This thesis describes a method which was formed to deal with the assignment of design study of “Lin An Tai Historical Home” adaptation. The site is located in Taipei (Taiwan) and was chosen to become a part of Flower Expo 2010/11 exposition area. The method is based on research on traditional Chinese garden principles considering Taiwanese characteristics. Whole work is divided into three parts. Part I introduces Chinese gardens from historical evolution through description of individual elements to general analysis of typical layouts. Consequently, common devices applied in design process of classical gardens are explained. Examples of private gardens remarked in the text complete the image of infinite variety of Chinese gardens which evolved during ages. Part II is focused on Taiwanese gardens. Historical perspective is followed by specification of differences in relation to Chinese gardens originals. Finally, two contemporary Taiwanese public gardens built in traditional style are presented. The Nan Yuan(South Garden) in Hsinchu County and Chih Shan Yuan adjacent to National Palace Museum in Taipei. Application of elements and approach of design are discussed in regard to traditional Chinese garden principles. Part III explains the design method and the design study of “Lin An Tai Historical Home” itself. The design method was developed to deal with the Flower expo assignment together with complex system of various conditions related to the site. Two types of requirements going one against the other were necessary to be fitted together. The first type was related to the exposition purposes. The site is expected to serve for thousands of visitors, thus implementation of open public spaces was inevitable. The second type was on the contrary connected to the Lin An Tai historical compound. Style of the whole plot was assumed to remind classical private house and garden. To solve these contradictory requirements, principles described in Part I were followed. To obtain the best results, the site was analysed together with its neighbourhood. Treatment of revealed elements which cannot be altered, like the concrete body of neighbour freeway or the sluice road on nearby river, became important factors for further design process. Traditional techniques like space dividing, planning of touring routes, positioning of viewing spots and vistas, etc., were applied in the site arrangement. System of walking galleries and pavilions made the site accessible and enjoyable in all weathers and system of lantern lighting even at night. Vegetation plan was prepared chiefly focused on local Taiwanese or domesticated species. Whole design can be characterized as an experimental work where traditional Chinese garden principles were followed while modern time requirements and local specifics were incorporated.
