Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background Excessive sugar intake is now recognized as a key risk factor for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. In contrast, evidence on the sugar–cancer link is less consistent. Experimental data suggest that sugars could play a role in cancer etiology through obesity but also through inflammatory and oxidative mechanisms and insulin resistance, even in the absence of weight gain. Objective The objective was to study the associations between total and added sugar intake and cancer risk (overall, breast, and prostate), taking into account sugar types and sources. Methods In total, 101,279 participants aged >18 y (median age, 40.8 y) from the French NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort study (2009–2019) were included (median follow-up time, 5.9 y). Sugar intake was assessed using repeated and validated 24-h dietary records, designed to register participants’ usual consumption for >3500 food and beverage items. Associations between sugar intake and cancer risk were assessed by Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for known risk factors (sociodemographic, anthropometric, lifestyle, medical history, and nutritional factors). Results Total sugar intake was associated with higher overall cancer risk (n = 2503 cases; HR for quartile 4 compared with quartile 1: 1.17; 95% CI: 1.00, 1.37; Ptrend = 0.02). Breast cancer risks were increased (n = 783 cases; HRQ4vs.Q1 = 1.51; 95% CI: 1.14, 2.00; Ptrend = 0.0007). Results remained significant when weight gain during follow-up was adjusted for. In addition, significant associations with cancer risk were also observed for added sugars, free sugars, sucrose, sugars from milk-based desserts, dairy products, and sugary drinks (Ptrend ≤ 0.01). Conclusions These results suggest that sugars may represent a modifiable risk factor for cancer prevention (breast in particular), contributing to the current debate on the implementation of sugar taxation, marketing regulation, and other sugar-related policies. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03335644.

There is information about the consumption of sugar in Turan in the pre-Islamic period, the import of sugar from India to Turan by trade caravans, and sugar factories built during the reign of Amir Temur and the Temurids. Special attention is paid to the construction of the first sugar factories in the country and the history of sugar production during the colonial period.

Abstract:
Sugar sorghum is mainly used for green fodder, haylage and silage. The accumulation of sugars occurs throughout the growing season. The relevance of the study is to identify a high-yielding variety or hybrid of sugar sorghum containing a large amount of sugars, which are later used for the manufacture of feed. The purpose of the study: to assess the impact of agrotechnical techniques on the feed evaluation of sugar sorghum. Tasks: to consider the dynamics of the accumulation of sugars in the stems of sugar sorghum; to calculate the yield of sugar from the stems of sugar sorghum; to determine the biochemical composition and gross energy of the green mass of sugar sorghum. The experience is three-factor in four-fold repetition. The experimental fi were located in the LLC “Kuznetsovskaya” Agricultural Complex of the Ilovlinsky district. The research period is 2009...2015. The research provided for the study of the nutritional value of sugar sorghum (crude protein, fat, protein, sugar, BEV). When determining the dynamics of the accumulation of sugar sorghum, the best indicator was on the variant of the joint use of the biostimulator of growth Lignohumate and mineral fertilizer on the hybrid Slavyansk homestead. For dump tillage, the average accumulation of sugars on this hybrid varied from 5.5 to 18.4% of dry matter, for zero tillage – 6.1 to 18.65%. The amount of sugar yield was influenced by the yield and concentration of sugars in the stems. The largest content was on the hybrid Slavic household. For dump and zero tillage, the best option was against the background of the combined use of a growth biostimulator and mineral fertilizer, amounting to 11.3 and 13.3 t/ha, respectively. When further determining the biochemical composition of sorghum, the best indicators for the content of crude protein, fat, fi and ash were on the Debut variety. On the Slavic fi VS variety and the Slavic homestead hybrid, these indicators had average values. The amount of nitrogen-free extractive substances contained more on the Slavic homestead hybrid, averaging 64.9%.

Abstract:
This article examines the contrasting evolution in sugar refining in Jamaica and Barbados incentivized by Mercantilist policies, changes in labor systems, and competition from foreign sugar revealing the role of Caribbean plantations as a site for experimentation from the eighteenth through mid-nineteenth century. Britain's seventeenth- and eighteenth-century protectionist policies imposed high duties on refined cane-sugar from the colonies, discouraging colonies from exporting refined sugar as opposed to raw. This system allowed Britain to retain control over trade and commerce and provided exclusive sugar sales to Caribbean sugar plantations. Barbadian planters swiftly gained immense wealth and political power until Jamaica and other islands produced competitive sugar. The Jamaica Assembly invested heavily in technological innovations intended to improve efficiency, produce competitive sugar in a market that eventually opened to foreign competition such as sugar beet, and increase profits to undercut losses from duties. They valued local knowledge, incentivizing everyone from local planters to chemists, engineers, and science enthusiasts to experiment in Jamaica and publish their findings. These publications disseminated important findings throughout Britain and its colonies, revealing the significance of the Caribbean as a site for local experimentation and knowledge.

