Abstract:
Few historians have examined the portrayals of China by British writers during the nineteenth century. Although Britain lead all other western powers in the penetration, exploration and exploitation of the Chinese Empire during the nineteenth century, British perceptions of China, particularly during the critical final decades of the century, have only been presented as small parts of larger comprehensive surveys of western images of China. Historians agree that as a result of Britain's active role in China, British writers were the leading transmitters of information about China to the West, especially after the formal 'opening' of China by treaty after 1860. However, no one has adequately addressed the question of what information was available to the British reading public during the period from 1860 to 1900. As source material for their conclusions about British perceptions of the Chinese, historians have relied exclusively on a small number of books about China published in the late nineteenth century. They have overlooked the tremendous amount of source material available in British magazines and newspapers from the late nineteenth century. The periodical and newspaper press was the leading source of information for nineteenth century British readers. Therefore, a complete examination of British perceptions of China requires some examination of this material. A survey of more than 200 articles in British magazines and journals from the period 1860 to 1900, revealed three major themes in the presentation of China to the late nineteenth century reading public. Two of these themes, the alien and incomprehensible nature of China and China' s refusal to modernize, have been discussed by other historians. While the books that they used as source material did reveal the negative aspects of these themes, the periodical press better demonstrates the relentlessly hostile presentation of information about China, the constant repetition of a narrow range of topics dealing with China and further, the subtle shift of writers' attitudes against China on an issue such as modernization. While the character of individual Chinese was not a major issue in the few books that historians of the period have examined, it emerged as a major theme in many articles published in the late nineteenth century. Finally, an examination of news reporting from China in the Times of London revealed the persistence of negative portrayals of China year after year. British hostility toward China was most clearly demonstrated through the course of regular Times coverage of events from China. The negative imagery remained consistent despite improving communications between Britain and China and despite the steadily increasing volume of information reaching Britain from China.

Abstract:
This study examined public perception of the social relevance of Christian churches in the year the New Poor Law was passed. The first two chapters presented historiography concerning the Voluntary crisis which threatened the Anglican establishment, and the relationship of Christian churches to the New Poor Law. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 revealed the recurring image of "true" Christianity in its relation to the church crisis and the New Poor Law in the working men's, political, and religious periodical press. The study demonstrated a particular working class interest in Christianity and the effect of evangelicalism on religious renewal and social concerns. Orthodox Christians, embroiled in religious and political controversy, articulated practical concern for the poor less effectively than secularists.

Palmer, Beth Lilian. "Strategies of sensation and the transformation of the Press, 1860-1880 : Mary Braddon, Florence Marryat and Ellen Wood, female author-editors, and the sensation phenomenon in mid-Victorian magazine publishing." Abstract:
This thesis examines the processes of writerly and editorial literary production undertaken by women sensation authors in the 1860s and 1870s. This focus represents a shift from the prevailing critical emphasis on the consumption of sensation fiction to the realm of production and therein allows the thesis to analyse the ways in which sensation operates as a set of rhetorical and linguistic strategies for women writers in the changing publishing conditions of mid-to-late Victorian society. I consider the ways in which sensation is an idiom that permeates all aspects of magazine publishing in this period and demonstrate how it could be adapted and become an empowering discourse for women writers and editors. Furthermore, this thesis sees sensation as an important component in the transformation of the press in the 1860s and 1870s. By analysing the specific ways in which sensational strategies were appropriated and transformed, this thesis reassesses the role of sensation in the creation of women’s writing in the second half of the nineteenth century, and consider its legacies in later ‘New Woman’ writers. I achieve this by examining three women editors, who were part of the transformation of magazine publishing in the period. Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915), Ellen (Mrs. Henry) Wood (1814-1887), and Florence Marryat (1837-1899) all operated as writers and editors in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. They produced varying types of sensational fiction that they serialised in their own monthly magazines, Belgravia, Argosy, and London Society respectively. Sensation provided a dynamic and flexible means for these women author-editors to assert their status in the context of the expansion of the press in the 1860s and 1870s. I argue that their work invites a more fluid and generous critical definition of sensation.

