Abstract:
The warehousing industry is faced with increasing customer demands and growing global competition. A major factor in the efficient operation of warehouses is the strategic storage location assignment of arriving goods, termed the dynamic storage location assignment problem (DSLAP). This paper presents a real-world use case of the DSLAP, in which deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is used to derive a suitable storage location assignment strategy to decrease transportation costs within the warehouse. The DRL agent is trained on historic data of storage and retrieval operations gathered over one year of operation. The evaluation of the agent on new data of two months shows a 6.3% decrease in incurring costs compared to the currently utilized storage location assignment strategy which is based on manual ABC-classifications. Hence, DRL proves to be a competitive solution alternative for the DSLAP and related problems in the warehousing industry.

Abstract:
This new work explores 260 celebrated locations of historical import in the United States. A unique publication, the only similar undertaking in the recent past is Thomas W. Paradis’s The Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Landmarks (Lorenz 2011). This older Lorenz edition is not widely held in American academic or public libraries, focuses more on the visual, and also highlights seemingly less-compelling sites such as state capitol buildings, marketplaces, and warehouses. Newton-Matza’s book, on the other hand, hones in on places more widely acknowledged as historically significant, such as the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Grand Canyon. Other locations included here may be closely associated with major battles or well-known figures of the American past—US presidents, writers, and inventors, for example. The latter type of entry tends to be largely biographical (e.g., the Booker T. Washington National Monument in Virginia) while others focus chiefly on whatever significant event took place there, such as Woodstock or Ground Zero.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper was to document the development of a major regional department store from the firm’s start to the completion of a single block structure including the warehouses required to support its operations. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a survey of historic materials including the recently available archival materials in the Oregon Historical Society Research Library. Findings The study reveals the interaction of vision, planning and risk taking in a family enterprise over two generations. It illustrates the search for information as to what was required and the importance of architectural elements in the construction and operation of their store. Research limitations/implications The archival materials are extensive; however, over the years, much of the operating data were destroyed or lost. Although family members remain in Oregon, they are reluctant to discuss the store’s history, even though the matters that affected them took place many years after the study’s period. Originality/value Much of the information collected in the study had never been used in previous work.

Abstract:
As I will examine in this study of waterfront redevelopment at Jack London Square, the business plans, architectural/landscaping designs, and historic memorabilia drummed up by Oakland civic, business and port leaders, from 1951 through to the early twenty-first century, repeatedly changed their focus as a result of cross-bay rivalry. The two cities had long competed for businesses and residents, using city planning to improve their transportation infrastructure and, later, their tourist draw. From 1951 through the 1960s, themed restaurants in Jack London Square multiplied, and the Port of Oakland cobbled together seafaring artifacts and Jack London memorabilia. Starting in the 1970s, private businessmen and the Port took on grander retailing approaches that progressed from a woodsy maritime village to a shopping mall to an artisanal foods market. Each time, Jack London Square was made over in light of events across the bay: the 1960s conversion of brick warehouses and factories into the retailing/restaurant venues of Ghirardelli Square and the Cannery; the late 1970s construction of a vast shopping and entertainment complex on Pier 39; and the early 2000s redevelopment of the Ferry Building, closer to downtown San Francisco, into a locavore food emporium. Yet each time, Oakland’s attempts to compete with San Francisco fell short.

McNally, James, and Kriss ‘Krissy Kriss’ Johnson. "‘Doing that music which moves me’: A conversation with Bristol hip hop pioneer, Krissy Kriss." Global Hip Hop Studies 2, no. 1 (June 1, 2021): 115–29. http://dx.doi.org/10.1386/ghhs_00036_7.

