Abstract:
The historiographical writings of Arrian, Appian, Herodian, and Cassius Dio pose interesting challenges to how we characterize Second Sophistic literature. With its ostensible goal of telling the truth about the past, imperial Greek historiography seems incompatible with the large bulk of imperial Greek writing that is more obviously inspired by declamation and whose main goal is the virtuosic display of erudition, or paideia. Furthermore, inasmuch as this historiography focuses primarily on Roman history, it hardly fulfills the stereotype of Second Sophistic literature as thematically Hellenocentric, even if it is similarly characterized by linguistic Atticism. This chapter therefore argues for an expanded definition of the Second Sophistic that can meaningfully accommodate the peculiarly hybrid nature of historiography on the levels of both genre and cultural politics—as “earnest” history somewhat dominated by rhetoric, and as work better described as “Greco-Roman” than as essentially “Greek.”

Abstract:
Newman continues to influence Christian historiography in theological discourse, but his legacy is confusing because his writings promote three conflicting metanarratives of the Christian past. In order to appreciate his influence as an ‘authoritative voice’ in appropriating the Christian past, it is crucial to understand what these metanarratives are, how Newman used them in his role as a controversialist as an Anglican and later as a Roman Catholic, and the diverse ways in which Newman’s example is invoked in twenty-first-century theological discourse to promote incompatible appeals to Christianity’s historical legacy.

Abstract:
During the Reformation, arguments over the near and distant past are crucial for making people increasingly aware of the plurality of competing, even contradictory, accounts of the past. This article examines the way in which historical accounts of Richard III’s reign point to the emergence of a historiographical consciousness, an awareness that written history is partial in both senses of the word. It considers the extent of John Foxe’s influence on English history writing and how he made revisionist history mainstream. It analyses chronicle history plays, especiallyThe True Tragedie of Richard III, as evidence that historiographical consciousness was widespread in the period. It also treats the connection between dissimulation and conspiracy in Thomas More’sHistoryand cites George Buck’sThe History of King Richard III(1619) as a remarkable example of revisionism that deploys historical learning against received opinion.

Abstract:
‘Historiography’ looks at how the Greeks and Romans conceived and wrote about their past. The historian's work tells us as much about their own period as it does about any other. The influence of other genres on the writing of history, and the extent to which ancient writers engaged in what we would recognize as historical research, rather than simply recasting earlier writers' versions of the past is considered. How individual historians defended their claim to truth and how the process of historical discovery could aim to explain many different things is shown. Despite their shortcomings by modern standards of historical accuracy or impartiality, the great achievement of ancient historians is illustrated.
