Abstract:
Despite much research on thinking biases such as the representativeness, availability, and anchoring heuristics, a psychometrically sound measurement instrument for assessing the degree of heuristic thinking is still missing. Therefore, it was the goal of this study to develop and validate a new test to assess the degree of heuristic thinking associated with three particular thinking heuristics (i.e., the representativeness, availability, and anchoring heuristics). The resulting Objective Heuristic Thinking Test (OHTT) was evaluated with regard to its internal consistency, factor structure, construct validity, and stability in an internet sample (N = 300) and an independent laboratory sample (N = 55). Exploratory factor analyses resulted in three latent factors that represented the three OHTT subscales (i.e., representativeness, availability, and anchoring factors). Results revealed a low to sufficient internal consistency for each of the three scales. Further analyses indicated convergent correlations of the OHTT scales with related constructs such as field-independency. Furthermore, good stability of the test scores was shown. Conclusions are drawn regarding possible future applications of the OHTT as a promising tool for studying the origins of heuristic thinking processes.

Abstract:
Background Outpatient providers often do not receive discharge summaries from acute care providers prior to follow-up visits. These outpatient providers may use the after-visit summaries (AVS) that are given to patients to obtain clinical information. It is unclear how effectively AVS support care coordination between clinicians. Objectives Goals for this effort include: (1) developing usability heuristics that may be applied both for assessment and to guide generation of medical documents in general, (2) conducting a heuristic evaluation to assess the use of AVS for communication between clinicians, and (3) providing recommendations for generating AVS that effectively support both patient/caregiver use and care coordination. Methods We created a 17-item heuristic evaluation instrument for assessing usability of medical documents. Eight experts used the instrument to assess each of four simulated AVS. The simulations were created using examples from two hospitals and two pediatric patient cases developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Results Experts identified 224 unique usability problems ranging in severity from mild to catastrophic. Content issues (e.g., missing medical history, marital status of a 2-year-old) were rated as most severe, but widespread formatting and structural problems (e.g., inconsistent indentation, fonts, and headings; confusing ordering of information) were so distracting that they significantly reduced readers' ability to efficiently use the documents. Overall, issues in the AVS from Hospital 2 were more severe than those in the AVS from Hospital 1. Conclusion The new instrument allowed for quick, inexpensive evaluations of AVS. Usability issues such as unnecessary information, poor organization, missing information, and inconsistent formatting make it hard for patients, caregivers, and clinicians to use the AVS. The heuristics in the new instrument may be used as guidance to adapt electronic health record systems so that they generate more useful and usable medical documents.

Abstract:
This research aims to unveil the types, size, figures, and functions of musical instruments carved as reliefs of Kalasan Temple as a way to revitalize the music from the 8th century. This research implements heuristic methods with Panofsky’s iconology analysis in three steps, which are pre-iconography, iconography, and iconology to analyse the reliefs of the Temple. The researchers validated the findings through forum group discussion with the Cultural Heritage Preservation Board of Yogyakarta. The findings show that (1) the relief of musical instruments in Kalasan temple is located on the head of Kala; (2) the musical instruments on the head are two wind instruments made of shells and a stringed instrument named vina; (3) there are two figures of musicians carved, which are two wind instruments players and a player of stringed instruments. The figures are depicted as heavenly creatures named Gandharva; (4) the measurement shows that the wind instruments have 35.98 cm length and 12.85 cm width, another one has 23.13 cm length and 12.85 cm width. Meanwhile, the stringed instrument has a length of 92.52 cm and 12.85 cm width; and (5) the musical instruments were performed to worship the Goddess of Tara.

