Atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamine-6-isopropylamine-striazina) is an herbicide used worldwide to control weeds with potential to contaminate groundwater and harm sensitive crops in succession. The use of controlled release formulations of atrazine could be a strategy to mitigate environmental impact and contribute to improving the efficiency of weed control with atrazine. Aiming to determine the environmental performance and agronomic efficiency of atrazine formulation of controlled release (xerogel), compared with the commercial formulation were conducted one experiment in the field and three bioassays in greenhouse. The field experiment was implemented with the corn, using randomized blocks design, with split plots in a scheme (2 x 6) + 4. In the main plots were located formulations (atrazine xerogel and WG), and in sub-plots the atrazine concentrations (0, 3200, 3600, 4200, 5400 and 8000 g ha-1), with four additional control plots weeded. Soil samples were collected from each plot with 8000 g ha-1 for bioassays in the greenhouse to evaluate the persistence and leaching of the formulations. The experimental designs of bioassays were completely randomized. In the field experiment, we evaluated the density and visual control of weeds and yield of maize. In bioassays, the main variables were height, phytotoxicity, green and dry plant mass. In the first bioassay was selected cultivated species most suitable for use in tests to determine the persistence and leaching of atrazine formulations. In the field experiment, the formulation WG produced greater control of B. plantaginea than xerogel in earlier assessments, but in later assessments atrazine xerogel was more effective. There were no differences in grain yield of maize between the formulations and doses tested. The degree of sensitivity to atrazine varied according to species: okra and peas showed little sensitivity; oats and wheat had an intermediate; radish and tomato had the highest level of sensitivity to the presence of atrazine in soil. The bioavailability of atrazine to soil varied depending on the time and formulation: until 5 days after application, atrazine disponibility by xerogel formulation was higher and in period between 14 and 28 days, the bioavailability of atrazine by WG was higher than by xerogel; 35 days after application, atrazine xerogel showed higher disponibility than the WG. The half-life was 30 and 38 days for atrazine WG and xerogel, respectively. Higher concentrations of atrazine were found in surface soil (0-4 cm) in two formulations. However, the quantification of atrazine by bioassay indicated a greater concentration of WG formulation between 2 and 4 cm, in contrast with the results of chromatographic analysis, which indicated a greater concentration of the xerogel formulation.

It were studied two types of nozzles. The first one is a conic jet nozzle model JÁ 1,5. The second type is a flat fan nozzle model API 110-02. The application speed was 4km/h. It were used two similar sprayers set with boons 12 m wide and nozzles spaced by 0,5m. The spray solution for the fan jet nozzle was prepared with water, potassium nitrate and copper sulfate. For the conic jet nozzle theses salts were replaced by calcium nitrate and zinc sulfate. The targets were made of formica foils cut into square plates of 13 cm x 13 cm. One hundred of these plates were used to estimate the drift. In all the other 702 plates (117 replications for each type of target) it were made central circular holes of different diameters: 10,16 cm, 5,8 cm, 2,54 cm, 1,27 cm, 0,63 cm and 0,32 cm. The targets were randomly arranged on the ground. After spraying and drying the spray solution, each target was washed with 25 ml of de-ionized water. These water samples were filtered and analyzed in plasma spectrophotometer. The concentrations of the tracers in the final volume of 25 mL allowed to calculate the deposits of both spray solutions (in L/cmø) in each target. These data were converted in to percent of the means for each nozzle type and target size. Frequency distribution curves were fitted to the data. The Gompertz (y=e**(a-e**(-b-c*x))) model provided the highest determination coefficients, ranging from 0,985 and 0,997. In addition to the Relative Standard Deviation (RSD%) it were estimated the values of the mean, the median, the mode and the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 90, 95, 98 and 99 percents, using the frequency distribution curves.
The adjuvants are used all over the world in order to improve the effectiveness of the herbicides formulations, independent of target. There are two main ways in which adjuvants can improve the performance of the final product. First, increasing the amount of active ingredient retained by the target and secondly, promoting its absorption. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of mineral and vegetable oils in physical and chemical characteristics of the application and action of the herbicide Gesaprim 500® (atrazine). The treatments studied were: atrazine; atrazine + Natur'l Óleo®; atrazine + Agr'Óleo®; atrazine + Assist® and check. All adjuvants were used at a rate of 0.5% of the volume of spray applied. The indicator plants used in studies on the effects of adjuvants on the action of atrazine were: Ipomoea grandifolia, Brachiaria plantaginea, Merremia cissoides and Euphorbia heterophylla. The parameters studied were: surface tension, pH, effect of time preparing the solutions and pH on surface tension, evaporation of the solution, droplet size, effective weed control, rain influence in weed control, the active ingredient absorption velocity using the fluorometer method. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replications. So with the results we can conclude that the use of vegetable or mineral oils had a positive influence on physical and chemical characteristics and at the application acts the treatments showed a highly efficient control of the studied species