Abstract:
This dissertation is about commercial agriculture in nineteenth-century Liberia. Based primarily on the archives of the American Colonization Society (founder of Liberia), it examines the impact of environmental and demographic constraints on an agrarian settler society from 1822 to the 1890s. Contrary to the standard interpretation, which linked the poor state of commercial agriculture to the settlers' disdain for cultivation, this dissertation argues that the scarcity of labor and capital impeded the growth of commercial agriculture. The causes of the scarcity were high mortality, low immigration and the poverty of the American "Negroes" who began to settle Liberia in 1822. Emigration to Liberia meant almost certain death and affliction for many immigrants because they encountered a new set of diseases. Mortality was particularly high during the early decades of colonization. From 1822 to 1843, about 48 percent of all immigrants died of various causes, usually within their first year. The bulk of the deaths is attributed to malaria. There was no natural increase in the population for this early period and because American "Negroes" were unenthusiastic about relocation to Liberia, immigration remained sparse throughout the century. Low immigration, combined with the high death rate, deprived the fledgling colony of its potential human resource, especially for the cultivation of labor-intensive crops, like sugar cane and coffee. Moreover, even though females constituted approximately half of the settlers, they seldom performed agricultural labor. The problem of labor was compounded by the scarcity of draft animals. Liberia is in the region where trypanosomiasis occurs. The disease is fatal to large livestock. Therefore, animal-drawn plows, common in the United States, were never successfully transplanted in Liberia. Besides, the dearth of livestock obstructed the development of the sugar industry since many planters depended on oxen-powered mills because they could not afford to buy the more expensive steam engine mills. Finally, nearly half of the immigrants were newly emancipated slaves. Usually these former bondsmen arrived in Liberia penniless. Consequently, they lacked the capital to invest in large-scale plantations. The other categories of immigrants (e.g., those who purchased their freedom), were hardly better off than the emancipated slaves.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine the ways that the success of the Dutch Empire at the turn of the twentieth century was represented and celebrated in the photographic albums of Dutch sugar industrialists in Java. It aims to show how the photographic practices that developed in the colony in parallel with its industrialisation informed the ways that the colony was imagined in the metropolis and the colony. Whether social portraiture, topographic studies or depictions of industrial machinery and infrastructure, the photographs of the sugar industry were part and parcel of a topical vernacular tradition that generated distinct visual themes in the development of popular photographic genres, and which reflected the cultural hybridity and social stratification of the local sugar world. This analysis is pursued through close reading of the photographic albums of the Pietermaat-Soesman family from the Kalibagor sugar factory in Java. These albums exemplify how the family albums of sugar industrialists retained the familiarity and cult value of the family album whilst illustrating the values and attitudes of the colonial industry and society. What is more, the Pietermaat-Soesman albums underline the significance of the albums' materiality; their story is not only one of images, but also a story of objects. I specifically pay attention to the role of photographers and commercial photo studios in the formulation of the pictorial commonplace of the sugar industry. It is the collaboration between sugar industrialists and colony-based photographers that reveals the social necessity, ideological constraints, pictorial conventions and cultural idioms of colonial industry and society in the Dutch East Indies. Largely understudied in both the Dutch and Indonesian histories of photography, this material, I argue, may problematise the ideological premises of ‘colonial' photography.

This thesis explores visual representations of British West Indian sugar in relation to the African slave trade practiced during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. During this time, sugar played a vital role to the lives of both European and non-Europeans as it was a source of great wealth for many and became transformed into one of the most demanded and widely consumed commodity. From the earliest days of British colonization, the cultivation and production of sugar in the Caribbean has been inextricably linked with the trade in African slaves to provide free labor for plantation owners and planters. This thesis considers how European artists visually represented sugar in its various forms---as an object for botanical study, as landscape and as consumable commodity---and in so doing, constructed specific ideas about the African slave body and the use of African slave labor that reflected personal and imperial agendas and ideologies.