Abstract:
Abstract Heuristic investigation, one of the lesser-known qualitative research methods in Brazil, is presented as a phenomenological research design in an empirical study investigating the experience of singing. This article describes the six phases of the heuristic method: initial engagement, immersion, incubation, illumination, explication, and creative synthesis. The method was developed by Clark Moustakas (1923-2012), an American clinical psychologist who, together with other renowned scholars such as Carl R. Rogers and Abraham H. Maslow, also contributed to the birth of Humanistic Psychology. The heuristic inquiry is a unique method in which the lived experience of the researcher becomes the main focus of the study, and it is used as an instrument in the process of understanding a given phenomenon. This method recognizes the importance of intuition and tacit knowledge as elements that enable comprehending a phenomenon and its meanings.

Abstract:
History shows that up to 1870’s, the thermodynamic cycles, particularly Carnot’s cycle, were the most important heuristic instruments as much to formulate the general laws of physics as well to deduce the experimental laws. From this moment on, this instrument falls into disuse with surprising rapidity. At the end of this decade emerges a new thermodynamic formulation, proposed by Gibbs, the thermodynamics of the potentials. This sudden transition from thermodynamic of cycles to potentials was triggered by the difficult to approach the emergence of the phase transition phenomena with the diagrammatic method. The main objective of the article is, then, to analyze the consequences of the substitution, by Gibbs, of the diagrammatic by the geometric method, particularly, its heuristic potential related to the proposal of the formulation of the thermodynamic of potentials.

Abstract:
In the past decade, the availability of digitally encoded, downloadable music has increased dramatically, pushed mainly by the release of the now famous MP3 compression format (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, 1994). Online sales of music in the US doubled in 2005, according to a recent news article (*), while the number of files exchanged on P2P platforms is much higher, but hard to estimate. The existing and coming informational flood in digital music prompts the need for sophisticated content-based information retrieval. Query-by-Humming is a prototypical technique aimed at locating pieces of music by melody; automatic annotation algorithms seek to enable finer search criteria, such as instruments, genre, or meter. Score transcription systems strive for an abstract, compressed form of a piece of music understandable by composers and musicians. Much research still has to be performed to achieve these goals. This thesis connects essential knowledge about music and human auditory perception with signal processing algorithms to solve the specific problem of pitch estimation. The designed algorithm obtains an estimate of the magnitude spectrum via STFT and models the harmonic structure of each pitch contained in the magnitude spectrum with Gaussian density mixtures, whose parameters are subsequently estimated via an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. Heuristics for EM initialization are formulated mathematically. The system is implemented in MATLAB, featuring a GUI that provides for visual (spectrogram) and numerical (console) verification of results. The algorithm is tested using an array of data ranging from single to triple superposed instrument recordings. Its advantages and limitations are discussed, and a brief outlook over potential future research is given. (*) "Online and Wireless Music Sales Tripled in 2005"; Associated Press; January 19, 2006

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop a list of usability guidelines, i.e. a usability checklist, which can assist in evaluating the usability of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) user interfaces. Interviews were conducted to help understand their context of use and to find design focus points for the evaluation of MOOCs interface. These design focus points were then inspected for usability issues with Jakob Nielsen’s usability inspection method - heuristic evaluation - using author’s own set of 10 usability heuristics. The study reveals two main findings. Firstly, the context of use of MOOCs differs from a regular university course in the manner of how users perceive and approach them. And secondly, the usability checklist has to be adaptable and up-to-date in order to support the constant change of context of use of MOOCs. The combination of both findings is what makes this study not just another checklist, but a valid contribution to the understanding of MOOCs and the research field in HCI.

Abstract:
Nowadays, usability mainly perceived as a basis of the instrumental evaluation of an information system (IS) capability. Notably, rule-of-thumb usability heuristic evaluation (HE) is widely known and used as a cost-efficient and effective inspection-based usability evaluation. However, it is evident in prior research that there is communicative action captured when users interact with a system. Accordingly, socio-instrumental (SI) perspective perceives a particular event of the user’s interaction toward system (social action) is composed of both instrumental aspect and social aspect. Our study aims to explain the completeness of recent HE studies, and also to describe underlying connections between inspection-based usability evaluation and socio-instrumental aspects. We conducted a qualitative systematic review throughout thirteen qualified documents we appraised from filtering out 89 documents which consist of research articles within the last five years and existing professional reports. In a qualitative manner, our study result has identified the qualified documents present a positive degree of completeness. We have also analyzed various usability problems that are connected with specific heuristics and SI aspects. It is evident in this study that the SI perspective has contributed to revealing the communicative rationale behind the user’s social action toward the system. In addition, we, therefore, suggest improvement suggestions for further works to address the shortcomings in the present study.

