produce feelings of deprivation, low self-esteem, reduced self-efficacy, and dietary rebellion. For these individuals, a more holistic approach to addressing weight-related issues may be more effective and is the impetus for the development of this project. This project was developed utilizing several previously identified predictors of weight loss success, holistic and weight loss models, along with several self-help lay publications. This resulted in the development of a unique, holistic, self-care guide that is easily individualized and based on personal weight management needs. Individuals can potentially identify their unique physical, emotional, and spiritual motives for overeating or lack of physical activity, and design their own plan of action; potentially providing themselves with a new level of health and happiness not previously realized.

Lewis, Lucy Karelyn. "A model for developing a holistic collegiate curriculum for string performance and pedagogy." Thesis, The University of Iowa, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3638399.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis is directed toward teachers who work primarily with music degree students on the collegiate level. Pedagogy is simply too often "hit or miss" in a student's degree curriculum, and yet the reality is that most musicians will have to teach at some point in their careers, whether they realize it as students or not.

This thesis provides a model for how to holistically integrate pedagogy into all aspects of the performance curriculum, so that string performance students are provided with the necessary tools to be both excellent performers and teachers, regardless of whether they ever take a pedagogy class. This is accomplished through: the examination of survey results regarding how schools are incorporating the National Association for Schools of Music requirements and recommendations for the integration of pedagogy into course curricula; an overview of survey results reporting how string performers and educators feel about the quality of the education they received in regards to preparedness for artist string teaching; and a discussion of how to create a holistic curriculum for performance and pedagogy that encompasses the three main areas of most string performance curriculums (the private studio, chamber music, and orchestra).

The overarching goal of this thesis is to build on the rich tradition of string playing and teaching that already exists, by introducing a curriculum that will holistically educate the student as both performer and pedagogue. At the heart of this approach is the need for fostering a "see one, do one, teach one" mentality in students.

Abstract:
This research investigates the evolving relevance of Buddhism in the contemporary West and the full potential of the therapeutic value of the ethico-psychological perspective of the mind-body complex and meditation in Theravāda Buddhism. This influence encompasses its ethics, psychology and philosophy, and has given rise to a vibrant socially engaged Buddhism with its roots in traditional Buddhist societies but with a distinct Western character. Buddhism offering a different psychological, ethical, phenomenological perspective and a soteriology and the West its scholarship and analytical approach, rejuvenating Buddhism through uncovering its doctrinal core and discarding rituals, culture-specific beliefs and politicization accumulated over centuries in Asia, have benefited mutually from the encounter. Nevertheless, the Buddhist influence remains largely fragmented, in keeping with the reductionist secularism, materialism, social activism and the defining role of science and technology in the West in a globalized setting, creating barriers to a more inclusive approach. This research notes the impact of Buddhism particularly in psychology and the exponential growth of various applications using mindfulness, an adaptation of sati, as a secular technique largely divorced from its source. The study contends that the therapeutic value of meditation can be enhanced by adopting a more proactive approach as in Buddhism, and mindfulness made more effective through improving its quality, strength and durability by introducing a benevolent aspect stemming from basic ethics, strengthened by concentration and complemented by other meditative practices tailored to individual needs and capabilities. The research also proposes a holistic model of Buddhism acceptable in a secular context through incorporating a basic knowledge base comprising existing empirical evidence from a variety of fields that corroborate main Buddhist descriptors of ontological and phenomenological reality.

