Full text
Abstract:
The strain rate sensitivity and short-term relaxation behavior of Type 304 stainless steel were investigated in the uniaxial strain rate jump tests with intermittent periods of relaxation at room temperature and at 650°C. At room temperature material exhibited conventional strain rate sensitivity and no strain rate history effect. The high-temperature experimental results revealed a complex and dramatically different material behavior. At 650°C the pattern of strain rate sensitivity was not set as soon as the plastic flow was fully established, but continued to evolve with the further straining in the plastic range. Test results indicate that at 650°C the material may exhibit a strain rate history effect. Both at room temperature and at 650° C the relaxation behavior was independent of the stress and/or strain level at the beginning of the relaxation, but depended nonlinearly on the strain rate preceding the relaxation test. Prior aging had no significant influence on the rate-dependent material response. The irregular material behavior at 650° C is attributed to dynamic strain aging as indicated by serrated stress-strain curves (the Portevin-LeChatelier effect).

Abstract:
7548 Background: Cases with pure ground-glass opacity (GGO) are increasing with the use of computed tomography (CT). In some cases, pure GGO on follow-up CT may represent tumor enlargement or the presence of solid components. We evaluated the natural progression of pure GGO lesions during a long-term follow-up period of more than 2 years. Methods: We retrospectively investigated 95 patients with pure GGO lesions detected between February 2003 and December 2010, in whom these lesions were monitored using CT for more than 2 years. Results: The median follow-up period was 64.7 months (range, 24–114 months). During the follow-up period, areas showing GGO increased in size or appeared to have solid components in 49 patients (group 1) and showed no change in 46 patients (group 2). We compared patient characteristics and tumor properties between the 2 groups. Mean CT attenuation values of the tumors differed significantly between groups 1 (-639.9 ± 88.9 HU) and 2 (-709.2 ± 60.9 HU). In contrast, no significant differences were noted with regard to age, gender, smoking history, lung cancer history, tumor size, and total numbers of GGO lesions between the 2 groups. The difference in the time to tumor growth according to the initial mean CT attenuation value was estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method. The growth incidence at 114 months for lesions with a mean CT attenuation value of -650 HU or more (n = 35) and less than -650 HU (n = 60) were estimated to be 96% and 48%, respectively. The difference between the 2 Kaplan–Meier curves was statistically significant (p < 0.0001). The usefulness of the mean CT attenuation value in predicting the growth of GGO lesions was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic analysis. The sensitivity and specificity was 63% and 87%, respectively, for a mean CT attenuation cutoff value of -650 HU. The area under the curve was 0.76. Conclusions: Many pure GGO lesions have potential for growth as seen during long-term follow-up. CT attenuation is useful in predicting the growth of GGO lesions.

Abstract:
Brief information about the history of the discovery of the large Pioner gold deposit in the Amur province is given. The main features of the geological structure of the deposit, located at the contact of the multiphase granitoid intrusion of the Early Cretaceous age and terrigenous rocks of the Middle-Late Jurassic, are shown. Ore bodies are linear stockworks of silicified and carbonated rocks with gold sulfide mineralization. Gold is both free in the form of large, small and micron-sized particles, and in bound form in pyrite. In common ores, its fineness ranges from 650 to 880 units, in rich ores it rises to 870 - 915‰.

Abstract The National Association of Forensic Economics (NAFE) has approximately 650 members across the United States and in other countries. While the association has been an active group at the annual meetings of the Allied Social Science Association (ASSA) and at other regional meetings of economists, the growth of NAFE in terms of longevity and finances has allowed the organization to develop a more professional presence for its academic and practitioner members. This paper will update the original history of NAFE authored by Michael L. Brookshire in the Litigation Economics Review in 2003 which covered the period from NAFE's inception in 1986 through 2001.

