Abstract:
Abstract Since its discovery by Hitchin in 1987, G-Hitchin systems for a reductive complex Lie group G have extensively been studied. For example, the generic fibers are nowadays well-understood. In this paper, we show that the smooth parts of G-Hitchin systems for a simple adjoint complex Lie group G are isomorphic to non-compact Calabi–Yau integrable systems extending results by Diaconescu–Donagi–Pantev. Moreover, we explain how Langlands duality for Hitchin systems is related to Poincaré–Verdier duality of the corresponding families of quasi-projective Calabi–Yau threefolds. Even though the statement is holomorphic-symplectic, our proof is Hodge-theoretic. It is based on polarizable variations of Hodge structures that admit so-called abstract Seiberg–Witten differentials. These ensure that the associated Jacobian fibration is an algebraic integrable system.

Abstract:
In this paper we continue our studies of Hitchin systems on singular curves (started in [1]). We consider a rather general class of curves which can be obtained from the projective line by gluing two subschemes together (i.e. their affine part is: Spec {f ∈ ℂ[z] : f(A(∊)) = f(B(∊)); ∊N = 0}, where A(∊), B(∊) are arbitrary polynomials). The most simple examples are the generalized cusp curves which are projectivizations of Spec {f ∈ ℂ[z] : f′(0) = f″(0) = ⋯ fN-1(0) = 0}. We describe the geometry of such curves; in particular we calculate their genus (for some curves the calculation appears to be related with the iteration of polynomials A(∊), B(∊) defining the subschemes). We obtain the explicit description of moduli space of vector bundles, the dualizing sheaf, Higgs field and other ingredients of the Hitchin integrable systems; these results may deserve the independent interest. We prove the integrability of Hitchin systems on such curves. To do this we develop r-matrix formalism for the functions on the truncated loop group GLn(ℂ[z]), zN = 0. We also show how to obtain the Hitchin integrable systems on such curves as hamiltonian reduction from the more simple system on some finite-dimensional space.

Abstract:
Considering a compact Riemann surface of genus greater or equal than two, a Higgs bundle is a pair composed of a holomorphic bundle over the Riemann surface, joint with an auxiliar vector field, so-called Higgs field. This theory started around thirty years ago, with Hitchin’s work, when he reduced the self-duality equations from dimension four to dimension two, and so, studied those equations over Riemann surfaces. Hitchin baptized those fields as Higgs fields because in the context of physics and gauge theory, they describe similar particles to those described by the Higgs bosson. Later, Simpson used the name Higgs bundle for a holomorphic bundle together with a Higgs field. Today, Higgs bundles are the subject of research in several areas such as non-abelian Hodge theory, Langlands, mirror symmetry, integrable systems, quantum field theory (QFT), among others. The main purposes here are to introduce these objects, and to present a brief but complete construction of the moduli space of Higgs bundles.

Abstract We propose, via the Atiyah–Manton approximation, a framework for studying skyrmions on R 3 using Atiyah–Drinfeld–Hitchin–Manin (ADHM) data for Yang–Mills instantons on R 4 . We provide a dictionary between important concepts in the Skyrme model and analogous ideas for ADHM data, and describe an efficient process for obtaining approximate Skyrme fields directly from ADHM data. We show that the approximation successfully describes all known skyrmions with charge B ⩽ 8 , with energies reproduced within 2% of the true minimisers. We also develop factorisation methods for studying clusters of instantons and skyrmions, generalising early work by Christ–Stanton–Weinberg, and describe some relatively large families of explicit ADHM data. These tools provide a unified framework for describing coalesced highly-symmetric configurations as well as skyrmion clusters, both of which are needed to study nuclear systems in the Skyrme model.

Geometric performance parameters of three-point hitch system of a most sold model of a 2-wheel drive Indian tractor were determined by generating the path of upper and lower hitch points by kinematic linkage analysis. At various locations of pivot point of upper link and adjustments in the length of lift rods, hitch linkage system of the tractor fulfilled all the requirements specified by the standards for category-I and II hitches. An insight into the kinematic linkage analysis revealed that the hitch linkage of the selected tractor is the most suitable for operations with soil working implements. Attachment of upper link to the topmost pivot point reduced the change in orientation of implement during lifting and ensured better weight transfer from implement to the rear axle of tractor. The kinematic linkage analysis has the potential to identify the best settings of the hitch linkage system for the effective utilization of tractor power during various farm operations.