Abstract:
Within the context of parent education, the existing parenting programmes in Hong Kong are either drawn from contexts that are less sensitive to the local one or imbued with Confucian and High Context culture (HC) values of social hierarchy and group harmony. Within such cultural values educators and learners are expected to behave in adherence to the expected social role wherein the educator is the knowledge transmitter whereas the learner is the knowledge absorber or the approaches to parenting that permeate the programmes are inappropriate to the context. The impracticality and cultural insensitivity of these existing parent education programmes, together with news related to adaptation of both new arrivals and Hong Kong locals in terms of adapting to the increasingly diverse sociocultural population in Hong Kong, alert the parent education field to a dire need to develop a model for parent education programmes that caters for different family unique needs within the diverse sociocultural context. With an aim to explore the essential components that are needs and cultural sensitive, the study adopted narrative inquiry as the research methodology to explore the three research questions: (I) To what extent do sociocultural factors affect group interaction among members from diverse backgrounds in Hong Kong? (2) What mechanisms affect group interaction among people from diverse backgrounds in parent education programmes in Hong Kong? (3) How can one formulate a model of parent education programme to suit families having diverse backgrounds, values, and beliefs in the Hong Kong context? The findings of these three research questions emphasise the vital role played by the group facilitator in creating a mutual supportive and need sensitive context to engage learners in mutual learning. Also, a critical analysis of the Subjective Group Dynamics model (SGD) is discussed in the light of group formation among members with diverse sociocultural background within the Confucian and High Context culture (HC) oriented context culture in Hong Kong. The findings of the research questions and analysis of SOD build the foundation for the Family-centred Mutual Support Model of parent education programmes in Hong Kong that emerged from this study.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate how companies address sustainability holistically and compare the practical results to theoretical findings. The holistic approach of sustainability includes four dimensions and five corporate system elements.   Methods: For creating the theoretical framework a literature review was executed. Empirical data was gathered from a multiple case study. In total five case companies have been selected and five interviews have been conducted. Furthermore the interview guideline included a small survey. Empirical data was complemented by information from sustainability reports and companies website.   Main findings: Sustainability is partly executed in differently in practical terms compared to theory research. The differences are mainly explained by the unique use of sustainability initiatives, which are adapted to companies circumstances.   Academic contributions: Previously, only a few researchers investigated the combination of initiatives to provide a holistic sustainability approach. Furthermore a lack of practical research in the field of sustainability has been identified. This thesis contributes to close this gap by investigating five case companies regarding the use of multiple initiatives.   Practical implications: Based on the findings a model was created by the authors. By applying this model and using recommended initiatives companies are able to establish a holistic sustainability approach, involving all sustainability dimensions and corporate system elements.   Limitations: The interviews have been translated from German or Dutch into English, which increases the risk of wrong interpretations. Further the interview involved only one representative per company. Additionally the number of small case study companies and case companies from the service sector might limit the generalization of the results.

Gipson, Christina Marie. "Extreme volunteering : a holistic perspective on international women sport volunteers." Thesis, Brunel University, 2012. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/6566.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the lives of a group of fifteen exceptional women who were dedicated to the cause of advancing girls and women in sport and physical activity. Over several decades, they worked in a voluntary capacity to transform women in sport through practice and policy development. Moreover, they aligned such unpaid work with personal and local experiences of volunteering that eventually led to their participation in international sport circles and policies. The key settings for their voluntary service came from their roles in the emergence and maintenance of two international women‘s sport organisations – International Association of Physical Education and Sport for Girls and Women (IAPESGW) and WomenSport International (WSI). In addition, their voluntary roles were so substantial that they were inextricably interwoven within all aspects of their lives. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the participants‘ relationships with sport volunteering, in the particular settings of IAPESGW and WSI, whilst analysing the role of volunteering in their lives. The study utilised a holistic framework to gain an in-depth understanding about the women‘s commitment to the cause and how volunteering fits into their lifestyle. As there were no models from the sport volunteering field that were appropriate for this study, the research drew upon and developed Hustinx and Lammertyn‘s (2003) non-sport model called the Collective and Reflexive Styles of Volunteering (SOV). The SOV was valuable because it offered a multi-dimensional approach to explain how, why, and when the participants got involved with advancing women‘s sport and physical activity, and how their involvement related to and influenced their wider lifestyles. A critical realist and social constructionist philosophy was employed to have a greater understanding of the women‘s realities, and life history interviews were conducted to gain a greater understanding about how they constructed their knowledge about themselves, sport, and the world around them. The study illustrated the complexity of the women‘s volunteer participation. The findings suggested that their sport passion and identity guided many of their actions and activities throughout their life, such as choices for higher education and within professional work. In addition, the findings showed that it was their personal experiences and gained knowledge about gender disadvantages in sport that initially stimulated and then repeatedly reinforced their interests and commitment. Although these had strong impacts on the women‘s entrance into and commitment to the cause, the findings highlighted that the women had to identify the conditions of their relationships, family, and types of paid work to be compatible with levels of volunteering. The study concluded that sport researchers can benefit from examining volunteers from a holistic perspective to gain a better understanding of the conditions under which individuals make such an extreme, voluntary contribution to sport.

