Abstract:
<abstract><sec> <title>Background</title> <p>Hiking is one of the most popular leisure sport activities practiced in the Alps during the summer season, but bears the risk of mountain emergencies, accidents, and fatalities. This paper provides an updated analysis of hiking accidents for the years 2015 to 2021 in the Austrian Alps, thereby outlining fatal and non-fatal accident characteristics.</p> </sec><sec> <title>Methods</title> <p>For this retrospective analysis, mountain hiking accidents documented by the Austrian Alpine Police during a 7-year period were screened for potential exclusion criteria. The final sample size consisted of 7368 accidents and 7552 victims. The outcome measures were mainly specified by sex, age, injury degree, injury location, pathophysiological characteristics, and cause of injury.</p> </sec><sec> <title>Results</title> <p>The overall annual number of accidents showed a continuous increase from 428 in 2015 to 544 in 2021. In total, 7.1% of the total victims died during the 7-year period, with male hikers being significantly more affected than female hikers (m: 80.8%, f: 19.2%; p ≤ 0.001). The sex specific distribution for non-fatal hiking accidents was 55.9% in women and 44.1% in men. Male victims showed significantly more frequent cardiovascular events (m: 78.5%, f: 21.5%), multiple injuries (m: 60.2%, f: 39.8%), and wounds/blood loss (m: 57.4%, f: 42.6%) than female victims, whereas women showed more fractures (m: 31.5%, f: 68.5%) than men (p ≤ 0.001). Additionally, men were more likely to injure their abdomen/chest (3.7%), head (14.1%), and multiple body parts (26.5%), whereas women were more likely to injure their ankle or foot (42.3%). Finally, men were more likely to have an accident during the ascent (24.1%), whereas women during the descent (69.0%) (p ≤ 0.001).</p> </sec><sec> <title>Conclusion</title> <p>This paper provides the latest data and a deeper insight into sex-specific characteristics of mountain hiking accidents in the Austrian Alps.</p> </sec></abstract>

Abstract Objectives To identify changes in diet, physical activity and BMI after 3–6 months of relocation among international students in Georgia, USA. Methods Data were collected from 74 international students attending 2 urban universities in the Southeast. Students were interviewed within 10 days of arrival in the U.S and again 3–6 months later. Participants completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire that included a 26-item food frequency questionnaire, and questions on weekly physical activity, daily screen-time usage, sleep duration, and anthropometric measurements (body weight, height, and waist circumference), each measured twice and then averaged. Student t-test, Chi square and ANOVA analysis was done for participants who completed both waves (n = 74). Results Participants reported consistent food consumption within 3–6 months (mean difference &lt; 0.5 times per week). Physical activity frequency remained consistent (mean difference &lt; 0.5), but duration of almost all activities was increased. Participants reported increased hiking frequency and a significant increase in duration (frequency mean 0.05 to 0.09 times/week, 95% CI of (0.02–0.08) to (0.02–0.16), duration mean 21.1 to 117 minutes/week, 95% CI (14.1–28.0) to (94.7–138.5)). Screen time significantly increased (mean 4.2 to 7.0 hours/day, 95% CI (3.6–4.9) to (6.2–7.8)). Mean weight slightly increased (62.7 kg to 62.9 kg, 95% CI (60.5–65.0)), as did mean BMI (22.4 to 22.6, 95% CI (21.6–23.2)). However, around 37% of participants gained &gt; 10% of their baseline weight, while 32% lost &gt; 10% of their baseline weight. Almost half of participants (44.5%) reported that they had gained weight and 77% reported a decrease in their overall health. Conclusions Follow-up data suggests International students’ body weights changed drastically in a short time period which could potentially lead to negative health outcomes. Funding Sources None.