Abstract:
This work intents to analise the political transformations occured in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, through a comparative and historical point of view. Starting in 1808, this transformations completaly changed the ancient iberical world, giving birth to a political emancipation. Therefore, such changes allowed the elaboration of constitutional projects that legitimazed these events. These situation had a breakthrough at 1824, as the Constituição Outorgada in Rio de Janeiro, seat of the brazilian empire, and with the constitutional project from Buenos Aires, wich was the baseline of the future constitution. During the elaboration of this study, we priorized as fonts, the constitutional projects from 1813 up to 1824, and also laws, decrees and newspapers of this period of time, specially the Gazeta de Buenos Aires. To the process occurred in Rio de Janeiro, we emphasized the debates held at 1823 assembly, its constitutional project, the constitution of 1824, and newspapers such as Revérbero Constitucional Fluminense and Sentinella da Liberdade na Guarita de Pernambuco. Considering the social and political issues, we intended to study the political path traced and the life of two important characters to the construction of the national policy: Mariano Moreno and Antonio Carlos R. Andrada Machado Silva e Araújo. They played a main role during the constitutional debate. At last, we seeked to compreended the questions that allowed the elaboration of a constitutional monarchy and a republic to these societies that sustained their status quo although they drifted apart from their projects.

Donkin, Hazel. "Surrealism, photography and the periodical press : an investigation into the use of photography in surrealist publications (1924-1969) with specific reference to themes of sexuality and their interaction with commercial photographic images of the period." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2010. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/2584/.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the use of photographs in surrealist publications in Paris between 1924 and 1969, analysing how images functioned both in relation to surrealism and a wider cultural, social and political context. The thesis contends that developments in the illustrated press had a substantial impact on surrealist publications and that commercial photographic practices were both exploited and subverted by the group. I defend this assertion by demonstrating how photographers associated with the surrealist movement in its formative years, were closely involved in the process by which the photographic image became a major means of communication. I argue that the surrealists were conscious that photography was central to the circulation of ideas and developed a radical notion of the illustration of text. The thesis examines how photographs used in surrealist publications were integrated into the complex surrealist project and how due to the currency in images in society, the medium offered opportunities for disruption. In each of the five chapters I examine the surrealist deployment of photographic images to articulate cultural and political radicalism. The thesis argues that the photographs published by the surrealists made an important contribution to contemporary discourse on sexuality This thesis makes an original contribution to knowledge as it expands the understanding of photographs published by the surrealist group by exploring their relationship to contemporary commercial images circulating in the press. It analyses works that have been marginalised, many of the images in the first two journals in the inter war period, the images in the illustrated books 1929, Banalité, Le septième face du dé and the images in the post war journals have been neglected as subjects of study.

Abstract:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has continued to receive exposure in national periodicals. This thesis will explore that image from 1982 to 1990. During those years, the church continued to grow in membership and expand its existing programs. National periodicals can assist in assessing the public image of the Church because they help "mould public attitudes by presenting facts and views on issues in exactly the same way at the same time throughout the entire country." In this manner, they help to form the public opinion about the Church. They also reflect existing opinions because magazine publishers cater to what the public is interested in. This study will enhance the reader's understanding of this image by discussing the topics that received the greatest emphasis during that time period. This study is preceded by two theses, one by Adam H. Nielson covering the Church's image from 1970-1981, and the other by Dale P. Pelo, which studied the image of the Church from 1961-1970. Richard O. Cowan presented a doctoral dissertation which covered 1850-1961. This thesis is a continuation of those studies, and implements the same research procedures and methods.

Abstract:
Victorian prisoners were increasingly out of sight due to the ending of public displays of punishment. Although punishment was hidden in the prison, prison life was a frequent subject for representation. In this dissertation, I examine the ways Victorian illustrated newspapers, paintings, and photographs mediated an encounter with prisoners during a time when the prison was closed to outsiders. Reports and images became a significant means by which many people learned about, and defined themselves in relation to, prisoners. Previous scholarship has focused on stereotypes of prisoners that defined them as the “criminal type,” but I argue prisoners were also depicted in more ambiguous ways that aligned them with “respectable” members of society. I focus on images that compare the worlds inside and outside the prison, which reveal instabilities in representations of “the prisoner” and the ways this figure was defined against a societal norm. Such images draw attention to the act of looking at prisoners and often challenge a notion of the prison as a space of one-sided surveillance.

