Murdoch, Steven W. "Scotland, Denmark-Norway and the House of Stuart 1603-1660 : a diplomatic and military analysis." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.265379.

Abstract:
This thesis redresses the belief that there was little or no diplomatic or political relationship between Scotland and Denmark-Norway from the start of the British reign of James VI and I in 1603 to the Restoration of Charles II in 1660. In fact the sixteenth century relationship with Scotland continued to develop into the reign of Charles II. By examining the identity of Charles I and the evolving 'British' state, Scotland and her foreign relations are placed in a clear context. Previously prominent Stuart diplomats, like Sir Robert Anstruther, Sir James Spen or Sir Andrew Sinclair have been known as English diplomats rather than Scottish or British and were presumed to be working for the benefit of England rather than Scotland or even greater 'Britain'. Although Scotland and England usually shared both a single monarch and a common corps diplomatique, between 1603-1660 Scottish and English foreign policy frequently differed. In addition the polices of the House of Stuart frequently clashed with the agendas of the two British parliaments and of Denmark-Norway. Despite binding alliances with Christian IV in 1618, 1621 and 1625, Charles I and the English state adopted a policy of war against France and Spain which meant that Christian IV had to rely on Scotland for military support during his war against the Habsburg empire. Nearly 14,000 Scots went to the aid of the Danish king. This Scottish policy of military intervention continued between 1625-1660 and is here statistically evaluated in comparison to the involvement of England and Ireland in Denmark-Norway. When Charles I's policies threatened the independence of the Scottish nation in the 1630s and the integrity of the English Parliament in the 1640s, Christian IV found himself courted by all sides. Denmark-Norway's position at the gateway to the Baltic ensured the diplomatic and military attention of factions from the British Isles, including Scotsmen, until the Montrosian campaign in 1650. After the date Danish-Norwegian political attention became increasingly drawn to the English Republic although Scottish relations still involved significant military recruitment until the end of the decade.

Baker, Anastasia Christine. "Anna of Denmark: Expressions of Autonomy and Agency as a Royal Wife and Mother." PDXScholar, 2012. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/713.

Full text
Abstract:
Anna of Denmark (12 December 1574 - 2 March 1619), the wife of King James VI/I of Scotland, England, and Ireland, was an intelligent and interesting woman who has, up until recently, been largely ignored by history. It has only been within the past two decades that any in-depth analysis of Anna has been done, and most of that analysis has focused on Anna's work with the Stuart court masque. The intent of this thesis has been to expand upon current scholarship regarding Anna, as well as to synthesize the various facets of Anna's life in order to put together a more comprehensive understanding of who Anna was and the various ways in which she expressed personal agency and autonomy as a queen consort as opposed to a queen regnant, and how she used the roles of royal wife and mother to further her own goals and interests. The work is divided into an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction offers a brief analysis of the primary and secondary sources, and details how these sources were used within the broader scope of the paper. This introductory section also examines Anna's early life in Denmark, her wedding, and her initial journey to Scotland. The second chapter focuses on Anna's relationships with her husband and children, and particularly how Anna established a niche for herself within first the Scottish, and later the English courts. By studying these relationships it is possible to study the ways in which Anna, as a queen consort, was able to create a court presence for herself. Chapter three analyzes Anna's relationships with other courtiers and, more specifically, what these relationships tell modern scholars about how Anna was able to exercise political influence and power both directly and indirectly. Anna's interactions with her courtiers illustrate how well she understood not only human nature, but the nature of court culture and politics. The fourth chapter presents an in-depth study of Anna's masquing career, and looks at how Anna used the court masque to not only establish a female presence on the stage, but also to fashion a public image for herself. Anna used the Stuart court masque in a way that no one had previously: she used it to express her social and political opinions, and through the court masque Anna was able to portray both who she was and how she wanted to be perceived. The final chapter covers Anna's final days and her lasting impact on English history. Anna of Denmark deserves to be brought out of the shadows of history, and this thesis has attempted to do just that. She was a bright, engaging young woman who, unfortunately, has largely been overshadowed by her husband and children. By studying Anna's various roles as wife, mother, friend, benefactor, and patron, it has been possible to bring forth a much more complete understanding of who this queen consort was and why she is important to a broader understanding of early modern English history.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been nearly sixty years since the October 1943 Danish rescue of Danish Jewry. Since this time, no historian has examined the role that the timing of the planned Jewish round-up played in the degree of success of the rescue. Would a National Socialist round-up of the Danish Jews have been successful if it occurred in 1941 for example? As long as the Danish government was in power, no anti-Jewish measures were implemented in Denmark. Within a month of the Danish government's resignation, National Socialist plans to eliminate Danish Jewry were being drafted. This thesis examines the major events in Denmark that led to the resignation of the Danish government in August 1943, and the failed plan to round-up and deport the Danish Jews. The most important conclusion of this thesis is that to a significant degree, the Danish people were successful in their rescue of Danish Jews because of the timing of the anti-Jewish measures.