Abstract: The crabgrass has extensive colonization and geographical distribution, with strong growth even in drought conditions and the control performance has not been consistent, especially with Photosystem II inhibiting herbicides. The reasons for this lack of control consistenc are many, but the existence of different species can be considered a major. Based on the above reports, this aimed study to identify the different species of the Digitaria spp complex and evaluate responses to the action of several photosystem - II inhibiting herbicides in studies of dose-response curves. This study was conducted evaluating the performance of six bouts of crabgrass in the sugarcane in São Paulo State to herbicides: ametryn, diuron; ametryn + clomazone, diuron + hexazinone, diuron + hexazinone + mesotrione; hexazinone; metribuzim and tebuthiuron. Herbicides were applied in pre-emergence with four replications evaluating the control until 60 DAA. The results obtained, it can be seen that there really is diversity of species within the genus Digitaria in areas cultivated with sugarcane. Only in these studies were identified D. horizontalis, D. nuda and D. ciliares, which showed differences in susceptibility to herbicides. There were also significant differences among accessions within species D. horizontalis and D. nuda. The fact that all plants are designed with the popular name of crabgrass, the results of studies of chemical control, can often change depending on the species, leading to differences in biological effectiveness of herbicides on this species complex, as there are unusual in that two or more of them occur in the same area

Abstract:
With the introduction of herbicide resistant Palmer amaranth into Kentucky during the past 10 years there has been an increasing concern for effective control measures in grain production. Field trials were performed in 2016 and 2017 near Barlow and Paris, KY to determine efficacy of chemical control programs targeting herbicide resistant Palmer amaranth. Percent visual control, effects on plant density and plant height were measured in 2016 to determine treatment effectiveness. Treatments containing four different sites of herbicide activity achieved an average of 98% control. Treatments containing only 3, 2 or 1 site of activity only achieved 64%, 45% and 33% control, respectively. Within the long-chain fatty acid inhibitors herbicides in this study, pre-emergent applied pyroxasulfone provided greater control than S-metolachlor or acetochlor. Pyroxasulfone also provided greater control than the photosystem II herbicides atrazine and metribuzin. In 2017 PRE treatments consisting of three-way mixtures of flumioxazin + pyroxasulfone + chlorimuron or S-metolachlor + metribuzin + fomesafen followed by a POST herbicide treatment provided > 90% suppression of Palmer amaranth 4 weeks after trial initiation. Post-emergence treatments containing glyphosate + dicamba or glyphosate + 2,4-D following a soil-applied pre-emergent treatment achieved the most effective season-long control of Palmer amaranth.

The presente work had as objectives to quantify the production of dry cultural residues of the man straws used as mulches in no-till systems, in the State of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul, as well as, to evaluate the wetting dynamic and the behavior of a dye (simulating herbicides), in different cultural residues. In the biomass survey it were evaluated the cultural residues (Kg of dry matter ha raised -1) of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), perennial ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), wheat (Triticum aestivum), harvested oat (Avena strigosa Schieb), rolled oat (Avena strigosa Schieb), corn (Zea mays), millet (Penisetum americanum) and braquiária grass (Brachiaria decumbens Stapf). The acumullated frequencies of the original data fitted well to the Gompertz model (Rø > 0,9064 e > 0,9758). The most and least uniform distribution of the cultural residues in the field were observed for corn and wheat respectivelly. The studies of the wetting dynamic and recovery of the dye FDC-1 were developed through simulation of artificial rain on 3000, 6000 and 9000 Kg of dry matter ha raised -1 of seven types of straws. The data fitted well to the Mitscherlich (Rø > 0,9064 and > 0,9758). The results indicated an uniformity tendency in the retention of the rain water among the different types of straws, with the increase of th amont of mulch. The formation fo dry points associated to preferential channels of running off, reduces the capacity of absorption and retention of the rain water by the straws. The total amounts of the dye FDC-1 that reached the soil were relatively uniform, after precipitations between 10 and 20 mm, independt of the type and amount of straw, indicating that both characteristics have minimum efects in the capacity of the dye in transporting the straw.

