Abstract:
Abstract: Is Hero just another martial-arts film? Who is the hero in Hero? Does the film suggest a justification for the despotism in Chinese history, as many Chinese critics have charged? Is there any connection between Hero and Zhang Yimou's previous works? This review focuses on these challenging questions as it explores the intricacies of Hero.

Hu, Lingyi. "Hero, non-hero, and anti-hero : a critical study of the development of Chen Jiangong's fiction." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29934.

Full text
Abstract:
This M.A. thesis is a critical study of Chen Jiangong's fiction, chiefly attempting to reveal the process of thematic development in this author's works by way of tracing the hero through non-hero to anti-hero. The first chapter, which is biographical, makes a brief account of Chen's family background, personal experience as well as the unique personality fostered by his ten year career as a coal-miner. The second chapter presents an analysis of the thematic defects of his early fiction, and meanwhile some technical matters are succinctly introduced. The third chapter deals with the stylistic traits -- subject matter, narrative technique and language -- of the three stories which left untouched in the previous chapter due to their different way of representation. In order to show clearly Chen's two styles, a comparison of these three stories with his other early works is frequently made. The fourth chapter is an interpretation of his two mature works "No. 9 Winch Handle Alley" and "Looking for Fun." The centre of attention is mainly concentrated on "the sense of tragicomedy" -- a philosophy of life rather than a mere technique Chen acquired after he disposed of former literary dogmas. The fifth chapter is devoted to a comparative study of his masterpiece "Curlylocks" and how it was influenced by J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye". The aspect of anti-heroism is especially stressed. The sixth chapter is a summary in which Chen's thematic transformation from heroism to anti-heroism is reiterated and his literary achievements are evaluated.

Daly, Kimberly. "The hero, the anti-hero, and the Jew in graphic trauma narratives." Thesis, McGill University, 2011. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=97176.

Abstract:
Popular graphic narratives often depict stories of survival, of growing up, of the difficulties of self-identification, of the personal traumas that we live with from day to day, and the larger traumas that follow us throughout our lives. Integral to the livelihood of this art form are the mainly Jewish artists who have been responsible for the development of comics in late 1930's through to the present day. Through an analysis of Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Art Spiegelman's Maus, and Epileptic by David B., this thesis explores the common historical, traditional, theoretical, and philosophical themes brought to the graphic form by artists who identify with Jewishness.

Huard, Warren. "Hero cult in Pausanias." Thesis, McGill University, 2012. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=110538.

Full text
Abstract:
The explicit and implicit definitional criteria of cult heroes as described by Pausanias are examined in an attempt to understand heroes in the terms of ancient Greek religion. The distinctions between gods, heroes, and other mortals are examined. Particular attention is paid to the rituals indicated by the verbs enagizein and thyein with a view towards understanding their role in hero cult. It is found that the sacrifice made to heroes distinguishes the one who sacrifices to them from the one who sacrifices to gods and that hero cult plays an important role in the religious life of the polis through its rituals of purification.

Edwards, Ann. "My father, my hero." Thesis, Edwards, Ann (2012) My father, my hero. Honours thesis, Murdoch University, 2012. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/13623/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the life and times of my Welsh father who was born in 1904 and died in 1976. It is a personal story which sits within the contemporary public history of both Great Britain and Europe. Supported by primary sources and secondary scholarship the work is presented in the style of a memoir which uses creative writing techniques. The use of this method is supported by an analysis of approaches to writing history posited by renowned historians and the work of contemporary writers of creative academic non-fiction. Note is also made of criticisms of memory recall and attitudes towards speculation. This dissertation, supported by extensive and detailed research provides a solid foundation for understanding the constraints, boundaries and opportunities my father had within the broader context of significant twentieth- century themes such as class, attitudes towards marriage and divorce, World War II and post-war reconstruction. Central to this history is the process of discovering a Welsh family, their early twentieth- century working-class living conditions, education and career opportunities. Conditions in pre-war Britain and the lead-up to the declaration of war on Germany in 1939 are explained before unexpected ways of contributing to the war effort are explored. Revelation of austere conditions in post war Britain, the impact of the Beveridge Report and its effect on education precede the conclusions which reflect on the benefits of writing a personal history. Finally note is made of the influence of the historical process and techniques involved.