Pinegar, Adriana. "Glimpses of World War II in Denmark: Memory and History in Frayn's Copenhagen and Sibbern's Resistance Scrapbook." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5564.

Full text
Abstract:
The relationship between history and memory is long and complex. While some theorists argue that they are at odds with one another, this thesis explores the necessary relationship between the two. Using Michael Frayn's 1998 play, Copenhagen, and the scrapbook of a Danish police officer and resistance fighter during World War II, the author posits the central role of uncertainty in the negotiation of individual memory and history. The position of the observer or witness to history affects the way the past is remembered and recorded. Individual witnesses, even and perhaps especially where they stray from the accepted historical narrative, testify to something that would otherwise be lost: the nature of the event. The observer therefore plays an important role in interpreting the testimony according to its place in the flow of time.

Abstract:

This licentiate thesis describes the development of the Swedish computer and video game industry. The main focus is on the Swedish game development industry. Little research on the industry has been done and the purpose is to define the companies involved and to create an initial overview of the development of the industry. This overview will later be used as a platform for the doctorial thesis.

Games are a growing culture form and today a lot of people are playing different types of computer and video games. Internationally the industry has expanded and some of the successful games have generated spectacular revenues. In Sweden the industry has received attention from different actors like universities, government bodies and media. There are today educations that are focused on game development and there are programs which allocates grants towards game companies. The rapid development in the computers technology has had a great impact on the game industry, which is dependent on hardware development to create games.

The first computer games were made for some of the very first computers in the 1940´s and 1950´s. In the 1970´s a market for games was created when arcade machines and somewhat later home consoles were introduced. The industry has grown and includes today some of the largest companies in the world.

The Swedish industry follows the international pattern but developed a bit later and the first Swedish game companies were founded in the late 1980´s. The industry has expanded, especially between 1998 and 2002. In 2005 the number of people employed in the industry had increased to over 600. During the period under study the industry seems to have had a constant problem with making a profit. Especially in 2002 and 2003 the industry has had economic problems and some of the lager companies were bankrupt.

This research presents the investigation of the epic genre´s manifestations within Brazilian audiovisual environment having as object the miniseries A muralha (TV Globo, 2000), based on the novel A muralha (1954) by Dinah Silveira de Queiroz, written by Maria Adelaide Amaral and directed by Denise Saraceni, Carlos Araújo and Luís Henrique Rios. The intersections between the productive practices of TV Globo and the referential legacy of the epic genre in film and television fields are discussed, taking into account aspects of interculturalism and the context of the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Brazil, a period marked by a boom of historic telefictions and the modernization of production strategies and marketing of audiovisual works made by the television network. The work performs an approximation to the binomial TV-cinema relationship in the open television programming and how this articulated the epic genre in his schedule in primetime serial form.

Abstract:
Both the Swedish and the Danish syllabus for history in elementary school says that the students should be acquainted with the own country’s cultural heritage and history. But what is the cultural heritage and how is it being told? The aim of this paper is to examine the Swedish and the Danish cultural heritage during a time period when the countries have many common interests, the time period when Sweden was a great power. The examination compares three Swedish and two Danish history books. The method that’s being used is to put the descriptions and explanations of occurrences and characters in the different history books against each other and also to do a quantitative comparison of the history books. The result of the examination showed that the cultural heritage about the 17th century given in the examined history books has a lot in common about the history of foreign politics which is the main examination area. The differences lie in the fact that the Danish history books mainly concentrates on history from a Danish point of view and the Swedish history books from a Swedish point of view. This means that some occurrences aren’t equally important in both countries history books. Finally it’s being discussed what effect the Danish canon that is being introduced next term can have on the Danish cultural heritage. It’s also being discussed what effect the cultural heritage existing in history books can have on the readers historical consciousness.