The object of this research is to analyze the content of six Portuguese and Spanish daily sports newspapers: A Bola, Record, O Jogo, Mundo Deportivo, Marca and AS. In order to understand this specific field of journalism, the study attempts to establish the differences and similarities of sports journalism in both countries, a research which was centered on a sample of newspaper articles collected between 15 October and 15 November, 2013. Starting from a historical context, the study moves to a systematic, objective and quantitative analysis of the newspapers’ content and includes several graphics. It is possible to identify a parallel development at editorial and discourse levels as well as in the content of the articles. The study also establishes that the number of newspapers sold in the capital cities is higher than the number of those sold in the second largest cities of both countries. Finally, the study confirms that football is the "beautiful game" and also identifies each newspaper readers with a specific football club and with other sports.

Abstract:
The French Revolution marked an important step in the development of the periodical press. This increase in the importance of the press provoked deep changes within society and allowed for better access to information. The Revolution changed the legal status of the press by ending the system of censorship and privileges of the Old Regime, while at the same time imposing new limits on the transmission of information and opinions. These rapid developments led to new problems for the authorities. The government and its institutions had to position themselves in relation to the press, interact with it, and learn how to utilize it for their own purposes. There were two fields of action in the relations between political actors and the press: firstly, the deliberate distribution of information and propaganda, and secondly, repression and the interruption of the circuit of information. The ways in which information and propaganda were distributed varied: new newspapers were founded, and existing papers received financial aid. Mass subscriptions to newspapers were particularly common. Censorship was never reintroduced during the Revolution, but ‘unofficial’ measures were taken to suppress information. These included the banning of newspapers, the imprisonment of journalists, printers, or booksellers, the interception of newspapers sent by post, repression against street vendors of prints, or legal proceedings against journalists, editors, booksellers, or printers

Laget, Laurie-Anne. Thesis, Paris 3, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA030111.

Full text
Abstract:
Ramón Gómez de la Serna (1888-1963) was the author of a work that introduced in Spain a kind of writing whose singularity was very early underlined by the critics. In 1912, he created the Greguerías, a brief and playful literary form which was immediately commented on for its novelty tinged with subversion. Within a few years, that form spread throughout the Spanish press and was welcomed in a positive way outside the frontiers of the peninsula. Until 1962, Ramón Gómez de la Serna published numbers of these short paragraphs in newspapers or anthologies. He defined them as the alliance of humour and metaphor, and combined there his research into dissonance with a poetical work on our perception of the world. Yet, it is the later form of the greguería that is best known today; very few studies have focused on the literary education of Ramón Gómez de la Serna and raised the issue of the readings which may have influenced the author or o! f the editorial choices which gave birth to the greguerías. The purpose of this study is to reassess the literary position of Ramón Gómez de la Serna within the context of his training, that of the years 1910. The models of writing prevailing then and the vocational dimension the craft took on at the time — shaped by a daily collaboration with newspapers and magazines — were the essential aesthetic foundations of the writer’s future work. In this context, the Ramonian prose sheds a new light on the plural and syncretic nature of what I have called the aesthetic ferment of the years 1910 in Spain

Abstract:
This study hopes to provide the evolving story of the Manileña image through the usage of text and iconography found in print media available in Manila from 1898-1938. Through this process, the narrative of the continuities and changes of the images and representations of the Manileña that were created and portrayed in the periodicals may be seen and understood. This study also seeks to examine the various issues, perspectives and concerns that cropped up due to the changes that occurred. There is a need to understand how media reproduce and socially construct gender. This research hopes to find out the implications of visual culture and its impact on a gendered image in the face of modernity and urbanization. The study will interrogate the intersection of history, gender, media, modernity and urbanization as it plays in the realms of the public sphere, the private sphere and the unnamed realms in between. The study will hopefully add to the understanding of image formation in a colonial context undergoing rapid modernity and urbanization

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the body in political debate during the Romantic period. My original contribution to knowledge is an analysis of a corpus of periodical writing in intense detail, and I track the way in which periodical writing utilises a medical vocabulary and the reasons for this appropriation. I identify the key concern of each popular periodical, and reveal the way in which the editors attempt to achieve their goal by using language borrowed from medical discourse. I also uncover the ways in which periodical writing influenced medicine, by outlining how medical practice was politicised by social and cultural demands. Political essays and letters are the main focus of the thesis, but I also analyse poetry included in the periodical press, paying attention to formal attributes such as article placement. Illustration and marginalia are also considered. I argue that political, social, and cultural agendas shaped the direction in which medical discourse moved. Periodicals have been selected as my primary texts due to their immediacy and highly political nature, and I have selected titles that were prominent in both the literary and political spheres. I conclude that the body becomes a site of political contention in the Romantic period, and is used as an allegory in discussions of systems, power, and resistance.

