Abstract:
Investment in fixed assets declined over the crisis period in all countries. We implement an econometric analysis to explore the differential impact of leverage and debt maturity structure on investment, finding that in crisis years (i) leverage exerts a strong and negative effect on investment, and (ii) firms with more long-term debt invest less. We uncover heterogeneous reactions to the crisis due to the level of debt and its maturity, sorting firms by country-specific and firm-specific characteristics. Firms which cut back most investment in crisis years (conditional on the level of leverage and maturity) are (i) small and (ii) located in Eurozone periphery countries. Factors that alleviate financial friction and shield investment include multiple bank relationships and the ability to generate internal resources (cash flow). We find no evidence of a positive nexus between cash and investment, and little evidence of a positive effect on investment of access to capital markets.

Abstract:
It is difficult to understand the form, management, markets, and ultimately the services produced by PSFs without analysis of the characteristics of knowledge and learning in such organizations. This chapter highlights how three fundamental lines of research about PSFs are intimately related to the key characteristics of knowledge and learning in such organizations: (a) organizational form, management, and governance, (b) the roles and effects of knowledge networking via databases versus knowing in practice through communities, and (c) the jurisdiction of a firm and claims about exclusive rights over a market. These areas of research are all contested domains in terms of optimum modes of organizing and trajectories of change due to the ambiguous and heterogeneous nature of knowledge. The chapter frames key future research questions which relate primarily to the constant dynamics that define both the nature of knowledge in PSFs, and their influence on questions of organization and management.

Finney, Mark, Sara McAllister, Torben Grumstrup, and Jason Forthofer. Wildland Fire Behaviour. CSIRO Publishing, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486309092.

Full text
Abstract:
Wildland fires have an irreplaceable role in sustaining many of our forests, shrublands and grasslands. They can be used as controlled burns or occur as free-burning wildfires, and can sometimes be dangerous and destructive to fauna, human communities and natural resources. Through scientific understanding of their behaviour, we can develop the tools to reliably use and manage fires across landscapes in ways that are compatible with the constraints of modern society while benefiting the ecosystems. The science of wildland fire is incomplete, however. Even the simplest fire behaviours – how fast they spread, how long they burn and how large they get – arise from a dynamical system of physical processes interacting in unexplored ways with heterogeneous biological, ecological and meteorological factors across many scales of time and space. The physics of heat transfer, combustion and ignition, for example, operate in all fires at millimetre and millisecond scales but wildfires can become conflagrations that burn for months and exceed millions of hectares. Wildland Fire Behaviour: Dynamics, Principles and Processes examines what is known and unknown about wildfire behaviours. The authors introduce fire as a dynamical system along with traditional steady-state concepts. They then break down the system into its primary physical components, describe how they depend upon environmental factors, and explore system dynamics by constructing and exercising a nonlinear model. The limits of modelling and knowledge are discussed throughout but emphasised by review of large fire behaviours. Advancing knowledge of fire behaviours will require a multidisciplinary approach and rely on quality measurements from experimental research, as covered in the final chapters.

Full text
Abstract:
Miscellaneous physical therapies, such as assistive devices, thermotherapy, manual therapy, and electrotherapy are commonly used to treat patients with osteoarthritis (OA) in addition to written information and exercise. However, the evidence underpinning specific miscellaneous physical therapies is often limited, with small study sizes, heterogeneous populations, and differing study designs making it difficult to draw firm conclusions about their effectiveness. One or more miscellaneous physical therapies feature within 15 current clinical guidelines for OA. The specific types of physical therapies addressed are variable, as are their recommendations. There is most agreement for miscellaneous physical therapies in hand OA, with multiple guidelines addressing and consistently recommending joint protection, splinting, and thermotherapy in addition to core treatment. However these recommendations are predominantly based on a small number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Use of walking aids and footwear is commonly addressed and recommended for patients with hip and knee OA, although recommendations are predominantly based on expert opinion. Other physical therapies recommended for hip and knee OA range from orthoses to less conventional leech therapy. When a recommendation for a miscellaneous physical therapy is not made, it is commonly due to limited clinical evidence, rather than evidence of harm. Due to limited evidence and lack of consensus between clinical guidelines, for some therapies, use of specific miscellaneous physical therapies in clinical practice should be based upon the best available evidence, a holistic, individualized clinical assessment and shared decision-making with the patient. Further large-scale, high-quality RCTs would be useful to inform future guideline recommendations and clinical practice.