Abstract:
Art History
Ph.D.
This dissertation reframes the Danish artist Anna Ancher (1859-1935) by expanding the context in which the artist has been considered, to position her as a Symbolist, modernist and independent artist. A revered and familiar artist in Denmark, most scholars discuss her paintings in association with the development of the art colony in Skagen, an important site of Denmark's Modern Breakthrough in the 1880s. The represented image of Ancher in paintings by male colonists during this period indicated her centrality within the group, depicted her as a fashionable bourgeois wife and respectable mother, but simultaneously neglected to reference the development of her professional practice. By 1889, Ancher had sold major paintings and gained national and international recognition. Michael Ancher's portrait of his wife in reform dress in Coming Home from Market (1902) signifies her freedom from conventional gender roles. Despite her affiliation with the Skagen colony, Ancher matured as a painter during the 1890s after its heyday. At this time Danish Symbolism and Vitalism came to eclipse the Naturalist orientation of the prior decade. The painter's study in Paris in 1889 and her contacts in cosmopolitan Copenhagen forged an avant-garde network that in many ways referenced, but also resisted, movements from the urban French center. An aesthetic that draws from the ostensibly contradictory and divergent ideas of Charles Baudelaire, Hans Christian Andersen and Friedrich Nietzsche can be found in Ancher's painting, positioning her alongside other Danish Symbolists. Ancher was also a native of the Jutland peninsula, which experienced the growth of pietist movements and major shifts impacting agricultural labor. Ancher's paintings of religion and harvest at the beginning of the twentieth century challenged contemporary French primitivist images of Breton peasants, especially those of Paul Gauguin. After 1900, Ancher's increasingly abstract paintings of unoccupied interiors reflect the complex modernist shift in valuation of the dwelling and a new emphasis on minimal decoration and strong planar surfaces in the home as conducive to physical and psychological health. In her paintings of her own studio, Ancher challenged normative gendered divisions in the organization of the home and asserted her identity as an autonomous artist.

Abstract:
From the earliest days of English-language Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television (CBC-TV), the military has been regularly featured on the news, public affairs, documentary, and drama programs. Little has been done to study these programs, despite calls for more research and many decades of work on the methods for the historical analysis of television. In addressing this gap, this thesis explores: how media representations of the military on CBC-TV (commemorative, history, public affairs and news programs) changed over time; what accounted for those changes; what they revealed about CBC-TV; and what they suggested about the way the military and its relationship with CBC-TV evolved. Through a material culture analysis of 245 programs/series about the Canadian military, veterans and defence issues that aired on CBC-TV over a 40-year period, beginning with its establishment in 1952, this thesis argues that the conditions surrounding each production were affected by a variety of factors, namely: (1) technology; (2) foreign broadcasters; (3) foreign sources of news; (4) the influence of the military and its veterans; (5) audience response; (6) the role played by personalities involved in the production of CBC-TV programs; (7) policies/objectives/regulations set by the CBC, the Board of Broadcast Governors and the Canadian Radio-Television Commission (later, Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission); (8) ambitions for program development and the changing objectives of departments within the CBC; (9) economic constraints at the CBC; (10) CBC-TV’s relations with the other producers of Canadian television programming, like the NFB; and, (11) broader changes to the Canadian social, economic, political and cultural scenes, along with shifts in historiography. At different times, certain of these conditions were more important than others, the unique combination of which had unpredictable results for programming. The thesis traces these changes chronologically, explaining CBC-TV’s evolution from transmitting largely uncritical and often positive programming in the early 1950s, to obsession with the horrors of war and questioning of the military’s preparedness by decade’s end, to new debate about the future of the forces and the memory of war in the 1960s, to a complex mixture of activism, criticism and praise in the 1970s and 1980s, and, finally, to controversy and iconoclasm by the 1990s.

As Mainland China transitions from a planned socialist economy to one more market-focused, its economic successes have garnered attention worldwide. However, this astounding economic growth brought with it a number of negative side effects, including corruption and a resurgence ofprostitution. Gender relations have also undergone major shifts from state mandated gender equality in the Mao era to a call for the refeminization ofwomen in the Reform era. How is the Chinese population navigating this transition? In this thesis, I utilize existing melodrama theory and relevant sociological studies to explore how three Chinese TV dramas-I'm Not a Hero (2004), Close to You, Make Me Warm (2006), and Give Me a Cigarette (2006), later renamed Evening Rain--expose and explore some of these existing social problems, providing a platform for their viewers to reflect on and explore these issues on their own.