Full text
Abstract:
From the early-1980s, the arrival of hip hop in the UK city of Bristol created a wave of new possibilities for multiracial Bristolians. In the medium-term, this would help yield the music popularly termed ‘the Bristol Sound’, exemplified by post-hip hop performers like Tricky and Massive Attack – all of whom were part of the city’s early hip hop scene. More immediately, however, Bristol would become home to a vital hip hop party culture, centred on makeshift – and frequently illegal – parties thrown in warehouses, shebeens and small independent clubs in and around the city’s storied Black district, St. Paul’s. In this wide-ranging oral history conversation, which broadens the debate on Bristol hip hop and its diasporic sound-making, pioneering Bristol MC, Kriss ‘Krissy Kriss’ Johnson, discusses his memories and experiences of hip hop in the city. He provides fresh insights on diasporic Black identities in semi-rural contexts; the historic textures of teenage Black popular culture in Bristol in the 1970s–80s; the political realities of early-Thatcherism; the resurgence of British street racism in the 1970s; the psychogeography of Bristol neighbourhoods and historic change in St. Paul’s; the historically grounded appeals of hip hop culture as a site of affirmative teenage Black identity and possibility; the lived experience of Bristol’s DIY hip hop party culture. In doing this, Johnson offers a historically important Black perspective on a scene that has often been glossed by journalists and academics alike in terms of its utopian polyculturalism. By prioritizing his response as a young Black person in the historical particularities of his lived context, the conversation moves beyond the priorities of such accounts to provide a nuanced appreciation of Bristol’s hip hop movement in the city’s complex race and class geography. The account, moreover, recentres hip hop in the history of this party scene, which journalists have typically viewed from the prism of an overdetermined hybridity seen as peculiar to the city.

Abstract:
For many years in Poland, anthropogenic objects constructed underground have been very popular with tourists. In the past they fulfilled various functions (historic mines, underground merchant warehouses, military objects, special objects, caverns and grottoes). Many of them were secured and rebuilt in such a way that a new form was created. They make interesting tourist offers and still more objects can be made available to tourists. An example of strongly modified underground anthropogenic objects of very complex geometry and extremely interesting architectural form is the Underground Tourist Route (Polish: Podziemna Trasa Turystyczna – PTT) in Sandomierz. Owing to much effort and financial means, in 1960s many interesting cellars and merchant warehouses were saved from destruction – and – with the application of mining techniques, they were joint into attractive spatial forms. So far, few publications give the full characteristic and parametric data of this object. Today’s possibilities of available measurement and information technologies allow comprehensive inventory of complicated engineering constructions, as well as the 3D visualization, regarding even tiniest elements of small architecture (doors, lattice, lamps, etc.). The article presents the results of the visualization and parameterization based on the data from integrated surveying (levelling, transects, total stations, laser scanning and other direct measurements). ELEKTRONICZNA WIZUALIZACJA PODZIEMNYCH TRAS TURYSTYCZNYCH NA PRZYKŁADZIE TRASY W SANDOMIERZU W Polsce dużą popularnością turystyczną od lat cieszą się obiekty antropogeniczne wzniesione pod powierzchnią ziemi, pełniące różnorodne funkcje użytkowe w przeszłości (zabytkowe kopalnie, podziemne składy kupieckie, obiekty militarne, obiekty specjalne, jaskinie i groty). Wiele z nich zostało w stopniu istotnym zabezpieczone i przebudowane w taki sposób, by nadać im nową formę. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki wizualizacji i parametryzacji na podstawie danych zintegrowanych pomiarów geodezyjnych (niwelacji, poligonizacji, tachimetrii elektronicznej, skaningu laserowego i innych pomiarów bezpośrednich).

Abstract:
In the late nineteenth century, the construction of warehouse districts became an important part of the building process in the North American city. These warehouse districts were the centres of activity for the wholesalers who were the key agents for the expansion of mercantile capitalism. The warehouses themselves were often structures of unusual architectural distinction. With the railroad station, the warehouse was ordinarily the true civic monument of the North American city. This article studies the process by which the wholesale district was formed.

Abstract In this presentation, we discuss how a data warehouse can support situational awareness and data forensic needs for investigation of event streams violating rules. The data warehouse for event streams can contain summary tables showing rule violation on different aggregation level. We will introduce the classification of rules and the concept of a general aggregation graph for defining various classes of rules violation and their relationships. The data warehouse system containing various rule violation aggregations will allow the data forensics experts to have the ability to “drill-down” into event data across different data warehouse dimensions. The event stream real-time processing and other software modules can also use the summarizations to discover if current events bursts satisfy rules by comparing them with historic event bursts.