Abstract:
The identification of the melody from a music recording is a relatively easy task for humans, but very challenging for computational systems. This task is known as "audio melody extraction", more formally defined as the automatic estimation of the pitch sequence of the melody directly from the audio signal of a polyphonic music recording. This thesis investigates the benefits of exploiting knowledge automatically derived from data for audio melody extraction, by combining digital signal processing and machine learning methods. We extend the scope of melody extraction research by working with a varied dataset and multiple definitions of melody. We first present an overview of the state of the art, and perform an evaluation focused on a novel symphonic music dataset. We then propose melody extraction methods based on a source-filter model and pitch contour characterisation and evaluate them on a wide range of music genres. Finally, we explore novel timbre, tonal and spatial features for contour characterisation, and propose a method for estimating multiple melodic lines. The combination of supervised and unsupervised approaches leads to advancements on melody extraction and shows a promising path for future research and applications.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to analyze and interpret form of construction, providing and appropriation of senses and meanings of mediatic languages tools about presidential campaigns of 2007, 2012 and 2017 through the french newspapers. Firstly, we wanted to know how can linguistic, iconic and plastic tools of the first page of newspapers can be considered like technictools with the aim of the presidential choice during the period 2007 and 2012. Secondly, we wanted to find out how media language tools can contribute to be psychological and technic through the representations and appropriation of mediatic messages by students in Education Science during the presidential campaign 2017? On the one hand, we have planned to analyze, compare and interpret network relation between construction and providing of tools language used by the newspapers to present presidential campaigns during two historic periods. On the other hand, a complementary study has allowed us to analyse and interpret the representations and appropriation of mediatic messages by students in Education Science. On the theoretical aspect; we based our research on historical-cultural theory of Vygotski (1985), the concept of artefact (Rabardel, 1995), media education theories, concept of frame (Goffman, 1995), the network-actor theory (2007). On the methodological aspect, we have chosen a qualiquantitative method (with the softwares CHIC, Tropes, Iramuteq), a content (Bardin, 1993) anddiscourse (Maingueneau, 2014) analysis methods of language tools of first page of newspapers. We opted for a cross-cultural approach including statistical implicative analysis, a psychosocio-semio-linguistic, semiological and pragmatic approaches. The corpus have been made up of 239 newspapers editions, 293 pictures of the first coverture of french newspapers (20 Minutes, Métro, Lyon Plus, Le Figaro, Le Monde, et Le Progrès) and 15 interviews collected from students in Education Science. The results show that media language tools can be established as technical tools through the introduction of different mechanisms, natural and social frames of conceptualization, through a hightlighting types of discourse (stative, declarative, narrative and argumentative). Heuristics and pragmatics schemes are mainly requested in 2007 than epistemics schemes which have been reinforced in 2012. The analysis of tools made for the spread of formal and informal mediatic kwnowledges or news aboutpresidential campaigns show that the thought is built and it is developed depending on sociohistorical context with form of actualisation, novelty, and redundancy. The taking into account of social, symbolic, private, conscious, onconscious dimension is involved to the mediatic tools appropriation but also with the practices of students in the construction of their decisions. Theanalysis and the interpretation of the apropriation of mediatic messages by the students in Education Science demonstrate that the consultation and the appropriation of this fulfill more a cognitive, conative than behavioural needs

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to characterize website quality as a field of study, examine its evaluation methods and instruments – identifying their approaches and the factors they analyse – and formulate a model for the development of new comprehensive instruments. To do this, through a literature review, the field’s leading authors, their disciplines of origin and the sector of the websites studied were detected. Among the results, the recognition of three main approaches stands: strategic, functional and experiential. Also, that the technique of expert analysis predominates over user studies; and that most organize the characteristics to be evaluated – for example, usability and content – into parameters and indicators. Furthermore, based on the most cited works, two new website quality assessment instruments and a framework to create them are proposed, as part of a multipurpose model that also seeks to advance towards a shared terminological conceptualization.