The industry has grown and today it includes some of the largest companies in the world. The Swedish industry follows the international pattern. Evidence suggests that the first Swedish games were created in the 1950’s at the large university computers. But a game developing industry seems to have developed a bit later than internationally when the first Swedish game companies were founded in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. The Swedish industry entered an introduction phase from the middle of 1980’s, a couple of years after the introduction of personal computers, until the end of the 1990’s. An expansion phase started in 1998. The expansion was strong between 1998 to 2002 and 2006 to 2008. In 2008 the number of people employed in the industry had increased to over 1300. During the studied period the industry seems to have had constant problems making a profit. Especially in 2002 and 2003 the industry had economic problems and some of the larger companies went bankrupt. The distribution among the companies shows that the concentration within the industry is growing. A few companies have expanded rapidly and have well over a hundred employees. The industry is very gender segregated and the number of women working in the industry is under ten percent. To study the development on a micro level, three Swedish game developing companies were selected. The focus was the development and change in production and organisation. The structure of the industry seems to have been changing with the fast technical development. A more modular structure seems to be emerging within the industry. In a number of areas a modular system has emerged. It is possible to buy more parts and productions capacity on the market. It is possible to buy game engines and outsource motions-capture work to other specialized companies. The relation to game publishers seems to influence the companies and create uncertainty for the game developers when they do not own the rights to the intellectual properties. The three game developers also have a similar development being founded by computer interested young men wanting to pursuit their interest as a job. The Swedish subculture around the so called “demoscene” seems to have been a factor in the early development of the industry and a recruitment base for the early developers.

Abstract:
This dissertation is about the intellectual reception of TV in 1980s China. While Chinese media have often been a topic within studies of globalization and global political economy, Chinese TV history still has not gained enough scholarly attention. Chinese scholars' extant studies of TV history have provided valuable knowledge, but a more extensive and critical view of the interaction between TV and culture is still lacking. This dissertation aims to explore Chinese TV history in the pivotal decade of the 1980s from the viewpoint of cultural studies. Using theories of media technology, globalization and gender studies, this dissertation reexamines how a western technology was introduced to and then embedded in Chinese culture. This study of the popularization of TV in 1980s China is historical-critical supplemented with oral history interviews. Well-known Chinese periodicals were studied whose goals were not just to educate people, as was the normal role of media under socialism, but also to entertain them. These magazines include Life Out of 8 Hours, Popular TV, Popular Cinema, Modern Family, and Chinese Advertising. The dissertation also analyzes TV dramas produced in China or imported from other nations in order to examine the interaction between various ideologies of Chinese society and those of international media. It explores how the hybridity between western TV culture and Chinese traditions was represented in popular Chinese visual media. The confusions and ambitions of modernization appeared in the representations of visual media. The intellectual reception of TV in China was a negotiation between tradition and modernity, nationalism and internationalism. Chapter one examines how the Chinese media introduced and represented TV in the 1980s. Chapter two investigates how TV was presented by 1980s Chinese media as a symbol of modern life, wealth and higher social status. In chapter three, I examine how TV, a modern medium, was linked media to nature. Chapter four concentrates on the relationship between TV and other media technologies, such as film and print media. Chapter five focuses on gender representation in discourse and images promoting TV, its dramas, and related media such as TV and film magazines. The epilogue provides a brief review of the general situation of Chinese TV since the 1990s.