Completed excavations at this important Preclassic Maya site have produced 350 m2 of Middle Preclassic (1200-400 B. C.) deposits dug to bedrock; a continuous section 47 m long through the Preclassic deposits documents the architectural history of the site. Nine more Middle Preclassic burials, the remains of earth- and plaster-floored houses with associated yard surfaces, and a chultun chamber containing well-preserved plant remains document economic and ritual behavior in the Swasey and Bladen phases (1200-650 B. Abstract:
Chapter 1 sets out the nature of the four main sources from Peterborough on which this thesis is based. Two early-twelfth- and mid-thirteenth-century cartularies contain faithful copies of forged and genuine texts, dealing with events from the seventh century onwards. Two early- and mid-twelfth-century chronicles used some imported sources, but contain much accurate local information. Chapter 2 examines the early history of Medeshamstede, as Peterborough was known until the late-tenth century. Medeshamstede was a vital component in Mercian religion from foundation to the late-ninth century. Chapter 3 considers the nature of the primary sources for the tenth-century restoration of Medeshamstede as Peterborough. Chapter 4 considers Peterborough's foundation, during the tenth-century monastic reformation, and nature as a monastic institution: an important component in royal strategy towards uniting the kingdom, it was a distinguished house from the outset, and housed an important monastic school. Chapter 5 considers Peterborough's history from foundation to the Norman Conquest, largely in terms of themes established in Chapter 4: relations with leading churchmen and noblemen indicate distinguished status and a role in unifying the kingdom up to 1066.

Abstract:
This cumulative dissertation covers the conceptual foundations and historical evolution of various aspects in accounting. The first article discusses the conceptual framework of the U.S. standard setter FASB and shows that the evolution of the U.S. GAAP conceptual framework in the 1970s and 1980s was considerably influenced by economic factors. The second manuscript employs a conditional-normative approach to analyze the 2010 joint conceptual framework of the international and the U.S. standard setter, in particular the qualitative characteristics of useful financial information. The paper shows that the qualitative characteristics are not a sufficient basis for developing accounting standards. The third article focuses on the regulatory history of asset valuation in Germany and explains regulatory changes by socio-economic and political events. The fourth and final article contains a historical-critical analysis of the concept of accountability, which forms the basis of accounting. The article analyzes accountability at a German university during the Nazi regime and illustrates the limits of the concept

Kosygina, Larisa Vladimirovna. "The Russian migration regime and migrants' experiences : the case of non-Russian nationals from former Soviet republics." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2010. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/650/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how the Russian migration regime is reflected in migrants' experiences and identities. The conceptual framework developed in the thesis is informed by the theory of structuration. On the basis of this theory and the analysis of primary empirical data, the thesis seeks to refine the understanding of the concepts of 'migration regime', 'social exclusion' and 'territorialisation' of identity. The empirical research conducted for the thesis focuses on the period 2002-2009 and on the experiences and identities of a particular group of migrants, namely, former Soviet citizens from former republics of the USSR, who are currently living in post-Soviet Russia without Russian citizenship. The thesis explores and analyses, on the one hand, the structures which constitute the Russian migration regime and, on the other, the stories told by interviewed migrants about their lives in Russia. The thesis argues that the current migration regime of the Russian Federation represents 'a differentiated system of othering' and shows that this system is informed by two processes - nation-building and racialisation. It also argues that differentiations institutionalised in the Russian migration regime affect the social exclusion of migrants and through this the 'territorialisation' of their identities.