Christine Jorgensen is the first known American citizen undergo sexual reassignment surgery. After her medical operations in Denmark in 1952, during which George Jorgensen Jr., a twenty-six year old man from the Bronx, New York, became Christine Jorgensen, an attractive, feminine woman, Jorgensen returned home to face the curiosity and scrutiny of the American public. As the “first celebrity transsexual," Jorgensen sparked public controversy by questioning the gender expectations that structured society in mid-twentieth century America. Jorgensen’s gender presentation closely aligned to the idealized standards of womanhood reinforced by institutional forces during the 1950s. Due to the amount of public scrutiny she faced after her transition, Jorgensen had to conform to these expectations entirely in order to achieve social acceptance. Examining Jorgensen’s gender expression critically exposes the social limits for expression of gender as well as what forces were responsible for placing these limits on women.

This research analyzed the establishment of the Miriri mill during the period of colonial Brazilian history and its contribution to the formation of the Captaincy of Paraíba, given that the foundations of the Hereditary Captaincies were part of the entrepreneurial logic of the Portuguese Crown in the conquest of overseas territories. We sought to discuss the strategic importance of this engenho for the creation of the captaincies in the north of the colony. Furthermore, we can see that the plans to use the sugar cane mills on the banks of the main rivers in Paraíba were part of the commercial dynamics of the first centuries of the construction of the Captaincies for the occupation of the territory, and in this context the religious orders played a fundamental role in their implementation, which, in the case of the Miriri mill, the religious of São Bento played a leading role.

On taking diet history he consumed red meat without restriction.No much physical activity.Consumed high starch diet.Diagnosed of Prediabetes. After one month of nutrition consultation; Lost 3kg through a low starch high protein diet. Exercised moderately by walking 30-45 minutes thrice a week. After four months there was drastic improvement.Lost Up to 8kg. B] Patient P[female] In January 2023 had 104 kgs.Had Random blood sugar of 10.2mmols, HbA1C 5.8%. She had been eating one banana everyday for breakfast.Consumed a lot of matoke and potatoes in her meals occasionally. Did not exercise. Diagnosed with Prediabetes and hypertension.Triglycerides were elevated. After one month of nutrition follow up, she had lost 5kg.Random blood sugar dropped to 6.4mmols C]Patient M[MALE] On the visit to the clinic ,he weighed 145 kg, Random blood sugar was 8.4mmols. Consumed red meat daily of measurable amounts.No exercise at all since most of his work is involved with lots of driving to work.Was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes,Hypertension, Dyslipidemia. After 2 months of close nutrition monitoring, Random blood sugar improved drastically.Weight dropped to 136kg. Conclusion of the study: From the three patients, moderate exercise has really improved their health to greater heights.Helped increase insulin sensitivity ,we opine as a result blood sugar levels drop. Cutting down on animal protein consumption such as red meat and eggs.Has lowered triglycerides and total cholesterol levels. Consumption of low carb diet and exercise contributes to weight loss Regulating the food system, especially on consumption, significantly promotes a healthy lifestyle. Abstract:
Bio-derived fuels have received significant attention for their potential to reduce the consumption of petroleum-based liquid fuels, either through blending or direct use. Bio-feedstocks that employ algae, in particular heterotrophic microalgae, which convert sustainable plant sugars into renewable oils are especially attractive because the sugar that feeds this process can come from many sources — from sugarcane to corn, and even waste biomass, also known as cellulosic sugars. The microalgae grow in the dark and transforms sugar into nearly any oil type for almost any purpose anywhere, all while drastically compressing production time, from months and years to a matter of days. Much of the work in this area has focused on fuel production technologies. Little research has been reported on the combustion performance of algae-derived fuels, with most of the effort being directed to more system-level studies associated with combustion in engines. In this paper, we report the results of experiments that address some more fundamental multiphase combustion characteristics of algae-derived fuels relevant for spray combustion, namely a configuration involving a single isolated burning droplet. Experimental conditions are created that promote near spherical symmetry such that the gas flow arises primarily through the evaporation process (i.e., stationary droplets are ignited by spark discharge in stagnant air in the standard atmosphere and the droplet burning history is recorded in a free-fall facility that minimizes the influence of buoyant convection). The combustion symmetry that results, in which the droplet and flame are concentric spheres, facilitates the understanding of the combustion process while providing useful validation data for basic models of droplet burning that assume one-dimensional gas transport. Experiments were performed using algae-derived renewable diesel, and its performance was compared to #2 diesel fuel and a mixture of algal renewable diesel/#2 diesel (0.5 v/v). Additionally, the results of detailed chemical analysis are reported where it is shown that the composition of the algae-based diesel that was employed in the experiments was comprised of a complex mixture of aromatics and normal alkanes. The highly sooting propensity of these components resulted in droplet flames being luminous and producing soot during the burning history. A comparison of the flame brightness suggests that the sooting propensities are in the order of #2 diesel > renewable diesel #2 diesel blend > algae renewable diesel, which is consistent with observations of the sooting dynamics from back-lit droplet images. In spite of this difference in sooting propensities, algal renewable diesel droplets were found to have burning rates that are very close to #2 diesel and the mixture. Furthermore, the relative position of the flame to the droplet was almost indistinguishable for the fuels examined. These results suggest that algae renewable diesel could potentially be considered a drop-in replacement for conventional diesel fuel, or at the least serve as a useful additive to reduce the consumption of petroleum-based #2 diesel fuel.

