Abstract:
Names such as Goethe, Hesse and literary writers alike are, to the reading public, synonymous for German literature. It is discouraging to see how German heroic epics have not achieved world wide acclaim and popularization, yet their quality precedes that of many bestsellers. Many experts even consider the Nibelungenlied the German equivalent of Homer's Iliad. In this work we will discuss the most significant characteristics of heroic epic by analysing, what we might consider two of the most popular heroic epics in German literature, the Nibelungenlied and the Gudrunlied. These medieval epics are subjects of much scholarly research around the world. For a better understanding of the topic, we will at the very beginning discuss the concepts of epic and heroic prose, their major characteristics as well as their significance in German literature. As the term hero certainly holds a key position in this literary genre we are obligated to hindsight it, and talk through the heroes of the Nibelungenlied and the Gudrunlied. Furthermore, for a better comprehension of the topic it is inevitable to take a closer look at the historical context of these two epics. At the very end we will review their similarities and differences.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to draw from data collected as part of the International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP) and present cases of democratic and heroic leadership from three countries, discussing to what extent successful school principals in each of their research sites (Melbourne, Australia; Umeå, Sweden; Arizona and Texas in the USA) carry old and new perspectives of heroism in their leadership. In particular the paper explores two questions: first, how do school principals describe aspects of heroic and post-heroic leadership in their practices? and second, how do these heroic and post-heroic leadership practices meet contemporary demands such as accountability standards and build inclusive and collaborative school communities in challenging contexts? Design/methodology/approach – Multiple-perspective case studies involving semi-structured individual and group interviews with principals, teachers, students, parents and school board members were used to understand the contribution of principals and other leadership to school success. Findings – The definitions of heroic and post-heroic leadership are inadequate in defining successful principal leadership. The Australian, Swedish and American principals showed characteristics of both heroic and post-heroic leadership. They showed heroic qualities such as: inspiring and motivating others; challenging the status quo; showing integrity in conflicting situations; putting duty before self; taking risks to champion a better way; showing courage to stand up to those in authority; advocating for students in struggling neighbourhoods under the scrutiny of both district and public expectations; and, showing uncommon commitment. Yet our principals showed post-heroic leadership such as involving others in decision making and recognising that school success depended on collective effort, and being sensitive to community needs through a deep respect for the local culture. Originality/value – The research shows that we may need to redefine and recast our images of who school principals are today, and what they do to generate academic success for students. Both heroic and post-heroic images of leadership are needed to explain successful school leadership.

Abstract:
Compared to other genres of the epic, in the heroic epic we see one of the most perfect images of the horse, which has reached a high artistic level. This is due to the fact that in the archaic epic the predominance of fantastic elements, mythical motives, the consciousness of an immature child prevents him from creating a full-fledged image of a horse, the main theme of the lyric epic. which prevented the formation On the other hand, historical poetry is usually smaller in size than epic, which does not allow portraying tulpar in a variety of forms. Therefore, we can say that the image of the horse in the Kazakh epic, which is depicted in the most comprehensive, deep and diverse character, is formed mainly in the heroic epic. This was due to the fact that tulpar are usually portrayed with heroism, courage, battles with the enemy. In this regard, the article discusses the main features of the image of a horse in the epic.

Abstract:
Building on research about the characteristics and varieties of actual heroes, the purpose of this project was to investigate the extent to which different types of real heroes have similar and distinct characteristics using Q-method, a person focused method. Awarded heroes sorted 49 psychological characteristics and Q-factor analysis revealed two profiles, or groups, of heroes; “open, loving, and risk-taking heroes,” and “spiritual, socially responsible, and prudent heroes.” These findings are interpreted in light of humanistic psychology, and the implications of these findings on the field of heroism science are discussed. The profiles bring the field of heroism science a deeper and more comprehensive view of the whole heroic person, and suggest directions for using heroic examples to fostering heroism.

Abstract:
In the course of this dissertation, I will interrogate traditional representations of the heroic figure within the fantasy genre. I will argue that the tropes established by some of the most renowned fantasy texts are undergoing a process of evolution and that Steven Erikson (who is the special focus of my discussion) seeks to revision the heroic mould through his construction of Coltaine of the Crow Clan in Deadhouse Gates (2001). Deadhouse Gates centres on Coltaine, who is tasked with escorting tens of thousands of refugees across four hundred leagues of hostile territory. This re-evaluation of fantasy modes has significant ramifications for the future development of the genre as a whole. In order to explore how Erikson interrogates heroic representation, I briefly establish some of the distinctive characteristics of fantasy. I then explore how some major fantasy texts represent heroism, before investigating Erikson’s particular response to these traditions.