Abstract:
It can be hard to guess how much data will need to be put into the data warehouse when the whole history of the transaction system is moved there. This is especially true when the transfer process could take weeks or even months. The ETL system's parts must be broken down into its three independent stages, nevertheless, when estimating a big starting load. Data extraction from source systems, Creating the dimensional model from data, Loading the data warehouse and timing estimates for the extraction process. Surprisingly, data extraction from the source system may take up the majority of the ETL procedure. Online transaction processing (OLTP) systems are simply not built to return those massive data sets from the data warehouse's historic load, which extracts a tremendous quantity of data in a single query. However, the daily incremental loads and the breath-of-life historic database loads are very different. In any case, fact-table filling requires data to be pulled in a different way than what transaction systems are able to do. ETL extraction procedures frequently call for time-consuming techniques like views, cursors, stored procedures, and correlated subqueries. It is essential to anticipate how long an extract will take to begin before it does. Calculating the extract time estimate is challenging. Due to the hardware mismatch between the test and production servers, estimates based on the execution of the ETL operations in the test environment may be greatly distorted. Sometimes working on certain projects where an extract task would run continuously and until it eventually failed, at which point it would be restarted and run once more until it failed. Without producing anything, days or even weeks passed. One must divide the extract process into two simpler steps in order to overcome the challenges of working with large amounts of data. Response time for queries. the interval between when the query is conducted and when the data starts to be returned. It is pertinent that effort arrival for ETL Operations for Data Marts and DWH projects in terms of Function Points which is a scientific way is essential. In the last paper, I have talked about general System Characteristics to arrive at Value Adjustment Factor. In this paper, I came up with results. I compared my findings with the conventional FPA on industrial projects in order to evaluate the Function Point Analysis’s suitability for Data Mart projects. I outline the strategy, implementation, and outcomes analysis of this validation in this section.

Abstract:
In this article the dynamics of normative-legal acts, aimed at the fight against drug addiction, which were adopted in the Soviet Union during the period from 1960 to 1991 b. It is shown that the Decree of the Presidential Verkhovna Rada of the Soviet Socialist Republic of 1974 significantly strengthened the criminal indifference for such evils, in the wake of the USSR Committee of 1960. The role of such crimes was played by the Resolution of the Plenum of the Supreme Court of the USSR. Looking at the adoption of these legal and regulatory acts in the fight against drug addiction, the doctrines of the Radyanskie sciences have been changed. The processes of drug addiction in the Soviet Socialist Republic have been growing on a zealous scale, the evil caused by drug addiction has increased, and the happy fakhieves and abuses have become clear from this point of view. In ostensibly arguments the following reasons hung: antisocial life; chase for receipt vid sale of drug products; batannyami pidnyati nasty and unknuti physical pain. The Statute of the URSR Committee of 1960 was not in the present world that the fight against anesthesia was effective for the cause of an insignificant number of children for what the criminality of vidpovidalnist was. Look at the sanctions caused by the illegal drug-related speeches of the URSR CC of 1960, shows the fact that there have been prolonged penalties for such crimes, the therminomic activity of voli right robots has lines of 1 to 3 rows and more in the types of smuggling of drug trafficking of sanctions is increased by lines of 3 to 10 rows. In the fight against illegal narcotics, the role of the SSR played a significant role in the work of doctors and the number of states, associated with the problems, which were published on the pages of newspapers and magazines. Thus, the doctors in their offices, brought negative injections into the state of health, psychic, behavioral and drug use. The newest fight against drug addiction took place after the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR was adopted in the 25th quarter of 1974, which significantly broadened the scope of punitive measures, added new warehouses, unify the norms of criminal legislation and provoked strict punishment for the times of the 1960 URDF Communist Party Committee, up to that date, a severe thermic punishment was carried out for such crimes up to 15 years, according to p. 1 and p.1. 2 given to the Decree, up to 10 years, there were three points and the establishment of such worlds as the Confiscation of the Main. In this historic period, there was a tendency to fight against illegal sowing of narcove cultures, which was found at the Station for the sake of the Ministers of the Soviet Socialist Republic, as well as at the Visconauts' Committees of the Masses, they were glad to report about the control and prevention of sowing of such cultures. It is shown that the Ministry of Health of the USSR has adopted legal and regulatory assets of the world in terms of the strength of the protection of drugs, control over their types, trade and prescription. Key words: Criminal code, Decree, drugs, misdemeanours, Supreme Court of the USSR, criminality.

Abstract:
This work concerns Vicenza, a city located not far from Venice in the north-east corner of Italy, and it specifically refers to an area situated on the outskirts of the city’s urban fabric between the perimeter of its ancient walls and the banks of the Bacchiglione river, in the shadow of the abandoned monastery of St. Biagio. The idea of restoring that physically and socially degraded area of the city of Vicenza has long been the object of discussion on the part of local authorities. Once intimately linked to the city’s historic center, the area gradually lost its functional and social identity becoming first a parking lot and then equipped as a city warehouse. The intent to regenerate the area and the observation that the relationship between the city and its river is constantly refused, or delayed, lead to recognize in the long edge of the area a unique meeting opportunity which allows to repair the water-city association, recuperating rituals and connections from the past. The municipality is presently planning on pursuing a qualitative restoration of the area which will be used for social and cultural enrichment. The final part of the current work outlines some proposals that were developed during the Architectural and Urban Composition 2 course recently offered by the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering of the University of Padua (Italy).