Abstract: Herbicides can contaminate aquatic environments in agricultural regions, affecting primary producers and, consequently, the food web and nutrient cycling. In this context, lotic macroalgae of the phylum Chlorophyta were collected and cultivated in three different concentrations (0.28; 3.5; and 6 mg L-1) of technical grade glyphosate and Roundup®, and one concentration (0.03 mg L-1) of aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), in addition to the control group (0 mg L-1). Were evaluated the photosynthetic response through the oxygen evolution, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and the chlorophyll a concentration, performed with one and seven days of exposure to the herbicide. The results show that, in general, Roundup® was the herbicide most negatively affected the photosynthetic responses of macroalgae tested, causing damage to the photosynthetic apparatus, reducing the photosynthetic rates, and chlorophyll a concentration. Technical grade glyphosate and AMPA likewise caused significant inhibitory effects on the photosynthetic response, although on a smaller scale. About the concentrations used, the 0.28 mg L-1, which correspond to the limit for Brazilian law in water for irrigation and animal consumption, led to effective reductions in the photosynthetic response of Nitella microcarpa var. wrightii (Roundup®) Nitella subglomerata (glyphosate technical grade and Roundup®) and Desmidium grevillei (Roundup®). The concentration of 0.03 mg L-1 used in the AMPA treatment also inhibited the phot... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract: It is common practice during the cultivation of sugarcane to use ripeners in order to anticipate the harvest. However, considering that there may be crops nearby, such as vegetables, it is important to emphasize the necessary care when applying these products, which is carried out by air, in order to avoid drifting. Sensitive crops, such as lettuce, can suffer deleterious effects. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the glyphosate, trinexapac-ethyl and sulfometuron ripening effects commonly used in sugarcane on 'Lucy Brown' and 'Vanda' lettuce growth. The experiment was installed in an open environment at the Laboratory of Weeds (LAPDA), UNESP / FCAV in the months of October and November. Lettuce seedlings were transplanted to a 5 L pot, each plant being the experimental plot. The experiment consisted of 15 treatments established in a randomized complete block design in a 3x5 factorial scheme, with five replications. The first factor corresponded to the ripeners and the second to the subdoses, in order to simulate the drift, being 0, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% of the recommended dose of each product, being applied when the seedlings presented at the beginning of the head formation, for the Lucy Brown cultivar and the 6 to 7 leaf stage for the Vanda cultivar. After application, the evaluations occurred at 5, 10, 15 and 20 days after application (DAA). Visual evaluations were performed based on the EWRC scale (1964), chlorophyll content, quantum efficiency of ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract:
Soil samples were collected from several corn fields with history of atrazine (herbicide) application. Samples were inoculated into Erlenmeyer flasks each containing 50m1 of minimal basal salts medium amended with 100 ppm atrazine as sole nitrogen source. Flasks were shaken at 200 rpm at ambient temperature and were examined daily for one week for microbial growth and/or disappearance of atrazine. Promising consortia were subcultured for further additional enrichments before characterization of potentially active protein (enzyme)fractions. Proteins from cell-free and cellbound fractions were compared for ability to denature atrazine. Following gel permeation chromatography, isolated protein fractions were examined for atrazinefound in the cell-bound fractions capable degrading degradation. Two were found in the cell-free fractions (approx. Mol. wts. 55kDa and 180kDa) and one (55 kDa) atrazine to hydroxyatrazine. Atrazine and its breakdown products (hydroxyatrazine in particular) were detected via HPLC using C18 and C8 columns with absorbance at 229 nm.