Abstract:
The policy sciences tradition is a comprehensive transdisciplinary approach to develop insight into real-world decision-making, resolve problems, and improve policy outcomes. The policy sciences draw freely from the methods of many conventional disciplines, as well as offer a framework to integrate the insights from those disciplines into a more holistic understanding of any policy process. This unique approach to policy analysis uses a set of interdisciplinary frameworks and propositions as a heuristic device or “mental model” that provides a transdisciplinary instrument for integrating the insights of policy scholarship, social research, and practical experience across disciplines and substantive specialties. This facilitates the integration of knowledge and practice to improve problem solving and policy analysis by calling attention to the potentially relevant parts of any problem, decision process, or social context. This chapter reviews the history and development of the policy sciences and provides an overview of some key frameworks and propositions.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses typology. The importance of typologies is contested. Some scholars view them as fundamental to concept construction, while others consider that they are temporary devices at best and actually discourage their use. The chapter focuses on the less problematic, heuristic roles of typologies. In this respect, typologies are a proven and widely used instrument for organizing knowledge and ideas at various stages of research, and especially for jump starting the process of generating hypotheses. Moreover, theories are often presented, e.g. for didactic purposes, by means of typologies. Before turning to the uses of typologies, the chapter differentiates between typology, classification, and taxonomy.

Abstract:
This chapter deals with self-organization teaching technologies as the best instrument of generating, development and using of the innovative methods in education. As a process of spontaneous, dynamic motion of the components of a socio-system, self-organization can randomly generate new (often attractive) structures, processes, and situations. Self-organization of a student group can generate new techniques and ideas for learning and under the knowledge contents also increases students' motivation to learn, interest to the discipline, encourages teachers to professional self-development and to a deeper understanding of the subject matter and techniques. The section suggests several key ways to initiate the self-organization of a group of students or teachers: heuristic methods, interdisciplinary explication, educational heterosis, developing of managerial competencies of a teacher. Factors enhancing the use of self-organizational teaching technologies are disclosed.

Abstract:
This chapter proposes a theory of “purposive belief systems,” postulating an instrumental logic that tends to form an important foundation for citizens' policy preferences. This theory is based on the proposition that ordinary citizens are capable of—and tend to engage in—“rational,” instrumental, purposive reasoning about politics. Empirically, substantial evidence for the existence of such belief systems has already been found in the realm of foreign policy. This chapter illustrates and extends those findings, using recent data on the specific case of U.S.–China relations. It also explores the workings of policy preference heuristics that involve feelings toward foreign countries and investigates the ways in which such heuristics do or do not relate to purposive belief systems.

Abstract:
Because rationality is an issue across many disciplines, it has acquired many different definitions. This chapter describes definitions of rationality from cognitive science that are amenable to a program of measuring individual differences. Definitions of both epistemic and instrumental rationality are described in terms in terms of axiomatic utility theory and probability theory. It is argued that the wide range of tasks investigated in the heuristics and biases literature captures most aspects of epistemic and instrumental rationality.

Abstract:
Policy design—finding the right policy instrument for a given problem—is at the core of policy-making. This chapter not only argues that policy design includes the assessment of costs, benefits, and potentially unintended side-effects of different policy options, but also the consideration of the fit of a new policy to the social, institutional, and policy context to which it will be added. We maintain that policy-makers should critically review whether the programme theory of a particular policy instrument is valid in a given context. The chapter develops a set of guiding questions that policy-makers can use for assessing the fit of a policy instrument to the relevant context. But smart policy design also considers the task’s political aspect, and the chapter points at four ways in which policy choices may affect policy processes in the future and the position of a policy-making organization therein. Again, these four mechanisms can serve as heuristics for policy-makers to take into account when designing policies.

