Full textThis thesis demonstrate the relevance of Powerline Communication (PLC) usage for sensor networks applications. We focus in particular on the low power and low data rate PLC technol- ogy "Watt Pulse Communication" (WPC) developed by the Watteco company and justify its usage for sensor network applications. We situate the WPC technology in the PLC landscape and define compatible protocols. We then describe the WPC module and the PLC media im- plementation in the COOJA network simulator. This allows us to propose a network solution over this technology, leveraging on the adaptation of the 802.15.4 standard over the WPC tech- nology. We then demonstrate the benefit of media convergence at the network layer level, with the use of the IPv6 standard that we adapted over our PLC solution thanks to the 6LoWPAN protocol. We justify the usage of standards protocols over our PLC solution and show that a routing solutions must be developed over WPC. We show through experiments that our PLC solution match low power and lossy network (LLNs) criterions for which the RPL standard pro- tocol has been designed. We justify the usage of this routing protocol over our PLC solution, and validate its implementation through 2 experiments conducted in tertiary types buildings. Respectively composed of 7 and 26 PLC nodes, results show that the routing topology created by RPL enable the coverage an entire floor of a tertiary building with a tree based topology and 3 hops maximum path length. We also show that the WPC technology exhibits a high connectivity between nodes and that the link quality is highly dynamic. Though, we observed that the routing topology was able to handle these variations. We point out the limitations of our PLC solution, which presents high delays and low throughput, creating high constraints on applications. Our sensor network solution over PLC relies on the IP standard, enabling packets exchanges with other technologies using the same protocol. In particular, we study the possi- bility to create heterogeneous networks mixing the WPC technology with 802.15.4 radio. We show that our protocol stack used over PLC enable to create this type of network, in order to benefit from the best of these 2 worlds. We purpose an architecture of a hybrid Radio / PLC node enabling to transfer packets between these 2 media. Then, we show that the combined usage of these 2 media increase the number of available paths and facilitate the routing, while diminishing the number of hops and possible unreachability of nodes. We then demonstrate that the addition of PLC and Radio/PLC nodes in a RF based battery powered sensor network enable to relieve their routing charge in order to expand their lifetime. We then continue the energy study with a power consumption optimization of a wireless sensor network platform from the hardware and software standpoint. We first determine the operating frequency, the wake up frequency and the mode of operation of the micro controller offering the lowest power consump- tion. We then conduct an energy study of 4 different radio transceivers using the 2.4 GHz and 868 MHz frequency band, in order to determine the most efficient architecture. We determine the protocols parameters and the software optimization to reach the lower power consumption of this architecture. Finally, we realize the energy study of several probes than can be embedded on the node, according to their nature and functioning mode. Our final architecture exhibits a total power consumption that is lower than 17 μW, with an applicative reporting each 10 minutes and the maintenance of the reachability with the network. We also mention in annex parts our implication in standards developments organizations such as the IETF a the IPSO alliance, that allow us to validate the implementation of our solution through interoperability events

Full textImproving the network lifetime is a very challenging problem that needs to be taken into account during the deployment of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Indeed, these networks are composed of many autonomous sensors with a limited energy supply provided by batteries which are usually difficult to recharge or replace. The scientific challenge is to ensure the operation of these networks for several years without major external intervention. To maximize the lifetime of WSNs, we first explored the possibility of introducing multiple mobile sinks. We proposed two mobility strategies. The first one provides the optimal placement in a network of small scale. The second one is based on an heuristic algorithm that ensures scalability.We were then interested in IPv6 based WSNs which use the new proposed routing protocol by IETF namely RPL. We studied this protocol, extended its capacity to manage mobile sinks andproposed an appropriate sinks mobility strategy that extends the network lifetime.Next, we proposed a novel approach which consists in applying Slepian-Wolf coding to emitted addresses in WSNs. The basic idea is to exploit the addresses correlation, guaranteed by an appropriate addresses allocation scheme, in order to reduce the header size of packets transmitted to the sink and thus improve the network lifetime.Finally, we proposed an hybrid IPv6 infrastructure for smart buildings which combines the wireless and power line technologies to guarantee energy efficiency and a longer network lifetime