This work deals with the pedagogical project of Monsignor Álvaro Negromonte, from a set of educational printings published between 1936 and 1964, aimed at different audiences. Recognized among his peers as one of the great leaders of the renewal of religious education in the 1930s, Álvaro Negromonte became deeply involved in the educational debates of his time, producing a wide range of educational printings aimeing as prime targets the school and the families. Organized in different formats, the printings published by Monsignor Álvaro Negromonte for teachers and families are analyzed in this research as part of a Pedagogic Library built over eighteen years, focused also to the renewal of religious teaching. The objective is to understand the points of contact that wove these projects: training of teachers, catechists and education of families, linking them to each other and the larger one, facing to re- Catholicize society. The two classes of printings used by the priest - books and newsletters - addressed to schools and families in this research are understood as cultural objects, taken as units of analysis in its production, considering its form and content. Educational practices analyzed in this study were perceived as cultural practices aimed to set new values and behavior codes, created other representations for the educator, linking the pedagogical contributions of new times to elementary knowledge of the Catholic faith. The two projects hereby analyzed are complementary and point to the importance the woman figure took in Negromontes work. Fostered under the aegis of Catholic Action, the work of the priest passed first by faith education of women that, exercising their role as teachers at school or mothers at their homes, were being trained to work in Brazil ecclesial and social life.

This work aims to investigate the circumstances surrounding the practice and publication of literary translations in the periodical press of the Northeast of Brazil in the mid-nineteenth century, based on the magazines O Archivo (Maranhão, 1846) and Revista Americana (Bahia, 1847-1848). In both magazines, we identified 47 translations of literature. To present this panorama, we treat the corpus based on the theoretical and methodological concept, Cultural Transfer, by Michel Espagne (2012), and the economic and ideological view handled by Pierre Bourdieu through the work of Joseph Jurt (2007). Focusing on the support where these translations were propagated – the magazine – the works of Socorro de Fatima Pacífico Barbosa (2007), Katia Aily Franco de Camargo (2014), and Tania Regina de Luca (2008; 2014) about the periodical press guided us. Initially we present a quantitative corpus analysis based on the work of Lüsebrink and Reichardt (1994), aiming to approach the translation scenery in periodical press of the nineteenth century. Then, we present a descriptive analysis of each literary translations found, having as a starting point the schematic picture adapted from Lambert (2011). Therefore, we investigated the cultural mediation instances through contextual analysis of the translations identified in the two magazines, in association with their respective contexts and source texts, in order to present a mosaic of the foreign cultural memory present in the Northeast of Brazil in the nineteenth century. The work is divided into four chapters: in Chapter 1, we present an introductory look at literature and translation in the context of periodical press in the Northeast of Brazil in the nineteenth century; in Chapter 2 is a brief historical background of the periodical press in the nineteenth century, concerning O Archivo and Revista Americana; in Chapter 3, we present an overview of the translations of literature found in both magazines, exposing a quantitative map of what was translated regarding literature; finally, in Chapter 4, we present a descriptive analysis of the translations of literature found, characterizing the translation practices and strategies, demonstrating the importance of translating for the formation of the cultural and social context and for the formation of the national literature canon.

Modern society places new demands on the level of human development. Preschool education is the leading link that provides the initial formation of intellectually and communicatively developed personality. A special place in children’s periodicals, in our opinion, is given to magazines for preschoolers, which are designed to develop their curiosity and interest in the world around them, broaden their horizons and prepare the child for school.

Abstract:
Against the background of ‘the global resurgence of democracy' (Diamond and Plattner 1996), and focusing particularly on the democratic waves that swept through Africa in the 90s, scholars have acknowledged the central role of the press in the restoration of democratic governance in Africa. The Nigerian press in particular has been touted as Africa's symbol of a liberal press (Seng and Hunt 1986, Ogbondah 1994). It is said to have played a significant role in the battle against military dictatorship, leading to Wole Soyinka's trophy: the press as ‘magnificent and heroic' (Soyinka 1998). Yet in spite of the ‘adversarial and lively outspokenness' of the press (Olukotun 2002, 2010), the military had a sixteen-year reign. How can this paradox be explained? The thesis explores four military regimes during the sixteen-year period focusing on specific events of national significance in each regime, with a view to establishing what role/s the press played in restoring democracy; and whether it deserved the award of ‘magnificent and heroic'. Methodologically it adopts a critical discourse analysis approach (Fairclough 2013, Van Dijk 1991), particularly analysing headlines, news reports, editorials, photographs, political cartoons and articles; across seven national newspapers and two weekly magazines. Additionally it draws on interviews with state officials and editors with knowledge of the periods to provide a further interpretation of the press at particular historical moments. It opens up the issue of a liberal press to suggest that there are serious questions about the press's relation to the various military regimes and thus the degree to which the press really was ‘magnificent and heroic'. Indeed an argument can be made that much of the press was complicit with these regimes and contributed to delaying the realisation of a democratic rule.

