Abstract:
This collection brings together art historians, museum professionals, conservators, and conservation scientists whose work involves Rembrandt van Rijn and associated artists such as Gerrit Dou, Jan Lievens, and Ferdinand Bol. The range of subjects considered is wide: from the presentation of convincing evidence that Rembrandt and his contemporary Frans Hals rubbed elbows in the Amsterdam workshop of Hendrick Uylenburgh to critical reassessments of the role of printmaking in Rembrandt's studio, his competition with Lievens as a landscape painter, his reputation as a collector, and much more. Developed from a series of international conferences devoted to charting new directions in Rembrandt research, these essays illuminate the current state of Rembrandt studies and suggest avenues for future inquiry.

Abstract:
After the collapse of the USSR, Russia is in a state of crisis. The population of the country remembers its past, but does not know what its future will be. The old scale of values is no longer working, and the new one has not yet developed. The crisis affected all the main sectors of the country's life, including education. The continuity of generations was under threat. The situation is aggravated by the external expansion of the initiators of the next redistribution of the world. As a" Trojan horse", they impose values that are alien to us, aimed at destroying the cultural code of Russia, at breaking the connection between generations. Youth, deprived of social immunity, quite easily enters the path of corruption and perversion, destroying itself and the world around it. The authors of the stated monograph, in search of a worthy answer to the historical challenge of Russia, turn to those who are concerned about the fate of the Fatherland and on whom the future of our Motherland depends.

Perone, James E. Smash Hits. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216015468.

Full text
Abstract:
We are what we listen to. That's the premise of this study of 100 songs that have shaped and defined the American experience, from the Colonial period to the present. Well-known music author James Perone looks at 100 songs that helped tell America's story. He examines why each song became a hit, what cultural and social values it embodies, what issues it touches upon, what audiences it attracted, and what made it such a definitive part of American history and popular culture. The chart-topping singles presented here crossed gender, age, race, and class lines to appeal to the mass American audience. The book discusses patriotic songs, minstrel music, and sacred songs and hymns as well as music in the broad categories of pop, rock, hip hop, jazz, country, and folk. An introduction provides an overview of the history and significant issues raised by the songs as a whole. Individual songs are then presented chronologically, based on when they were written. The revealing commentary for each "hit" is not only interesting and fun, but reveals what it was like to live in the United States at a particular time by unveiling the social, economic, and political issues—as well as the musical tastes—that made life what it was.

Abstract:
This chapter is a thematic sketch of Gandhi’s life and the lessons we may learn from it. The chapter discusses his early life and his experiences in South Africa which had a profound transformative effect on him, and how subsequently he was pulled into the vortex of Indian politics and the freedom movement. While describing the life experience of Gandhi, the chapter brings into focus a number of key Gandhian concepts like satyagraha that underlie Gandhi’s philosophy and practices. More important is our attempt to make Gandhi’s life relevant to readers and to show how the Mahatma’s life is a splendid blend of thought and action.

Liu, Chih-Chieh. Denaturalizing Coco’s “Sexy” Hips. Edited by Melissa Blanco Borelli. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199897827.013.018.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter, starting from a seemingly standardized dance promotion in Mandarin pop, one of the dominant music genres in East Asia, attempts to reveal the cultural logics and to denaturalize the corporeal discourses behind what is commonly perceived as the “naturally” spectacular hip movement of a Chinese-American superstar, Coco Lee, whose dance is, in Taiwan, often linked with the idea of “sexiness” and “American-ness.” Calling upon Judith Butler’s idea of performativity (1990) in tandem with Richard Dyer’s notion of star image (1979) and the concept of the dancing body (Thomas 1995; Foster 1996), this chapter, using music video analysis (Vernallis 2004; Beebe and Middleton 2007), delineates Coco’sHip Hop Tonight(2006) to point out the contradictions and reversals of the body in contemporary multimedial context in that “sexiness” is desexualized, “American-ness” is Sinocized, and the meaning of “Chinese-ness” continues to shift according to local cultural and political sensibilities. In this process, music video becomes an intersecting point in which cultural boundaries negotiate and body politics fight to gain the upper hand, revealing a web of complex power struggles in Taiwan where meaning of the body is locally produced yet globally contested.

Abstract:
So much for the logic of misogyny. What about its substance? How does it manifest itself in contemporary cultures like those of America and Australia, i.e., suspected of being post-patriarchal? It is argued that the patriarchal norms and expectations misogyny continues to enforce largely consist in an unjust (pseudo-)moral code, obligating women to give, not withhold or eschew, or to ask him to give her, moral goods such as attention, care, sympathy, and other forms of feminine-coded labor. And privileged men’s corresponding sense of entitlement manifests itself in taking her attention and attraction (as in catcalling and pick-up artistry), the conversational “floor” (as in mansplaining), public space (as in manspreading), bodily autonomy (as in Donald Trump’s infamous pussy-grabbing remarks), and sex (as in rape culture). This sense of ownership may even extend to the persons in one’s family. A vivid manifestation of this last is family annihilators.