Full textToday the Internet makes it possible to connect billions of heterogeneous electronic devices and ensures communication between them. These devices have sensors designed with resource constraints that significantly affect data collection, especially memory and battery size limitations. The divergences in the characteristics of these objects require new intelligent methods to ensure communication between them. Heuristic solutions become obsolete or powerless to satisfy the user's requirement, hence a search for new methods becomes necessarily necessary to satisfy users. Among these solutions, we have those based on bio-inspired models. In this context, intending to minimize data loss, we propose different bio-inspired approaches for the mobility of the data collector and the choice of meeting points for data collection.First of all, we propose mobility inspired by the movement of Escherichia Coli bacteria. Then, we propose a technique inspired by the grouping of grey wolves and whales for the choice of meeting points. Afterward, we improve the mobility of the collector by mobility inspired by salps.Finally, we combine these approaches by taking into account the urgency of the data. The different contributions were evaluated using simulations and then were compared with similar existing work.The results obtained are very promising in terms of energy consumption and the amount of data collected

Full textIn this thesis, we present energy-efficient data reduction and security techniques dedicated for wireless sensor networks. First, we propose a data aggregation model based on the similarity function that helps in removing the redundant data. In addition, based on the fitting functions we worked on sending less data features, accompanied with the fitting function that expresses all features. Second, we focus on heterogeneity of the data while studying the correlation among these multivariate features in order to enhance the data prediction technique that is based on the polynomial function, all after removing the similar measures in the aggregation phase using the Euclidean distance. Finally, we provide a rigorous security framework inherited from cryptography satisfies the level of exigence usually attained in tree-based WSNs. It prevents attackers from gaining any information about sensed data, by ensuring an end-to-end privacy between sensor nodes and the sink. In order to validate our proposed techniques, we implemented the simulations of the first technique on real readings collected from a small Sensor Scope network which is deployed at the Grand-St-Bernard, while the simulations of the second and the third techniques are conducted on real data collected from 54 sensors deployed in the Intel Berkeley Research Lab. The performance of our techniques is evaluated according to data reduction rate, energy consumption, data accuracy and time complexity

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to assess the potential of the remote sensing data to monitor the seasonal dynamic of the forest vegetation (understory and tree canopy). The study has been carried out on the maritime pine forest in the Southwest of France. It is based on a 7-year time-series of the 10-day vegetation index PVI composite derived from satellite and on in situ leaf area measurements (LAI) of understory and tree story.At first, the in situ observations have been analysed. It shows that the understory vegetation is the main driver of the seasonal dynamic of the whole forest LAI (understory+tree story). Then, these informations have been compared with the time-series of remote sensed PVI . It appears that the spring phenology of the PVI informs directly about the LAI understory one.Finally, these results have been used at the regional scale and a regional map of the lande types has been produced. This study opens some new prospects about integration and spatialisation of water and carbon balance of forest ecosystems at regional scale

Full textIneffective mixing entailing heterogeneity issues within industrial bioreactors have been reported to affect microbial metabolisms at cellular and/or molecular levels. Substrate gradients inside large-scale bioreactors are common environmental fluctuations that microorganisms would have to encouter along with the bioprocess. Depending on intensity, frequency and duration of those fluctuations, microorganisms may respond in a different manner. The objective of this work is to study the impact of intensity, frequency and amplitude of glucose perturbations on the dynamics of Escherichia coli responses. An E. coli bioluminescent strain is used for in situ and real-time monitoring of both metabolic and transcriptional changes. For this purpose, short-term glucose excess was simulated, using pulse-based experiments into glucose-limited chemostat cultures. In addition, an important effort is devoted to the development and validation of technical and mathematical tools in order to acquire quantitative and kinetic data on time scales from seconds to minutes. The transient responses are characterized, using specific rates, yields, transcriptional induction profiles and characteristic response times, and are compared in the different defined perturbation scenarios. The results reflected the fact that short-term heterogeneities of substrate affect both cell metabolism and regulation at macroscopic and/or molecular levels. Quantitative understandings of the dynamics during transient responses to environmental perturbations can thus shed light on the bioprocess optimization