Abstract:
This chapter contains a critical analysis of people's faith in experts. It presents many biases that influence and distort people's perception of the reputation of others. It also examines the heuristics that influence people's perceptions and lead them to classify accurately or inaccurately a person or object within a social network. Reputation can never be taken for granted and always creates uncertainty and anxiety. This is because social position is always precarious and can never be objectively determined. The chapter also distinguishes the “good” from the “bad” uses of reputation in order to develop a proper epistemology of reputation. The objective is to identify a set of normative and descriptive instruments that can be used to classify the heuristics and establish some sort of criteria, along the lines of the classical epistemological tradition in order to distinguish between the rules of inference that place too much or too little trust in the reputations of others.

Abstract:
Within the contemporary global world, there appears to be an inevitable lag between the changing factual reality and the concepts and categories scholars use to analyze it, i.e., “indigenous peoples,” “traditional oral expressions,” “ethnicity,” “cultural identity,” and “cultural heritage.” But are these discrepancies insurmountable? This article delves into such mismatches, examining the relentless search for heuristic instruments to deal with the diverse indigenous artistic expressions in their socio-historical and political contexts. It presents some thoughts about the methodological frameworks used to ponder indigenous cultural expressions. The main argument is based on ethnographic research among Zoque and Mayan peoples in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas in Southern Mexico, while establishing a dialog with ethnographies by other authors on different indigenous regions.

Reese, Baxter. "Instrument Adjustment Policies." In NCSL International Workshop & Symposium. NCSL International, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.51843/wsproceedings.2015.09.

Full text
Abstract:
Instrument adjustment policies play a key role in the reliability of calibrated instruments to maintain their accuracy over a specified time interval. Periodic review and adjustment of assigned calibration intervals is required by national standard ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 and is employed to manage the End of Period Reliability (EOPR) to acceptable levels. Instrument adjustment policies may also be implemented with various guardband strategies to manage false accept risk. However, policies and guidance addressing the routine adjustment of in-tolerance instruments are not so well established. National and international calibration standards ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 and ISO/IEC-17025 do not mandate any particular adjustment policy with regard to in-tolerance equipment. Evidence has been previously presented where routine adjustment of in-tolerance items may even degrade performance. Yet, this important part of the overall calibration process is often left to the discretion of the calibrating technician based on heuristic assessment. Astute adjustment decisions require knowledge of the random vs. systematic nature of instrument error. Instruments dominated by systematic effects, such as drift, benefit from adjustment, while those displaying more random behavior may not. Monte Carlo methods are used here to investigate the effect of various adjustment thresholds on in-tolerance instruments.

In 7th International Congress on Scientific Knowledge. Perspectivas Online: Humanas e Sociais Aplicadas, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.25242/8876113220212426.

Abstract:
This research aims to investigate whether the financial decision-making process of elderly people in the acquisition of payroll loans is influenced by the anchoring heuristic. In the Anchorage heuristic, individuals focus their attention on recently received information and use it as a reference to make a decision, or itcan also be the result of a partial or incomplete analysis of the received information, which often happens with elderly people. As the financial decision-making process is somewhat complex, the use of mental shortcuts (Heuristics) to facilitate decisionscould lead to catastrophic long-term indebtedness situations, especially in elderly people in a situation of gradual decline in physical and psychological health. This is a qualitative, quantitative, exploratory, descriptive and survey research, the data collection instrument used refers to the adaptation of a questionnaire that aims to seek answers for possible effects and/or relationships between anchoring and financial decision making, using as a measurement and analysis parameter the method proposed byJacowitz & Kahneman (1995). Expected with this research to measure the impact of the anchoring heuristic in the financial decision-making process of elderly citizens, retirees and/or INSS beneficiaries in the acquisition of payroll-deductible loans. In this way, if the bias hypothesis is confirmed, strategies to support financial education may be implemented as an initiative to minimize the heuristic effects, culminating in a better quality of life for the elderly class, with effects on the general population.