Introduction: Female adnexal tumour of probable wolffian origin (FATWO), is a rare neoplasm arising within the leaves of a broad ligament or hanging from it or a fallopian tube. It is considered a tumour of low malignant potential which shares similar histological and immunochemical features with mesonephric remnants. Case: Here we present a case repot of a 40 years old, nulliparous female who presented with acute pain abdomen and fever since 2 days. Her LMP was 30.09.2015 and her past menstrual cycles were irregular. She was nulliparous with history of infertility. In past medical history revealed her to be a known diabetic for 5 years, with uncontrolled blood sugars. Patient was hemodynamically stable. On per abdominal examination there was generalized tenderness all over the abdomen with guarding and rigidity. On per speculum examination vaginal discharge was noted with unhealthy cervix. Per vaginal examination revealed a tender mass of approximately 8 cm × 6 cm was felt on left fornix. All her base line investigations were normal. The salient investigations like CA-125 35.60 IU/L, CEA 3.46, Beta-HCG 2.29 were normal. On imaging, MRI showed a well defined solid cum cystic space occupying lesion of 9 cm × 8 cm arising from left adnexa with evidence of right hemorrhagic adnexal cyst 6 cm × 7 cm and hydro/hematosalpinx noted. There was well defined space occupying lesion in the pelvis on the left of the uterus which is likely a broad ligament leiomyoma. Diagnosis of acute abdomen was made with adnexal mass probably infectious in origin. Injectable antibiotics were started. In view of acute pain abdomen decision for surgical intervention was taken. Laparoscopic findings revealed bilateral ovarian abscess with left sided broad ligament mass (solid consistency) probably leiomyoma. Right tube and ovary were normal. Drainage of tuboovarian abscess with left salpingo-oophorectomy with right salpingectomy with adhesiolysis was done and sent for histopathology. HPE reported Female adnexal tumour of probable wolffian origin (FATWO) which was positive for vimentin and CD10, possibly arising from left sided broad ligament. Patient underwent radical hysterectomy with omentectomy with appendicectomy was done.in view of FATWO. Conclusion: Female adnexal tumour of probable wolffian origin (FATWO), is a rare neoplasm which is usually considered as benign, although in some cases metastasis on recurrences have been reported even after a long interval following the initial diagnosis. Pre-operative diagnosis of FATWO is very difficult because of the rarity of the disease and paucity of the literature available.

Abstract:
The performance of two refinements (non-equilibrium and non-linear) to the Low-Reynolds-Number Launder and Sharma (1974) k-ε–turbulence model in the framework of a turbomachinery Navier-Stokes code is evaluated for subsonic and transonic compressor cascades at design and off-design conditions. The non-equilibrium treatment originally developed by Rodi (1972) for extending the standard high Re-number k-ε–model to account for the imbalance of production and dissipation in far-field wakes has been applied, in combination with the well-established Kato and Launder (1993) modification, to the entire flow field by extending the scaling of the eddy viscosity to the production term of turbulent kinetic energy in its transport equation. Accounting for non-equilibrium (spectral) effects such as non-local strain history in adverse pressure gradients has been found to be essential a) in predicting early separation on the DCA blade of the subsonic compressor cascade at design conditions and b) in obtaining a more accurate position of a swallowed shock in the transonic compressor cascade at off-design. The former improvement has resulted in a better prediction of the flow exit angle and the latter is essential in capturing the physics of the shock/boundary-layer interaction but further refinements are required to improve the overall flow field and hence loss predictions. The potential of the cubic two-equation non-linear stress-strain model extension developed by Suga (1995) has been investigated. This is shown to provide a better baseline for non-equilibrium modeling than the Kato and Launder modified k-ε–model, since it accounts additionally for the misalignment of turbulence and strain tensor principal axes, streamline curvature and partially for non-equilibrium effects at very little additional computational cost. The non-linear model is found to demonstrate the correct trends, though it requires recalibration over a wider range of turbomachinery flows.
