Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study aims to understand the role that 19th century photography can play in the reconstruction of an era and in the conservation of cultural heritage in the 21st century. The photo collection of William Roe, a photographer from Graaff-Reinet, is used as an example. The origin and development of Graaff-Reinet is used as background information and major events such as the Great Trek, the arrival of the railway, the Anglo-Boer War, the First World War and the Great Flu are touched upon. Aspects such as education, churches, the library and the hospital in Graaff-Reinet complement the study. An overview of the development of photography covers several early photo-making processes. These include the daguerreotype process, Talbot's paper negative process, collotype and the popular carte de visite photographs. Photography specifically in South Africa is also conferred, with particular reference to the first photographers working in the country. Reference is made to the important influences major events like the discovery of diamonds and gold as well as the Anglo-Boer War had on photography. The discussion of William Roe as human being and his legacy as a photographer forms an integral part of the study. The Victorian period is discussed since this was the period in which Roe worked and lived. It had a formative influence on his workmanship. An overview of the Victorian period in England is followed by specific focus on South Africa during this time. The rush to the diamond fields, issues with language and the trends of the times are pointed out. Many of these trends are specifically indicated and discussed as they appear in Roe’s photos. The photos have been categorized to clarify analysis of the different cultural phenomena. The architecture and historical background of Graaff-Reinet’s churches and public buildings are discussed. Streetscapes and images of the town as a whole show the development and daily activities that took place. Photos of clothing represent a reconstruction of the fashions of the concurrent Victorian era and those of public events such as sporting events, celebrations, plays and a gathering during the Anglo-Boer War, display the social life of the community. The role of human memory in the writing of cultural history is compared with the “memory” role of photographs. At the same time the ability of photographs to reflect not only physical culture, but also abstract concepts, receives attention. The use of these abilities of photography in the preservation of culture is a challenge for conservationists of the 21th century.

Full textThis thesis examines the role of cultural heritage in adaptively reused historic industrial buildings in Portland, Oregon. While it has been argued that adaptive reuse contributes to the ecological and economic initiatives of sustainability, this research explores how adapting historic industrial buildings for modern reuse can also be socially and culturally sustainable for communities. Industrial buildings provide physical evidence of a rich cultural and industrial past and there are opportunities to share this heritage with a building's new users and/or the surrounding community. Case studies include selectively chosen National Register nominated buildings that meet specific criteria, share a common regulatory framework, and provide insightful information regarding the relationship between history and new use. Strengths and challenges of conveying industrial heritage in modern use as well as opportunities for developers of historic properties to highlight and improve upon this process are identified.

It analyses its architectonic values, establishes the economic, politic and sociologic conditions that promoted its creation. In addition, this thesis reveals how Gruen’s work was perceived at the time of its creation and compares the critiques’ welcome to the historiography of Modern Architecture. Ultimately, this thesis demonstrates that the architectonic qualities of Victor Gruen’s retail architecture should be included in Modern Architecture history monographs.

Full textIn the developed Western world, the need to preserve buildings, including industrial buildings, is well established, and the many charters that exist for guidance for preservation of the built environment point to the necessity of preservation. It can be posited that many of South Africa buildings with industrial architectural heritage are being lost either through neglect, obsolescence, demolition or vandalisation. At an international conference, David Worth, the sole South African representative for the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH), stated that South Africa‟s industrial heritage has been neglected by the public, by professionals and academics, and by commercial and political interests. Läuferts and Mavunganidze make the point that South Africa continues to lag behind other countries in the preservation of and declaration of its industrial heritage. The purpose of this research was to investigate if adaptive reuse is a successful strategy to preserve industrial architectural heritage in South Africa. A further aim was to investigate whether adaptive reuse can be considered sustainable or „green‟ (in terms of the UN‟s sustainable development goals)

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: George is considered the capital of the Southern Cape and is situated in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It has a very mild climate and the region receives above average rainfall. Centuries ago several Khoi tribes were present in this area and the first Europeans settled here around the middle of the 18th century. After the foundation of the town of George in 1811 more people moved to this region. Khoi, and later coloured people, lived at the Pacaltsdorp Mission station. Initially the town developed very slowly and it was only after 1920 that growth accelerated. With regard to architecture, the Cape Dutch Revival style started appearing since 1900, but it was only from 1920 onwards that many new buildings were erected in this style. Up untill then architecture reflected the successive styles current during the 19th century. However very few of these buildings survived in George. The Cape Dutch architectural style that was used until the late 19th century in the rural areas, was the first indigenous South African style that revived. This revival was initiated by sir Herbert Baker, and after 1910 it was applied increasingly by other architects. Several characteristics of the Cape Dutch style were incorporated in the Revival Style, but the eclectic approach of the style resulted in a variety of styles being represented. In other towns of the Southern Cape and Little Karroo the same trends appeared, putting the architecture of George in perspective. In South Africa the theories on conservation are not applied satisfactorily. In George specifically there are no attempts by local authorities to conserve the architectural heritage systematically and judiciously. Some local conservation bodies have attempted to create awareness, but had little success. As the Cape Dutch Revival style is the oldest style of which a number of buildings are still in existence, it is from a conservational point of view of the utmost importance that they are being cared for in a circumspect way.