Full text
Abstract:
This is the only volume of its kind that addresses the long and complicated history of translations of Virgil, whose poems were at the centre of the educational curriculum and the wider culture of Europe until the nineteenth century. While this collection of chapters covers numerous European traditions (English, French, German, Greek, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish), the volume also extends its focus beyond European translations to translations into Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Russian, Slovenian, Turkish, and the young world language, Esperanto. Classic translations such as those of Dryden, Du Bellay, Leopardi, Valéry, and Voß are considered alongside more surprising names, including Pasolini and Wordsworth, and recent interventions, for example by Heaney and Veyne. Each essay provides theoretical background for the case studies considered. In the Introduction the editors draw attention to some overarching issues. The volume closes with contributions by two active translators, Alessandro Fo in Italian and Josephine Balmer in English. This volume is dedicated to the study of translations of Virgil as a national and transnational cultural phenomenon and is an invitation to further study of this important topic.

Zola, Émile. His Excellency Eugène Rougon. Edited by Brian Nelson. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780198748250.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
‘He loved power for power's sake . . . He was without question the greatest of the Rougons.’ His Excellency Eugène Rougon (1876) is the sixth novel in Zola's twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle. A political novel set in the corridors of power and in the upper échelons of French Second Empire society, including the Imperial court, it focuses on the fluctuating fortunes of the authoritarian Eugène Rougon, the 'vice-Emperor'. But it is more than just a chronicle. It plunges the reader into the essential dynamics of the political: the rivalries, the scheming, the jockeying for position, the ups and downs, the play of interests, the lobbying and gossip, the patronage and string-pulling, the bribery and blackmail, and, especially, the manipulation of language for political purposes. The novel's themes-especially its treatment of political discourse-have remarkable contemporary resonance. His Excellency Eugène Rougon is about politics everywhere.

Full text
Abstract:
Whilst meticulous in its analysis of individual books or logoi, modern scholarship has either taken Herodotus’ engagement with his wider world predominantly for granted or concerned itself primarily with merely ‘explaining’ certain aspects of Herodotus’ work or his achievement with reference to a single context or genre. In attempting to provide a more rounded consideration of questions of Herodotean audience reception, one that incorporates shared knowledge of Homeric epic or traditions relating to (still) powerful clans or families, ethnographic knowledge, Herodotean source ascriptions, and the rise and fall of great states and individuals, this chapter demonstrates that there is much to be gained from studying Herodotus’ engagement with both his world and the audiences that he set out to inform, challenge, and entertain.

Yamamoto, Kei. His Good Name. Edited by Christina Geisen, Jean Li, and Steven Shubert. Lockwood Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5913/2021372.

Full text
Abstract:
The wish to affiliate with a specific cultural, social, or ethnical group is as important today as it was in past societies, such as that of the ancient Egyptians. The same significance applies to the self-presentation of an individual within such a group. Although it is inevitable that we perceive ancient cultures through the lens of our time, place, and value systems, we can certainly try to look beyond these limitations. Questions of how the ancient Egyptians saw themselves and how individuals tried to establish and thus present themselves in society are central pieces of the puzzle of how we interpret this ancient culture. This volume focuses on the topic of identity and self-presentation, tackling the subject from many different angles: the ways in which social and personal identities are constructed and maintained; the manipulations of culture by individuals to reflect real or aspirational identities; and the methods modern scholars use to attempt to say something about ancient persons. Building on the work of Ronald J. Leprohon, to whom this volume is dedicated, contributions in this volume present an overview of our current state of understanding of patterns of identity and self-presentation in ancient Egypt. The contributions approach various aspects of identity and self-presentation through studies of gender, literature, material culture, mythology, names, and officialdom.

Carleton Paget, James, and Simon Gathercole, eds. Celsus in his World. Cambridge University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781108957861.

Full text
Abstract:
Celsus penned the earliest known detailed attack upon Christianity. While his identity is disputed and his anti-Christian treatise, entitled the True Word, has been exclusively transmitted through the hands of the great Christian scholar Origen, he remains an intriguing figure. In this interdisciplinary volume, which brings together ancient philosophers, specialists in Greek literature, and historians of early Christianity and of ancient Judaism, Celsus is situated within the cultural, philosophical, religious and political world from which he emerged. While his work is ostensibly an attack upon Christianity, it is also the defence of a world in which Celsus passionately believed. It is the unique contribution of this volume to give voice to the many dimensions of that world in a way that will engage a variety of scholars interested in late antiquity and the histories of Christianity, Judaism and Greek thought.

