Abstract:
The winter spawning aggregations of hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae) off the Westland coast, South Island, support New Zealand s largest trawl fishery. The distribution and abundance of hoki eggs, larvae, and adults from ichthyoplankton and acoustic surveys made during the period 1978-1993 were used to describe the location and timing of hoki spawning off Westland. Hoki spawned primarily in south Westland, around Hokitika Canyon, and south along the outer shelf and slope to Cook Canyon, although spawning biomass appeared to increase in north Westland later in the season. Older stage hoki larvae occurred shoreward of eggs and newly hatched larvae, suggesting onshore advection. The data were used to designate spatial and temporal egg sampling strata that significantly increased egg abundance estimate precision. The egg data were used to estimate annual egg production and, combined with data on fecundity and recruited proportion spawning, to estimate virgin biomass. The historical biomass estimate (1.48 million tonnes, CV = 29.4%) was probably biased down because the plankton tows were too shallow. It appears that a future egg production survey, using appropriate plankton sampling depths, could provide a biomass estimate of Westland spawning hoki sufficiently accurate and precise for management purposes.

Abstract:
Abstract Eleven acoustic surveys carried out between 1991 and 2002 provided estimates of the relative abundance of spawning hoki in Cook Strait, New Zealand. The precision and bias of each survey were estimated using a new Monte Carlo simulation method, which combined uncertainties associated with survey timing, sampling error, detectability, species composition, target strength, calibration coefficients, and missing strata. Because hoki have a long spawning season (more than 2 months) with turnover of fish in the survey area, survey timing was the most important source of uncertainty. Uncertainty was reduced by having a number of sub-surveys (snapshots) over a 4–6 week period, centred on the middle date of the spawning season. The other major source of uncertainty was the occurrence of 40–70% of hoki in mixed species: “hoki fuzz” marks. The acoustic analysis assumed all acoustic backscatter from hoki marks was hoki, so the presence of other species caused a positive bias in relative-abundance indices. The magnitude of this bias differed between years because the proportion of hoki in the “fuzz” marks was variable. There was additional uncertainty from the variability in the species composition of mixed marks that affected survey precision. The abundance indices were corrected for estimated bias, and the estimate of precision, expressed as the coefficient of variation or c.v., was applied to weight the results from each acoustic survey in the assessment model used to set commercial-catch limits.

Abstract:
The composition and properties of collagen in teleost (bony fish) cartilage have never been studied. In this study, we aimed to identify and characterise all collagen species in the nasal cartilage of hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae). Four native collagen species were extracted using two techniques, and isolated with differential salt precipitation. We were able to assign the identity of three of these collagen species on the basis of solubility, SDS-PAGE and amino acid analyses. We found that hoki cartilage contains the major collagen, type II, and the minor collagens, type IX and type XI, which are homologous to those found in mammal and chicken cartilage. Using these extraction protocols, we also isolated a full-length type IX collagen from cartilage for the first time. In addition, we detected a 90 kDa, highly glycosylated collagen that has not been identified in any other species. For each isolate, structural and biochemical characterisations were performed using circular dichroism and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses, and the thermal denaturation properties were determined. Our results showed that the properties of hoki cartilage-derived collagens are similar to those of collagens in mammalian cartilage, indicating that teleost cartilage could provide biological ingredients for the development of biomaterials to treat cartilage-related illnesses.

Abstract:
Abstract In some fisheries large factory freezer trawlers have periods of down time as the catch is processed. By utilizing this time, scientific acoustic surveys can be carried out between commercial-fishing operations without compromising fishing success. Examples are presented from three acoustic surveys for hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae) in New Zealand waters during 2002 and 2003 conducted from a commercial vessel fitted with a scientifically calibrated SIMRAD ES-60 echosounder. These surveys confirmed the presence of a new spawning area for hoki and provided biomass estimates from known fishing grounds. The approach described works well for small-scale acoustic surveys adjacent to areas of high catch rates and is cost-effective because the vessel “pays for itself” by fishing commercially. The major limitation is that the boundaries of the survey area are determined by the time available during processing, which is related to the size of the catch and the time required to search for a suitable location for the next commercial trawl. In the New Zealand hoki surveys, processing time was typically 3–8 h, which was sufficient to carry out about 10–70 km of acoustic transects. Acoustic research was also limited to periods of relatively good conditions by the use of a hull-mounted transducer.

