Abstract:
This master’s thesis deals with the modelling of electronic properties of graphite crystal, which are measurable using a spectrometer based on high frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR for short) located in laboratories of CEITEC BUT. This is especially the band structure of graphite and its Landau levels. The theoretical part of the thesis describes key effects and connections from quantum mechanics and definitions of important terms from solid state physics, which are used to describe the crystalline structure of graphite and its electronic properties. Furthermore, the project describes the HFEPR spectrometer and its functional principle. In the practical part of the thesis, there are numerical models of the band structure of graphite and of its Landau levels and description of the preparation of a graphite sample for measurement. At the end of the practical part there is the analysis of measurements results, namely the cyclotron resonance and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, thanks to which it is possible to determine physical parameters of the sample, such as effective mass of charge carriers and fundamental frequency.

The methanol transformation into light olefins was investigated over the molecular sieves HZSM-5, HFER, SAPO-34 and HMCM-22. FRX, DRX, nitrogen fisisorption, MEV, IR with pyridine adsorption and NH3-TPD techniques were used for the physiochemical characterization of the samples. Their catalytic performances were evaluated and compared at isoconversion initial conditions (755%). It was verified that the acid and structural characteristics strongly affected the catalytic performance with respect to activity, stability and selectivity to the reaction products. The most stable sample was HZSM, which presented higher density of strong sites and a porous structure that permits a tridimensional circulation of the molecules. The least stable was SAPO-34, which presented the lowest concentration of strong acid sites and showed a structure with cavities with narrow openings (4Å). This structure restricts the access of the reactants to the acid sites of the catalyst. In what concerns the selectivity to the olefins, the former catalyst was the most selective to propene and the latter was the most selective to ethene. Although ferrerite was not selective to light olefins, it showed promising behavior concerning the DME formation from methanol. On the other hand, HMCM-22 was selective to the light olefins and the hydrocarbons with 4, 5, 6 or more carbon atoms. The catalytic performance under different reaction temperatures (300, 400 and 500C) was investigated. The lowest catalytic activity was verified under temperatures starting from 400C. SAPO-34 was the only catalyst whose selectivity to light olefins was not sensitive to temperature variations. HZSM-5 and HMCM-22 had their selectivity to olefins increased and HFER had it decreased as the temperature was increased

Abstract:
The High Flux Engineering Test Reactor (HFETR) is loaded with complex geometry assemblies, taking on strong heterogeneity. These features call for more advanced core analysis and fuel management methodologies compared with traditional PWR. Based on the two-step method, a fuel management simulation platform HEFT was developed, which is a 3-D core fuel management transport calculation program of HFETR. In HEFT, the lattice code HEFT-lat has the abilitiesto describe complex assembly geometriesof HFETR, whereby mitigate errors brought by geometrical approximations.DNTR, a triangular mesh nodal SN method code, is employed to solve the transport equation. This paper introduces the development backgrounds of HEFT, introduces the principle and function of the three main modules of HEFT, that is HEFT-lat?HEFT-core and HEFT-int, the calculation method of lattice parameter and reactor loop calculation method are described. By follow-up calculation of 81-I to 89-II of HFETR core and comparison of intial critical keff, the control rod position during shutting down and the neutron flux, thus obtains the calculation deviation. The result shows the validity of the HEFT code, the lattice and reactor core calculation model. Thus, HEFT has already successfully applied to the fuel management calculation of HFETR.

Abstract:
Natural circulation is being used as an important circulation to remove reactor residual heat. In the core of High Flux Engineering Trial Reactor of China (HFETR), the coolant is driven by pumps normally and flows from upside to downside in the core. When HFETR is shut down or runs in low power, the natural circulation between the hot water in the core and the cold water in the reflector inside the pressure vessel is established to cool down the core. Since the natural circulation processed only in the pressure vessel, the accident pumps need to be turned on periodically to remove reactor residual heat. The inversion of flow direction in HFETR and internal natural circulation lead to a different natural circulation establishment process from traditional reactor in which coolant flows form down to top normally. In this paper the transition between the natural circulation and forced circulation is analyzed by RELAP5/MOD3 code. The results showed that the accident pump could be turned off in the power of 850kW; The time, at which the accident pump needs to be turned on to transit the natural circulation to forced circulation, is decided by the temperature of the water in top of pressure vessel, and a formula between temperature of the water in the top of pressure vessel and the reactor power was obtained. The research results have theoretical and practical value to the full use of the natural circulation ability, as well as the safety of the engineering reactors or similar test facilities.