This study has as its object the Telensino System in the State of CearÃ, in the period between 1973 to 1979. In other words, since the year of its implementation by the end of the 1970s. The first assumption of this research was the personal interest. Another important assumption was the viability of the research, because the relevance of the subject enabled the existence of sources for the research. We can list as another justification for the social and educational importance of this study, so it will contribute to preserving the history and memory of Cearà education, in the 1970s. This study aimed to construct a historical narrative of Telensino System in the State of CearÃ, collaborating to preserving the memory of education; to contrast the educational ways and political clashes in deploying such a system, in the 1970s; to identify the political, economic, social and educational scenery of the state of CearÃ, in the 1970s, to reflect the implementation of Telensino; to contrast the pedagogical features Telensino system in the light of social subjects intertwined in the process. The research was historiographical nature and also included oral reports. We used in addition to documentary sources, the speeches of interwoven social subjects in the educational process of implementation of Telensino in CearÃ, in the 1970s. This dissertation is divided into three chapters: 1) Cearà in the 1970s: socio-economic, political and educational context ; 2) The Telensino as a way to education in CearÃ; and 3) The Telensino the light of the subjects who lived the experience. The subjects were chosen because of their involvement with the topic and the research period. For this reason, we used the techniques of semi-structured interviews. The research was conducted in four parts, divided as follows: Historiographical Dialogue, Search Field, transcription of the interviews and the writing of the dissertation. Based on the analysis of documents and interviews, can be noticed that the Telensino reached a much larger audience than it was initially proposed that it was to take education to the farthest municipalities of Cearà and places of difficult access, to supply the lack of qualified teachers, because they not only took teaching of First Grade at these locations, as well as they assisted in the expansion of undergraduate, from the moment on that the disciplines of Basic Course were taught by television. We emphasize, also that the number of individuals served by the system grew throughout the period surveyed.

Abstract:
In order to bridge the knowledge gap noted between Western and Chinese approaches to analysis of China’s TV media, this thesis sets out to propose an alternative methodological framework for investigation of the emergence, development and significance of a distinctive television genre categorised as ‘political history TV drama’ (PHTD), produced in Mainland China since the 1980s. Situating the genre in its historical and political contexts of production, I make particular reference to the orchestrating role of the Chinese state, the political re-articulation of Confucian values, and the reinventing of Chinese national identity. The thesis is composed of three parts. Part one includes the literature review of both Chinese and Western genre theory, followed by a discussion of further useful constructs to put in place the theoretical scaffolding for the study. In part two, the historical review concerns the production and political contexts of Chinese TV and TV drama in general. The third part applies this methodological framework to PHTD when contextualised in its Chinese setting, analysing its definitions, conventions, generic and cultural verisimilitudes, and hybridity. The third part is the core of the research, which investigates its rise to maturity, utilising a cultural and discursive account that encompasses: textual analysis; the study of its political and historical contexts; Chinese moral ideology and linguistics. A number of examples and case studies are examined as evidence for my perspective on questions of nationalism and Confucianism embedded in PHTD. The significance of this genre is in its reconstructed portrayal of the revived concept of a ‘patriarchal Confucian society’. Therefore, the thesis sets out the political, social and cultural landscape in which the genre is embedded in recognition of its representation of much more than just repackaged traditional narratives. In turn, this investigation helps to achieve a fuller understanding of the relation between political and intellectual forces, and the key role of nationalism combined with Confucianism in the media strategy of the Chinese authorities up until the first ten years of the 21st century.

Abstract:
In this essay the remastered version of the video game The Binding of Isaac- The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, has been analysed on how it will fit as an educational material in the Swedish upper-secondary school. The portrayals and thematics in the game that is compatible for discussion in the ethic and moral field has been compared to two points from the curriculum for religious studies in the Swedish upper-secondary school, regarding ethic and moral arguments, theories and models. The parts of the game analysed is split in to two main groups: the Abrahamic religion’s position in the ethic and moral dilemmas in question, and how the discussions regarding the ethic and moral-compatible portrayals and thematics in upper-secondary school classroom’s could evolve. I concluded that the video game would be compatible with education in the upper-secondary school, though it’s up to the responsible teacher, regarding the time aspect, and how the teacher would consider the game to be received by pupils.