Study of carbon dioxide emissions in different types of peatlands use in Central and West Kalimantan has been conducted in January-June 2006 and January-April 2007. The study represents 4 types of land use in Central Kalimantan as treatment: 5 years for chinesse cabbage, 10 years for chinesse cabbage, 5 years for sweet corns, and 10 years for sweet corns. As for the treatments in West Kalimantan, they include corn field, Aloe vera field, oil palm plantation, and rubber plantation. Carbon dioxide was measured using infrared gas analysis (model EGM-4, PP systems, Hitchin, UK). In Central Kalimantan, the highest CO2 is emitted from sweet corn plants (arable land for 10 years) by 0.79 g CO2/m2/hour, chinesse cabbage plants (for 5 years) by 0.73 g CO2/m2/hour, chinesse cabbage plants (for 10 years) by 0.67 g CO2/m2/hour and, the least, sweet corn plants (for 5 years) by 0.41 g CO2/m2/hour. The highest CO2 emission from West Kalimantan is released from rubber plants at 1.22 g CO2/m2/hour, followed by palm oil plants by 0.96 g CO2/m2/hour, Aloe vera plants by 0.68 g CO2/m2/hour and corn plants by 0.35 g CO2/m2/hour. Groundwater table depth are the most important factors among other factors that influence CO2 emissions. Groundwater table depth indicated a positive correlation with CO2 emissions in all types of peatlands use. C-organic production of sweet corn plants at 11.66 t C/ha/year is higher than that of chinesse cabbage plants at 1.64 t C/ha /year. Corn plants produce organic-C was 11.66 t C/ha/year, equivalent to the amount of loss of C through CO2 emissions by 11.29 t C/ha/year.Keywords: peat, types of land use, carbon, CO2 emission

Tree climbing techniques for arboriculture are becoming more and more popular, but like any work activity, there are risks for the operator. The PPE (personal protective equipment) and protective systems studied here include semi-static ropes and friction hitches. The work rope/friction hitch system is a combination that many operators rely on, but unlike current mechanical rope clamps and descenders, they do not have European certifications. For this reason, tensile tests were carried out using a traction bench on rope/knot systems. Two rope models and two types of knots were used to stress the systems and materials as much as possible, so as to observe the resulting ratios. A total of 36 tests were carried out in which measurements were taken, including applied load in traction, knot creep, and rope diameter changes. Several results were obtained, including a maximum load of 18.7 kN, a maximum slip of 9.6 cm and a maximum diameter variation of 3 mm. This work represents a preliminary investigation for verifying the relationship between work ropes and friction knots. Relationships among the variables were observed; differences emerged mainly as a function of the type of knot used rather than the type of rope used. The data obtained is also important for applications towards improving preventative safety measures.

Abstract:
Currently, remarkable gaps of operational, social and environmental efficiency and overall sub-optimization of the logistics and mobility systems exist in urban areas. There is then the need to promote and assess innovative transport solutions and policy-making within SUMPs (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans) to deal with such critical issues in order to improve urban sustainability. The paper focuses on the case study of the Venice Lagoon, where islands—despite representing a relevant feature of urban planning—face a tremendous lack of accessibility, depopulation, social cohesion and they turn out to be poorly connected. By developing an original scenario-building methodological framework and performing data collection activities, the purpose of the paper consists of assessing the feasibility of a mixed passenger and freight transport system —sometimes called cargo hitching. Mixed passenger and freight systems/cargo hitching are considered as an innovative framework based on the integration of freight and passenger urban systems and resources to optimize the existing transport capacity, and thus, urban sustainability. Results show that the overall existing urban transport capacity can accommodate urban freight flows on main connections in the Lagoon. The reduction in spare public transport capacity, as well as in the number (and type) of circulating freight boats show—in various scenarios—the degree of optimization of the resulting urban network configuration and the positive impacts on urban sustainability. This paves the way for the regulatory framework to adopt proposed solutions.

AbstractIn 1948, the RAND Corporation, formed to connect military planning with research and development decisions, became an independent nonprofit organization. Before then, cost-effectiveness analysis, benefit-cost analysis, and systems analysis had no established home in the federal government. In the 1950s, under the leadership of Charles Hitch, Chief, RAND Economics, undertook a program of activities they called “systems analysis,” including evaluation of the costs and effectiveness of weapon systems. In 1961, Robert McNamara appointed Hitch to be the Comptroller of the Department of Defense and invited Hitch to carry out his vision he described as “Programming and Systems Analysis.” Programming became the Planning, Programming, Budgeting System (PPBS) and the Five-Year Defense Program that linked strategies to forces to budgets. Systems Analysis assisted the Secretary to make choices of weapon systems and strategies. In 1965, Hitch returned to California and ultimately became President of the university. McNamara wanted Systems Analysis to report directly to him, and on his recommendation, President Lyndon Johnson appointed me Assistant Secretary for Systems Analysis. In 1966, the President directed that all departments in the executive branch establish offices based on the Systems Analysis model. In 1967, Henry S. Rowen became President of the RAND Corporation. He broadened RAND’s scope beyond the military to include Health Services, education, urban problems including homelessness, ethics in scientific research, and climate research. In 1970, Rowen led the establishment of the Pardee RAND Graduate School, offering a doctoral degree in Public Policy Analysis to extend widely the application of the RAND Systems Analysis approach to many fields.