Abstract:
After half a century of intense urbanization, municipal boundaries -those generally associated with local scale- show explicit contradiction regarding current territorial dynamics. New urban patterns are more related to the concept of 'urban area' and the ambiguous and fluctuating sub-regional scale. Thus, the need to jointly address local and regional phenomena challenges conventional planning systems and the subsidiarity of historical administrative structures. The aim of this paper is to evidence the innovation and specificity of recent urban areas’ management. In particular, we explore the heuristic nature of intermediate planning instruments, focusing on how they re-define the territorial scale of ‘the local’ and ‘the regional’, and implicitly the idea of the city and its governance. To this end, we rely on a multiple case study of three recent plurimunicipal plans, implemented in an ad-hoc manner, and referred to different European cultural models. We argue that intermediate design and governance instruments allow rearranging a meaningful scale for “the local”, overcoming tacit and static levels of planning systems.

Abstract:
Digital diagrams are constituted as strategic-communicative-productive intermediate space-matrices among architecture, the architect and the digital machine, and between architecture and other disciplinary fields. According to Stan Allen, diagrams are a map of the possible worlds, a description of potential relationships, where a plethora of functions, actions and configurations are implicit in time, subject to continuous modifications.Alluding to the notions of diagrams, machinic and figural of Deleuze and Guattari, Eisenman’s conceptual-generative diagram functions as a hypertext and a creative and affective interface between intention, randomness and imagination, and architectural space and form. Proposing a new type of reality in a permanent state of evolution and of form-thinking and form-making, they have become a technique or poetic operation that, in addition to representing, also present and evoke, in between order and chaos, intention and the unexpected, mechanical and organic, real and virtual, presence and absence. For Eisenman, diagrams function as a heuristic instrument of criticism in the design process, in search of other spatial and conceptual qualities for a reflection within the discipline of architecture itself. Diagrams are a space-matrix, or as Eisenman puts it, a “meta-writing” in terms of the field of orientations and possibilities to be apprehended and inscribed, first in the project and later in the construction of the architectural place. These possibilities and orientations, guidelines or meanings are not totally contained within the diagram itself, rather they also reside in the intermediate space between the diagram and the observer, creator or architect. Diagrams are an evocative and inspiring space-formal matrix, the contents or evocations of which are not found “embedded” or “enclosed” in their shape or material, rather they are indicated or outlined, in varying degrees of explicitness, as signals or traces, evoking multiple interpretations and reflections. Eisenman uses digital diagrams as a mediating agent or instrument to investigate, explore, create and draw the architectural space within the thematic basis of the interstitial–“the “in-between”. He does so through a process that is intentional, random, interpretive, esthetic and poetic, all at the same time. In contrast to the traditional quest for form that is synthesized in the idea of a box or container, Eisenman proposes an alternative means, through which form or space can be found through a long process in which rational approaches and computerized drawing intermingle, introducing formal randomness, in which the diagram is the mediator. Eisenman refers to that procedure as “spacing”, ”espacement” or ”espaciamiento”, in opposition to “forming”.Eisenman’s conceptual-generative diagram constructs and develops a matrix field of forces and geometries that, acting in the project as a spatial-formal guide, opens up from the first record or first intention, to many possibilities of configuration/definition of the object or architectural place. Consequently, it makes possible the exploration and discovery in architecture of other ways of thinking, imagining and manifesting forms and spaces, that investigate new ways of occupancy and promote other possible ways of life. It is an architecture in which diagrams are constituted as an expression of the figural/imprecise/blurred condition, the traces of which persist in the space-form of the building; a diagram that is both a creative interface between the intrinsic exploration of its defined concepts and the final configured complexity of its spatialities and functional superpositions.

The analysis of the dynamics of spherical objects transported through a cartridge by the brush is applied to isotropic and anisotropic belt designs.
