Abstract:
The writing of the early history of U.S. television has long concentrated on the rise of dominating national networks. Based on principles of social, demographic, policy, and urban history, I propose we rethink historical analysis, and begin at the local level. To illustrate the power of this approach, I offer a case study of the place of Washington, D.C., as a site for network news. In the mid-1950s, it was also an important example of live locally produced country music. As a community, Washington presents an important site where forces such as migration and suburbanization shaped the early history of television.

Abstract:
Abstract This article highlights and discusses the main findings from three different media production studies (2016, 2019, and 2022) investigating the changing production culture of the schedulers in public service media. The inclusion of a broadcaster video-on-demand (BVoD) service in the broadcaster's portfolio affected the production culture. First, the article argues that profound changes happened to the organisational framing of the BVoD service's status and its impact on the production practices. Second, the article shows the BVoD service's impact on the content priorities among the schedulers at TV 2 in Denmark and third, how the public service branding of TV 2 became more explicit in the production culture. However, across these three points of impact and the shifts in the strategic focus at TV 2, the business model at TV 2 and its interplay with the public service obligations runs as an undercurrent.

Abstract:
The so-called “Bologna process” is an effort to standardize higher education in Europe. Among journalism educators in particular, the goal is a harmonization of best practices in order to establish common training protocols. Contrary to assumptions, however, best practices often conflict with cultural values. Specifically, there has been little attention paid to on-camera behavior of TV journalists. Denmark is a case study where standard Anglo-American on-camera presentation styles violate deeply held cultural values. This paper argues that cultural differences matter and have serious consequences for European TV journalism educators in the age of globalization.

This article deals with the beginnings of the Tuukkaq Theatre in Denmark, focusing on the first stages in the creation of the play Inuit 1975-77 and its first performance and reception by Greenlandic audiences in Greenland on the two months´ tour in the spring of 1978. Theatre being a volatile art form I´ve also found it useful to dwell on how Inuit was televised and broadcasted by DR-TV 1977-78, as the TV-edition offers a reasonably fair impression of how the play was performed from its opening night and during the first years.

Abstract:
Food, Terroir, and Television: Taste Denmark! Food has become more dominant in the media landscape, but how does a food programme on television entertain us? We analyse how the 13 episodes of the Claus Meyer series Smag på Danmark (Taste Denmark!)are constructed and narrated. We pay particular attention to the different locations of the episodes and discuss the terms terroir and mythologization. The series establishes ambiguities and relations, and in this connection the location understood as terroir means everything – and at the same time means nothing at all. With reference to Barthes, the series links food as a sign to location, but in such a way that room is left for the viewer’s own imagination. The series demonstrates to the viewers how judgements of taste can be made in a time of leisure and a universe of holidays, with Meyer acting as the viewer’s proxy. The series is constantly establishing, demonstrating and anticipating a pleasure in which the viewer can participate in his or her own imagination. This makes excellent entertainment because so much is left to be worked through in the viewer’s own imagination.

Abstract:
Abstract. Today, citizens have the possibility to use many different types of news media and participate politically in various ways. This study examines how use of different news types (hard and soft TV news as well as printed and online versions of broadsheet and tabloid newspapers) indirectly affects changes in offline and online political participation through current affairs knowledge and internal efficacy during nonelection and election time. We use a four-wave national panel survey from Denmark (N = 2,649) and show that use of hard TV news and broadsheets as well as online tabloids positively affects changes in both offline and online political participation through current affairs knowledge and internal efficacy. Use of soft TV news and printed tabloids has a negative indirect effect. These results are more pronounced for online political participation and during election time. However, use of soft TV news also has a positive direct effect on changes in political participation, which suggests a positive impact via other processes.

Murdoch, Steven W. "Scotland, Denmark-Norway and the House of Stuart 1603-1660 : a diplomatic and military analysis." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.265379.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis redresses the belief that there was little or no diplomatic or political relationship between Scotland and Denmark-Norway from the start of the British reign of James VI and I in 1603 to the Restoration of Charles II in 1660. In fact the sixteenth century relationship with Scotland continued to develop into the reign of Charles II. By examining the identity of Charles I and the evolving 'British' state, Scotland and her foreign relations are placed in a clear context. Previously prominent Stuart diplomats, like Sir Robert Anstruther, Sir James Spen or Sir Andrew Sinclair have been known as English diplomats rather than Scottish or British and were presumed to be working for the benefit of England rather than Scotland or even greater 'Britain'. Although Scotland and England usually shared both a single monarch and a common corps diplomatique, between 1603-1660 Scottish and English foreign policy frequently differed. In addition the polices of the House of Stuart frequently clashed with the agendas of the two British parliaments and of Denmark-Norway. Despite binding alliances with Christian IV in 1618, 1621 and 1625, Charles I and the English state adopted a policy of war against France and Spain which meant that Christian IV had to rely on Scotland for military support during his war against the Habsburg empire. Nearly 14,000 Scots went to the aid of the Danish king. This Scottish policy of military intervention continued between 1625-1660 and is here statistically evaluated in comparison to the involvement of England and Ireland in Denmark-Norway. When Charles I's policies threatened the independence of the Scottish nation in the 1630s and the integrity of the English Parliament in the 1640s, Christian IV found himself courted by all sides. Denmark-Norway's position at the gateway to the Baltic ensured the diplomatic and military attention of factions from the British Isles, including Scotsmen, until the Montrosian campaign in 1650. After the date Danish-Norwegian political attention became increasingly drawn to the English Republic although Scottish relations still involved significant military recruitment until the end of the decade.

