Abstract:
Abstract The transportation function is critical to efficient and effective logistical operations. In order to improve transportation performance, it may be necessary for firms to form closer relationships with their carriers. Unfortunately, there are few studies examining the nuances and outcomes of shipper-carrier relationships. The focus of this work is to delineate the levels of relational closeness found between shippers and carriers and to assess the effects of relational closeness on carrier performance. Based on data and expertise provided by The Hershey Company, a major U.S. confectionary corporation, this research utilizes qualitative and quantitative techniques to accomplish these tasks. Findings indicate that closer relationships between shippers and carriers have no effect on carriers' on-time performance but significantly influence carriers' willingness to commit assets to the shipper and accept loads during times of constrained transportation capacity.

AbstractUnderstanding the evolution of galaxies from the starforming blue cloud to the quiescent red sequence has been revolutionized by observations taken with Herschel Space Observatory, and the onset of the era of sensitive millimeter interferometers, allowing astronomers to probe both cold dust as well as the cool interstellar medium in a large set of galaxies with unprecedented sensitivity. Recent Herschel observations of of H2-bright Hickson Compact Groups of galaxies (HCGs) has shown that [C ii] may be boosted in diffuse shocked gas. CARMA CO(1–0) observations of these [C ii]-bright HCGs has shown that these turbulent systems also can show suppression of SF. Here we present preliminary results from observations of HCGs with Herschel and CARMA, and their [C ii] and CO(1–0) properties to discuss how shocks influence galaxy transitions and star formation.

Hoyos, Jan Michel Sanchez. "A methodology for the enhancement and reuse of company towns. The case of Hershey in Santa Cruz del Norte, Cuba." Master's thesis, Universidade de Évora, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10174/23733.

Full text
Abstract:
This work focuses on the enhancement and reuse of company towns through the study of the Hershey Sugar Company Town in Santa Cruz del Norte, Cuba. The thesis responds to the current need to rescue and protect the abandoned and deteriorated heritage of the sugar industry in Cuba. After the economic restructuring of the sugar sector carried out in 2002, many sugar mills were abandoned or demolished and the cultural consequences were devastating. Each sugar mill is attached to a human settlement in a codependent and indissoluble unit. Following the abandonment and demolition of the sugar factories, the surrounding local population has faced the severe consequences of social, economic and urban dysfunctionality. The productive, urban, and socio-economic configuration of these sugar settlements responds to archetypal models of company towns. In Cuba, this phenomenon is mainly linked to the American capital that invaded the country in the first half of the 20th century. In order to achieve a proposal that solves the problems of the Hershey Sugar Company Town, a research on the specific characteristics of such productive settlements was carried out. The study of three examples of Italian company towns allowed the identification of good practices for revalorization processes.

Abstract:
Abstract It is nowadays well accepted that the steady state rheological behavior of drilling fluids must be modelled by at least three parameters. One of the most often used models is the yield power law, also referred as the Herschel-Bulkley model. Other models have been proposed like the one from Robertson-Stiff, while other industries have used other three-parameter models such as the one from Heinz-Casson. Some studies have been made to compare the degree of agreement between different rheological models and rheometer measurements but in most cases, already published works have only used mechanical rheometers that have a limited number of speeds and precision. For this paper, we have taken measurements with a scientific rheometer in well-controlled conditions of temperature and evaporation, and for relevant shear rates that are representative to normally encountered drilling operation conditions. Care has been made to minimize the effect of thixotropy on measurements, as the shear stress response of drilling fluids depends on its shear history. Measurements have been made at different temperatures, for various drilling fluid systems (both water and oil-based), and with variable levels of solid contents. Also, the shear rate reported by the rheometer itself, is corrected to account for the fact that the rheometer estimates the wall shear rate on the assumption that the tested fluid is Newtonian. A measure of proximity between the measurements and a rheological model is defined, thereby allowing the ranking of different rheological behavior model candidates. Based on the 469 rheograms of various drilling fluids that have been analyzed, it appears that the Heinz-Casson model describes most accurately the rheological behavior of the fluid samples, followed by the model of Carreau, Herschel-Bulkley and Robertson-Stiff, in decreasing order of fidelity.

