Hu, Lingyi. "Hero, non-hero, and anti-hero : a critical study of the development of Chen Jiangong's fiction." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29934.

Full text
Abstract:
This M.A. thesis is a critical study of Chen Jiangong's fiction, chiefly attempting to reveal the process of thematic development in this author's works by way of tracing the hero through non-hero to anti-hero. The first chapter, which is biographical, makes a brief account of Chen's family background, personal experience as well as the unique personality fostered by his ten year career as a coal-miner. The second chapter presents an analysis of the thematic defects of his early fiction, and meanwhile some technical matters are succinctly introduced. The third chapter deals with the stylistic traits -- subject matter, narrative technique and language -- of the three stories which left untouched in the previous chapter due to their different way of representation. In order to show clearly Chen's two styles, a comparison of these three stories with his other early works is frequently made. The fourth chapter is an interpretation of his two mature works "No. 9 Winch Handle Alley" and "Looking for Fun." The centre of attention is mainly concentrated on "the sense of tragicomedy" -- a philosophy of life rather than a mere technique Chen acquired after he disposed of former literary dogmas. The fifth chapter is devoted to a comparative study of his masterpiece "Curlylocks" and how it was influenced by J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye". The aspect of anti-heroism is especially stressed. The sixth chapter is a summary in which Chen's thematic transformation from heroism to anti-heroism is reiterated and his literary achievements are evaluated.

Abstract:
Popular graphic narratives often depict stories of survival, of growing up, of the difficulties of self-identification, of the personal traumas that we live with from day to day, and the larger traumas that follow us throughout our lives. Integral to the livelihood of this art form are the mainly Jewish artists who have been responsible for the development of comics in late 1930's through to the present day. Through an analysis of Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Art Spiegelman's Maus, and Epileptic by David B., this thesis explores the common historical, traditional, theoretical, and philosophical themes brought to the graphic form by artists who identify with Jewishness.

Huard, Warren. "Hero cult in Pausanias." Thesis, McGill University, 2012. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=110538.

Full text
Abstract:
The explicit and implicit definitional criteria of cult heroes as described by Pausanias are examined in an attempt to understand heroes in the terms of ancient Greek religion. The distinctions between gods, heroes, and other mortals are examined. Particular attention is paid to the rituals indicated by the verbs enagizein and thyein with a view towards understanding their role in hero cult. It is found that the sacrifice made to heroes distinguishes the one who sacrifices to them from the one who sacrifices to gods and that hero cult plays an important role in the religious life of the polis through its rituals of purification.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the life and times of my Welsh father who was born in 1904 and died in 1976. It is a personal story which sits within the contemporary public history of both Great Britain and Europe. Supported by primary sources and secondary scholarship the work is presented in the style of a memoir which uses creative writing techniques. The use of this method is supported by an analysis of approaches to writing history posited by renowned historians and the work of contemporary writers of creative academic non-fiction. Note is also made of criticisms of memory recall and attitudes towards speculation. This dissertation, supported by extensive and detailed research provides a solid foundation for understanding the constraints, boundaries and opportunities my father had within the broader context of significant twentieth- century themes such as class, attitudes towards marriage and divorce, World War II and post-war reconstruction. Central to this history is the process of discovering a Welsh family, their early twentieth- century working-class living conditions, education and career opportunities. Conditions in pre-war Britain and the lead-up to the declaration of war on Germany in 1939 are explained before unexpected ways of contributing to the war effort are explored. Revelation of austere conditions in post war Britain, the impact of the Beveridge Report and its effect on education precede the conclusions which reflect on the benefits of writing a personal history. Finally note is made of the influence of the historical process and techniques involved.