The purpose of this study is to examine the seldom researched Swedish geopolitical interests inNorway in the first half of the 17th century, with the brief 1658 conquest of Trondheim as itscentral event of inquiry. Through the study of privy council protocols and chancellor AxelOxenstierna’s correspondence, the study builds a case for the confluence of security, commerce, andthe concepts of nations as the influencing factors that shaped Swedish imperial foreign policy in thedecades leading up to the dramatic war of 1658, yielding a theoretical construction of the Empire’sBaltic doctrine, or the Oxenstierna doctrine, as an explanatory model for Sweden’s early modernexpansion patterns. Subsequently through understanding of the Empire’s expansionist rationaleleading up to 1658, the conquest of the Norwegian province of Trondheim is put in a new light ashaving been an interruptive and complicated re-imagining of what the Swedish Empire should be.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to do a qualitative analysis of the swedish television drama Fröken Frimans krig. The story is focused around a group of women that starts a cooperation with the goal of providing women from all layers of the society with affordable and fresh groceries free from contamination that could diseases like tuberculosis and cholera. The goal of the analysis is to investigate the way historical surrounding circumstances and the obstacles for swedish women in the beginning of the 20th century are portrayed in the drama. The theoretical basis of the study is based on the way in which the creator uses history and to what extent the content is historically accurate according to conventional facts. The results of the analysis showed that the drama was mostly historically accurate but that during certain scenes deviations were made from the accuracy, for example an epithet used in the drama concerning the name of the cooperation was mentioned 25 years before it appears in history. The analysis also showed that one of the biggest obstacles for women to achieve social equality was the class structures which divided women into firmly established categories in society. For example a lower class woman was offered the position as manager of the cooperations first store but she firmly and clearly declines the offer as a result of her awareness of the current class structures in swedish society.

Botin, Livia Maria.
This study examined how the talk show Roda Viva, produced by the television network TV Cultura, had discussed and publicized issues that are related to science and technology in the last decades of the twentieth century (1986-2006). The hypothesis of this thesis states that the images of scientific activity transmitted by the TV show reflect mostly TV Cultura own pedagogical and political project as well as the expectations of São Paulo intellectual elites who worked at this institution during the covered period. In addition, we analyzed how these interviews influenced the construction of multiple views on science in Brazil. The sources used to support this research consist of three major documentary sets: 1) interviews with public people and politicians who are important to S&T areas in Brazil and members of the scientific community; 2) Padre Anchieta Foundation Statutes and reports referring to TV Cultura; and finally, 3) interviews with members of Roda Viva production staff.

Abstract:
This thesis follows the process of introducing natural gas in Sweden and the construction of a Northern European gas grid from 1967 to 1991. Natural gas is a relatively unnoticed fuel in Sweden today, but this relative anonymity stands in contrast to an extensive historical activity that has taken place behind the scenes of Swedish energy policy. The single pipeline constructed between Denmark and Sweden in the early 1980s was both preceded and followed by many other attempts to construct a larger natural gas pipeline in the region made in the last 50 years. Åberg traces these attempts while discussing the complex and messy process of constructing and managing a transnational energy infrastructure.Åberg follows actors in Sweden and other countries in their attempts to negotiate and construct a natural gas infrastructure, and puts this process into a national as well as transnational context. The perceived risks and opportunities surrounding natural gas are examined, together with factors that have influenced the development of natural gas in a broader sense. By seeing the changing and messy natural gas projects as arenas where different actors construct and negotiate risks and opportunities, as well as contexualize the projects, Åberg shows how the natural gas sector in Sweden has evolved and taken shape. The study shows that natural gas in Sweden has suffered from unstable actor coalitions on different levels, a difficult market situation, and a changeful political context, especially with regard to energy policy. The import status of the fuel and the consequential transnationality of the natural gas infrastructure have also made the process of constructing a pipeline more complex. However, natural gas was introduced in Sweden, showing that when a strong enough actor coalition agreed that there was enough reason to warrant a natural gas introduction and was ready to join this endeavor, a connection could be achieved. This puts into question to what degree general explanations in terms of finance and policy drive energy decisions, and makes a case for showing how these explanations are adapted into their social and historical contexts in sometimes surprising ways.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the implementation of the SS’s Greater Germanic idea in the Danish border region of South Jutland. Its focus is on how Danish and ethnic German (volksdeutsche) national socialists, organised in their respective Nazi parties, dealt with the SS’s crusade on behalf of a supranational racial vision. The study traces why the two groups reacted so negatively to the SS’s ideology - despite the SS’s power, despite the Greater Germanic promise of high racial prestige, and despite shared service in “Germanic” units of the Waffen-SS. The SS’s attempts to use a race-based ideology to overcome the disputes that divided South Jutland’s two Nazi parties ran aground on fundamentally nationalist identities. For most members of the German minority, the Greater Germanic ideology was a threat. The German minority hoped for border revision; to acknowledge Danes as racial equals would endanger their political goals. Nor were Danish Nazis more enthusiastic. To be sure, the SS’s vision did provide an ideological weapon in the fight against demands for border vision. But the potential imperialism of the Greater Germanic idea worried those who prized continued Danish sovereignty. After all, the first hope of the Danish Nazis was to rule an independent national-socialist Danish state. The study makes it clear, however, that the fate of the Greater Germanic idea cannot be understood simply in terms of Realpolitik. Rather, the conflicts between the SS and its collaboration partners must also be understood as a clash between racial and völkisch concepts of community. The SS's vision of a Greater Germanic Reich based on ideologies of race clashed with the German-minority and Danish national-socialist commitment to Volk-based nationalism. Despite their strong commitment to Nazi ideologies, both collaboration partners found the SS’s racial community “unimaginable”.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine, through a content analysis, how the female characters Maggan, Nina and Christina are represented in relation to their role and position of power in the society in the TV series Vår tid är nu. Furthermore, we wanted to investigate how these representations differ in the first and last season, respectively, with the emergence of feminism. With a targeted selection of scenes as a basis and with a gender-theoretical perspective, our analysis scheme was applied to the selected scenes. We have created the analysis chart with the help of Keith Selby and Ron Cowdery's narrative analysis model. Furthermore, we have used semiotics as analysis tool to provide answers to our research questions. The results showed that the female characters are portrayed as driven in both seasons. In the first season, however, the characters are portrayed as more limited to the society’s rules and they dream of becoming independent. In the last season, the female characters are portrayed as stronger, they have greater integrity and they dare to go their own way. The results also showed that the portrayals of the female characters' role and position of power differ between the first and last season. In the first season, their role is more marked by society's norms and their position of power is subordinate to the male characters. In the last season, their role is more equal to the male characters and their position of power is higher, in some cases higher than the men’s. These changes in how women's role and position of power are portrayed can be linked to the feminism that emerged in the time period between the two seasons.