Asnaashari, E. "A holistic conceptual model for managing construction logistics in building projects : the case of Iran." Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2011. http://irep.ntu.ac.uk/id/eprint/342/.

Full text
Abstract:
Logistics, as a factor that affects the total cost of a product, has attracted attention in many industries. However, construction is behind other industries, such as manufacturing and food, in terms of obtaining value through application of effective logistics management. Some specific characteristics of the construction industry, such as fragmented supply chain, indirect employment, temporary location and matchless products, have prevented organisations utilising logistic management in their projects. In construction, logistics is about the mobilisation of different types of resources to feed the project with the required materials and components at the right time, in the right place, right quantity and right quality. To do so, a new approach to construction logistics should be undertaken that respects the special characteristics of this industry. This research aims to develop a conceptual model based on the current practice of construction logistics in building projects. This model, in addition to complying with the special characteristics of the construction industry, is also adapted to the economic, cultural, technological and environmental specifications of the building sector in Iran. The complexity mindset is adopted in this research which allows considering a construction logistics system as a whole and the system may assert an aggregate behaviour. This approach is called holism and investigates the performance of complex adaptive systems. The study is focused on the Iranian construction industry as the main source of data collection. To achieve the aim and objectives of the research, a literature review was followed by qualitative and quantitative data collection. This research adopted the complementarity approach that uses qualitative and quantitative strategies in a way that complement each other. In the qualitative phase, twenty four open-ended interviews were conducted with construction practitioners who work in the building sector in Iran. Gathered data was analysed using NVivo. This involves codifying the textual data to find themes, categories and relationships. The results of the first phase were rich and exploratory and explained opinions, norms and attitudes. Based on the results of the first phase, a questionnaire with ten sections was designed to investigate different aspects of construction logistics from wider perspectives by conducting a survey on a large sample. The data gathered from the second phase were analysed in a descriptive manner to provide statistical information about the present practice of construction logistics in the Iranian building sector. The final product of this research is a holistic conceptual model that has four subsystems: (a) environmental factors (b) operational factors, (c) commercial factors, and (d) managerial factors. Each subsystem has several agents that are different functions of logistics in a building project. The environmental factors include project size and location, peak working seasons, resource conservation and weather conditions. The operational factors discuss technological matters, construction methods, new materials, waste and transportation. The commercial factors encompass the supply chain, finance, economic conditions, material costs, estimation, supplier selection, packaging, purchasing, inspection, and material quality. The managerial factors cover material management, warehousing, material handling, information management, scheduling, delivery, organisation, personnel, knowledge, culture and site layout designing. All of these functions are integrated under the topic of construction logistics model. The model also illustrates the relationships among agents of the system. The developed model, in addition to technical factors, has paid attention to soft factors such as culture, economy and knowledge. The model is adaptable to changing environments and elements may be added or deleted from the system whenever required.