Abstract:
Predicting language outcomes in children who at age two are "late talkers" is a concern of Speech Language Pathologists. Currently, there is no conclusive data allowing specialists to predict which children will outgrow their delays and which children will not. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the effect of a receptive language delay on the outcome of the slow expressive language delayed child, and determine whether or not it is a viable predictor of poor outcomes. The subject information used in this project was compiled from the data collected and reported by Paul (1991) during the Portland Language Development Project (PLDP). Children in the PLDP first participated in the longitudinal study between the ages of twenty to thirtyfour months. They were categorized as being slow in expressive language development if they produced fewer that fifty intelligible words during this age range. They were then subgrouped into an expressive-receptive delayed group if they scored more than one standard deviation below the mean on the Reynell Developmental Language Scales. Of the twenty-five subjects with complete data over the five years of the study, nineteen were considered to be solely expressively delayed, while the remaining six were classified as having both an expressive and a receptive language delay. Lee's Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS) (1974) was used to track the subject's expressive language abilities to the age of seven. DSS scores were analyzed yearly, using the Mann-Whitney nonparametric statistical test. This would determine whether the subjects considered to be both expressively and receptively delayed were exhibiting more difficulties in their expressive language abilities than those subjects with expressive delays alone. The results of the study indicated that significant differences did not exist between the two groups. Therefore, there was insufficient evidence to conclude that a receptive language delay at twenty to thirty-four months of age is a feasible predictor of lasting expressive language delays. This leads to the recommendation that additional research be conducted focusing on areas other than receptive language abilities as being predictors of poor expressive language outcomes.

Abstract:
To make an omelette, you must break a few eggs! Some individuals would argue that, to make the world a better place, you must break a few social and legal constraints. The belief that social norms and the law are unjust and hinder social improvement is not uncommon. Most individuals at times imagine how they could make the world a better place if only they were free from the shackles of society and the law. The majority do not follow up these views with behaviour due to the costs involved. A small subset of altruists, however, pursue their prosocial desires and goals via behaviors that would be classified as antisocial. Due to the high costs involved in such behavior, these individuals are Extreme altruists. Comparatively little research has been done on the phenomenon of Extreme Altruism. This research seeks to address that. A literature review of the Dark Triad suggested that individuals high in antisocial personality traits are not incapable of acting prosocial as originally considered. Instead their reliance on cognitive empathy may direct them towards utilitarian approaches of helping others. Furthermore, a systematic review of the positive relationship between prosocial behaviour and antisocial traits suggests that narcissists and psychopaths are capable of altruism, if given the means to express this behaviour. The lack of evidence of such expression may be due to an inherent bias in the reporting of such individuals’ actions. An extreme altruist subculture, the Real Life Superhero movement (RLSH), was used to test the proposed relationship between antisocial traits and extreme altruism. Analysis suggests that components within the narcissism spectrum may be the most likely candidates to be related to extreme altruism. The findings of this thesis not only support the proposal that traits from within the antisocial personality continuum can fuel the extreme altruism but also suggest an exciting new direction for research into altruism as a whole.

Hero Reports extends the rationale of New York City's "See Something, Say Something" campaign-an alert public can be a good security measure. The current political climate within the United States translates the MTA's tactics into ones of fear. Instead of fostering collective security, these calls for vigilance create rifts between people and communities. An unhealthy impact of the "See Something, Say Something" campaign encourages people to look at each other with heightened and prejudicial suspicion. Although other projects have sought to interrogate the tactics of such citizen-detective campaigns, they do not provide productive alternatives. Because of this, projects seeking to deflect fear, only serve to reify and preserve its power. An alternative technology is needed to effectively destabilize the message of fear inherent in the MTA campaign. Hero Reports counterbalances the vigilance associated with suspicion and Othering with measures of positive and contextual alertness. It is a technology that builds communities that are truly, and collectively, empowering. Hero Reports provides this alternative first by aggregating stories of everyday heroism, and then by thematically, geographically and temporally mapping them. By linking and contextualizing discrete moments of heroism, Hero Reports promotes a public discourse about how we create, enforce and value social norms. Balancing the empirical ways we measure crime, Hero Reports provides the groundwork for determining the empirical parameters for heroism.