In recent months Europe has witnessed intense scrutiny of the phenomenon of the hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants who have arrived in southern Europe largely from the Middle East and other war-torn areas. The pressure of these refugees and migrants has given rise to all sorts of analysis of the strains they represent for social systems and cultural well-being. This thesis aims to investigate the attention paid in representative newspapers from Portugal and the Czech Republic to the issue of language, and to the consequences for the business life of the country or the continent, of such a large influx of refugees and migrants all at once. What are the attitudes towards dealing with large numbers of people speaking different languages? Do the incomers represent only a threat to the business environment, or do they represent an opportunity and a resource, even if in the long term? The thesis will attempt to explore these and other related issues.

Abstract:
Through the filter of the periodical literature intended for juveniles, especially boys, this thesis examines some facets of the Irish sporting culture as it emerged during the “Long Gestation” of Ireland’s independence, i.e. the period prior to the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922, which witnessed the Gaelic cultural revival, the outbreak of the Easter Rising in 1916 and Sinn Féin’s triumph over the Redmondites in the 1918 election. By focusing on this kind of publishing genre, indeed, it is possible to raise a complex network of images, symbols and discourses related to Irish sporting culture. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to presenting the aims and objectives of this study, the literature review, the corpus being analysed, and the methodology. Textual analysis, if mostly focused on the fictional and non-fictional content of the story papers, extends to other bodies of writing: private correspondence, parliamentary debates, government reports, and periodical criticism. The juxtaposed analyses of texts of such a multifarious nature enabled me to understand the prevailing attitudes and socio-cultural mores of the time as well as the political and cultural implications of the rise of a sport system in Ireland. The second part of No Shoneen: Gaelic Games and the Athletic Hero in the Irish Periodical Press thus details the steps that led up to the emergence of an Irish sport system and how Gaelic games came to be cultural signifiers pointing to Ireland’s specificity at home and abroad. Moreover, in this section, I also discuss why the early twentieth century saw the emergence of what can be termed “Athletic Hero” as the last two chapters of this work expound the connection between the rise of the Irish sport system and the political and cultural investment on the youths of Ireland to demonstrate how Gaelic games assisted the Irish in the formation of a new ideal of boyhood. More specifically, whereas the fourth chapter focuses on the conception of the young athlete as the maker of Ireland’s independence and the cornerstone of a new community – a conception revolving around the notion of sporting practice as a form of military preparedness –, the last chapter traces the contours of the idealised masculinity embodied by the young Gaelic athlete. The objective is to show how the athlete’s vigorous body was aptly represented and extolled so as to counteract the stereotypical characterizations of the Irish as inferiors in need of Anglo-Saxon domination.

This dissertation seeks to expand our conception of what constitutes Native American letters by examining how the periodical became a prominent form in Native American literary production in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With its focus on the boarding school, Writing against Erasure provides insight into the context in which students first learned how to make complex and sophisticated choices in print. Within the contested disciplinary space of the boarding school, the periodical press functioned as a site for competing discourses on assimilation. Whereas school authorities used the white-run school newspapers to publicize their programs of cultural erasure, students used the student-run school newspapers to defend and preserve Native American identity and culture in the face of the assimilationist imperatives of the boarding schools and the dominant culture. Writing against Erasure highlights the formative impact of students' experiences with the boarding school press on the periodical practices and rhetorical strategies of two well-known Native American literary figures, Zitkala-Sa and Charles Eastman. By treating the periodical writings of these two prominent boarding school graduates alongside the periodical writings produced by boarding school students while they were still at school, Writing against Erasure provides a literary genealogy that reveals important continuities between these writers' strategic and political uses of the periodical press. Writing against Erasure argues that Native American boarding school students and graduates used the periodical press not to promote the interests of school authorities as some scholars have argued, but rather to preserve their cultural traditions, to speak out on behalf of indigenous interests, and to form a pan-Indian community at the turn of the twentieth century.