Herbicides are one of the most important factors that have contributed to protect crop yields. This is due to innovative weed control over the last 70 years. The over-reliance on a single herbicide active ingredient or mode of action impose a high selection pressure on a weed population and the selection of herbicide-resistant individual plants may occur. The intensity of selection imposed by herbicides and the initial frequency of herbicide resistant in a weed population play a major role in the herbicide resistance evolution. Gene flow by pollen, seed, and vegetative propagules have the potential to move herbicide-resistant weed species, as reported previous reported in Conyza canadensis and Amaranthus genus. Conyza canadensis and Amaranthus tuberculatus are potentially able to proliferate herbicide resistance by pollen and/or seeds due to be prolific seed producer and its pollen are capable to be disseminated for long distances. The general objectives of these studies were to characterize the herbicide resistance level of two weed species in Nebraska, United States. A greenhouse study was performed to characterize the fold of glyphosate resistance in horseweed populations from non-crop areas. Dose-response experiments with 28 horseweed populations were evaluated across nine glyphosate rates. A second greenhouse study was performed to characterize the level of a 2,4-D-resistant waterhemp population resistance to various auxinic herbicides. According to the first dose-response study, less than seven percent of the rangeland Conyza canadensis populations screened expressed “practical” resistance to glyphosate (plants surviving to most common glyphosate rate used in Nebraska of 1,260g ae ha-1). Therefore, low frequency of GR in horseweed populations was detected in Nebraska rangeland indicating that GR individuals dispersed from row crops into rangeland are not the predominant biotype in these non-row crop areas. For the second study, the results showed that 2,4-D-WR population were significantly more sensitive to Dicamba DGA, Dicamba DMA, Corasil, 2,4-DP, and 2,4-DP-p herbicides formulations, whereas survived to the higher doses of 2,4-D 2EHE, 2,4-D EE, 2,4-DB, MCPB, MCPA, MCPA 2EHE, CMPP and CMPP-p. The founds on this studied showed the 2,4-D-WR population exhibits cross-resistance to 2,4-D 2EHE, 2,4-D EE, 2,4-DB, MCPB, MCPA, MCPA 2EHE, CMPP and CMPP-p herbicides.

Abstract:
Abstract: The adjuvants are used all over the world in order to improve the effectiveness of the herbicides formulations, independent of target.

The crabgrass has extensive colonization and geographical distribution, with strong growth even in drought conditions and the control performance has not been consistent, especially with Photosystem II inhibiting herbicides. The reasons for this lack of control consistenc are many, but the existence of different species can be considered a major. Based on the above reports, this aimed study to identify the different species of the Digitaria spp complex and evaluate responses to the action of several photosystem – II inhibiting herbicides in studies of dose-response curves.

Abstract:
Development of microbial herbicides is constrained by unreliability in the field where conditions are often sub-optimal for infection. Crucially, sufficient moisture, often dew, is required to establish infection. Two model systems, Colletotrichum dematium (Pers. ex Fr. ) Grove on Chenopodium album L. and Mycocentrospora acerina (Hartig) Deighton on Viola arvensis Murr., have been investigated and formulation requirements for each system identified, principally to reduce the dew period necessary for infection. Effects of adjuvants (surfactants, stickers and humectants) on spore germination and appressorium formation were investigated in vitro. Few were toxic and then, principally, at high concentration. The surfactants Tween 40,60 and 80 were compatible with both pathogens. Similarly, the stickers acacia, ghatti, guar, karaya, locust bean and xanthan gums and low viscosity alginic acid were all non-toxic as was the humectant glycerol. Each pathogen reacted differently to the adjuvants and any potential microbial herbicide will need individual matching of adjuvants to give an effective formulation. A working formulation (rapeseed oil-in-water (1: 10 v/v) emulsion using 0.1 % v/v Tween 40 as the emulsifier) was found to reduce the dew period requirement of M. acerina from 36 to 18 hours. The formulation protected spores from desiccation for 24 hours after application, or for 16 hours following a sub-optimum dew period occurring immediately after application. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the applied spores, and the developing mycelium, were immersed in the oil deposit. Transmission electron microscopy of sections through formulation deposits on the leaf revealed that some inversion of the emulsion, to form a water-inoil deposit, had occurred, suggesting a mechanism of protection against desiccation. The oil phase infiltrated the cortical intercellular spaces only when the leaf was infected. This intercellular oil contained more water than that on the leaf surface. Emulsion-formulation applied to run-off with an 'air brush', consistently gave significantly better weed control under sub-optimal dew conditions than a formulation of surfactant only. When applied with a conventional hydraulic nozzle at 400 1 ha" the emulsion was only occasionally superior to the surfactant alone. Such interactions require further in-depth investigation. The importance of correct inoculum placement for maximum effectiveness, independent of formulation type, was highlighted. Unless all meristems are killed, survivors quickly grow, despite the death of neighbouring leaves and petioles, and the weed suffers merely a growth check. Formulation as emulsion improved diseasee stablishmenta nd diseasee xpressioni n the target weedo nly in somec ircumstancesF. urther researchin to spraya pplicationm ethodsa ndt heir interactions with formulation, host and environment is clearly necessary