Cooper, Natasha Soli. "Rewriting the female tragic hero." Thesis, Durham University, 2015. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11330/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis undertakes an investigation of the female tragic hero, through the engagement of and reflection on intertextual strategies in a range of writings from the classical to the present. Rewritings of female characters became a motif of second-wave feminism, which began in the late 1970s, where intertextual exploration was regarded as a useful feminist tool for revisiting patriarchal constructions of women in literature and other media. In particular, the genre of Tragedy was a key focus for rewriting, the desire to revisit the great tragic female figures of earlier literatures. Beyond this, the application of theories of femininity and feminist theory to female tragic characters provides a lens through which to re-read these characters, as ever-present and ever-evolving stereotypes of female-ness that are still powerful, inspiring and open to rewriting. The thesis first explores key concepts in discussions of Tragedy and a variety of relevant feminist theories. The thesis then proceeds to focus on a particular canonic tragic period of literature – Classical, Religious, and Renaissance, respectively – while discussing specific characters as representative of female figures of the age, alongside later rewritings of them. Through these readings, the thesis seeks to demonstrate how stereotypes of femininity are constructed, and how they may be demystified. The final chapter further engages some of these stereotypes as they have entered popular culture. By attempting to analyse a corpus of texts from differing time periods and cultures, this thesis develops the suggestion that female characters across time and space have been realised through their depiction as human beings striving for their own authorship and scripts, and so rewriting Tragedy in ways that might now be regarded as “postmodern”.

Full text
Abstract:

In this essay I look at J.M Coetzee’s Disgrace from a rather different perspective. I argue that, despite his less than heroic attributes, David Lurie is the protagonist of an adventure and follows Joseph Campbell’s pattern of the hero’s ditto. Furthermore, the goal of David Lurie’s journey lies in self-realization and self-reinvention, which is not typical for the hero’s journey. The Ultimate Boon is usually something else but different times call for different heroes. In J.M. Coetzee and the Ethics of Reading, Derek Attridge suggests that David Lurie grows on the reader throughout the novel and is a better person at the end (Attridge 183). This indicates that David Lurie goes through a process personally that changes him in a positive direction. Besides Campbell’s theory, the theories of Propp and Stanford are presented and put to good use as theoretical background. Since this essay deals with both narratology and structuralism I provide short explanations of these two branches of literature criticism as presented in Peter Barry’s Beginning Theory. I then discuss relevant passages from Disgrace in connection with the different stages of the hero’s journey as described by Campbell. I do so in the order they are presented in Campbell’s book.

Full text
Abstract:
Who is the military hero? What does he represent? And, how is he remade and brought into recognition? This thesis uses four diverse ‘sites of remaking’ to explore these questions, specifically drawing on the Plymouth military community theatre project Boots at the Door, the Invictus Games, Help for Heroes, and the Military Wives Choir. Using these sites, I argue that the remaking and reclaiming of the hero in the framing of war takes place through complex, spatially and temporally situated negotiations which mobilise not only the hero subject himself, but also his performative others. This research draws into conversation feminist theory from Judith Butler, Sara Ahmed, and Lauren Berlant with existing literature in critical military studies and political theory. Crucially, I argue that Butler’s (2009) analysis of the frame does not go far enough in telling us how it is that the frame might function. The research presented in this thesis helps to give texture and detail to our understanding of the framing of war, and allows us to consider how the hero might function within it as a deferred promise of happiness (Ahmed 2010).

Abstract:

Because of the unique features of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and Hazardous Electromagnetic Effects on Ordnance (HERO), much research and money has gone into protecting weapon systems and ordnance against it. The EMP and HERO phenomena do have a variety of differences and require differences of hardening technique to protect against it. However, they both involve radiation effects and can prematurely initiate ordnance via the electroexplosive device (EED). Protection of weapon systems and ordnance against electronic damage and upset plus EED initiation takes on more of an art form rather than science once basic principles are applied. Nevertheless by relating these two programs via the initiating temperature of the EED. they can be accurately compared with each other. Because of this observation, the two programs can be effectively combined to work jointly on ordnance hardening and protection including all forms of radiation type hazards, present and future.

