Abstract:
This chapter provides a list of all the parameters and summarizes their current status while also discussing the problem with the High–High term. These include the parameters used to mollify the Reynolds stress in space and along the coarse scale flow, the parameter used to mollify the velocity field in space, the lifespan parameter, and the parameter used to make sure the phase functions are high frequency. In addition to the High–High term, the chapter considers the Transport term, which becomes large when a short lifespan is chosen. It also shows how the Transport term could be made to have the size required for regularity up to 1/3.

Full text
Abstract:
The ultimate importance of rotor position and speed information in permanent magnet synchronous (PMS) machines control, and the industry interest to the rotor and speed sensorless systems as a cost-saving and practical alternative to the motor control with mechanical sensors are emphasized. Major position and speed estimation schemes are then presented in detail. These are the: back electromotive force (EMF)-based method; flux linkage method; hypothesis rotor position method; saliency-based method, including high frequency signal injection and inverter switching harmonics schemes; and finally, the observer-based method, including state observer and extended Kalman filter-based schemes. Each scheme was discussed by presenting the corresponding fundamental principles, followed by the appropriate motor model, estimation procedure, and the implementation. Demanding criteria such as accuracy, robustness, swiftness, and capability of working over the entire range of motor operation are discussed with each method.

Abstract:
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous plasma suspension enriched with a supraphysiologic concentrate of platelets, isolated through a process of centrifugation. Administered locally (usually by injection or direct application) to areas of injury, PRP contains a high density of growth factors, which are believed to potentiate the body’s natural regenerative processes. Over the past 20 years, interest in PRP therapy has grown exponentially, as it offers a relatively safe, autologous treatment modality. It has gained particular popularity for a wide variety of musculoskeletal pathologies. There is a growing body of scientific literature that is giving further insight into PRP’s therapeutic effects. This chapter will review the history, preparation techniques, basic science justifications, current clinical evidence, as well as procedural considerations for the therapeutic use of PRP.

Abstract:
Stars are elite performers who either exhibit exceedingly high quantities of output or produce output not easily substituted by good or even very good workers. Although star performers have always existed, relatively recent changes in the workforce and economy may be leading to a substantial increase in not only their production but also their frequency. As a result, both academics and practitioners are progressively recognizing the importance of stars to individuals, teams, organizations, and even entire industries. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the theoretical and empirical work surrounding stars, to distill what is known and unknown, and what is fact and what is myth, and to outline the direction of current and future research.

Abstract:
This article focuses on the potential therapeutic uses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in movement disorders. The brain can be stimulated with low levels of direct electrical current, called direct current polarization (tDCS). High-frequency repetitive TMS might increase brain excitability and be used for therapy in Parkinson's disease. Single sessions with TMS, however, have not proven to be very effective. Treatment with tDCS has been performed in some open studies with some success, but these results need confirmation. Physiological findings in dystonia reveal a decrease in intracortical inhibition. There have been a few studies of patients with Tourette's syndrome with mixed results. To date, clinical results with TMS in movement disorders have been mixed, and more work will be needed to clarify the potential clinical role of TMS.

Simpson, A., E. Aarons, and R. Hewson. Marburg and Ebola viruses. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198570028.003.0038.

Full text
Abstract:
Infection with Marburg and Ebola viruses cause haemorrhagic fevers that are characterized by organ malfunction, bleeding complications, and high mortality. The viruses are members of the family Filoviridae, a group of membrane-enveloped filamentous RNA viruses. Five distinct species of the genus Ebolavirus have been reported; the genus Marburgvirus contains only one species. Both Marburg and Ebola virus diseases are zoonotic infections whose primary hosts are thought to be bats. The initial human infection is acquired from wildlife and subsequent person-to-person spread propagates the outbreak until it is brought under control. Ebola and Marburg viruses are classified as hazard or risk group 4 pathogens because of the very high case fatality rates observed for Ebola and Marburg virus diseases, the frequency of person-to-person transmission and community spread, and the lack of an approved vaccine or antiviral therapy. This mandates that infectious materials are handled and studied in maximum containment laboratory facilities. Epidemics have occurred sporadically since the discovery of Marburg in 1967 and Ebola virus in 1976. While some of these outbreaks have been relatively large, infecting a few hundreds of individuals, they have generally occurred in rural settings and have been controlled relatively easily. However, the 2013–2016 epidemic of Ebola virus disease in West Africa was different, representing the first emergence of the Zaire species of Ebola in a high-density urban location. Consequently, this has been the largest recorded filovirus outbreak in both the number of people infected and the range of geographical spread. Many of the reported and confirmed cases were among people living in high-density and impoverished urban environments. The chapter summarizes the most up-to-date taxonomic status of the family Filoviridae. It focuses on Marburg and Ebola viruses in a historical context, culminating in the 2013–2016 outbreak of Ebola virus in West Africa. Virus biology of the most well-studied member is described, with details of the viral genome and the protein machinery necessary to propagate viruses at the molecular and cellular level. This information is used to build a wider-scale virus–host perspective with detail on the pathology and pathogenesis of Ebola virus disease. The consequences of cell infection are examined, together with our current understanding of the immune response to Ebola virus, leading to a broader description of the clinical features of disease. The chapter closes by drawing information together in a section on diagnosis, ecology, prevention, and control.