Abstract:
The effects of nine herbicides were evaluated on five species of cacti selected to be congeneric with species classified as rare, threatened or endangered. Experimental plants were monitored at monthly intervals for survival and vigor for either six or sixteen months after herbicide treatment, depending on the overall condition of the untreated controls of each species. The severity of herbicide impact varied among active ingredients from lethality to virtually no effect. Some herbicides resulted in slow decline of treated plants, while for other herbicides most damage occurred within a short time after treatment. Some treated plants were observed to recover from herbicide damage, especially with paraquat. A wide variety of factors, both environmental as well as anatomical and physiological characteristics of the test plants are important in determining how a given plant will respond to herbicide exposure.

This research aimed to evaluate the effect of additional checks on experimental precision to each treatment of a randomized complete block design when determining selectivity of azafenidin + hexazinone, isoxaflutole, metribuzin and diuron + hexazinone on sugarcane, applied early and late postemergence in rainy and dry season. Field trials were carried out at Araras-SP, Brazil using sugarcane cv. RB835089 with burn pre-harvest system, during the rainy season of 2001 and the dry season of 2002. The treatments diuron + hexazinone (1170 + 330 g ha-1), azafenidin + hexazinone (192,5 + 247,5 g ha-1), metribuzin (1,92 L ha-1) e isoxaflutole (127,5 g ha-1) and hand-weeded correspondent checks for each treatment were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Larger experimental precision was achieved when additional checks where included in statistical analysis and so, compensated the practical disadvantage of increasing experimental area. Student's t test provided the best results for mean comparisons. In the rainy season and for early applications, only isoxaflutole reduced sugarcane production and caused injuries symptoms. Meanwhile, in late postemergence, whole treatments decreased sugarcane production, all except diuron + hexazinone, affected the technological characteristics estimated but only azafenidin + hexazinone caused injuries symptoms. During the dry season, early applications performed similarly to the checks but effects for all late postemergence treatments were detected, except in the case of yield and fluorescence index (Fv/Fm) estimations for metribuzin.

Abstract:
The use of herbicides for weed chemical management is one of the most efficient methods used nowadays. However, herbicides considered selective to the crop can cause some problems to the vegetative development or to the final yield. This way, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of four of the main herbicides used in the cotton crop, two of them used as pre-emergent of the crop and weeds (Clomazone and Diuron) and two used as post-emergent of the crop and weeds (Trifloxysulfuron-sodium e Pyrithiobac-sodium) in the varieties Fibermax 966, DeltaOpal and Aroeira, the main varieties commercially grown, with low, medium and high vegetative development. The experimental design used was the randomized blocks, with 4 replications. Each one of the blocks had 9 sup-plots to each variety, with a final number of 36 sub-plots. In the subplots of each variety there were 8 herbicides treatments plus the control treatment, this one left without weed interference along all the crop development, using manual weed control. The main features evaluated were plants height, Leaf Area Index (LAI), dry matter, yield, balls weight, seed germination and fiber quality. For both, the pre-emergent herbicide treatments, and postemergent treatments, there were injuries in the cotton plants, mainly to the treatments with highest doses (Diuron 2,0 kg ia/ha, Clomazone 600 g ia/ha, Trifloxysulfuron-sodium 7.5g ia g/ha and Pyrithiobac-sodium 140g ia/ha), however, these injuries were temporary and were not present in future evaluations. Regarding the effect of the injuries to the vegetative development, the cultivar Fibermax 966 showed Leaf Area Index and dry matter reduction in the post-emergent treatments, both in the second evaluation to the treatments in the highest dose. This decrease in plant development did not impact final yield, balls weight, seed germination or fiber quality. To the other varieties, the post-emergent herbicide treatments did not lead any vegetative development reduction when compared to the control treatment, neither to the final characteristics as yield, fiber quality and seed germination. For the pre-emergent herbicide treatments, Diuron in the highest dose caused greater damage to the different materials, leading to dry matter reduction and final yield for the cultivar Aroeira, when compared to the Clomazone treatment. For the other cultivars, the treatment did not present any effects in plants development, final yield or fiber quality.