Stefanson, Dominic. "Man as hero - hero as citizen : models of heroic thought and action in Homer, Plato and Rousseau /." Title page, table of contents and abstract only, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/37731.

Full text
Abstract:
Ever since Homer told the tales of magnificent men and called these men heroes, the siren song of heroic achievement has been impossible to resist. By consistently acting in a manner that is above the capacity of normal human beings, a hero becomes a model of emulation and inspiration for ordinary, lesser mortals. This thesis traces the development of normative models of heroic thought and action in the work of Homer, Plato and Rousseau. It argues that models of heroism have evolved according to changing conceptions of the political institutions that comprise a polis and, in turn, notions of citizenship. Homer establishes the heroic ideal and offers an image of Man as Hero. The Homeric hero is a man of transparent action who is never incapacitated because he acts upon his instincts. Unrestrained by doubt, he soars above humanity and performs deeds that assure him of everlasting fame and glory. The Homeric hero is a warrior-prince who lives in the absence of a polis. He rules his community as a patriarch who places his personal quest for glory above the dictates of the common good. The Homeric hero is consequently limited in his ability to act as a model of emulation for those who live in a polis. In an historical period that gave rise to the polis as a desirable and unavoidable aspect of human life, Plato remodels heroic ideals. Thus Plato's ideals of heroism could survive and prosper alongside political structures and institutions guided by the demands of the common good. The philosophical hero exalted in the Platonic dialogues gains true knowledge, which enables him to excel at all activities he undertakes. The philosopher is impelled to channel his vast superiority into the realm of political leadership. Plato recasts the Hero as Citizen, an elite citizen who rules for the benefit of all. Plato's model of heroism, like Homer's, is premised on an anti-egalitarian, hierarchical conception of human worth. In the Social Contract, Rousseau aims to reconcile modern ideals of human equality with Homeric and Platonic hierarchical notions of heroic excellence. The Social Contract attempts to make all citizens equally heroic by insisting that men can only excel when they all participate equally in political sovereignty. Failing to reconcile heroism and equality, however, Rousseau chooses heroism and reverts firstly to aristocratic political formulas before finally abandoning politics altogether as a positive force for humanity. His work nevertheless inspired both a lasting notion of human equality that shaped the modern political landscape and evoked the romantic modern notion of an isolated individual, as epitomised by Rousseau himself, heroically climbing the peaks of human achievement. Rousseau's model of individual heroism effectively completes the cycle and returns the notion of heroism to where it begun with Homer, Man as Hero. The concept of the heroism, traced through these theorists, shows it to be a changing terrain yet consistent in its allure.

It has been known for a long period of time that the body and beauty ideals in society do not include all types of bodies. The fashion industry is known to be exceptional good at excluding bigger bodytypes, and it is well known that it is slim models that is representing majority of it. Our chosen problem for this essay is based on the fact that norm-breaking bodies are underrepresented in society and in the fashion industry. Our purpose with this essay was to investigate how the fashion magazine Veckorevyn relates to their manifest, called Size Hero. This manifest is based on a protest against the prevailing body and beauty ideals that exists in society. We will also analyse how many normative vs. norm-breaking bodies there are as a total representation in the magazine, and how they are presented. We also intend to problematize the concept of the word "plus size", its use and meaning. The chosen method for our analysis is based on a multimethod research and the choice of this method was made because we wanted to have an answer to how underrepresented the norm-breaking bodies are and how they are being portrayed when so. Our material consists of all of Veckorevyn's published magazines for one year. We have analyzed them with the help of a semiotic image analysis and through a quantitative method. Together with the semiotic image analysis, we have used Hansen and Machin's bearers of denotations and connotations in order to analyze the images. Our result showed that Veckorevyn is fulfilling their manifest but on the whole the norm- breaking bodies were still very underrepresented.