Abstract:

Based on 30 years of work experience in TV and film production, I have made a phenomenological analysis of my perception of meaning in work - how it arises and how it is undermined. The story starts in my experience of early professional film making in the 1980's and describes how a change to work in TV production required the development of a new professional identity.

The text also illustrates how as a female director I have managed my role in a male dominated and structured work environment. Being defined as an exception from the male norm has pushed me towards femininist reflection and the need to redefine my own work role - the generally accepted view having felt uncomfortable.

An analysis of structural change in TV and film production shows how market pressures and ways of thought have increasingly invaded cultural endeavour. Professional spheres of influence are weakened, while developments in the media are characterised by a commercialism which encroaches more and more upon artistic, spiritual and moral values. This attitude, where quality is in retreat, has transformedprogramme makers from creative originators into becoming suppliers of raw material in a factory- like process geared to produce great volume at low cost.

The aim of this essay is to show how changes in society and in TV and film making have affected my perception of my work. Structural transformation in the media has circumscribed the scope for creative play as an important source of energy and inspiration in work and it has eroded my feeling that work is personally meaningful.

Abstract:
The purpose ofthis study is to examine how Sweden and Denmark explain their colonial experience in textbooks. A comparison will be made between Sweden’s colonization of Sápmi and treatment of Samer, and Denmark’s colonization of Greenland and treatment of Innuits. To conduct this study a comparative method was utilized, as well as hermeneutic theory which was used to try to understand how the countries explain their colonial experience. The theory applied for this topic was selective traditions in a textbook perspective. The results show that Sweden tones down their colonial experience, and the textbooks differ a lot in (if) and (how) they mention Sweden’s experience. The colonization of Sápmi is toned down as well as the treatment of Samer in books written before the new curriculum. The textbooks written after the new curriculum present a less toned down version of Sweden ́s treatment of Samer. This change is due to changes in society, as Samer have gained a lot more rights in Swedish society, which can be seen in Swedish textbooks. Denmark does not hide their colonial experiences, and the books also have more consensus in their description of Denmark’s colonial experience. The books before the new curriculum describe Denmark’s colonial experience as proof of the greatness of Denmark’s past. The books after the new curriculum describe Denmark’s colonial experience in the perspective of slave trade. Slave trade was one of the 29 canon points that entered the Danish curriculum, which could have influenced the Danish textbooks. Denmark’s textbooks often describe Denmark as a “good” colonial country, and the textbooks do not describe the treatment of Innuits, which could be explained by that, Denmark’s treatment of Innuits does not match with Denmark’s national image.