Abstract:
Abstract G115 is a novel ferritic heat resistant steel developed by CISRI in the past decade. It is an impressive candidate material to make tubes, pipes, and forgings for advanced ultra super critical (A-USC) fossil fired power plants used for the temperature scope from 600°C to 650°C. The successful development of G115 extends the upper application temperature limitation of martensitic steel from 600°C to about 650°C. This breakthrough is imperative for the design and construction of 610°C to 650°C A-USC fossil fired power plants, from the viewpoint of the material availability and economics of coal fired power plant designs. This paper introduces the development history and progress of G115 steel. The strengthening mechanism of the novel martensitic steel is briefly discussed, and the optimized chemical composition and mechanical properties of G115 steel are described. The details of industrial trials of G115 tube and pipe at BaoSteel in the past years are reviewed, with the emphasis on the microstructure evolution during aging and creep testing. These tests clearly show that the microstructure of G115 steel is very stable up to the temperature of 650°C. Correspondingly, the comprehensive mechanical properties of G115 steel are very good. The creep rupture time is longer than 17000 hours at the stress of 120MPa and at the temperature of 650°C and 25000+ hours at the stress of 100MPa and at the temperature of 650°C, which is about 1.5 times higher than that of P92 steel. At the same time, the oxidation resistance of G115 steel is a little bit better than that of P92 steel. If G115 steel is selected to replace P92 pipes at the temperature scope from 600°C to 650°C, the total weight of the pipe can be reduced by more than 50% and the wall thickness of the pipe can be reduced up to about 55%. In addition, the upper application temperature limitation of G115 steel is about 30°C higher than that of P92 steel. Thus, G115 steel is a strong candidate material for the manufacturing of 600+°C advanced ultra-super-critical (A-USC) fossil fuel power plants in China and elsewhere.

Abstract:
Thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) crack growth modelling has been conducted on Inconel 718 with dwell time at maximum load. A history dependent damage model taking dwell damage into account, developed under isothermal conditions, has been extended for TMF conditions. Parameter determination for the model is carried out on isothermal load controlled tests at 550–650°C for surface cracks, which later have been used to extrapolate parameters used for TMF crack growth. Further, validation of the developed model is conducted on a notched specimen subjected to strain control at 50–550°C. Satisfying results are gained within reasonable scatter level compared for test and simulated number of cycles to failure.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Stress-relief annealing is an indispensable processing step for non-oriented electrical steel (NOES) sheets to achieve optimal magnetic properties. The annealing microstructure and texture are not only dependent on the annealing conditions, but also on the prior thermomechanical processing history. To investigate the effect of deformation mode on the recrystallization behavior, a NOES containing 0.9 wt% Si was cold rolled by skew rolling in which the hot-rolled-and-annealed plate was fed at 45° into the rolls to change both the initial texture and the deformation mode. The skew-cold-rolled sheets and those rolled by conventional and cross rolling were then annealed at different temperatures (650 to 1050 °C) for different times (0.5 to 30 min). The recrystallization behavior was characterized using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) techniques. It was found that the cold rolling deformation mode and the initial texture have a significant effect on the recrystallization behavior. The recrystallization rates of the skew- and cross- rolled sheets are higher than that of conventionally rolled steel if the annealing temperature is low (650 °C) or the annealing time is short (0.5 min). When the annealing temperature is relatively high (850 °C) and the annealing time is relatively long (2 min), the difference in recrystallization rate is small. In all the cases, skew rolling promotes the formation of the desired &lt;001&gt;//ND (normal direction) texture, and the unfavorable &lt;111&gt;//ND texture is essentially eliminated.</div></div>

Abstract:
Abstract The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Committee has recently developed a new Section XI (Nuclear Components Inspection) Division 2 Code named “Reliability and Integrity Management (RIM).” RIM incorporates a new concept known as “System-Based Code (SBC)” originally due to Asada and his colleagues (2001–2004), where an integrated approach from design to service inspection is introduced using three new types of statistical quantities: (1) “system reliability index,” or “system co-reliability target” for any system consisting of structures and components, (2) “structural co-reliability,” for any structure, and (3) “component co-reliability” for any component, where co-reliability is defined as “1 – reliability” and is equal to failure probability. In a recent paper published in the International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping (Vol. 173 (2019), pp. 79–93). Fong, Heckert, Filliben, and Freiman developed a new theory of fatigue and creep rupture life modeling for metal alloys at room and elevated temperatures such that the co-reliability of a smooth component can be estimated from fatigue and creep rupture test data with simple loading histories. In this paper, we extend the theory to include a methodology to estimate the failure probability (or, co-reliability) of a stainless steel 316L(N) component undergoing a complex loading history such as a thermal fatigue cycle. To illustrate an application of this new modeling approach, we present a numerical example using (a) the experimental test data of 7 specimens of S.S. 316L(N) in creep at 565 C as published by Kilian Wasmer in his Ph.D. thesis (Imperial College London, 2003), (b) the experimental test data of 10 specimens of S.S. 316L(N) in creep at 650 C also by Wasmer (Ph.D. thesis, 2003), and (c) a thermal fatigue loading history of 1 hour of creep at 650 C at an operating creep stress of 73 MPa, and 300 hours of creep at 565 C at the same creep stress to simulate a hypothetical powerplant thermal fatigue operation. The significance and limitations of this new damage-state-based approach to modeling creep and to estimate the component failure probability (or, co-reliability) of steel components in creep at elevated temperatures with complex histories are discussed.