SummaryWe have surveyed the region of the X chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster which encodes the yellow, achaete and scute genes for restriction map variation. Two natural populations, one from North Carolina, U.S.A. and the other from southern Spain were screened for variation at about 70 restriction sites and for variation due to DNA insertion or deletion events in 120 kilobases of DNA. Mean heterozygosity per nucleotide was estimated to be 0·0024 and 15 large insertions were found in the 49 chromosomes screened. Extensive disequilibrium between polymorphic sites was found across much of the region in the North Carolina population. The frequency of large insertions, which usually correspond to transposable genetic elements, is significantly lower than has been observed in autosomal regions of the genome. This is predicted for X-linked loci by certain models of transposable element evolution, where copy number is restricted by virtue of the recessive deleterious effects of the insertions. Our results appear to support such models. The deficiency of insertions may in this case be enhanced by hitch-hiking effects arising from the high level of disequilibrium.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has led to imposed movement restrictions and lockdowns to curb the spread of COVID-19 cases in the community. These lockdowns had greatly changed people’s daily lives, including physical activity and sedentary behaviour. The aim of this scoping review was to establish available evidence linked to physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) among adults in the Asia region during the COVID-19 outbreak. This scoping review was conducted using Arksey & O’Malley’s protocol with 132 studies included after full-text screening. Changes in PA were reported in 122 studies and SB in 50 studies. Most studies reported a reduction in the total level of PA and a hike in sedentary and screen time. This decrement in PA and increment in SB was related to poor mental health, body weight increase and complications in COVID-19 patients, while participants who maintained or improved their PA reported better health outcomes.

Abstract:
This research was designed to assess the impact of a hiking trail or a four wheel drive road on our three focal groups (plants, aquatic animals and small mammals). Analyses in 1990 revealed large differences in species abundances and some instances of presence/absence differences among the three focal groups. Differences occurred both between the road right of way per se and nonroaded sections of the canyon bottom and between roaded and nonroaded sections of the canyon bottom. In 1990 we sampled small mammals and plants for 2.4 km up and downstream of the road terminus. In May, June, and July 1991 we extended sampled areas to approximately 4.8 km up and downstream of the end of the four wheel drive road. We also sampled aquatic organisms at Natural Bridges and in Canyonlands. In addition, we performed an experiment in which we placed screen mesh enclosures into the creek above and below Bates Wilson Campground, Canyonlands. This experiment was designed to assess sand infiltration rates and aquatic animal densities in areas lacking or possessing a road. Four small mammal trap grids (70 traps/grid) were trapped in the area lacking a road and in an area containing a road up Salt Creek. Each trap grid was trapped for four successive nights. Eight plant grids (4 up and 4 downstream of the road terminus) were examined for species composition and plant coverages. Each upstream grid consisted of fifty 1 m2 plots, while the downstream grids consisted of the same 50 plots plus 10 plots randomly located in the road right of way.

Abstract:
The plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) is essential for local defense and systemic acquired resistance (SAR). When plants, such as Arabidopsis, are challenged by different pathogens, an increase in SA biosynthesis generally occurs through transcriptional induction of the key synthetic enzyme isochorismate synthase 1 (ICS1). However, the regulatory mechanism for this induction is poorly understood. Using a yeast one-hybrid screen, we identified two transcription factors (TFs), NTM1-LIKE 9 (NTL9) and CCA1 HIKING EXPEDITION (CHE), as activators of ICS1 during specific immune responses. NTL9 is essential for inducing ICS1 and two other SA synthesis-related genes, PHYTOALEXIN-DEFICIENT 4 (PAD4) and ENHANCED DISEASE SUSCEPTIBILITY 1 (EDS1), in guard cells that form stomata. Stomata can quickly close upon challenge to block pathogen entry. This stomatal immunity requires ICS1 and the SA signaling pathway. In the ntl9 mutant, this response is defective and can be rescued by exogenous application of SA, indicating that NTL9-mediated SA synthesis is essential for stomatal immunity. CHE, the second identified TF, is a central circadian clock oscillator and is required not only for the daily oscillation in SA levels but also for the pathogen-induced SA synthesis in systemic tissues during SAR. CHE may also regulate ICS1 through the known transcription activators CALMODULIN BINDING PROTEIN 60g (CBP60g) and SYSTEMIC ACQUIRED RESISTANCE DEFICIENT 1 (SARD1) because induction of these TF genes is compromised in the che-2 mutant. Our study shows that SA biosynthesis is regulated by multiple TFs in a spatial and temporal manner and therefore fills a gap in the signal transduction pathway between pathogen recognition and SA production.