Full textThe present work aims to elaborate a study about the cultural heritage and tourism of the city of Pelotas, in the south of Brazil with a focus on the importance of this heritage in order to boost cultural tourism. Pelotas city has developed economically with the establishment of “charqueadas” which were basically country houses that produced salted, dried meat through slave labour in the end of the eighteenth century. It lead to an accumulation of wealth in the city, which brought modern and technological development influenced directly by european culture. This development occured mainly during the second half of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, and made the city stood out in the country as na exemple of modern urbanization. This period consolidated a historical cultural landscape that can be seen in the artistic and architectural ensambles materialized in the city’s beautiful buildings and public spaces. These facts enabled the development o the city’s cultural turism. In a first moment, the present research intends to present a discussion about heritage, tourism and development. After that, it focuses on presentig how the cultural tourism Works in the city, identifying, in a systematic way, the city’s enrolled cultural heritage and its other elements or branches, like artistic and the intangible cultural heritage. This work also presents a contextualization of the city’s industrial, economic and modern apogee and its impacts on peoples’ lifestyle, facts that justify the need for such study. It is possible to see through this research that the city of Pelotas has a very rich cultural heritage which constitutes a set of nacional importance.

Historic heritage places and historical buildings are all a very important state heritage assets. According to the Article #22 of the Cultural heritage protection law, when the historic heritage places and historical buildings are being repaired or re-used, these places and building can be a subject to partial or full exemption from the Fire Code regulations. When a historic building cannot fulfill the requirements for the “Standards for installation of fire safety equipment based on use and occupancy” and the related laws and regulations, and the walls of the building cannot resist fire for a period longer than an hour, it becomes impossible to make an effective division of the districts in case of fire, and to keep the fire doors and windows constantly closed. In case of a fire hazard, not only the building and the heritage assets become endangered, but there also is a risk of losing an opportunity to pass on the cultural values to further generations.. To protect historic heritage places and historical buildings, it is necessary to improve the fire safety levels according to the “Fire safety measures implementation plan”. This research conducted to analyze of the construction of one of the historic buildings in Taiwan, - “Culture park of Nantou – Wu De Dian”. Fire safety related laws and regulations were reviewed, the adaptation of fire safety measures and fire safety environment was investigated: including the analysis of the reasons and the consequences of eventual fire hazards at the venue, the evaluation of the historic heritage place fire hazard possibilities, and the firefighting strategy was recommended. After conducting these activities, the results were evaluated and the marks were given according to the historic heritage places, historical buildings and settlements fire hazard evaluation methodology. This research found the fire hazard response plan to be with some minor insufficiencies, countermeasure plan and fire protection adjustment plans were provided to the venue, as well as the “Techniques and practical use of the new fire equipment at historic heritage places and historical buildings” explanation lesson was given. Sincerely hope that this “Fire safety measures implementation plan” can become a reference material for the future researches.

The aim of this study is to confirm various factors, mainly by applying literature review and collection together with the Fuzzy Delphi Method, FDM. Then the Analytical Hierarchy Process, AHP is successively put in use to firmly establish the weight and consistency of the factors, which accordingly assists with the development of a more objective and precise assessment scale of fire prevention management for the reuse of historic buildings and monuments. Furthermore, to verify the importance of fire prevention measures adopted during 2017 National Museum of History disaster prevention drill in accordance with the acquired weight data. The conclusion of the research, through the analysis of FDM and AHP, the top five that experts and scholars place importance on are "daily fire prevention management and facility inspections ", " fire safety management law system", "fire resistant material design", "regular rescue education /drills", and "disaster prevention measures under construction " in terms of the key indicators of fire prevention management for the reuse of historic buildings and monuments. The daily fire prevention management and fireproofing inspection: in order to strengthen the management of fire prevention in normal times, the practice of periodic inspections and improvements of various types of on-site hazardous factors should rely mainly on the conformation of spatial characters and imagery. In the meantime, fire safety management law system: It is the basic legal source of Taiwan’s fire disaster relief system, and its content clearly defines the overall direction of Taiwan’s fire administrative governance. Secondly, the items of "fire resistant material design, regular rescue education /drills and disaster prevention measures under construction are also essential elements for the evaluation of the fire prevention management project for the reuse of historic buildings and monuments. All of these are in line with the core concept of protecting lives and safeguarding assets, starting from offering an environment without fire safety concerns for places like historic buildings and monuments.

Full textThis thesis argues that an architectural surveying methodology via newspaper sampling offers new insight historic preservationists can use to more efficiently predict demolitions. Using data collected from the “Home Builder’s Department” section of the Indianapolis Star, this study compiles architectural information on 425 structures, mostly single-family and duplex residences, built between 1909 and 1926. Engaging with the historiographical themes of public history and architectural history as well as methodological components of historic preservation and digital humanities, the data-centric model relies on a collection of sampled newspaper articles, which were analyzed for specific information, compiled into a data repository with supplemental research, and then incorporated into the ArcGIS program for interpretation. The project provides a synopsis on early twentieth century building trends in Indianapolis and offers implications regarding the role that factors such as building type, geographic location, federal and municipal historic district protections, architectural style, and exterior building material or cladding play in predicting demolitions. Beyond these predictive results, this study also suggests a city-wide surveying methodology for organizing and analyzing large quantities of historic architecture for preservation planning initiatives.