This review offers a critique of Farhad Dalal’s article in this issue, an article which is based on his keynote address to the 2013 NZAP Conference. In this review article, I offer an appreciation for Farhad’s contribution, but also propose an alternative understanding of ethical discrimination. I suggest that psychotherapy is the child of Romanticism, in which it is axiomatic that intelligent empathy is better than observational rationality, and that equity is better than equality. The suffering of the oppressed is indeed privileged. The social, political, and therapeutic consequences of this shift in emphasis are significant, particularly for indigenous aspirations and the development of bicultural partnerships. Abstract:
The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) Halyomorpha halys (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is an invasive pest in North America and Europe that damages many plant species and invades human dwellings. It is regularly intercepted at Aotearoa/New Zealand’s borders but is not yet known to have established. Māori are partners in New Zealand’s biosecurity community and an understanding of the potential impact of any invasive alien species to their interests is essential. The known impacts of BMSB in published literature were reviewed with a focus on Māori plant taonga (valued or treasured plant species) in: (1) Māori commercial enterprises; (2) mara kai (food gardens); and (3) the natural estate. Many fruit and some vegetable species are likely to be affected by BMSB in commercial and non-commercial Māori horticulture but the impact of BMSB on indigenous/native and other taonga plant species in mara kai and the native estate is difficult to evaluate. BMSB poses a serious economic threat to some crop species of commercial value to Māori, as well as threat to some native taonga species. A kaupapa Māori approach examining unpublished mātauranga (knowledge) would considerably broaden this understanding. Abstract:
Abstract Western – and Northern – psychology and psychotherapy stand accused of an over emphasis on the individual, ego, and self (“the Self”), autonomy, and self-development. These criticisms have been made from other intellectual, cultural, social, spiritual and wisdom traditions, but may also be found in critical and radical traditions within Western thought. In this article, exponents of ten different theoretical orientations within or modalities of psychotherapy reflect on one or two key aspects of their respective theories which, together, offer a holistic conception of the person; account for family/social/cultural context; provide an understanding of the human trend to homonomy (or belonging) alongside autonomy; articulate a relational understanding of human development, attachment to and engagement with others; and emphasise spirit, group, and community. As such, these psychotherapies – and critiques of Western psychotherapy – offer a wider vision of the scope and practice of psychotherapy and its relevance in and to Aotearoa New Zealand. Abstract:
Abstract A model-based method has been developed for partitioning acoustic backscatter from mixed-species marks. This method uses catch-composition data to partition the echo integral, but allows for differences in trawl catchability and acoustic vulnerability between species. It was applied to estimate the biomass of New Zealand hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae) from trawl and acoustic surveys on the Chatham Rise and Campbell Plateau in 2001. Mixed-species layers containing up to 20 different species were present in both survey areas. A total of 224 bottom-trawl surveys (123 on Chatham Rise and 101 on Campbell Plateau) were carried out to determine the species composition and relative densities. Simultaneous acoustic recordings made during each of these trawls were used to estimate vulnerability ratios for the two methods, i.e. acoustic as opposed to trawl surveys, (acoustic:trawl) by non-negative, least-squares minimization. The best-fit model for each survey attributed 14–22% of the backscatter in mixed layers within 10 m of the bottom to hoki. This produced hoki biomass estimates 1.3–1.8 times higher than the standard approach, which divides the echo integral in proportion to the catch assuming equal trawl catchability. The precision of the estimated acoustic:trawl vulnerability ratios depended on the contrast in trawl catch composition, and the ratios for the same species differed between areas. A major problem on the Chatham Rise was the acoustic contribution of small mesopelagic species, which are not caught by the bottom trawl. Despite these difficulties, the model-based approach has good potential for determining the biomass of the target species in a mixed-species mark when the different species cannot be discriminated acoustically.

Abstract:
The bi-directional impacts of an individual’s psychotherapy on their partner and of the partner and their relationship on the therapy should be a consideration throughout treatment. There is a bias in the literature towards either an individual or a couples approach to therapy, but only scattered mention of working with a blend of the two. This article considers how, during the process of change in individual therapy, new problems might arise in a client’s romantic relationship. Furthermore, the client’s significant other might resist or otherwise hamper their partner’s therapy if they do not accept or understand the changes that are taking place. Finally, some ethical arguments are raised which add to the case that psychotherapists should not ignore the impact that psychotherapy has on their client’s relationships and vice versa. Abstract:
ABSTRACT Accurately determining the age of H ii regions and the stars they host is as important as it is challenging. Historically, the most popular method has been isochrone fitting to Hertzsprung–Russell diagrams or colour–magnitude diagrams. Here, we introduce a different method for age determination using BPASS (Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis) and hoki . We infer the most likely ages of the regions D118 and D119 NGC 300 to be log(age/yr) = $6.86^{+0.05}_{-0.06}$ and we also deduce stellar mass and number counts by comparison with the BPASS models. We compare how our binary and single-star models perform and find that the latter are unable to predict 20 per cent (±10 per cent) of our sample. We also discuss how results obtained from isochrone fitting would differ. We conclude that ages could be underestimated by ∼0.2 dex and that the limitations of the isochrone method is not solely due to the lack of binary stars. We propose that the method presented here is more reliable and more widely applicable since it can be used on smaller samples. Alongside this study, we release new hoki features to allow easy implementation of this method.

Abstract:
In the bicultural context of Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori (people of the land) and Tauiwi (the other tribe, i.e. Pākehā and other non-indigenous New Zealanders), continue to be represented in binary opposition to each other. This has real consequences for the way in which health practitioners think about and respond to Māori. Reflecting on ideas explored in my PhD thesis, I suggest that Māori identity is much more complex than popular representations of Māori subjectivity allow. In this article I offer an alternative narrative on the social construction of Māori identity by contesting the idea of a singular, quintessential subjectivity by uncovering the other face/s subjugated beneath biculturalism’s preferred subjects. Waitara Mai i te horopaki iwirua o Aotearoa, arā te Māori (tangata whenua) me Tauiwi (iwi kē, arā Pākehā me ētahi atu iwi ehara nō Niu Tīreni), e mau tonu ana te here mauwehe rāua ki a rāua anō. Abstract:
While references to the Treaty of Waitangi and/or biculturalism are an accepted part of the New Zealand education policy landscape, there is often a lack of consensus around the meaning, and therefore the practice implications, of the term ‘biculturalism’. This difficulty can be explained by viewing biculturalism as an ideology that has continued to evolve since its emergence in the 1980s. In policy texts older understandings of the term are overlaid with more recent understandings and can contribute to uncertainty about what the term means to teachers in 2015. This is particularly challenging for teachers and school leaders as they attempt to negotiate the requirements of the Practising Teacher Criteria. This suggests that there is a need to continue engaging in discussion about the meaning of biculturalism in education in the present, looking forward, but informed by the past.