Abstract:
Young pre-main sequence stars of T Tauri type have appropriate ages for the beginning of the planetary formation process according to the currently most accepted models. However, T Tauri stars offer some challenges for the classical techniques of extrasolar planets detection by means of planetary transits. Principally, T Tauri stars have different types of variability that are mostly evident in their light curves. In this work is presented an analysis and characterization of the photometric variability of 52 southern T Tauri stars, from data obtained from the CASLEO and the EABA observatories, as a first step to learn how such variability may affect the detectability of transiting planetary embryos. Among the types of variabilities, the most frequent are due to the presence of spots on the stellar surfaces, as well as others related to processes of accretion and/or darkening by dust in the circumstellar disks.

Abstract:
AbstractThe notions of plastic flow localization are reviewed here. It have been shown that each type of localized plasticity pattern corresponds to a given stage of deformation hardening. In the course of plastic flow development a changeover in the types of localization patterns occurs. The types of localization patterns are limited to a total of four pattern types. A correspondence has been set up between the emergent localization pattern and the respective flow stage. It is found that the localization patterns are manifestations of the autowave nature of plastic flow localization process, with each pattern type corresponding to a definite type of autowave. Propagation velocity, dispersion and grain size dependence of wavelength have been determined experimentally for the phase autowave. An elastic-plastic strain invariant has also been introduced to relate the elastic and plastic properties of the deforming medium. It is found that the autowave’s characteristics follow directly from the latter invariant. A hypothetic quasi-particle has been introduced which correlates with the localized plasticity autowave; the probable properties of the quasi-particle have been estimated. Taking the quasi-particle approach, the characteristics of the plastic flow localization process are considered herein.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the frame of a statistical tolerance analysis of complex assemblies, for example an aircraft wing, the capability to predict accurately and fast specified, very small quantiles of the distribution of the assembly key characteristic becomes crucial. The problem is significantly magnified, when the tolerance synthesis problem is considered in which several tolerance analyses are performed and thus, a reliability analysis problem is nested inside an optimisation one in a fully probabilistic approach. The need to reduce the computational time and accurately estimate the specified probabilities is critical. Therefore, herein, a systematic study on several state of the art simulation methods is performed whilst they are critically evaluated with respect to their efficiency to deal with tolerance analysis problems. It is demonstrated that tolerance analysis problems are characterised by high dimensionality, high non-linearity of the state functions, disconnected failure domains, implicit state functions and small probability estimations. Therefore, the successful implementation of reliability methods becomes a formidable task. Herein, advanced simulation methods are combined with in-house developed assembly models based on the Homogeneous Transformation Matrix method as well as off-the-self Computer Aided Tolerance tools. The main outcome of the work is that by using an appropriate reliability method, computational time can be reduced whilst the probability of defected products can be accurately predicted. Furthermore, the connection of advanced mathematical toolboxes with off-the-self 3D tolerance tools into a process integration framework introduces benefits to successfully deal with the tolerance allocation problem in the future using dedicated and powerful computational tools.

Abstract:
In recent past virulent disease outbreaks have ravaged different parts of the world. The impact have been felt worldwide. During these outbreaks health workers are usually at high risk for contracting the infections. Rendering maternal antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care can be challenging during these outbreaks. Some of these disease that have debuted fearsome outbreaks in the recent past are described briefly in terms of their characteristics, pathology, and treatments. The struggles involved in containing one of the outbreaks are highlighted. The dilemma that ensued as a result of seeking for balance between obligation, heroic midwifery interventions, and sense of calling have been explored. Special emphasis is accorded to highlighting the experiences of midwives during the recent 2014–2015 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Recommended principles to guide midwifery practices suitable for sustaining the safety of families needing midwifery care and health care providers rendering midwifery care are described.