Abstract: The disruption of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the four following wars in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Kosovo, were on the news worldwide including Brazil. In this dissertation, the written press coverage of these wars in Brazil is analyzed, particularly the coverage by the Folha de S. Paulo and O Estado de S. Paulo newspapers, based on some initial hypotheses: (a) there is a significant change on the approaches of these conflicts from cold war period to the next period, post-cold war, which abandons progressively a strategic vocabulary, for an increasing culturalistic one; (b) the press starts to emphasize supposed ontological differences among the populations in the conflicts, ratifies an existence of an We versus Them, and indicates an increasing naturalization and apoliticization of the conflicts; (c) the press updates a discursive tradition of representation of the BaIkans. For that, I tried to understand the way the written press works, how the news are produced and how the journalists operate, particularly, the Brazilian correspondents that visited the former Yugoslavia to cover the war. Throughout the research, I noticed the existence of a recurring rhetoric in the press about this wars. An ethnography of the written press - a systematic reading of the main local newspapers, an understanding of the international journalism dynamics, and the interviewing of Brazilian correspondents sent to these different wars - not only ended up confirming part of the hypothesis presented before, but also demonstrating similarities and differences between the journalism and the anthropology itself: some of them related to the use of certain concepts, and others, moreover, related to the way the press reproduces certain categories of alterity

Abstract:
This study examines the character of colonial American newspaper science to understand how and to what extent the newspaper contributed to the movement of information between those engaged in science and the public. It explores the issue of the origins of science and the press in America and characterizes the public role of enlightenment science in articles and advertisements pertaining to matters of health, invention and the natural world. The focus is on the mid-Atlantic region of colonial American newspapers including all the extant issues of the Pennsylvania Gazette, Maryland Gazette, Virginia Gazette, and American Weekly Mercury between the years 1728 to 1765. This study aims at informing the discussions of Enlightenment thought in colonial America and the role the newspaper played in the public acceptance of the processes of natural philosophy. The findings reveal that in the eighteenth century the colonial American newspaper became the textual locus through which the negotiations of what would and would not constitute acceptable public explanations of numerous subjects, including natural phenomena, were played out. Along with the public lecture, the newspaper became a primary device where actors and artifacts made legitimizing natural claims to a larger audience and enlisted allies in both scientific and broader disputes. In this way the American colonies paralleled Britain which had seen an increase in the public witnessing of an empirical natural philosophy and an appeal to economic and social gain for that philosophy since the late seventeenth century. In order to enroll a broader constituency, natural philosophers used the newspaper to argue for the value of rational and empirical exploration and its products in everyday affairs, matters of state, and even entertainment. Despite the negotiation through the pages of the general periodical, and despite the lack of strong differentiation between "virtuosi" and "lay" philosophers, the newspaper seldom became a principle place of exchange for the theory and practice of science between those doing science. With some notable and interesting exceptions, the public infrequently became privy to vanguard scientific theory and scientific disputes or enjoyed direct participation through the newspaper. Nevertheless, in eighteenth-century British America, the drive for public acceptance of natural philosophical explanations by those engaged in its explorations made the representative power of the newspaper critical to the success of science. By promoting an empirical view of the world the newspaper helped create a contemporary science, science communication and a society, that to varying degrees accepted the practices of science.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the emergence of literary history and criticism in the Americas during the eighteenth century. It focuses upon the study of 1.) Natural history as a matrix of literary history and criticism; 2.) The geopolitical functions of literary history and criticism in the periodical press; and 3.) The recovery of manuscripts as a residual product of modernity. Texts associated with a hegemonic Enlightenment, such as “Disertación sobre el derecho público universal” by Francisco Javier de Uriortúa, are analyzed. Next, we study modern historical-critical thought as emphasized in the periodical press of Bogotá and Quito. Finally, the circulation of manuscripts is studied as an indicator of the participation of Spanish American authors in discussions about the Enlightenment. For the latter, the dissertation analyzes the development of theories of good taste in El Nuevo Luciano de Quito by Eugenio Espejo and in the Plan elementál del buen gusto en todo genéro de materias by Manuel del Socorro Rodríguez de la Victoria. The study challenges the epistemological conflict provoked by the handwritten condition of a considerable portion of scholarship from the eighteenth century, in which the projects of an American modernity become subjugated by the power of European print.