Baker, Anastasia Christine. "Anna of Denmark: Expressions of Autonomy and Agency as a Royal Wife and Mother." PDXScholar, 2012. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/713.

Full text
Abstract:
Anna of Denmark (12 December 1574 - 2 March 1619), the wife of King James VI/I of Scotland, England, and Ireland, was an intelligent and interesting woman who has, up until recently, been largely ignored by history. It has only been within the past two decades that any in-depth analysis of Anna has been done, and most of that analysis has focused on Anna's work with the Stuart court masque. The intent of this thesis has been to expand upon current scholarship regarding Anna, as well as to synthesize the various facets of Anna's life in order to put together a more comprehensive understanding of who Anna was and the various ways in which she expressed personal agency and autonomy as a queen consort as opposed to a queen regnant, and how she used the roles of royal wife and mother to further her own goals and interests. The work is divided into an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction offers a brief analysis of the primary and secondary sources, and details how these sources were used within the broader scope of the paper. This introductory section also examines Anna's early life in Denmark, her wedding, and her initial journey to Scotland. The second chapter focuses on Anna's relationships with her husband and children, and particularly how Anna established a niche for herself within first the Scottish, and later the English courts. By studying these relationships it is possible to study the ways in which Anna, as a queen consort, was able to create a court presence for herself. Chapter three analyzes Anna's relationships with other courtiers and, more specifically, what these relationships tell modern scholars about how Anna was able to exercise political influence and power both directly and indirectly. Anna's interactions with her courtiers illustrate how well she understood not only human nature, but the nature of court culture and politics. The fourth chapter presents an in-depth study of Anna's masquing career, and looks at how Anna used the court masque to not only establish a female presence on the stage, but also to fashion a public image for herself. Anna used the Stuart court masque in a way that no one had previously: she used it to express her social and political opinions, and through the court masque Anna was able to portray both who she was and how she wanted to be perceived. The final chapter covers Anna's final days and her lasting impact on English history. Anna of Denmark deserves to be brought out of the shadows of history, and this thesis has attempted to do just that. She was a bright, engaging young woman who, unfortunately, has largely been overshadowed by her husband and children. By studying Anna's various roles as wife, mother, friend, benefactor, and patron, it has been possible to bring forth a much more complete understanding of who this queen consort was and why she is important to a broader understanding of early modern English history.

Abstract:
It has been nearly sixty years since the October 1943 Danish rescue of Danish Jewry. Since this time, no historian has examined the role that the timing of the planned Jewish round-up played in the degree of success of the rescue. Would a National Socialist round-up of the Danish Jews have been successful if it occurred in 1941 for example? As long as the Danish government was in power, no anti-Jewish measures were implemented in Denmark. Within a month of the Danish government's resignation, National Socialist plans to eliminate Danish Jewry were being drafted. This thesis examines the major events in Denmark that led to the resignation of the Danish government in August 1943, and the failed plan to round-up and deport the Danish Jews. The most important conclusion of this thesis is that to a significant degree, the Danish people were successful in their rescue of Danish Jews because of the timing of the anti-Jewish measures.

Pinegar, Adriana. "Glimpses of World War II in Denmark: Memory and History in Frayn's Copenhagen and Sibbern's Resistance Scrapbook." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5564.

Full text
Abstract:
The relationship between history and memory is long and complex. While some theorists argue that they are at odds with one another, this thesis explores the necessary relationship between the two. Using Michael Frayn's 1998 play, Copenhagen, and the scrapbook of a Danish police officer and resistance fighter during World War II, the author posits the central role of uncertainty in the negotiation of individual memory and history. The position of the observer or witness to history affects the way the past is remembered and recorded. Individual witnesses, even and perhaps especially where they stray from the accepted historical narrative, testify to something that would otherwise be lost: the nature of the event. The observer therefore plays an important role in interpreting the testimony according to its place in the flow of time.

