Abstract:
This chapter examines in detail the theoretical factors that explain party vibrancy: Purpose, Trauma, Channels of Ambition, and moderate Exit Barriers. Purpose fosters prospective loyalty. A party exhibits Purpose when it intensely defends a more or less coherent set of ideas, ideology, or a general project. Trauma forges retrospective loyalty among party members. It refers to shared emotions derived from the shared suffering of harsh experiences. Channels of Ambition captures the idea of parties as organizations comprising office seekers. More specifically, it builds on Aldrich’s (1995) claim that parties solve collective action problems for ambitious politicians. Finally, it discusses the theoretical effects of Exit Barriers. This factor fosters partisan organization when politicians from a political party perceive moderately high costs of leaving their organization to join a different party or of pursuing a career as an independent. Finally, the chapter also discusses the interaction among these factors.

Harcourt, Alison, George Christou, and Seamus Simpson. Global Standard Setting in Internet Governance. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198841524.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The standards development organization’s (SDO) role in Internet governance is notable given its central place in society. The bulk of decision-making for the Internet takes place in technical standards fora, such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which have no formal state or public sector body membership. Recent years have seen a significant degree of spill-over of highly politicized policy areas such as data protection, digital rights management, security, and bandwidth and spectrum to SDOs, policies which were formerly domains of the nation state. SDOs are grappling with the efficiency of cloud storage, limits of spectrum use, and autonomy and management of devices. Security questions abound as demonstrated by the Cambridge Analytica scandal and Snowden revelations. The book breaks new ground by exploring decision-making within SDOs. It provides an invaluable insight into a world, which, although highly technical, affects the way in which citizens live and work on a daily basis. The work stands out from existing literature on Internet governance, which focuses on international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). As such, it adds significantly to the trajectory of research that explores the relationship between politics and protocols. It explains the interplay between different interests and whether civil society and other actors are able to defend and promote citizens’ rights within SDOs. As such, it contributes to knowledge about how the public interest is promoted.

Abstract:
Wealthy American Catholics have created foundations, institutes, and research centers to endorse and defend neoliberal capitalism. Since the 1980s, a network of rich Catholics have supported their class privilege by defending strong private property rights, free markets, and free trade on the economic front, and by favoring antiabortion and anti-gay-marriage positions in social debates. The chapter contextualizes Catholic establishment of elective affinities with capitalism through several organizations, including Legatus and the Napa Institute; through connections between elites and Catholic higher education, such as Ave Maria University; and by Catholic CEOs whose business practices flout Catholic social teaching. Since the 2013 election of Pope Francis, who has explicitly attacked greed and neoliberal economics for leaving the poor and vulnerable undefended, these top Catholic entrepreneurs, together with allied clergy and apologists, have mobilized in ways that seemingly disregard the immigrant roots of most Catholics as well as the papal call to care for the nation’s neediest.

Abstract:
This chapter goes into depth about union reformers' overarching critique, that the union engages in too much cooperation with the company. Such cooperation often manifests itself in joint safety, performance, and team-based management initiatives. These workers' assessment of programs such as Total Quality Management and the implementation of the High Performance Work Organization illustrate two arguments. First, workers possess the resources of their experience to recognize and reject ideological efforts to align their interests with those of the company. Second, scholars and labor union members alike should be skeptical about worker inclusion programs that ask the workers to give up their autonomy from and antagonism toward their employer. Such independence is necessary to the fight to defend and extend workers' standard of living during contract negotiations and grievance procedures.

Alter, Karen J., and Laurence R. Helfer. The Andean Tribunal of Justice. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198795582.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the Andean Tribunal Justice (the ATJ or Tribunal) and considers how the ATJ has fared during a period of regional political crisis and declining governmental support for Andean Community institutions. The “island” of narrow, intermediate, and extensive authority for intellectual property disputes that developed prior to the mid-2000s is resilient and even thriving, even as the ATJ’s de jure authority has contracted and its de facto authority has been threatened by proposals by Ecuador to merge the Andean Community with MERCOSUR and by politically high-profile noncompliance suits involving Ecuadoran import restrictions. Yet even in these contentious cases, the Andean legal system—backstopped by overlapping constraints of the World Trade Organization (WTO)—pushed Ecuador to offer plausible legal grounds to defend its import restrictions. The chapter concludes by exploring the relationship between the ATJ’s de facto authority and its limited power to shape regional economic policy.
