Full textThis thesis presents the social engineering as devised by Otto Neurath (1882-1945), an Austrian economist, sociologist, and philosopher. The introductory first part highlights certain issues of his biography which turned out significant in his subsequent idea of the necessity of a targeted and planned intervention in the social order. In part two, the technique of conceptual history reveals the mental representations at work in social engineering : the topos of "modernity" – built on a new concept of society, of time, and of the potential role of civil society – suggests the feasibility of managing a social group according to principles of rationalization of life.Neurath’s Gesellschaftstechnik is then reconstructed by the method of intellectual history, which shows the Viennese context, the dynamics involved in the 1918-19 German Revolution, and the economic concerns of the time as being essential for the development of his thought and his programme of social eudaimonism
Angio-Barros, Agnès d'. "Schneider et Cie et la naissance de l'ingénierie : des pratiques internes aux responsabilités extérieures." Paris 4, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998PA040032.
Full textThe Schneider et Cie company was created in 1836 in Le Creusot, in an area whose declining mining resources already led to use other sources of energy than coal. It chose the following strategy : to transform in external outlets the techniques it employed inside its factories, its work organization and its habit of realizing technology transfers between its different production units. So, until 1870, it built its prosperity on European railway equipment (locomotives, rails and bridges) and the development of steam navigation, and from 1870 to 1914, on the arms race between France and Germany. In the late 1890s, the high technical nature required by artillery and armour manufacture induced it to be interested in the electricity market, while its railway experience brought it to public works, in particular ports. During the interwar years, diversification went on, because Schneider's savoir-faire in many branches enabled it to realize, under the leadership of the in 1907 born “direction des travaux publics” ; [public works] (DTP), industrial plants (gunpowder factories, petroleum refineries), hydroelectric sites (barrages and power stations) and coupled understructures (ports-railways). This evolution was sanctioned in 1949, when DTP was transformed into a specialized subsidiary company, the “compagnie industrielle de travaux”

Full textWrought-iron and mild-steel riveted lattice girders are essential constituents of the French metallic construction heritage of 1850 to1930. In recent restorations of historic train sheds conducted by the French national railway company SNCF, riveted lattice girders haveoften been reinforced because of numerically identified stability problems. In reality, however, excessive deformations due to buckling arerarely witnessed. In order to limit invasive structural interventions, this thesis, therefore, proposes a novel integrated assessment methodology. The methodology, applied to riveted lattice girders in French metallic train sheds, is decomposed into three steps. Firstly, structural features conveying heritage value are identified relying on the history of engineering, and the impact of renovation strategies on the structure is discussed using an inventory of previous renovations. Secondly, modelling assumptions for structural analysis are debated based on a review of historical and recent literature. The rotational stiffness of riveted joints, a key parameter for buckling, is assessed using experimental and numerical investigations carried out on a reclaimed riveted lattice girder. Thirdly, current design criteria used for assessment are discussed by comparing them with historical verification methods. The proposed methodology sets the basis of an assessment framework that could be extended to heritage structures of all materials, and broadly to most types of existing structures