Abstract:
The Maine Energy Recovery Company is a refuse derived fuel (RDF) waste to energy facility that began commercial operation in 1987. The facility consists of an RDF production operation, two B&W boilers which produce 210,000 lb/hr of steam at 650 psig/750F with a design Furnace Exit Gas Temperature of 1700 F, and a 22 MW steam turbine generator. Since startup, the facility has suffered fireside erosion/corrosion of the waterwalls, superheater, and generator bank hot side sections. Through the years, Maine Energy has made various operational and design changes in order to improve combustion and overall boiler availability. While combustion has improved as evidenced by improved emissions, reduced supplemental fuel usage, and lower ash production, superheater availability has suffered. At the same time reliability of the waterwall and generating bank components have improved. This paper will present a history of Maine Energy’s efforts to improve its superheater availability including a summary of the tube wastage rates for various superheater alloys, as well as Maine Energy’s plans for its superheaters.

Abstract:
The acceptance of aspirin therapy for prevention of cerebral ischemia is based onpositive results of several large clinicaltrials, and the usual dose is 1000-1500 mg/day. Several recent reports emphasize the adverse effects of aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory agents on renal function. We examined wether two extreme doses of aspirin (60 mg vs 1200 mg/day) could alter renal function in patients recently admitted to hospital with cerebral ischemia. We studied 33 patients with cerebralischemia and no history of ingestion of aspirin nor other drugs two weeks prior to admission. During the first 5 days all patients received a 50 mEq sodium diet and no drugs, while during the second 5 days (trial) the patients were randomly assigned (double blind) to placebo, aspirin 20 mg or aspirin 400 mg, 3 times daily, with meals.Overall, body weight increased by 650 gin patients taking 1400 mg/day of aspirin (p≺0,01), but not in patients taking 60 mg/day. Also increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure did not reach significant differences. While waiting morereports, aspirin at doses near 1000 mg should be administered cautiously in sodium restricted patients with cerebral ischemia.Acute water retention may be specially troublesome.

Abstract:
Low alloy steels are often utilized in components experiencing decades of usage under aggressive operating conditions. Even though there has been remarkable advancement in the development of modern alloys, however, these materials continue to be applied in boilers, heat exchanger tubes, and throttle valve bodies in both turbomachinery and pressure-vessel/piping applications. These steels display excellent resistance to deformation and damage under creep and/or fatigue at moderate temperatures. For example, the material 2.25Cr-1Mo has exceptional balance of ductility, corrosion resistance, and creep strength under temperatures up to 650□C. Both creep and non-isothermal fatigue conditions have been the limiting factor for most 2.25Cr-1Mo components; therefore, a life prediction approach is constructed with the capability of approximating the number of cycles to failure for conditions where the material is experiencing creep and fatigue with thermal cycling. Parameters for the approach are built on regression fits in comparison with a comprehensive experimental database. This database includes low cycle fatigue (LCF), creep fatigue (CF), and thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) experiments. The cumulative damage approach was utilized for the life prediction model where dominant damage maps can be used to determine primary microstructural mechanism associated with failure. Life calculations are facilitated by the usage of a non-interacting creep-plasticity constitutive model capable of representing not only the temperature- and rate-dependence, but also the history-dependence of the material.