Abstract:
Approach to Dynamic Analysis in Industrial Organization This chapter offers a basic agent-based computational model of industry dynamics that allows us to study the evolving industry structure through entry and exit of heterogeneous firms. The field of modern industrial economics focuses on the structure and performance of the industry in equilibrium when firms make decisions in an optimizing way, typically with perfect foresight. The patterns that arise in the process of adjustment, induced by persistent external shocks, are often ignored for lack of a proper tool for analysis. The model introduced here induces turbulence in market structure through unpredictable shocks to the firms' technological environment. The base model presented here enables the analysis of interactive dynamics between firms as they compete in a changing environment with limited rationality and foresight. A possible extension of the base model, allowing for R&D by firms, is also discussed.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the evolution of India’s industrial structure. Unlike industrialization carried out through large state-owned firms, or industrialization through a cadre of large private corporations, or industrialization through a network of small firms, many alternative organizational dynamics play simultaneously in the Indian system. The system consists of many private businesses that constitute the large-scale industrial sector. Policies were put in place to develop the molecular economy and to develop State-owned firms investing in large-scale units. These policies led to the emergence of important and dynamic segments making up India’s heterogeneous model of capitalism. Each has been in coexistence with the other and added variety to the economy. In the quest for economic progress, if Indian society was to be industrialized, modernized, autonomous, self-reliant, able to defend itself, and an independent center of economic power, State-directed industrialization was realized as a key solution for national development.

Avila, Jacqueline. Cinesonidos. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190671303.001.0001.

Abstract:
Cinesonidos: Film Music and National Identity During Mexico’s Época de Oro is the first book-length study concerning the function of music in the prominent genres structured by the Mexican film industry. Integrating primary source material with film music studies, sound studies, and Mexican film and cultural history, this project closely examines examples from five significant film genres that developed during the 1930s through 1950s. These genres include the prostitute melodrama, the fictional indigenista film (films on indigenous themes or topics), the cine de añoranza porfiriana (films of Porfirian nostalgia), the revolutionary melodrama, and the comedia ranchera (ranch comedy). The musics in these films helped create and accentuate the tropes and archetypes considered central to Mexican cultural nationalism. Distinct in narrative and structure, each genre exploits specific, at times contradictory, aspects of Mexicanidad—the cultural identity of the Mexican people—and, as such, employs different musics to concretize those constructions. Throughout this turbulent period, these tropes and archetypes mirrored changing perceptions of Mexicanidad manufactured by the state and popular and transnational culture. Several social and political agencies were heavily invested in creating a unified national identity to merge the previously fragmented populace owing to the Mexican Revolution (1910–ca.1920). The commercial medium of film became an important tool in acquainting a diverse urban audience with the nuances of national identity, and music played an essential and persuasive role in the process. In this heterogeneous environment, cinema and its music continuously reshaped the contested, fluctuating space of Mexican identity.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews recent applications of computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling in the analysis and evaluation of policies that affect interactions among multiple markets. At the core of this research is a particular approach to the data and structural representations of the economy, elaborated through the device of a canonical static multiregional model. This template is adapted and extended to shed light on the structural and methodological foundations of simulating dynamic economies, incorporating “bottom-up” representations of discrete production activities, and modeling contemporary theories of international trade with monopolistic competition and heterogeneous firms. These techniques are motivated by policy applications including trade liberalization, development, energy policy and greenhouse gas mitigation, the impacts of climate change and natural disasters, and economic integration and liberalization of trade in services.