People of different age groups, one way or the other, are now connected to different mobile phone applications, such as, Social Networking, Chatting, VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) applications, Gaming etc. This rapid advancement has made it necessary for user interface designers of mobile applications to design user friendly interfaces for their applications, so that users can interact and use those applications with ease irrespective of their location. Usability plays a vital role for measuring the usefulness of such applications. After examining different experimental studies on usability assessment techniques imparted by various research workers, it has been determined that there is still a great deal of requirement where application designers have to guarantee more adept and improved usability of offline mobile applications, such as, Conversion Apps, offline encyclopedia, Translation apps, business use applications (office applications) etc. The primary objective of this study is to render a model for usability metrics of measuring the usability of office applications for smart phones. The effectiveness, usefulness and reliability of the proposed model is measured through two office applications named Office Suite Pro7 for Android and Office 365 for Windows 8 touch screen Smartphone.The results of usability testing and t-test show the significance of the proposed approach. The model in this study will enable the application designers to guarantee a more adept and enhanced usability of office applications for smart phones during the designing stage.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy results in excellent responses in the majority of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). However, point mutations in the BCR-ABL kinase domain that render the kinase less sensitive to imatinib are observed in approximately 40% of patients who relapse on therapy, but only in a minority of patients with primary resistance. The goal of our study was to determine the mutation patterns and treatment outcomes of patients with imatinib resistance in India. Methods The study was performed on a series of 309 CML patients between June 2003 and April 2016 who were tested for imatinib resistance as defined by primary or secondary imatinib failure. Mutation analysis on these patients was done upon treatment failure as per the definitions of the European LeukemiaNet. Survival estimates were calculated using Kaplan-Meier product-limit method. Overall survival was defined based from both time of imatinib failure and time of first detection of mutation to date of death or last follow-up. Direct sequencing of the BCR-ABL transcript by the Sanger method was used for IRMA (Imatinib Resistance Mutation Analysis) testing. Results 309 patients failing imatinib therapy who were screened for mutations were included in the study. The study group comprised of 67% (208) Male; median age of the study population was 38 years (Range 18 - 66 years) and the median duration of Imatinib usage until the resistance was 24months (Range 3 - 60 months). Of the 309 patients 42% (129) had primary failure and 58% (180) had secondary failure. 33% (102) of the study population had mutations detected of which 18 patients (18%) had primary failure and 84 patients (82%) had secondary failure to imatinib therapy. Specific mutations are detailed in table 1 and 2. Among the 309 patients a total of 226 patients underwent subsequent treatment. Among these 226 patients 180 patients underwent Imatinib dose hike and 31 patients had second line TKI with Nilotinib and 15 patients with Dasatinib. 98 patients (54%) in the Imatinib dose hike group had <1% BCR-ABL at 12months compared to 19 patients (61%) in the Nilotinib and 10(66.6%) in the Dasatinib group. Hematological response in these groups was assessed at 3months and Dasatinib induced notable response with 86% compared to 78.5% in the Nilotinib and 75.8% in the Imatinib dose hike groups (Table 3). Hematologic adverse events were generally mild to moderate in the Dasatinib and Nilotinib groups compared to Imatinib dose escalation, and most cytopenias were effectively managed with dose modifications. On survival analysis (after Imatinib resistance) the 2 year and 4-year survival for the whole group was 91.9% and 69.9% respectively. After a median follow-up of 48 months (Since Imatinib Resistance) the Median overall survival among patients with T315I mutation group (n=29) was 20 months and it was not achieved in those with non T315I mutations (n= 73 ) Conclusion: BCR-ABL1 kinase domain point mutations were detected in 33% of patients with treatment failure and progression. More than 50% of patients had optimal response to 2nd line TKI and Imatinib dose hike. Presence of the T315I mutation impairs overall survival. Abstract:
The emergence of multidrug resistance (MDR) among pathogenic bacteria is a root cause of severe infections. It is threatening to observe that MDR is also found in ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter species) pathogens, which has caused a hike in nosocomial infection. The diminishing spectrum of treatment against these pathogens demands an alternative realm of treatment. One such nosocomial pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii is known to cause pneumonia, blood stream infection, urinary tract infections, especially affecting immunocompromised individuals. Due to indiscriminate use of antibiotics, these pathogens have gained resistance to major classes of antibiotics through mutation and horizontal gene transfer via mobile genetic elements such as plasmids, transposons and integrons. This study mainly aims at identifying integron mediated drug resistance among clinical and environmental strains of A. baumannii. In this study, A. baumannii strains isolated from clinical and environmental samples were screened for antibiotic susceptibility tests. The multidrug resistant isolates were then checked for the presence of 3 classes of integrons viz Intl1 (Class 1), Intl2 (class 2) and, Intl3 (class 3). The integron region of the positive isolates was sequenced, and the drug-resistance gene cassettes were identified. All the clinical and environmental isolates were multidrug resistant. Three clinical isolates of A. baumannii showed positive amplification to Intl1 at 2kb, while none of the environmental isolates carried integrons, though they were multidrug resistant. The sequencing of the integron region of clinical isolates revealed the presence of three antibiotic resistance genes within the integron that encode resistance to chloramphenicol, rifampin, and aminoglycoside. This study prominently highlights the presence of class 1 integrons carrying different antimicrobial resistance determinants among A. baumannii isolated from clinical samples.

