Skiperskih, Aleksandr. "Closed universes" of Resistance: searches in the space of Russian culture. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1818427.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph represents the author's long-term observations on the life of chronotopes of Russian culture. From the author's point of view, chronotopes are initially present in a special field of opposites, complementary values, which only dramatizes the self-identification of the subject of resistance in the fascinating and dark worlds of "closed universes" opening before him. The life of culture, as well as the life of its individual carrier, who creates the text of resistance, seems to be a kind of journey through certain stations - chronotopes. He can find his reader among those who are trying to catch the mysterious morphology of Russian culture and the characters buried in it.

Os'muhina, Ol'ga, Marina Urtminceva, and russkoy kafedra. The tradition of the author's mask in Russian prose of the XVIII-XIX centuries. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1911018.

Full text
Abstract:
The author's mask is one of the most important signs of literary consciousness from antiquity to the present, it becomes a synthesis of the author's self-expression and his transformation from a "real" figure into an artistic image functioning within the text space. The monograph examines the author's mask as one of the most important elements of the author's strategy. Russian Russian authors comprehend the place of the author's mask in the structure of the author's consciousness in the process of the formation of the institution of authorship, and also study the tradition of using the author's mask in the general context of the history of Russian literature of the XX century. based on the material of Russian prose of the XVIII-XIX centuries: M. Chulkov, V. Senkovsky, I. Krylov, A. Pushkin, N. Gogol, V. Odoevsky, V. Dahl. For the first time, the study of the process of author's self-identification and the category of the mask as a false author's identification, the nature and forms of its functioning expands ideas about the operation of the identification mechanism and about identity problems in general. For a wide range of readers interested in Russian fiction. It can be useful for students, postgraduates and teachers of philological universities and faculties.

Abstract:
This chapter presents the complex and diverse nature of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on a global scale, as well as a global epidemiology of HIV. The hardest-hit region of the world is sub-Saharan Africa, where heterosexual transmission dominates. Here the overall rate of new HIV infections has decreased in 25 countries by 50% between 2001 and 2011, coupled with scale-up of antiretroviral therapy and prevention of mother-to-child transmission. The Asia-Pacific region has the second highest burden of HIV in the world and, despite a decline in the annual number of new infections, is also seeing increasing HIV prevalence in high-risk groups. In Europe there is a clear division between the epidemics in eastern and western countries. Although antiretroviral therapy has led to great advances in health in this region, late identification of illness and barriers to care for stigmatized populations are a ubiquitous problem in the European Union. In the United States, despite reasonably good access to care, the incidence of HIV has not declined significantly since the advent of effective treatment. Substantial efforts and new strategies in the United States and the Americas have been developed to meet the goals of prevention and care engagement. The chapter also identifies the work needed to address the nuanced challenges to HIV prevention and treatment in different subpopulations across the world.

Ballal, Salma, and Ian A. Greer. Thromboembolic disorders in pregnancy. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198713333.003.0037.

Full text
Abstract:
Thromboembolism in pregnancy remains a major cause of direct maternal mortality in the Western world. Thromboembolic events in pregnancy are spread across the three trimesters but the puerperium is the time of greatest risk with a relative risk of around 20-fold compared to the non-pregnant patient. When compared to the non-pregnant population where distal deep vein thrombosis is most common, most events in pregnancy are iliofemoral and left sided. Given the multi-hit nature of the problem, awareness of risk factors is important. The two most significant single risk factors in pregnancy for thromboembolism are history of previous venous thromboembolism and thrombophilia. The identification of risk factors will guide the use of thromboprophylaxis and assist diagnosis; however, objective diagnosis is required. Prophylaxis and treatment focuses on low-molecular-weight heparin, which is considered safe in pregnancy.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a bidirectional relationship between depression and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Patients with comorbid depression and T2D are at high risk of complications and premature mortality. Conventional treatments for depression do not consistently improve diabetes outcomes, despite improving depressive symptoms. Shared mechanisms may underpin both depression and T2D, providing novel pharmacological targets to treat both conditions simultaneously. There are several candidate pathways. For inflammation and vitamin D deficiency, there is good cross-sectional evidence to support an association with depression in T2D. Prospective epidemiological studies are needed to test biological pathways as predictive biomarkers of depression and T2D. Intervention studies are needed to test the modifiability of these pathways. Repurposing of established diabetes treatments may provide a ‘multiple hit’ strategy. The identification and modification of novel biological targets has the potential to treat both depression and T2D, as well as reducing longer term morbidity and mortality.

Turner, Peter. The Blair Witch Project. Liverpool University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781906733841.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Few films have had the influence and impact of The Blair Witch Project (1999). Its arrival was a horror cinema palette cleanser after a decade of serial killers and postmodern intertextuality, a bare bones ‘found footage’ trendsetter. The Blair Witch Project was the tenth biggest box office earner of 1999. Even with strong competition in the horror genre, the film managed to stand out from the rest. It was arguably a product of its time more than any other film of the 1990s, heralding the advent of digital filmmaking. Backed up by an internet marketing campaign, The Blair Witch Project became a glowing example of what could be achieved with cheap emerging technology, imagination, and a ‘less is more’ approach. By the year 2000, and due to the influx of digital video cameras, there were far more independent features being made than ever before. This book explores the aesthetics of The Blair Witch Project, how identification is encouraged in the film, and the way it successfully creates fear in contemporary audiences. The book tells the story of the film from his conception and production, and then provides a unique analysis of the techniques used, their appeal to audiences and the themes that helped make the film such an international hit, including the pioneering internet marketing.

Thoreau, Henry David. Walden. Edited by Stephen Allen Fender. Oxford University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199538065.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
‘The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.’ In 1845 Henry David Thoreau left his home town of Concord, Massachusetts to begin a new life alone, in a rough hut he built himself a mile and a half away on the north-west shore of Walden Pond. Walden is Thoreau’s classic autobiographical account of this experiment in solitary living, his refusal to play by the rules of hard work and the accumulation of wealth and above all the freedom it gave him to adapt his living to the natural world around him. This new edition of Walden traces the sources of Thoreau’s reading and thinking and considers the author in the context of his birthplace and his sense of its history - social, economic and natural. In addition, an ecological appendix provides modern identifications of the myriad plants and animals to which Thoreau gave increasingly close attention as he became acclimatized to his life in the woods by Walden Pond.

Abstract:
Mahler’s music offers the opportunity for an enrichment of the unilateral identity paradigm in musicological research through the concept of cultural and aesthetic hybridity. This chapter addresses the plurality of idioms, styles, and voices in Gustav Mahler’s music in the context of the cultural and linguistic heterogeneity which characterises Vienna at the turn of the century. Analytical categories are proposed that are able to serve the plurality and hybridity in Mahler’s music; relevant passages in his work are discussed according to these categories: 1. tragic breakdown (of the musical subject); 2. grotesque destabilisation; 3. alienated sound; 4. plurality of voices; 5. metamorphosis and mimesis; 6. thematic instability; 7. hybridity of genres and forms; 8. eclipses of the author

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter traces the development of Leibniz’s thought on form as the principle of activity of bodies, from his earliest thoughts on motion as interrupted by rests, through his neo-Hobbesian theory of endeavour as the foundation of continuity, to his rejection of this and a return to a variant occasionalist account, “transcreation”, and finally to his introduction of force as the foundation of continuity. It is explained in the chapter how the Principle of Equipollence functions as Leibniz’s Ariadnean thread leading him to his philosophy of force, and how the identification of causes breaks the equivalence of hypotheses regarding motion.