Abstract:
This study investigates how a player’s personality type might affect a player’s choice of playable character class and, by extension, their playstyle in a MOBA game. 6014 participants completed a survey consisting of questions regarding most played character and their preferred character to play. Following this their personality types were set using the Big-Five personality type model. Results show several interesting correlations between a player’s choice of character class, player motivation, and personality traits. For instance, players most often playing the Support or Warrior hero class tend to score higher on agreeableness. Certain differences between male and female players are also noted.

Abstract:
This thesis works towards a redefinition of the representation of heroic masculinity in the autobiographical narratives written by the canonical British war poets in response to the Great War. The texts have been analysed from the perspective of the tension between two myths: the ‘Victorian hero myth’ and the ‘Ghost myth.’ The Victorian hero myth refers to the representation of heroic masculinity in mid-to late-nineteenth century Britain, based on the epic and romance traditions and on an essentialist conception of manhood promoted by imperial propaganda, the Boer War experience and the public-school ethos. The Ghost myth, on the other hand, emphasises the idea that the Great War destroyed the representation of the soldier and of war itself as heroic, highlighting not only the discontinuities with a heroic past but the figure of the soldier as a ghost, a weak, vulnerable and emasculated human being. Although the texts under study are regarded as significant examples of the Ghost myth, this thesis argues that such a view is too limited and simplistic as regards the representation of war and, most essentially, of the figure of the soldier, taking insufficiently into account the complexity of response to a diverse and multifaceted experience. A close and detailed analysis of the selected war diaries, letters, memoirs and autobiographical novels shows that much of the finest literature of the Great War refuses single-minded interpretations and transcends the conventional patriotic-heroic and protest-anti-heroic readings to explore the ambiguities and contradictions and to eventually redefine the heroic ideal. This thesis essentially focuses on how the tension between the two dominant myths is expressed in the relational aspect – the soldier’s attitudes towards the comrade, the friend, the lover, the enemy and the coward – not only from the perspective of an identity crisis but also as the source of a viable alternative model of heroic masculinity.

Abstract:

Ioannou, Maria. "Hero or villain? : criminals' experience of crime." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2006. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/13629/.

Full text
Abstract:
A neglected area of research within criminality has been that of the actual experience of the offence for the offender. The social science literature contains only scattered evidence of what it means, feels, sounds or looks like to commit a particular crime. Katz (1988) in his work Seductions of Crime proposed that empirical research has to focus on the foreground, rather than the background of crime and that the emotional significance of crimes needs to be considered more fully in order to understand the psychological processes that sustain and encourage cnme. This research examines and proposes a model of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) by exploring the emotions that criminals experience and the narrative roles that they act out across a broad range of crimes. Hypotheses and a series of questions were derived from the Circumplex of Emotions (Russell, 1997), Frye (1957), Narrative Theory (McAdams, 1988) and its link with Investigative Psychology (Canter, 1994). The analysis was based on 120 cases. Convicted for a variety of crimes, incarcerated criminals were interviewed and the data were subjected to Smallest Space Analysis (SSA). Results showed that the emotions reflected the circumplex structure of emotions postulated by Russell (1997) for non-criminal experiences. Thus, it was possible to identify four themes in relation to emotions: Elation. Calm. Distress. and Depression. However, they showed a stronger distinction between pleasure and displeasure than for the normal range of noncriminal experiences. with Russell's 'arousal' dimension being less clearly differentiated. In addition, criminals' emotions were found to be more intense than these of a "normal" population. Concerning criminal narrative roles four distinct themes were identified. These themes are: Adventurer. Professional. Revenger and Victim that reflect Frye's (1957) four story forms (Mythoi): Comedy, Irony, Romance and Tragedy. Further analysis showed that the emotional experiences are thematically significantly associated to the narrative roles, a finding that was supported both by statistical tests and Smallest Space Analysis. When both emotions and narrative roles were subjected to SSA four themes of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) were identified: Elated Adventurer, Calm Professional, Distressed Revenger and Depressed Victim from which scales with very high alpha reliability scores could be derived. Offenders' criminal history using the 042 Self-Report Offending Questionnaire (Youngs, 2001) was examined in relation to their Criminal Narrative Experience. Smallest Space Analysis showed that the d42 offending behaviours could be differentiated according to four themes: Violence, Dishonesty, Antisocial and Planning. Statistical tests revealed that the Elated Adventurer theme is significantly correlated with the offending behaviours of Planning, Dishonest and Antisocial while the Calm Professional with Planning. By examining differences between the index cnme and Criminal Narrative Experience analysis showed that different subsets of crimes were more likely to be associated with different emotions and narrative roles. The themes that reflect Criminal Narrative Experience were found to differentiate between different types of crimes. In broad terms, Elated Adventurer and Calm Professional were found to be associated with property offences (theft, burglary and robbery) and be experienced more pleasant than Distressed Revenger and Depressed Victim that were found to be associated with crimes against the person (sex offences, violence and murder) and experienced unpleasant. The implications of these findings for understanding crime on the basis of the Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) are discussed. Important future directions for the study of crime are outlined.