Abstract:
Literature about internationalization of firms has focused primarily on manufacturing companies and developed countries and there are relatively few studies about internationalization of service companies and companies from emerging countries. The objective of this study is to investigate the internationalization process of a Brazilian company that operates in the service sector, Globo Television Network, which has the beginning of its internationalization still in the 70s and went through several stages of internationalization traditional, with different results. The method chosen was the case study using survey data from the company and interviews with executives who were involved or who knew closely the process of internationalization. Some questions guided the study and were answered by the interviewers: (1) What were the motivating factors for the internationalization of TV Globo? (2) What were the methods used by the company to enter the foreign market? (3) What criteria were employed to select target countries? (4) What were the market results? (5) What were the main obstacles and difficulties?

Abstract:
The paper examines the history of Danish children’s literature translation into and publication in Russian from the middle of the 19th century to the present day. The article considers literary and extraliterary reasons for the fluctuations in the readers’ and publishers’ interest in Scandinavian literature throughout the history of literary contacts between Russia and Denmark. The work analyses contemporary publishing trends and the book market participants’ motivations when selecting Danish authors and books for translation into Russian.

The Protected Burial Mound ‘Store Vejlhøj’, Vinderup, Denmark: First Results. Det Kgl. Bibliotek, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.7146/aulsps-e.479.

Abstract:
An archaeological excavation of the protected burial mound Store Vejlhøj in northwestern Denmark was carried out in October-November 2021. The excavation formed part of the ERC-funded research project called ANTHEA, focusing on the deep history of anthropogenic heathlands. It was conducted by Aarhus University in collaboration with Holstebro Museum and Moesgaard Museum. The aim was to test a new method of sampling pollen data from different construction stages in a burial mound and comparing them with pollen data from nearby lake sediments with a view to improving our understanding of prehistoric anthropogenic heathland dynamics. Prior to the excavation, soil cores were collected from two nearby peat sediments as well as six burial mounds (including Store Vejlhøj) within a 1 km range of Lake Skånsø, where previous pollen analyses had been carried out. Based on these preliminary corings, Store Vejlhøj was selected for further archaeological investigation. A dispensation for excavating the protected mound was granted by the Danish Palaces and Culture Agency. The excavation was based on a 5 m long trench through the barrow, moving from its foot inwards. The surface vegetation and 40 cm topsoil were removed by an excavator, after which the remainder of the trench was manually dug in horizontal layers. Observation conditions were good. The excavation revealed a series of well-defined barrow construction stages, as well as unusually wellpreserved turf structures. Only two archaeological finds could be related to the barrow, both of which were later than its initial construction: a secondary urn in the top layer, and the base of a second urn at the foot of the mound. The burial mound was constructed using a minimum of three shells, which could be observed in the trench profile. Turfs were most probably collected locally in a landscape dominated by grass pastures, where no previous turf cutting had taken place. A total of 34 soil samples were collected for paleoecological analyses (pollen, Non-Pollen Polymorphs (NPPs), macrofossils) and geoarchaeological analyses (micromorphology, bulk samples). Preliminary pollen and macrofossil results from the burial mound revealed poor preservation conditions, which prompted a trench extension of 0.5 m by 0.2 m to find better preservation conditions. This extension resulted in the collection of a single final macrofossil sample, although there was no identifiable change in the in-situ preservation conditions. The dating results of the mound have not yet been completed and will be included as appendix 4-6 in 2023.

Fagerheim White, Ellen-Louisa, Mervi Honkatukia, Jaana Peippo, and Maria Kjetså. Equines in the Nordics – History, Status and Genetics. The Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen), June 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.53780/flkb7985.

Abstract:
With roots as far as the Bronze age, equines have played an invaluable role in history, both with regards to agriculture and forestry, warfare, transportation and leisure, and therefore hold important cultural significance in the Nordics. The link between horses and the welfare benefits of their caregivers makes the species an important part of society as well. Since the agricultural and industrial revolution, the equine sector has been influenced by a range of challenges due to the dramatic change in the role of horses in society, especially for the Nordic native breeds. However, as society adapts and finds new ways to use and protect them, there is a hope for the future. Although there has been cooperation between the Nordic countries in the horse sector, a collective report of the status of all the Nordic countries has been missing. This report marks a start for this type of effort by considering both commercial and native breeds. Further, it comprises the horse sector in the Nordics, with a special focus on the native horse breeds and the possibilities they carry for environmental sustainability, their socio-economic importance, their genetics as well as their risk status. The report further evaluates the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) maintained and developed by FAO as a tool for gathering information about the development and current status of the native breeds. The goal of this report is to identify knowledge gaps and areas of improvement for the Nordic equine sector and the collected data of the native horse breeds. One of the biggest challenges has been to find validated information sources for the population numbers of the breeds in each country – there are varying estimates for both commercial and native breeds. The numbers have significant impact for the determination of managing strategies of the populations. Reports for each of the countries (Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) are presented, and depict the current role of horses, breeding, population development and economic values of the equine sector are listed in each of the country-reports. The information in the country reports were derived from a questionnaire and by using DAD-IS.