AbstractTo achieve Germany's 2045 goal of climate‐neutral building stock, the integration of renewable energies in retrofitting is necessary. The project ‘CO2‐neutrales Welterbe Speicherstadt Hamburg’ situated in the historic warehouse district, focuses on the sustainable heat supply in listed buildings. The project consists of two main approaches: a practical approach combining historically sensitive components for heat supply to create a comprehensive energy retrofitting concept with renewable energies in the listed area, and a methodological approach using Building Information Management (BIM) to integrate various simulation models and centralize outcomes efficiently. This enables a holistic and energy‐efficient retrofit, addressing flow‐specific, thermal, and ecological aspects, thereby marking a significant step toward achieving a CO2 neutral listed building stock.

Abstract:
In Italy, it has always been difficult to collect reliable data on real estate given the opacity of the information available. Keeping into consideration the actual availability of data and information, the possibility to have a structure for permanently monitoring and analysing the real estate market is fundamental. Focusing on developing and disseminating knowledge related to practices in this context, in this paper the Turin’s (Northern Italy) experience is presented, through the Real Estate Market Observatory (TREMO): This structure is based on a data-warehouse, implemented over time, with databases that lead to historic price observations of the residential market. The data warehouse is the basis for investigating methodologies and analyses, assuming the spatial requisites of the data and its georeferencing as the main discriminant in choosing among descriptive statistics, multi-varied or spatial analysis methods. In twenty years, several studies have been developed, allowing us not only to explore the applicability of models and operative modalities, but also to obtain results with a high potential impact under a social viewpoint. In this paper, the methodologies developed for implementing the monitoring structure are presented, specifically the “quality process” and computerized analysis procedures, followed by some representative research experiences with reference to aims, models and results.

Abstract:
This work aims to identify fundamentally new features in the spatial organization of e-grocery and ready-made food trade in a Russian city, distinct from those typical of traditional food retail enterprises. Focusing on St Petersburg, the article describes the emergence of a completely different system of requirements imposed by new forms of online food retail in the space of a large Russian city, compared with traditional industries and retail organization methods. The spatial and temporal parameters of the new shopping model are considered, and a comparative analysis of its spatial competition with already established models is presented. The spatial organization of new online food retail is demonstrated in the context of the placement system of new types of offline objects, the emergence of new flows, their impact on urban development and the effect on the outdoor and transit advertising markets, as well as on the labor market. Based on this analysis, it is concluded that new-type physical objects such as distribution warehouses, warehouse stores (fulfilment centres) and dot-com objects are placed according to entirely different principles. If the location of a service point is no longer a competitive advantage as seen by the buyer, faster delivery, hidden from the consumer, emerges as a critical factor in new competition. The paper also analyses the significance of spatial organization principles associated with this factor.

Abstract:
This article speaks to a world order where forced labour is in plain sight. The starting point for the crime and recruitment of victims of human trafficking is often on the street. Homeless persons and individuals who have recently left correctional institutions are approached and swiftly transported to countries of destination. There, again in plain sight, they are taken to legal and regulated recruitment agencies and are found jobs. In many instances, they are placed in factories, recycling plants, and warehouses. Although these jobs are legitimate, what happens behind the scenes is not: individuals working have no access to their wages, suffer psychological and physical abuse, threats, coercive control, and their documents are taken from them. These clear components of forced labour are perfectly illustrated in the plight of vulnerable polish men recruited and transported to the UK who were discovered in UK’s largest police investigation into forced labour: Operation Fort. This exposé investigates and explores three key points where intervention is needed: two related to the recruitment of certain subgroups – the targeting of homeless individuals and those with a relationship with the criminal justice system, and a third, where forced labour is facilitated through the use of legitimate recruitment agencies.