Blake, Peter. "George Augustus Sala : the personal style of a public writer." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2011. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/6943/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the work of the nineteenth century journalist George Augustus Sala. Previous studies of Sala have focused upon the biographical aspects of his life at the expense of critical analysis of the prolific contributions he made to newspapers and periodicals. This thesis will readdress this imbalance by a close reading of Sala's visual and textual output together with an examination of the contemporary debates and issues surrounding his work. In particular it will suggest that Sala's journalistic style was a product of the very different mediums he was working in, and how this personal style along with his innovations in form would influence the New Journalism at the end of the century. For so long a misunderstood and neglected figure, this thesis will endeavour to reposition Sala at the centre of nineteenth-century media culture rather than at its margins. My research links Sala's role as an engraver, illustrator, and scene-painter to his career as an essayist for Dickens's Household Words. It will demonstrate how this in turn influenced his experiments with the form of the novel which would impact on his work as the pre-eminent Special Correspondent of the Daily Telegraph. In an age of rapid press and cultural transformation my research will highlight Sala's engagement with theories of urban modernity and commodity culture; gambling, finance capitalism and the uncertainty of modern life; the culture of literary bohemia and the plight of the poor and the oppressed; and the role of the journalist. I will pursue Sala's commitment to sensationalism and realism in his novels, and his fluctuating opinions on race, slavery and imperialism in his travel writing. This thesis will also shed light on Sala's relationship with some of the most important journalists, authors, and artists of the nineteenth century – Charles Dickens, William Thackeray, Mary Braddon, WP Frith, Henry Vizetelly, Frederick Greenwood and W.T. Stead. Necessarily interdisciplinary in focus, my research draws on critical work by cultural historians and literary theorists like Tim Barringer, P.D. Edwards, Mary Gluck, Lynda Nead, Deborah Nord, Matthew Rubery, Richard Sennett, Ralph Straus, Catherine Waters and Ruth Yeazell, among others. By examining contemporary periodicals, newspapers and letters this thesis will contribute to the burgeoning field of nineteenth-century print culture, while adding to the knowledge and understanding of the man many considered to be the 'beau-ideal' of a journalist.

Phillips, Noel Jason. "Diachronic representational change surrounding queer identities in British newspapers between 1976 and 2005." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2014. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/51477/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the changing use of language in British newspapers that was used to describe queer people, between 1976 and 2005. It brings together a broad spectrum of sociological, linguistic and media theorists to investigate how such change was driven and describe some of the social consequences. The discussion is framed through the analysis of ifferent facets of the queer community's experience which are being represented in the press over that time frame such as: the closet, queer protest and normalization. Whilst at the same time, aspects of the researcher's personal biography are woven into the writing to solidify the connections between theory, representation and individual experience. This then is a multi-theoretical study using changing language and representation as a methodology with its heart in media and language studies, sociology, queer studies and history. The research is focused upon newspaper articles taken from national, regional and queer newspapers and each was focused upon as aspect of the queer experience. The main case studies included comparisons between different papers, The Gay News Trial in 1977 and protests concerning section 28 in 1988. Later, it explores power and the closet across the period and ends by utilising articles involving queer youth, queer family and queer professionals. The analysis reveals that we are living in a new Foucaultian episteme; new age with a new spirit this developed out of the protests and campaigns of the 1970s and 1980s which led to a compression upon language driving linguistic change. This compression led the normalization of queer people within society.

Zenerian, Eleftherios. "Work and sociality in Brighton's new media industry." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2014. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/51606/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the relationships that form among practitioners in the new media industry – focussing on a particular locale, Brighton, UK. An aim is to understand the meanings that work and peer relationships have for practitioners. Another is to explore how peer relationships affect practitioners' careers. Through the use of qualitative methods – semi-structured and unstructured interviews, and ethnographic observation – the research highlights the importance of locality and of interaction in shaping the meanings and practices around work and sociality in the new media industry. Drawing on Bourdieu's ideas on field, habitus and capital it is suggested that the meanings practitioners attach to work are reflected in the aspirations inscribed in their habitus and the position they occupy within a geographically specific new media field. It is also suggested that social relationships among peers are constructed through interaction within Brighton's new media community where personal biographies, industrial and local cultures structure and reproduce each other. The importance of interpreting practices within intersections of fields, in which people are embedded, is also emphasised. Drawing on Goffman's ideas on the social organisation of co-presence, the logic of the new media field and the strategies that practitioners utilise – which are reflected in the ways practitioners manage their personal preserves inside a co-working organisation – is described. How career opportunities differ based on the position people occupy in the industry and how the use of different types of capitals effect career changes is also demonstrated. This study contributes to the research literature on the clustering of new media industries, to research looking at work and employment in the new media industry and, finally, to the literature on the networking practices of new media practitioners.