Abstract:
I am attempting to honestly share Black Elk's vision and story, John G. Neihardt modifies that story in order to embody Black Elk as the classical defeated hero. In transfiguring Black Elk into this image, Neihardt could not avoid the cultural "cues" which forced him to model Black Elk in the conventional image of the defeated hero as described in Bruce Rosenberg's Custer and the Epic of Defeat. By modifying the beginning and ending to Black Elk's story, Neihardt prepares and reinforces the reader's expectations of Black Elk's image as the classical defeated hero. Also, because Neihardt understands the central theme of Black Elk Speaks to be that of Black Elk's failure, it provides him with the incentive to modify Black Elk's vision to depict Black Elk as a classical hero. Finally, Neihardt transfigures Black Elk in order to reflect the contradictory paradigm of the Greek, Ranan, and Christian defeated hero.

This work analyses the aesthetic representation of the discourse of humanitarianism based on the role of the humanitarian as the main character of the heroic narrative of international politics. Understood as ensemble of techniques and procedures, humanitarianism classifies and reinforces discipline related to international politics through individual and collective behavior. This dissertation argues that this organization can be identified through the analysis of this discourse, especially in the pictures related to humanitarian politics and usually used on humanitarian campaigns by international humanitarian organizations and nongovernmental organizations. Campaigns that explore the identification and reflection of the spectator to its iconography tend to contribute to this construction of the humanitarian as the hero of the international politics, meaning the individual that saves and solves the problems and crises of the international, such as conflicts, suffering, hunger, poverty, and environment crises. The images of the humanitarian hero contribute to its perpetuation as a modern myth, a model of conduct of the individual action regarding international politics and distant suffering that ironically mobilizes a collective moral through self-centered gratification.

Markesinis, E. F. "Andrei Siniavskii : a hero of his time?" Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2010. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/20239/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an artistic biography of Andrei Siniavskii (1925-1997) as a writer in and of his time, showing how this subtle and complex author found his way in a society polarised into heroes and villains, patriots and traitors; how he progresses from identification with the value system and ideology of his time to reaction against it, his dissidence expressed in literary terms. Beyond this, I hope to show how he moves to a new conception of the writer in the fusion of his creative and critical selves that is dominated neither by the voice of the collective ‘we’, nor by the voice of the individual ‘I’ but which leaves space in the text for engagement by the reader. Individual readers, passing manuscripts from hand to hand or reciting texts orally had assured the continuity of the Russian literary tradition during the long bleak years when literature seemed to mark time under the strictures of Soviet ideology and Socialist Realist aesthetics. Siniavskii’s work is motivated by the passionate belief that the way forward for Russian literature lay in this same spark generated between individual reader and text. My thesis is organised chronologically and is based on a close reading of Siniavskii’s work. It explores the way his art does not simply reflect the circumstances of his life and times but is actively shaped by an intricate commerce between the two. I intend to show how Siniavskii’s distancing himself, first ideologically then physically, from the Soviet system is counterbalanced by his creative reintegration with Russia through literature.