This thesis aims to analyze from an historical comparative perspective the role of educational broadcasters in the French and Brazilian television field between 1994 and 2002, having as central axis the social relations that made possible the creation of La Cinquième and Canal Futura. La Cinquième, public education channel, inaugurated in 1994, was created with the objective of supporting and providing resources in order to meet France’s educational needs and help to withdraw its crisis. The foundation of this public education channel arised whilst a reorganization the French television area after the disruption caused by the breaking of public monopoly in the 1980’s.The Canal Futura, private broadcaster, created in 1997, enabled Globo Organizations to reinforce the image of their companies, particularly of Rede Globo, given the symbiosis between the two stations, due to its commitment as an effective social services provider responsible for dissemination of cultural and educational content for brazilian society. The existence of the Canal Futura demonstrated the efficiency of commercial television model as way of guaranteeing educational quality productions, invalidating public experiences in educational television, specifically the TVE, in Rio de Janeiro and TV Cultura, in São Paulo. Therefore, this thesis proposal is to confront the possibility that La Cinquième and Futura, although from different natures (public and private) and acting in different television fields, have both faced, throughout their trajectory, the most various challenges, frequently with similar practices, which confirms the insertion of networks in the international debate, opened in several countries, on ways to enhance the educational uses of television in overcoming the socio-economic inequalities but also in exploring the educational audiovisual a new category of market. La Cinquième and Canal Futura have constantly used the term knowledge, a strategy that reveals the search for an image of innovation in face of representations that the airing of educational content on television would be archaic and tedious. The diffusion of knowledge would embrace a lighter, enterprising, modern air, linked to a world of discovery. Finally, both La Cinquième and Canal Futura got closer to what would become a definitive relation with the elements consacreted in the television field, which has expressed itself through the use of renowned artists, popular genres and other entertainment-related formats.

Abstract:
TV shows hold a constantly expanding place in our lives. As a topic of conversation, debate, investment, serial fictions are central in our society. They have long been criticized and unfairly excluded from the artistic field, but now, they are being reinstated for their extraordinary richness. After having cast them aside, how can we understand them? How can we analyze them? Which specificities define the TV shows genre? We shall offer an analytical, historical, economical and sociological work around this type of fiction, built around a simple idea: TV shows are an art of time. Developed on an unmatched audiovisual longevity, TV shows feed on time as much as they fight it. Using this paradox, we shall emphasize the temporal forces which inhabit and rule this type of fiction, in order to understand and analyze them. Basing ourselves on a corpus of diverse Northern-American contemporary TV shows, we shall try to demonstrate that the study of serial fictions must be done through the study of their greatest specificity: time. Time, which affects production, diffusion, writing, narration and even the television viewer. Everything is connected through some experience of time. It’s through this huge singularity that a TV show can unveil itself, as it struggles to unveil the intimacy of the characters which inhabit it

Abstract:
On April 9, 1940, Germany invaded Denmark. Instantly, the fate and status of Greenland, a Danish colony, was thrust into limbo. During the war, Greenland’s vital mineral resources and location made it significant for the warring parties on both sides of the Atlantic. However, conflicting international corporate and political interests made any act to defend the island on the part of the Allies, or the officially neutral Americans, problematic. Within a year of the Danish occupation, the American government had signed an agreement for the defense of Greenland, extending the protection of both the Monroe Doctrine and the American military to the island. This action was an important step in the formal expansion of American influence in the Western Hemisphere that occurred during the Second World War. This thesis argues that global economic, political, and technological changes led to Greenland’s increased geopolitical significance and set the stage for a shift in the balance of power within the North Atlantic Triangle. It demonstrates how decisions relating to the security of the island came to be made and how conflicting interests within and between governments affected the genesis of the occupation. It explores how Winston Churchill’s decision to mine the North Sea led to the American occupation of Greenland and examines the ways in which the effects of Churchill’s actions raised concerns in Canada about the possibility of a British defeat, which in turn led Mackenzie King, the Canadian Prime Minister, to align his foreign policy closer to that of the United States’ President Roosevelt. This thesis also asserts that Roosevelt successfully used the potential foreign occupation of Greenland to demonstrate to the American public the dangers of foreign conflicts to the United States and to further his hemispheric security objectives both domestically and abroad. These events had a profound and lasting impact on the relationships within the North Atlantic Triangle and on political identity in Greenland, and signalled an important shift in the foreign policy of the United States toward greater American involvement in world affairs.