Abstract:
Abstract Properly designed drilling fluid is a key element in achieving safe and effective drilling operations. Rheological parameters of drilling fluid determine the equivalent circulation density, the pump pressure, and hole cleaning efficiency. Also, they have a significant role in predicting the stability of drilling fluid under static and low shear rates. The chemical composition of the drilling fluid controls the rheological parameters. Recently, studies have shown that a small concentration of nanosized materials in the drilling fluid can substantially impact the rheological parameters of the drilling fluids. In this study, various nanoparticles (NPs) with different shapes, sizes, and surface charges were used to investigate their impact on the viscous properties of water-based drilling fluid. Bentonite and KCl water-based drilling fluids were used as the base fluids. NPs such as Iron oxide, Silica (SiO2), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were added to these base fluids. Also, surface functionalization of the NPs with polymer and functional groups such as -OH and -COOH groups was done to compare the effect of bare NPs with surface functionalized NPs. Hershel-Buckley model with dimensionless shear rates was used to calculate the low and high shear curvature exponents, surplus stress, and yield stress of the samples. Results indicate that NPs alter drilling fluid’s viscous properties based on their sizes, shapes, and surface charges. Moreover, the functionalization of NPs also modifies the properties based on the functional group attached to the NPs surface. This work shows that changing the size, shape, and surface charge of NPs has impact on viscous parameters, and NPs with different properties can fine-tune the fluid’s viscous properties based on the requirement for drilling fluid.

Abstract:
Abstract Loss of circulation is a major problem that often causes interruption to drilling operations, and reduction in efficiency. This problem often occurs when the drilled wellbore encounters a high permeable formation such as faults or fractures, leading to total or partial leakage of the drilling fluids. In this work, we present a novel semi-analytical solution and type-curves that offer a quick and accurate diagnostic tool to assess the lost-circulation of Herschel-Bulkley fluids in fractured media. Based on the pressure and mud loss trends, the tool can estimate the effective fracture conductivity, the cumulative mud-loss volume, and the leakage period. The behavior of lost-circulation into fractured formation can be assessed using analytical methods that can be deployed to perform flow diagnostics, such as the rate of fluid leakage and the associated fracture hydraulic properties. In this study, we develop a new semi-analytical method to quantify the leakage of drilling fluid flow into fractures. The developed model is applicable for non-Newtonian fluids with exhibiting yield-power-law, including shear thickening and thinning, and Bingham plastic fluids. We propose new dimensionless groups and generate novel dual type-curves, which circumvent the non-uniqueness issues in trend matching of type-curves. We use numerical simulations based on finite-elements to verify the accuracy of the proposed solution, and compare it with existing analytical solutions from the literature. Based on the proposed semi-analytical solution, we propose new dimensionless groups and generate type-curves to describe the dimensionless mud-loss volume versus the dimensionless time. To address the non-uniqueness matching issue, we propose, for the first time, complimentary derivative-based type-curves. Both type-curve sets are used in a dual trend matching, which significantly reduced the non-uniqueness issue that is typically encountered in type-curves. We use data for lost circulation from a field case to show the applicability of the proposed method. We apply the semi-analytical solver, combined with Monte-Carlo simulations, to perform a sensitivity study to assess the uncertainty of various fluid and subsurface parameters, including the hydraulic property of the fracture and the probabilistic prediction of the rate of mud leakage into the formation. The proposed approach is based on a novel semi-analytical solution and type-curves to model the flow behavior of Herschel-Bulkley fluids into fractured reservoirs, which can be used as a quick diagnostic tool to evaluate lost-circulation in drilling operations.