Abstract:
Purpose – Gyeongsangbuk-do is a region prone to frequent natural disasters, and there are high expectations for the establishment of an Integrated National Management System of Disaster Resources. For this purpose, it is necessary to expand disaster prevention stockpiles in the province. However, currently, the logistics perspective has not adequately been considered, leading to network inefficiency. Therefore, this study proposes an optimal location-allocation plan for disaster stockpile warehouses in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Design/Methodology/Approach – This research applied a discrete-linear facility location problem based on maximal covering location algorithm. The optimal location is determined by prioritizing nearby areas and setting the service distance limit lower than the current maximum service distance. Findings – As a result, Gyeongju-si was identified as a more suitable facility location instead of Pohangsi, one of the current disaster stockpile center locations. Furthermore, the proposed optimal locationallocation plan is more efficient than the current network and reduces regional deviations due to the objective function of the applied algorithm. Research Implications – Based on the Integrated National Management System of Disaster Resources plan, this study holds potential for practical use by using the current operating warehouse locations in Gyeongsangbuk-do as parameters. Additionally, since logistics is often overlooked in disaster management, the optimal location and distribution plan proposed in this study can serve as an indicator of logistics efficiency.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the late 19th and early 20th century, tobacco exports from the Ottoman Empire rapidly increased. Thousands of workers began to earn their livelihoods in warehouses, sorting and baling tobacco leaves according to their qualities. Ottoman towns where tobacco warehouses were concentrated soon became the sites of frequent labor protests. This article analyzes strikes that broke out in two such towns, İskeçe (Xanthi) and Kavala, in 1904 and 1905. It underlines the active role of the Ottoman government in the settlement of these strikes. It also shows that mobilized tobacco workers devised effective protest tactics and often secured a say in key decisions, such as when and under what conditions the warehouses operated. However, in both towns, labor activism was characterized by fragmentation as well as unity. The workers who took to the streets did not equally share the burdens and benefits of their collective actions. That inequality, the article argues, was rooted in gendered power relations, intercommunal rivalries, and other social tensions among the workers.

Abstract:
212 Background: The ability to link cancer registry data to clinical and administrative data sets for quality improvement has long been desired. We sought to integrate registry data into a central data warehouse in an effort to make available for the first time consistent and reliable diagnosis and staging data to a broad hospital user group. Methods: After a short period of data analysis, the tables for Cancer Registry data (Oracle) were modeled. The source data (SQL Server) was conformed and integrated using an ETL tool (Informatica). All ETL QA work was performed with SQL queries. Cancer registry data was integrated into reporting architecture (Microstrategy) to facilitate design of standardized and ad hoc reports. Results: 140 distinct fields on demographics, staging (clinical, pathological, collaborative), site specific categories, diagnosis, and treatment were integrated into the Dana-Farber Analytics Reporting Tool (DART) for historic Cancer Registry data beginning with January 2010 newly diagnosed cancers. All Cancer Registry data and patient files (new and old) are updated in DART on a monthly basis. Conclusions: Individuals across the hospital now have the ability to link clinical and administrative data from our EMR, institutional QI data from varied systems, and pharmacy data to Cancer Registry data in the DART tool. One example of the integration of these multiple data sets is the linkage of staging data from the Cancer Registry data set and time to referral data from the administrative data set by patient MRN. As DFCI aims to cohort its patients based on their primary diagnosis for quality improvement and other internal reporting needs, the ability to analyze patients in this way becomes critical. This project sets an example for other centers as they integrate Cancer Registry data into user friendly business intelligence systems to help meet federal reporting mandates and aid internal improvement work. Abstract:
In the late nineteenth century the city of Kavala, a town by the sea in northern Greece, was developed to one of the most important tobacco processing centers in the Balkan area. Powerful tobacco merchants mainly from the Hapsburg and Ottoman empires built a considerable number of tobacco warehouses thus redefining the center of the city, its character, as well as its borders. I argue that the architecture of those warehouses deeply configured the identities of tobacco workers and provided the means to tobacco merchants to publicly present themselves and their achievements. At the same time those early industrial buildings subverted the boundaries between the city and the factory, shedding light on the work culture and every day lives of Greece’s tobacco workers.

Abstract:
Power transformers’ failures carry great costs to electric companies. To diminish this problem in four working 40 MVA transformers, the authors have implemented the measurement system of a failure prediction tool, which is the basis of a predictive maintenance infrastructure. The prediction models obtain their inputs from sensors, whose values must be conditioned, sampled and filtered before feeding the forecasting algorithms. Applying Data Warehouse tech- niques, the models have been provided with an abstraction of sensors the authors have called Virtual Cards. By means of these virtual devices, models have access to clean data, both fresh and historic, from the set of sensors they need. Besides, several characteristics of the data flow coming from the Virtual Cards, such as the sample rate or the set of sensors itself, can be dynamically reconfigured. A replication scheme was implemented to allow the distribution of demanding processing tasks and the remote management of the prediction applications.

