Abstract:
This chapter describes the cohomology of Higgs isocrystals, which are introduced to replace the notion of Higgs bundles. The link between these two notions uses Higgs envelopes and calls to mind the link between classical crystals and modules with integrable connections. After discussing Higgs isocrystals and Higgs crystals, cohomology of Higgs isocrystals, and representations of the fundamental group, the chapter presents the main result: the construction of a fully faithful functor from the category of Higgs (iso)crystals satisfying an overconvergence condition to that of small generalized representations. It also proves the compatibility of this functor with the natural cohomologies and concludes by comparing the cohomology of Higgs isocrystals with Faltings cohomology.

Abstract:
Chapter 8 deals with the apparent perching of the physical vacuum state in the universe on the edge between stability and meta-stability, at least within the standard model, in light of the mass of the recently discovered Higgs boson. Standard model calculations mapping vacuum stability as a function of Higgs boson and top quark masses are presented. The dramatic unveiling of the Higgs boson signal by the enormous detectors at the Large Hadron Collider is reviewed. Possible interpretations and implications of meta-stability, including unlikely doomsday scenarios, are discussed. The hierarchy problem is presented as a theoretical conundrum arising from the vast gap between the Higgs boson mass and the Planck mass scale at which an as-yet undeveloped theory of quantum gravity becomes essential. Various speculative theoretical approaches, including supersymmetry, to physics beyond the standard model that might address the hierarchy problem and other outstanding particle physics mysteries are mentioned.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of a new approach to the p-adic Simpson correspondence, focusing on representations of the fundamental group and the torsor of deformations. The discussion covers the notation and conventions, small generalized representations, the torsor of deformations, Faltings ringed topos, and Dolbeault modules. The chapter begins with a short aside on small generalized representations in the affine case, which will be used as intermediary for the study of Dolbeault representations. It then introduces the notion of generalized Dolbeault representation for a small affine scheme and the companion notion of solvable Higgs module, and constructs a natural equivalence between these two categories. It establishes links between these notions and Faltings smallness conditions and relates this to Hyodo's theory. It also describes the Higgs–Tate algebras and concludes with an analysis of the logical links for a Higgs bundle, between smallness and solvability.

Abstract:
Cross sections have been measured over 14 orders of magnitude at the LHC, with good agreement in general with predictions from QCD and the Standard Model. The only grain of salt of this success story is that, up to now, no unambiguous signs of new physics has been spotted. The most visible discovery of the LHC (to date) has been that of the Higgs boson. In this book, the theoretical and experimental knowledge built up over the first 8 chapters is applied to physics at the LHC, and especially to measurements of the Higgs boson, and interpretations of its properties. Precision Standard Model measurements are used to search for, and constrain, the presence of new physics.

Abstract:
Before the LHC, there was the Tevatron, which ran at the high-energy frontier for approximately 25 years. Many of the modern analysis tools used at the LHC were first developed at the Tevatron. In this chapter, benchmark data analyses (and related theoretical tools), such as for W/Z bosons, photons, and jets, are described. The apex of the Tevatron was the discovery of the top quark. Measurements of the top quark cross section and of the top quark mass are examined and tt¯ asymmetry measurements and predictions are reviewed. Although attributed to many Beyond-the-Standard Model scenarios, the ultimate explanation for the larger than expected asymmetry turned out to be higher order QCD. There were very active Higgs boson searches at the Tevatron. Although the Tevatron was able to somewhat exclude the allowed Higgs mass range, time ran out before any observation could be made. This was left to the LHC.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, there have been categorical models of bipolar disorder and dimensional models of bipolar disorder. This chapter seeks to outline the history of these models as well as some recent supporting research. The models are evaluated in two ways; how well they reflect the underlying nature of bipolar disorder, and how useful they are to the patient and to the clinician in undertaking treatment decisions. The dimensional model posits that depression and bipolar lie on a continuum with pure unipolar depression at one end, bipolar disorder at the other, and some experience of highs without diagnosable (hypo)mania in-between. The categorical model posits that depression and bipolar are entirely separate conditions and that bipolar I and II are separate conditions. It is the position of the authors that the categorical model is a better reflection of the underlying nature of bipolar disorder and has proved more useful in clinical practice.

Abstract:
Drawing Physics is a collection of 51 essays each one organized around a simple, informative, line drawing that conveys a key idea in the history of physics. The essays, each approximately 1000 words long, are chronologically ordered from Thales, who around 600 BCE explained and used the principles of triangulation, to Peter Higgs, who received the Nobel Prize in 2012 for his prediction of the Higgs boson. The essays expand on the science conveyed in each drawing and place that science in a broader cultural context. The essays are grouped into five sections: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Early Modern Period, Nineteenth Century, and Twentieth Century and Beyond. Each essay stands alone and requires no background in physics or mathematics.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on representations of the fundamental group and the torsor of deformations. It considers the case of an affine scheme of a particular type, qualified also as small by Faltings. It introduces the notion of Dolbeault generalized representation and the companion notion of solvable Higgs module, and then constructs a natural equivalence between these two categories. It proves that this approach generalizes simultaneously Faltings' construction for small generalized representations and Hyodo's theory of p-adic variations of Hodge–Tate structures. The discussion covers the relevant notation and conventions, results on continuous cohomology of profinite groups, objects with group actions, logarithmic geometry lexicon, Faltings' almost purity theorem, Faltings extension, Galois cohomology, Fontaine p-adic infinitesimal thickenings, Higgs–Tate torsors and algebras, Dolbeault representations, and small representations. The chapter also describes the descent of small representations and applications and concludes with an analysis of Hodge–Tate representations.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is the first to make chi-squared model testing, one of the data analysis methods used to discover the Higgs boson and gravitational waves, accessible to undergraduate students in introductory physics laboratory courses. By including uncertainties in the curve fitting, chi-squared data analysis improves on the centuries old ordinary least squares and linear regression methods and combines best fit parameter estimation and model testing in one method. A toolkit of essential statistical and experimental concepts is developed from the ground up with novel features to interest even those familiar with the material. The presentation of one- and two-parameter chi-squared model testing, requiring only elementary probability and algebra, is followed by case studies that apply the methods to simple introductory physics lab experiments. More challenging topics, requiring calculus, are addressed in an advanced topics chapter. This self-contained and student-friendly introduction to chi-squared analysis and model testing includes a glossary, end-of-chapter problems with complete solutions, and software scripts written in several popular programming languages, that the reader can use for chi-squared model testing. In addition to introductory physics lab students, this accessible introduction to chi-squared analysis and model testing will be of interest to all who need to learn chi-squared model testing, e.g. beginning researchers in astrophysics and particle physics, beginners in data science, and lab students in other experimental sciences.