Gunungapi Purba (GAP) Nglanggeran merupakan lokasi wisata yang sangat memungkinkan untuk dikembangkan ke arah virtual. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah membuat 40 titik panorama sepanjang jalur pendakian kemudian hasilnya dicoba oleh pengunjung virtual dari berbagai generasi. Target responden dari penelitian ini adalah pengunjung yang tidak dapat mendaki di GAP Nglanggeran dengan berbagai alasan (tidak berada di kawasan wisata maupun tidak mampu mendaki karena alasan tertentu). Sebanyak 145 responden mencoba wisata virtual ini dengan kode batang yang telah diberikan. Media yang bisa digunakan adalah laptop, telfon pintar, dan layar televisi. Hasilnya, pengunjung virtual ini merasa bahwa wisata virtual yang dibuat sudah cukup bagus, mampu memberikan gambaran tentang jalur pendakian, dan mampu memberikan kesan nyata sepanjang jalur pendakian. Wisata ini juga memberikan kesempatan kepada pengunjung untuk wisata virtual dengan menggunakan kacamata VR. Hasilnya, Generasi Z merupakan kalangan yang paling antusian dengan hadirnya media tersebut. Abstract Virtual tour is the most possible tool for someone to explore other places without being limited by distance and time, especially in tourism. Nglanggeran ancient volcano is a very possible tourism spot that can be developed in a virtual. The purpose of this study was to create 40 panoramic photos along the tracking route and then the results were tested by virtual visitors from various generations. The target respondents of this research are visitors who cannot climb the Nglanggeran GAP for various reasons (not in the tourist area or who are not strong enough to climb for certain reasons). A total of 145 respondents tried this virtual tour with the barcode that had been provided. The media that can be used are laptops, smartphones, and television screens. As a result, these virtual visitors feel that the virtual tour created is able to provide an overview of the hiking trail and is able to give a real impression along the hiking track. This tourism tour also provides an opportunity for visitors to try virtual tours using VR glasses. As a result, Generation Z is the most enthusiastic about the presence of the media.

It’s one thing to wake up in the middle of the night to an imagined terror. It’s another thing to be wide awake and feel the hand of fear creeping up your spine. Camping alone one winter night above Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, I heard (or did I dream I heard?) scratching on the wall of the tent and the heavy breathing of an animal outside in the snow. I was so frightened I couldn’t voice the scream stifled in my throat. Or was it in my dream that I wasn’t able to make any sound? On waking I wasn’t sure what had or hadn’t happened—or whether it was all in my mind. An even more uncanny experience came on another moonlit night in the depths of the Maze in Canyonlands National Park in southeast Utah. A friend and I had walked a mile down the canyon from our campsite, under the shadow of the towering walls within that vast winding labyrinth. Hiking in the light of a full moon without flashlights, we felt a sense of wild, animal abandonment. With reckless exuberance we’d been howling like wolves at the moon. But then we found ourselves standing before a canyon wall covered with ancient figures painted by archaic artists some two thousand years ago. These were spirit beings standing vigil—long, ethereal shadows hovering on the surface of the rock. Whether they were guarding, witnessing, or offering protection, I didn’t know. But in the hollowed-out world of moonlight and shadow that formed the Maze, I sensed the presence of something I couldn’t name. It’s a place about as far away from other people as you can get in the lower forty-eight, yet for an instant I had an uncanny awareness of a finger lightly touching me on the back of the neck. I’d been taken into a profoundly deeper meaning of fear. Three days earlier we had driven seven hours from the Hite Marina on Lake Powell along a tortuous dirt road, part of the old Flint Trail. It was a belly-scraping, wheel-spinning, bronco-twisting ride, with hairpin turns around huge boulders and narrow rocky ledges.