Bass, Janice C. "Development of a model of holistic reflection to facilitate transformative learning and practice in midwifery." Thesis, Griffith University, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/415297.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Reflective capacity is an essential professional attribute that underpins the development of midwives as competent, autonomous, self-determined, life-long learners and critically reflective thinkers. Despite this requirement, little is known about how reflective capacity is developed, facilitated, or measured within midwifery education and practice. Aim The aim of this PhD (with publication) program of work was to develop a model of holistic reflection and education tools that facilitate transformative learning in midwifery practice. Methods A mixed-methods, education design research approach was used to develop educational resources to facilitate the development and measurement of holistic reflection within midwifery education and practice. Education Design Research (EDR) within the pragmatist paradigm provides a flexible approach to choosing the appropriate research method linked to the purpose of each phase of the study. Study 1. Conceptual framework and development of a model of holistic reflection This descriptive study involved the development of a conceptual framework and the Bass Model of Holistic Reflection (Bass Model). The unique combination of education and practice philosophy, transformative, emancipatory, and whole-person learning represents a novel design that incorporates reflection, critical reflection, and reflexivity within a holistic continuum of reflective practice to facilitate transformative learning. Study 2. Testing the Bass Model of Holistic Reflection This study was conducted in two parts and included: Study 2a. Developing reflective capacities in midwifery students: Enhancing learning through reflective writing. A pre-and post-intervention design was used to determine the efficacy of the Bass Model in supporting the development of reflective capacity through reflective writing. The introduction of the Bass Model made a significant improvement in the written reflections of students. Improved scores ranged between 14% to 57% with a mean improvement of 31.2%. Study 2b. Midwifery students' experiences and expectations of using a model of holistic reflection. The second part involved focus groups with students. Data were thematically analysed. The study revealed that the use of the Bass Model, combined with integrative and structured reflective activities, facilitated holistic reflection, and identified the factors that effectively facilitated the development of reflective capacity from a student perspective. Study 3. Exploring the needs and experiences of educators in facilitating the use of the Bass Model of Holistic Reflection. A survey was conducted to identify the professional development needs of educators in relation to the implementation of the Bass Model. Survey results informed the development of a workshop and reflective practice toolkit (the intervention). A focus group was conducted one month after the last workshop. This study revealed the importance of adequate preparation and ongoing support of educators, including specific skills required to facilitate students’ development of reflective capacity. Study 4. Development of a tool to measure holistic reflection in midwifery students and midwives. This tool was designed to assess the development of holistic reflection in midwifery students and midwives. The draft tool was developed using a staged approach and administered in a cross-sectional survey with 187 participants. Testing revealed the tool was reliable, stable, and valid, and assisted in measuring aspects of critical reflection, reflective practice, and reflexivity in midwifery students and midwives. Conclusion Overall, this PhD program of work made an important contribution to understanding reflective pedagogy, including the factors that facilitate development and assessment of holistic reflective practice. This adds to the body of knowledge regarding holistic reflection as a tool to promote transformative learning and practice.

Abstract:
This study has designed a theoretical mapping of complex element relationships within the field of physical security. The main purpose of the mapping is to form individual knowledge structures for modelling and provide a relative understanding of overall risk based on different combinations of physical security arrangements. An understanding of overall risk for modelling purposes should lead to improvements in providing support for decision making within this field. The final series of knowledge structures in this study have been represented by value matrices for element pair assessments within the topic of physical security. The values that have been presented in the knowledge matrices have been gathered from expert opinion and converted to numerical data as a demonstration for a holistic approach to modelling physical security elements. A profile for each respondent and each category group has been developed to be compared for their degree of similarity with other profiles. A correlation technique provides an indication of the degree of consensus within the results.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Nursing)
Man is a bio-psycho-social-spiritual being, and his needs are informed by all these elements. The need for spiritual care in nursing education and practice is no longer a new concept in developed countries, nor even in some developing countries. However, in Nigeria, there is no consistent evidence of how spirituality is taught within the nursing curriculum nor how it is practised. The literature review also confirms that no existing set of rules or models for integrating spiritual care into the curriculum of nursing exists in the country. If nursing care is to be holistic, concerted attention must be paid to spiritual care, and to the training of nurses so that they can provide spiritual care within the context of holistic care for patients in the healthcare system. The main purpose of this academic work was to develop a model for the integration of spiritual care-giving into the nursing curriculum. This cross-sectional study used adapted modified Intervention Mapping (IM) strategies with a mixed method approach, to collect in-depth information.