The present study was motivated by the growing concern among scientists about the contamination of aquatic environments, either superficial or underground, by pesticides used in agriculture. It aimed to assess the contamination by herbicides of drinking water in Primavera do Leste, MT and of superficial and groundwater in cotton crop areas, evaluating the risk scenario in this region. This is a region of intense mechanized agriculture activity where large amounts of pesticides are used. A survey about pesticide usage in the surroundings of the city of Primavera do Leste; a description of the physical environment and a survey of climate data were carried out, which allowed a preliminary assessment of the potential for contamination by pesticides of superficial and underground waters in the region to be done. The active ingredients to be analyzed – atrazine and its metabolites desethylatrazine and desisopropylatrazine, simazine, metribuzin, metolachlor and trifluralin – were selected based on this evaluation. Sequentially, an analytical method for these substances in water was adapted from published methods and validated. Water samples were collected in three different periods, in 1998/1999: one in the end of the dry season; one in the beginning of the rainy season (planting period); other in the end of the rainy season (harvest period). Among the analyzed herbicides, metribuzin was the more frequently detected one in the three sampling periods. In the second sampling (beginning of rain) a greater number of samples contaminated with at least one of the studied substances was found. Maximum concentrations were: 0,415 μg L-1 of DEA; 0,156 μg L-1 of atrazine; 0,138 μg L-1 of simazine; 0,882 μg L-1 of metribuzin and 1,732 μg L-1 of metolachlor. None of the analyzed pesticides were detected in levels higher than the limits established by USEPA, which allowed us to conclude that the presence...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract:
Chloroacetanilide herbicides are widely used in agriculture, and thereby contribute to environmental pollution. Their fate, including in redox-dynamic receptor ecosystems such as wetlands, remains poorly understood. In this work, microbial degradation of chloroacetanilides (metolachlor, acetochlor and alachlor) was investigated by emerging chemical and molecular biological approaches, at the lab-scale using microcosm columns, and in situ, in outdoor constructed wetlands designed for the treatment of chemical pollutants originating from agriculture.A novel compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) method was developed, and the results indicated biodegradation of chloroacetanilides in wetlands, which was also suggested by detection of ethane sulfonic acid and oxanilic acid degradation products. In lab-scale wetland microcosms, chloroacetanilides were mainly degraded in anoxic rhizosphere zones, suggesting a predominant role of anaerobic processes. Chiral chromatographic analysis of metolachlor revealed preferential degradation of the (S) enantiomer of metolachlor, and further confirmed the role of biological processes in chloroacetanilide dissipation. Changes in hydrochemical variables and hydraulic conditions correlated with differences in wetland bacterial composition detected by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and pyrosequencing analyses of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene, confirming the potential of DNA-based bioindicators for follow-up of ecosystem functioning. On the basis of this work, detecting and identifying the microorganisms and biochemical pathways responsible for chloroacetanilide degradation in wetlands, as well as developing bacterial gene-based indicators of wetland functioning, emerge as research objectives for the near future

Abstract:
Halosulfuron applied POST with an adjuvant and ammonium sulfate was effective against lambsquarters and nutsedge. Rimsulfuron, flumetsulam, and thifensulfuron were effective against the pigweeds and purslane with minimal activity against lambsquarters. Halosulfuron and rimsulfuron were safe on melons and flumetsulam and thifensulfuron were marginally safe on cantaloupes. The combinations of these products may offer broader spectrum weed control.

Abstract:
Spinach exhibited progressively increased injury and crop stand reduction with increasing rates of s-metolachlor and dimethenamid-p. At the lowest rate applied, s-metolachlor at 0.38 lb ai/A caused minimal injury at 10% and slight stand reduction compared to the untreated check. Dimethenamid-p injured spinach 25% at the lowest rate applied and significant stand reduction was observed at 0.5 lb ai/A or greater. At equivalent rates, dimethenamid-p was more injurious to spinach than s-metolachlor.