Abstract:
The focus of this study was to investigate the feasibility of transforming historically significant buildings with high energy requirements into high-performance constructions. The researcher suggested adaptive reuse for the case study, recommending that the building be converted from a warehouse into a café and art studio, which would be in line with the surrounding art district in Tucson, Arizona. As a result of the change in design, everything from the floor plans to the building facades and the mechanical systems were modified. During the visit to the location, the researcher was able to identify the primary factors that led to the low energy efficiency. The study was conducted using the real-life energy simulation that the DOE-2 simulation engine provides. During the process of redesigning the building, the researcher utilized both passive and active design strategies to evaluate how these techniques impacted the amount of energy consumed by the structure. The total amount of energy that was saved from all of the implemented solutions was compared to the total amount of energy that was consumed by the base case (the existing condition). The findings indicated that the chosen case study had a significant potential for reducing energy consumption, with savings amounting to more than 50 percent of the total energy usages.

Abstract:
Four years ago Peter Draper, as your recently retired president, described his lecture as valedictory and therefore self-indulgent in its choice of topic. What a useful precedent. I hope I am not over self-indulgent to the extent of being too autobiographical, but the subject does relate to my personal experience of the practice of architectural history in the conservation of historic buildings. The history of building conservation is now developing its own quite substantial literature to which this is a small contribution. To some extent this lecture is as much about bureaucracy as about architecture, for much of my life has been spent as an official in the public service. But, so that the lecture is properly historical, most of what I will talk about happened before I was involved. One major difference between the British and American Societies of Architectural Historians is that the American Society has always involved itself in building preservation issues, whereas the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain does not. This recognizes the different circumstances in each country. In Great Britain we have many amenity societies directed to conservation matters; most of us will belong to one or more of them and they are centres of quite extraordinary expertise. But in view of what I will say later, it is notable that in an account of a meeting in March 1941 in Washington, reported in the first volume of the American Society’s journal, Henry-Russell Hitchcock commented on the merits of the Historic American Buildings Survey, but added that selections by local groups often lacked historical perspective and ignored anything later than the Greek Revival; that there was excessive preservation of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century houses in New England without regard to architectural merit; and that primary monuments of modern architectural history were wantonly destroyed. As concerns the latter, he cited, among others, Richardson’s Marshall Field Warehouse, and a threat to Wright’s Robie House. The representative of the National Parks Service said that 1870 was about the date limit for a building to be regarded as of interest, though the Vanderbilt House of 1895 had recently been acquired, and that attention was also being paid to groups of buildings.

Abstract:
The Capitol Mall is a very complex urban area adjacent to downtown Phoenix, where Governmental buildings exist side by side with a historic residential neighborhood, warehouse buildings, an under-construction human services campus, vacant lots, and many homeless people on the streets. This area has been 'forgotten' in recent efforts to revitalize downtown Phoenix. The Capitol Mall project involved two studios - Architecture and Planning - conducted simultaneously during spring 2005. The planning studio was intended to develop a revitalization plan and the architecture studio was charged with developing specific programs and projects of urban design and architecture. The purpose of this paper is threefold: 1) to introduce our studios as examples of community embeddedness, 2) to discuss our pedagogical approaches and the project's outcomes, and 3) to present a set of lessons learned that can be valuable to others teaching similar joint studio arrangements. In brief the five lessons are: a) joint studios can have different approaches to reality, b) interdisciplinary studios can benefit from different methodologies and outcomes, c) planning and architecture studios use classroom resources differently, d) joint studios display creativity in different ways, 5) interdisciplinary studios can lead to joint discovery and re-enforcement of learning experiences.

Abstract:
Abstract In early modern Venice, wine and money were intrinsically linked through the pawnbroking service that innkeepers and bastioneri, the managers of wine warehouses (bastioni), offered their customers. The loans that they supplied were generally small, officially interest-free, and frequent. Moreover, at least one-third of each was paid in wine, at that time considered a staple. Hence, innkeepers and bastioneri were central figures in Venice’s urban context, especially for the poor. Those individuals, usually considered “voiceless” in history were, in fact, the main actors in what might be termed a “handkerchief” economy, named for one of its most pawned items.