Abstract:
Doutoramento em Marketing e Estratégia
Online travel shopping has attracted researchers due to its significant growth and there is a growing body of literature in this field. However, research on what drives consumers to purchase travel online has typically been fragmented. In fact, existing studies have largely concentrated on examining consumers’ online travel purchases either grounded on Davis’s Technology Acceptance Model, on the Theory of Reasoned Action and its extension, the Theory of Planned Behaviour or on Roger’s model of perceived innovation attributes, the Innovation Diffusion Theory. A thorough literature review has revealed that there is a lack of studies that integrate all theories to better understand online travel shopping. Therefore, based on relevant literature in tourism and consumer behaviour, this study proposes and tests an integrated model to explore which factors affect intentions to purchase travel online. Furthermore, it proposes a new construct, termed social media involvement, defined as a person’s level of interest or emotional attachment with social media, and examines its relationship with intentions to purchase travel online. To test the 18 hypotheses, a quantitative approach was followed by first collecting data through an online survey. With a sample of 1,532 Worldwide Internet users, Partial Least Squares analysis was than conducted to assess the validity and reliability of the data and empirically test the hypothesized relationships between the constructs. The results indicate that intentions to purchase travel online is mostly determined by attitude towards online shopping, which is influenced by perceived relative advantages of online travel shopping and trust in online travel shopping. In addition, the findings indicate that the second most important predictor of intentions to purchase travel online is compatibility, an attribute from the Innovation Diffusion Theory. Furthermore, even though online shopping is nowadays a common practice, perceived risk continues to negatively affect intentions to purchase travel online. The most surprising finding of this study was that Internet users more involved with social media for travel purposes did not have higher intentions to purchase travel online. The theoretical contributions of this study and the practical implications are discussed and future research directions are detailed.

Wei, Fang. "The Explanatory Autonomy of the Biological Sciences." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/16855.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to argue for the explanatory autonomy of the biological sciences. According to many philosophers and scientists, the biological sciences do not have their own explanatory autonomy because they either can be reduced to other “hard” sciences such as physics and chemistry, or cannot really explain phenomena since they do not have laws of nature. To maintain the explanatory autonomy of the biological sciences, I first argue against one influential form of reductionism, i.e., explanatory reductionism, by showing that explanation in the biological sciences can be achieved without reduction. Then, I demonstrate that the biological sciences do not have laws of nature. Instead, I suggest that it is usually biological models that do the explanatory work. Given the fact that biological models usually do the explanatory work, we still need a story of how biological models can be explanatory. However, to understand how a biological model can explain phenomena in the world, we first need to understand what the model-world relationship is. To this end, a holistic view of the model-world relationship is developed by looking closely at scientific practice. Based on this, a holistic account of model explanation is proposed. The basic idea behind the holistic account of model explanation is that, for a model to be explanatory, it must answer two kinds of questions: counterfactual dependence questions (corresponding to Woodward’s what-if-things-had-been-different questions, “w-questions” for short) that concern the model itself, and hypothetical questions that concern the relationship between the model and its target system. Furthermore, I suggest that the reason a biological model can answer these two kinds of questions is due to the fact that: (a) a model is a structure, that is, a set of dependence relationships that can be employed to answer w-questions, and that (b) the holistic fit between the model and its target warrants the hypothetical inference from the model to its target and thus helps to answer the second kind of question.

Abstract:
Background: There is an increasing amount of arguments made that new business models are the solution when companies and industries face radical changes in the environment. To be able to prosper in the long run, organizations must reinvent themselves over and over again. Many authors (e.g. Abernathy & Utterback, 1978; Christensen, 1997; Kim & Mauborgne, 2005; Ries, 2011) claim that big, radical, reconfigurations are needed in order to prosper in the long-term. Theories, concepts and framework have been developed to answer how this reconfiguration should happen within organizations. However, the concepts derived are just parts of the solution, and none take a holistic approach, trying to cover them in a practical framework that could be used by organizations. Aim: The aim of the thesis is to propose a framework that enables organizations to systemize their innovation processes, making them flexible enough to repetitively seize opportunities through business model innovation where new value can be created and captured. The proposed framework aims to enable organizations to start discussing how they should create and capture new value and give them a more pragmatic view on the innovation process. It also aims to act as a starting point for future research. Methodology: The thesis follows March & Smith’s (1995) design science methodology in order to build and evaluate the framework. This is done in three steps; first by building a model from theory. Second, the emergence of business models in three different case companies are compared and investigated qualitatively. Lastly the model and the factors derived from the data are contrasted and a framework is built and evaluated. Findings & Conclusion: The basis of the derived framework proposes for big steps to change, and create and capture new value; analyze the basis of competition in the macro and micro environment, analyze and experiment with different non-customer tiers, experiment with the creation of value and experiment and analyze the capture of the value created. More tangible tools are proposed for each of these steps. Actually testing the framework and further evaluating and theorizing of the framework is proposed as future research directions.