Outen, Gemma. "The Women's Total Abstinence Union and periodical Wings, 1892-1910 : a study of gender and politics." Thesis, Edge Hill University, 2017. http://repository.edgehill.ac.uk/10377/.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1893, an internal schism occurred within the British Women’s Temperance Association (BWTA), creating the National British Women’s Temperance Association (NBWTA) and the Women’s Total Abstinence Union (WTAU). The Women’s Total Abstinence Union (WTAU) has since received very limited critical attention, having been historically dismissed as a conservative organisation, only concerned with temperance work, when compared to the more radical National British Women’s Temperance Association (NBWTA). Via a critical examination of the WTAU’s periodical, Wings, from 1892 to 1910, and associated Union materials, this project interrogates the presumptions made concerning the apparently conservative nature, aims and actions of the group and the women within. Contributing to the burgeoning research area of print and periodical culture this project reflects on how women managed the contradictions posed by gender – which shaped women as private domestic individuals – and political identity – when encouraged to undertake reform work outside of the safety of the private sphere. This thesis provides an original contribution to knowledge through utilising an interdisciplinary methodological approach combining periodical culture with a study of community and gender. Its main contribution lies in the study of a neglected group, the WTAU, and their unexplored periodical, Wings. Significant research has centred around radical and/or conservative constructions of nineteenth-century femininity but the voice of the quiet majority in between, and their everyday experiences, remains largely underexplored. This project examines gender constructions within female reform work, specifically temperance, and argues that Union women used a respectable area of social reform work in a potentially progressive way. The WTAU was not solely conservative, nor was it instead radical, rather, its members, aims and actions can be placed on a sliding scale, encompassing conservatism and progressivism alongside radicalism. Moreover, this thesis suggests that this should be replicated for other female reform workers and groups more broadly, in order to provide a better understanding of the sector and how issues of middle-class, feminine respectability influenced women within. It also provides a contribution to knowledge in its methodology, utilising a three layered approach to address the complex issue of readership. It focuses firstly on a broad implied readership, secondly, using census research on a cross-section of Union membership, and finally, undertakes two case-study analyses of Union women on opposing sides of the respectability debate. In examining the Union and its members in three ways, this thesis provides a new way 7 of examining female reform work and periodical readership, and uncovers the complexity of the WTAU, situated within a wider connected world of campaign, print and platform.

Calderwood, Paul. "Freemasonry and the press in twentieth century Britain." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2010. http://research.gold.ac.uk/6394/.

Full text
Abstract:
The following pages contain a study of the British media coverage of freemasonry in the twentieth century. They consider how and why the public image of freemasonry changed from that of a highly-respected elite organisation, at the centre of public life in 1900, to a position on the fringes, regarded by many with suspicion and disapproval in the 1990s. They focus on national newspapers only. This thesis describes how the press projected a positive message of the organisation for almost 40 years, based on a mass of news, which I believe - and show - emanated from the organisation itself (making it an unexpected pioneer in modern public relations practice). It concludes that the change of image and public regards which occurred during the twentieth century was due, mainly, to Masonic withdrawal from the public sphere. It considers - and finds wanting - the suggestion that this withdrawal was a response to Fascist persecution and it offers a number of additional explanations. Freemasonry's reluctance to engage with the media after 1939 powerfully assisted its critics, who grew in strength as a result of developments within the media and the churches. Within the media, greater competition spawned a more challenging form of journalism and accelerated the decline of deference. The rise of secularism and religious pluralism in Britain provided Christianity with increases competition and led some adherents to re-define freemasonry and treat it as a rival. "Conspiracy culture" remained strong throughout the period, rendering the secrecy of freemasonry a major handicap to public understanding. The history of freemasonry in twentieth century Britain is largely an unexplored field and, in examining the fraternity's media profile, this study also illuminates the organisation's collisions with nationalism, communism, and state welfare provision.