Abstract:
Disney's Hercules is an apt modern reception of the ancient mythology of Herakles, acknowledging ancient and modern sources surrounding three types of classical hero: the archetypal hero, influenced by the ideas of Joseph Campbell; the Pan-Hellenic hero, distilled from ancient Greek exempla of heroism from epic and other genres of ancient literature; and the tragic hero, inspired by the heroic criteria presented in Aristotle's Poetics. By adapting these heroic types from their traditional ancient source myths, Disney's Hercules produces a new, contemporary definition of heroism—one informed by modern, Western family values. This adaptation renews the power of the myth of Herakles for a modern era, whose image and characteristics have been changed and adapted since ancient times to suit each receiving culture's conception of true heroism.

Smee, Lilla Julia. "Inventing fantasy: the prose romances of William Morris." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/8099.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis sheds light on Morris’s thematic concerns and narrative strategies in five of his little-studied prose romances: The Story of the Glittering Plain, The Wood Beyond the World, The Well at the World’s End, The Water of the Wondrous Isles and The Sundering Flood. The thesis argues that these romances can be read as significant texts in the development of the modern fantasy genre. The thesis aims to re-orient scholarly discussion of the prose romances in the context of fantasy literature. Chapter 1, ‘Inventing Fantasy’, locates the prose romances within the social and cultural context of their production. It discusses the nature of the contemporary reception of the prose romances, and analyses how modern criticism has begun to re-value the prose romances as significant works within the modern fantasy genre. The chapter then identifies the main critical issues in fantasy scholarship. Finally, the chapter sets out the critical methodology for the rest of the thesis. Chapter 2, ‘Inventing Place’, investigates the way Morris constructed his invented worlds. It identifies two points of reference for Morris’s ‘landscape of the mind’: one, his experience of real landscapes, particularly those of England and Iceland; and two, his Romantic imagination and desire to re-birth the romantic landscapes of medieval literature. The chapter utilises pastoral discourse, and its attendant rhetoric, in its close reading of the texts. It develops a critical foundation for the rest of the thesis by indicating the essential connection between the construction of place and the way in which the hero operates as part of the invented world. Chapter 3, ‘Inventing the Quest-Hero’, investigates the construction of the male hero and the quest within the invented world. It uses as its point of departure the conventional hero-myth pattern as established by Joseph Campbell and other structuralists. The chapter demonstrates how Morris departs from the conventional male-heroic paradigm in two key ways: first, through the creation of strong female characters and second, through the type of conclusion he gives to the heroes’ quests. The chapter demonstrates the way the quests are related to the hero’s separation from the world of the familiar, to the hero’s interaction with the forces of nature, and to the hero’s relationship with women. The chapter pays particular attention to the role of the Maid in Walter’s quest in The Wood Beyond the World, and argues that Morris was working towards the creation of a new type of female hero. Chapter 4, ‘Inventing the Female Quest-Hero,’ examines the construction of Birdalone in The Water of the Wondrous Isles as Morris’s unique female hero, reading her narrative through a feminist revisioning of the male hero-myth, and with reference to the established discourses of the pastoral. Chapter 5, ‘Conclusion’, summarises the main points of the thesis, and suggests some ways forward for critical scholarship of the prose romances.

Abstract:

Media and culture are interrelated, which shapes what is culturally relevant. War films reflect a culture?s view on war as well as the viability of a culture?s mythology of war. Grounded in the concepts of war myth and genre, this thesis takes the stance that the Iraq and Afghanistan War film genre transforms the image of the American warrior. Iraq and Afghanistan War films, specifically The Hurt Locker, Green Zone, Lone Survivor, and American Sniper illuminate the destructive reality of war and the humanness of the warrior hero. They reaffirm the warrior?s heroism and sacrifice while also acknowledging war as damaging to the warrior?s psyches, hearts, minds, and bodies.