Abstract:
PSA is found to be a valuable tool for improving the safety and reliability of nuclear reactors due to intense involvement of human interactions in an experimental facility. It may also be advantageously applied to research reactors under design and construction. This paper demonstrates the study and result of a Level 1 internal initiating event PSA under the power operation mode to the High Flux Engineering Test Reactor (HFETR) which is under design and construction. The occurrence frequency of core damage which may potentially arise in HFETR is evaluated by using RiskSpectrum software, and event trees have been used to study the response of the installation to various initiating events whereas fault trees have been used in the modeling of safety system failures. Calculation results show that core damage frequency for HFETR research reactor is 5.28E−07 per year, and initiating events which have a significant contribution to CDF are loss of coolant water and loss of offsite power.

Abstract:
Transmutation of the nuclear waste which contains MA and FP is important and necessary. Because the major MA and FP’s nucleus densities is large in transmutation calculation, now existing multi-group WIMS libraries are not suitable for transmutation calculation. This paper makes a study for the parameters value choice such as weight spectrum and background cross-section σ0 in NJOY. With the new parameters value, produce suitable multi-group data of FP and a new library for transmutation calculation. In purpose of comparing these two libraries, build a simple transmutation cell model in HFETR. Achieve the cell calculation separately by WIMSD with new library and original library. Then compare the results of parameters such as K-INF, flux, and absorption reactions. The results show that the values of these parameters are different in resonance energy range, so it is necessary to think over the resonance of FP when a multi-group library is produced for thermal reactor transmutation.

Abstract:
Power Ramp test (PRT) of a fuel element is generally conducted with a PRT irradiation rig within a research reactor, in order to study the fuel’s behavior and validate its safety under power transient. Neutronics characteristics of a new PRT irradiation rig within a typical HFETR (High Flux Engineering Test Reactor) core and its components’ heat generation rates are calculated with MCNP code in this paper. The range of the test fuel rod power is obtained with a coupled Neutronic-Thermal-Hydraulic calculation method which combines MCNP and CFX code. The results show that changing the density of 3He gas can vary the test fuel rod power effectively, and the 3He gas layer influences the neutron field intensely by reducing the thermal neutron current into the layer and decreasing the neutron flux in and near the irradiation rig. The test fuel rod power varies from 5.80kW to 15.3kW while decreasing the 3He gas pressure from 4.5MPa to 0.13MPa, along with 0.231$ reactivity addition. Power of the fuel pellet in the test rod increases monotonically along with the 3He gas pressure reducing, and its calculation results have good agreement with the curve fitting by a natural logarithm function.

Abstract:
Abstract Reactor pressure vessel (RPV) operates under high temperatures and pressures and is exposed to relatively high neutron radiation. RPV is considered to be irreplaceable, which is the most limiting factor for the lifetime of a nuclear power plant. As the most severe ageing degradation mechanism in RPV materials, irradiation embrittlement is a major issue affecting the integrity through the service life of a RPV. Our previous paper (ASME PVP2019-93615[1]) introduced our project for assessment of irradiation embrittlement of the materials for the Chinese RPVs to verify the 60-year design life, in which the specimens made of the RPV base material manufactured in China, the SA-508 Gr.3 Cl.1 forging, and the different types of weld metals were irradiated in the high fluence engineering test reactor (HFETR). The paper analyzed extent irradiation damage of the forging in terms of mechanical properties. As another part of the project, this paper concentrates on the evaluation of the weld metals in the same project. Tensile tests, Charpy impact tests and fracture toughness tests by master curve approach were carried out for the three types of weld metals subjected to different irradiation fluences (2.6E19n/cm2, 8.9E19n/cm2). Comparison of the mechanical properties of the irradiated and the unirradiated materials is made. The irradiation resistance of the weld metals in our project is also compared with the data in the literatures.