Lee, Hwa Jong. "Archaeological resource management in South Korea : developing a holistic management planning model for buried archaeological sites." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10046267/.

Full text
Abstract:
As the standard of living rose in South Korea a wider range of people became interested in archaeological heritage and its management. Specifically, since the 1990s, rescue archaeology became an issue of wider social concern: there was a paradigm shift from simply the protection of archaeological sites, under pressure from development, to the use of sites as a social resource. This transformation presented a number of challenges regarding unexcavated archaeological sites in the planning process, decision-making on preservation in-situ (as opposed to ‘preservation by record’), and the nature of display or reburial. This research aimed to develop a management planning model to face these challenges. The research focused on archaeological sites, partly because of their ability to engage social issues in contemporary South Korea, and partly because of the complexity of managing the resource, due to the ‘invisibility’ of unexcavated archaeology and the often fragile nature of the remains. In order to build this model, the research explored international theories and approaches, and set these within the context of South Korean Archaeological Resource Management, to produce an intellectual framework. The research explores four broad topics – who, why, what, and how – through complex issues such as identity, ownership, participation, assessment, conservation/protection, interpretation and presentation. The model involves principles for management (including participatory planning, transparent assessment of values, and defined management strategies). This leads to a road map for planning: Stage 1 (Identifying) explores activities such as team building, documentation and vision, under the principle of participatory planning; Stage 2 (Assessment) approaches the assessment of values and significance, and the role of decision-making and governance, using principles of transparency; Stage 3 (Responding) develops approaches to creating management strategies, specific to time and spatial scales; and Stage 4 (Reviewing and Revision) investigates the processes of monitoring and review, within a flexible framework.

Abstract:
Increasing global competition, market uncertainties and high product variance are a few of the factors posing challenges to the existing manufacturing industry. Having a quick response to market fluctuations and adapting to changing customer demands while maintaining shorter lead times and low costs are a few of the major challenges. The main focus of this thesis is on Evolvable Production Systems, which is one of the promising solutions to deal with the emerging manufacturing challenges by changing the conventional manufacturing systems towards a more flexible, intelligent and adaptable approach. Although promising, further research is needed in several directions for a wider industrial acceptance of EPS. The directions include but are not limited to methodological aspects, tool support, etc. throughout the development lifecycle. This thesis aims to provide a basis for a holistic model-based development methodology for evolvable production systems. One of the main contributionsof this work is the identification of major architectural elements (i.e stakeholders, concerns, viewpoints and views) and their dependencies on each other. This work shall serve as a basis for establishing a well-defined architectural framework for EPS. The second important contribution of this thesis is the development of a domain specific modeling language (EPS- DSL) based on the existing EPS ontology. The DSM platform does not only store the domain knowledge in the form of models but also provides support for the re-use of these models, i.e. enables utilization of the domain ontology during system development. Moreover, the automatic code generation support for the module library presented in this work, significantly reduces the risks of information discrepancies when transferring data from one abstraction level to another. The existing EPS ontology is also evaluated from a holistic perspective and resulted in contributing a few improvement suggestions for achieving a seamless model-based development approach. Evaluation of Simulink/SimEvents as a modeling and simulation tool for EPS is the third main contribution of this thesis. One of the main advantages of evaluating this tool for EPS is the opportunity to analyze the complete system behavior on a single modeling platform. The integration of agent-based system behavior (discrete event) with dynamic system behavior (continuous & discrete time) provides a holistic modeling approach and implies less information inconsistencies.