Abstract:
As we saw in the previous chapter, classic approaches to understanding leadership all shared the view that leadership is a specialised role – they focused on the individual and, whilst some of these theories looked at what other influences there may be (i.e. the situational context), they did so through the lens of the primary leader, carrying out leadership functions. This then can be seen as their one key limitation – they are leadercentric and don’t tend to recognise followers’ characteristics or initiatives (Uhl-Bien, Riggio, Lowe, & Carsten, 2014). This focus on the ‘heroic leader’ has, over the last 50 years, become increasingly criticised, as researchers began to look at leadership behaviours from a influence perspective, considering the dynamics of the leader-follower behaviours and leadership styles that might influence or change the behaviours of their followers or work subordinates. As Burns (1978) suggested, at this point, we knew a lot about leaders, whilst knowing very little about leadership. The body of work that grew out of such observations was largely concerned with what became known as charismatic and transactional /transformational leadership (Bass, 1985). Here scholars had started to focus on leadership styles – what is it that leaders do that makes them effective – and on the impact the leader has on their followers.

Abstract:
In recent decades we have seen examples of how some organizations lack the capabilities necessary to maneuver in times of uncertain, rapidly changing and unstable environments. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the importance of the ability to make quick responses to changing environments became evident. In a military context, dealing with such unstable circumstances has been commonplace for some hundred years. Based on this observation, we seek to answer the following questions: What can we learn from the military concept mission command that can have an impact on leadership in civilian organizations? In order to answer these questions, we first discuss and define the concept of mission command. Using document analysis and participatory observation, we define mission command as a leadership concept and examine examples of mission command leadership styles in civilian organizations. Furthermore, we discuss whether classic leadership theory includes important characteristics of mission command. Main findings include what civilian organizations can learn from how military units have maneuvered in uncertain and complex environments, and secondly, how mission command is based on an understanding of how leadership is an organizational capability. This article focuses on the leader as part of an organizational system, and not the “heroic perspective” of the leader in person. We conclude by suggesting developing intention-based leadership as a theoretical concept for civilian use of the military leadership philosophy.

The partially submerged ventilated propeller (PSVP) is of interest to many researchers and ship builders due to its high propulsive efficiency and thrusting capability at the high sea states. As a matter of fact, it is now used for those ships of high speed up to 50 knots. However, its full capability is not totally utilized to date due to the complex nature of both hydrodynamic and material problems. It is a well known fact that PSVP fails materially after a certain period of time. The cause of the failure is not fully understood to date. Although PSVP is tested in the form of propeller for many years, the detailed ventilation phenomena, i.e., blade entry problems are not fully investigated. The paper presented herein will discuss about the results of blade entry experiments with two-dimensional blades of triangular shape used.

Abstract:
The work to be presented herein is a Computational Fluid Dynamics investigation of the complex fluid mechanisms that occur inside a non-steady, three-dimensional, supersonic pressure exchange ejector, specifically with regard to the pressure exchange mechanisms and the induction processes between a driving “primary” fluid and a driven “secondary” fluid and how this is related to the pressure exchange zone. This paper is based upon utilizing a non-steady flow field resulting in the work of pressure forces acting at a fluid interface between primary and secondary flows. These interfaces are produced through the aerodynamic design of a flow field, non-steady in the laboratory frame of reference, consisting of rotating oblique shock waves and expansion fans. Minimizing the possible losses from the oblique shocks and boundary layers offer the potential of achieving adiabatic efficiencies approaching those of turbo-machines. The results will show the length of pressure exchange zone. Results will show some characteristics of flow induction mechanism, especially when a pressure recovery is needed.

Abstract:
One requirement for impact tests, performed for packaging qualification, is that the target surface or target supporting surface must be “essentially unyielding”. The definition of “essentially unyielding,”, includes the characteristics of being both rigid and unyielding. The unyielding characteristic of a surface is shown without much difficulty by demonstrating limited, local permanent deformation after impact. However, for a surface to be proven rigid, the structural properties that influence the dynamic response must be known and compared to the energy spectrum associated with anticipated impact tests. The methodology and procedure for a cost effective approach using standard modal testing techniques to quickly demonstrate that a surface in essentially unyielding, is described herein.

Abstract:
This paper reports novel microcantilever metrology tools to investigate free microjets emanating from a micromachined nozzle having 10 μm diameter. Microcantilever sensors are well-suited to interrogate these flows due to their high spatial and temporal resolution. In this work, microcantilevers with integrated piezoresistors have been used to detect the breakup distance of free microjets, and microcantilevers with integrated resistive heaters have been applied to study microjet cooling and phase change characteristics. Measured microjet thrusts were in the range of 10 – 60 μN and heat fluxes were measured in the range of 25 – 350 °C. The convective heat fluxes by microjet impingement boiling were estimated at 2.9 – 7.6 kW/cm2. The techniques reported herein are promising to characterize microscale flows.