Abstract:
Despite the significant progress in the development of modern alloys, low alloy steels continue to be the materials of choice for large structural components at elevated temperature for extended periods of time. The resistance of these alloys to deformation and damage under creep and/or fatigue at elevated temperature make them suitable for components expected to endure decades of service. The material 2.25Cr-1Mo is commonly applied in boilers, heat exchanger tubes, and throttle valve bodies in both turbomachinery and pressure-vessel/piping applications alike. It has an excellent balance of ductility, corrosion resistance, and creep strength under moderate temperatures (i.e., up to 650°C). In the present work, a life prediction approach is developed for situations where the material is subjected conditions where creep and fatigue are prevalent. Parameters for the approach are based on regression fits in comparison with a broad collection experimental data. The data are comprised of low cycle fatigue (LCF) and creep fatigue (CF) experiments. The form of the life prediction model follows the cumulative damage approach where dominant damage maps can be used to identify primary microstructural mechanism associated with failure. Life calculations are facilitated by the usage of a non-interacting creep-plasticity constitutive model capable of representing not only the temperature- and rate-dependence, but also the history-dependence of the material. For the inelastic response, both the Garofalo and Chaboche models for creep and plasticity are employed, respectively.

Full text
Abstract:
As described in API RP 571, temper embrittlement is the reduction in toughness due to a metallurgical change that can occur in some low alloy steels as a result of long term exposure in the temperature range of about 650°F to 1070°F (343°C to 577°C). The loss of toughness is not evident at operating temperatures; however, equipment that is temper embrittled may be susceptible to brittle fracture during start-up and shutdown. 2.25 Chromium 1 Molybdenum steel used in the petrochemical industry is known to be susceptible to temper embrittlement. Most guidance to prevent temper embrittlement is oriented to heavy wall hydroprocessing reactors. In this work, a case history is presented where Fluidized Catalytic Cracking (FCC) components less than one inch in thickness exposed to temperatures in the 900°F to 1000°F (482°C to 538°C) range experienced temper embrittlement. Metallurgical analysis that included chemical analysis, microstructure observation, and charpy impact testing at different temperatures before and after heat treatment helped to identify the embrittlement cause. Several considerations to mitigate the risk in the short term including inspection, definition of minimum metal temperature to prevent brittle fracture, fitness for service, and modification of operational procedures, as well as long term considerations, including pipe component replacement, are described. Additional work regarding the selection of filler metals, welding procedure qualification tests that include step cooling tests, and learning that included bead sequence and heat input controls are also described. Applicable API RP 934-A [Ref. 6] recommendations were incorporated into the project specification for this work, such as the consideration of chemical restrictions for this alloy, not only for heavy wall applications but also for thinner wall applications working in the temper embrittlement range.

Abstract:
Preliminary surficial geology, based on airphoto interpretation of the Cape MacDonnel map area, records three glacial and landform terrains. First, ridged, hummocky tills dominate Big Spruce and Scented Grass hills between 300 and 650 m elevation. Second, undifferentiated till covers the lower flanks of Scented Grass and Big Spruce hills, also extending northeastward of the latter, where streamlined till occurs. Third, glaciolacustrine sediments are confined to some lowlands below 200 to 250 m, where they discontinuously cover various till units along the shores of Great Bear Lake. Variable ice flow and local stagnation characterizes glacial history. In northern regions, ice flowed southwestward and then veered northwestward, with evidence of local ice streaming. In east-central regions, flow was generally westward. In the southwest, flow was northwestward. Retreating and stagnating remnant ice deposited ridged and hummocky moraine, which may also coincide with cold-based ice. Glacial Lake McConnell inundated lowlands to at least 250 m a.s.l. in the east, and to 210 m in the west.