Full text
Abstract:
Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a policy-support instrument and approach that seeks to assess the health impacts of projects, programmes and policies on population health. The ultimate goal of HIA is to systematically predict health impacts and subsequently inform the intersectoral decision- and policy-making processes of these impacts. This resource examines how the process of integrating HIA with policy can take place. Introductory chapters outline the HIA process and provide a conceptual foundation for the book. Then, drawing from experiences of HIA practice and research globally, country-specific experiences are presented to examine HIA's relationship with the policy process. Throughout, checklists and learning points are provided to assist in the understanding of the concepts and examples discussed.

Gray, Vivienne. Thucydides and His Continuators. Edited by Sara Forsdyke, Edith Foster, and Ryan Balot. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199340385.013.41.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the ways in which later historians completed the unfinished history of Thucydides. Cratippus (the author of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia), Xenophon and Theopompus all wrote completions of Thucydides. They also attached continuations to their completions, going well beyond the endpoint Thucydides envisaged at 5.26. This chapter mentions the continuations only where relevant, however, choosing instead to focus on the completions because they are our first receptions of Thucydides. It considers the ways in which they did or did not imitate their great predecessor and how in other ways they might have engaged with his narrative. Xenophon’s completion is the main focus because it is the only one that is fully extant.

Abstract:
Charles Bell died in 1842. Many of his achievements have been forgotten, but they were nevertheless substantial. Physicians and surgeons know of him primarily because of the facial weakness and its associated signs named after him. New generations of scientists and educators, of surgeons and artists, should bear in mind the foundations on which they themselves build, but they should avoid the mistakes made by Bell. His quarrels with others over priority for certain discoveries, and the alteration of his previously published papers to support his claims, should be recalled—if at all—with regret for the behavior that marred an otherwise exceptional career. He was a brilliant but flawed human being who contributed much to the advance of knowledge.

Klein, Marty. His Porn, Her Pain. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400663666.

Full text
Abstract:
Written by an award-winning author and veteran sex therapist, this practical, innovative, and often passionate book addresses the explosion of pornography use, advises couples on defusing conflict about it, guides parents in helping their kids deal with it, advises people concerned about their use of it, and shows how honest talk about sex can resolve America’s "porn panic." When you first logged onto the Internet in the 1990s, did you ever wonder, "What do you suppose would happen if the United States were flooded with free, high-quality pornography?" We now know the answer, says Dr. Marty Klein, as this is exactly what took place 15 years ago. Written by an award-winning author and veteran sex therapist, this practical, innovative, and often passionate book addresses the explosion of pornography use, advises couples on defusing conflict about it, guides parents in helping their kids deal with it, advises people concerned about their use of it, and shows how honest talk about sex can resolve America’s "porn panic." So what did happen when Internet porn flooded America? The rates of sexual assault, divorce, and child molestation declined. And yet various religious groups, politicians, some feminists, anti-trafficking activists, and many marriage counselors talk unceasingly about the damage porn viewing is doing to our society. They have created a "PornPanic" that has demonized the recreation of some 60 million Americans. Americans are always ready for new reasons to feel guilty and ashamed of their sexuality, and Internet porn is the newest reason. Wives and girlfriends worry that they can’t compete with it; teens use it as a misguided substitute for sex education, often disturbed by intense adults-only imagery; and psychologically vulnerable people get caught up in hours of compulsive porn surfing every night, feeling isolated and inadequate as a result. Fortunately for his many readers, however, using clear reasoning, clinical expertise, and political savvy, Klein shows that for most people, porn is not the real problem. With the experience gained from 34 years of doing therapy?that’s 35,000 sessions?Klein asks a simple but profound question: when we talk about porn, what are we really talking about? This book eases readers’ minds as Klein addresses common concerns and debunks common myths while identifying what we should be concerned about. Most importantly, the author explains how we can heal America’s obsession with porn by engaging in honest talk about sex?something he knows is neither simple nor easy. The text includes sample conversations to help adults talk to each other about pornography, and suggestions for parents on how to talk to their kids about porn?healthy discussions to help their kids develop "Porn Literacy." This book offers honest, thorough, expert information desperately needed by a nation of people driven to panic about pornography.

One of the greatest errors in the history of economics is to presume Hayek had a single stance toward the epistemology of the market and of agents. We report on recent research that argues for three different positions over the course of his life: Knowledge dispersed, tacit, and impersonal. This trajectory will prove significant for the rest of our narrative.