Abstract:
Thirteen herbicide treatments were applied on May 8, 2006, on a golf course fairway to assess transition and turf quality effects. Initial injury to perennial ryegrass was most extreme for Tranxit GTA when applied at 1.0 oz/prod/acre and Katana applied at 2.0 oz/prod/acre. Katana resulted in the total elimination of ryegrass and resulted in a fully necrotic canopy (straw cover) within two weeks after application to July 19, 2006 (72 Days after treatment). The development and persistence of necrotic leaf tissue of perennial ryegrass (straw) had the greatest impact on decreasing overall turfgrass quality ratings. No treatment went through the summer without some loss of quality at some point, including the untreated control. Certainty had little or no effect on transition when applied once at the rate of 1.25 oz/prod/acre. Surflan was not effective in ryegrass transition. The tank mix of Transit and nicosulfuron applied at the rate of 0.25 oz/prod./A each, produced an enhanced transition with nominal quality. In similar fashion, Monument applied at 0.35 oz./A produced an enhanced transition with nominal quality. A rates used in this test, other treatments had either too slow of a transition or had poor and extended low quality turf scores from rapid development of dead ryegrass (straw) and subsequent slow bermudagrass re-establishment. The UTC turf maintained a high percentage of living green ryegrass into the summer and 20% live ryegrass on August 8, 2006 which is roughly six weeks before the next overseeding.

Speedzone at 4.0 pt/A provided rapid control of khakiweed and gave 82% control at 17 days after treatment in one of three experiments. Spotlight at 1.0 pt/A alone was only effective at about 50%. BAS-514 and BAS-790 were not effective against khakiweed when applied alone. In a second experiment, sequential applications of Speedzone and Spotlight plus Turflon Ester provided exceptional control of greater than 95%. Initial applications of the POST applications that were combined with Gallery offered control of new emerging seedlings of khakiweed. Monument combined with Gallery gave decreased khakiweed control compared to Monument applied alone. An antagonistic effect could be occurring with the tank-mix combination of the two herbicides. Carfentrazone containing products, QuickSilver at 2 oz/A alone was not effective on khakiweed compared to the package mix product Speedzone. For the ALS-inhibiting herbicides, flazasulfuron and Certainty were the least effective while penoxsulam and Image were comparable to Monument in providing about 50% control.

Weeds can cause significant yield losses in the agriculture, among them we can point out morning-glory species in many crops. To control that weed, we can use herbicides inhibiting protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase, in a selective way for a variety of crops. The objectives were: (i) to relate the response of Ipomoea hederifolia and Ipomoea quamoclit with the variation of doses of carfentrazone-ethyl and saflufenacil, of spray temperature at the moment of spraying, and of spray volume used; and (ii) to compare the efficacy of those herbicides sprayed isolately or mixed to glyphosate. Experiments were carried out from dose-response with carfentrazone-ethyl (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 5, 7.5, 10, 20, 35, 50, and 75 g ha-1 of the labeled herbicide Aurora®, 400 g a.i. L-1, FMC) and with saflufenacil (0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 20, 35, and 50 g ha-1 of the labeled herbicide Heat®, 700 g a.i. kg-1, Basf), of variation of spray temperature (10 to 30 oC) and of variation of spraying volume (150 to 250 L ha-1). Evaluations were performed 14 days after spraying. In spite of showing differential response in relation to the dry mass accumulation, doses from 4 mL ha-1 of Aurora® and 5 g ha-1 of Heat® killed plants for both I. hederifolia and I. quamoclit. For carfentrazone-ethyl, increasing 10 L ha-1 in the spray volume reduced dry mass by 1.43% and 1.26% for I. hederifolia and I. quamoclit, respectively, while for saflufenacil, the reduction was by 12.73% and 11.30%, respectively for both species. For carfentrazone-ethyl, increasing 1 oC of spray temperature of reduced the dry mass by 0.22% and 0.35% for I. hederifolia and I. quamoclit, respectively, while for saflufenacil the reduction was by 0.56% and 0.30%, respectively for both species. The mix of carfentrazone-ethyl or saflufenacil with glyphosate provided a reduction by, at least, 10% greater of dry mass of I. hederifolia. We concluded that: carfentrazone-ethyl and saflufenacil are highly efficient to control I. hederifolia and I. quamoclit; increasing the spray volume and spray temperature provide greater efficacy to control both species, for both herbicides; and the mix with glyphosate improve the efficacy of controlling I. hederifolia for both herbicides

Abstract:
Euphorbia heterophylla (EPHHL) is an important weed species in world agriculture and its control becomes difficult due to herbicide resistance. To develop proper EPHHL management strategies it is important to know the level and the mechanisms of resistance and persistence of resistant populations in the fields. Experiments were carried out to study the resistance of EPHHL to ALS and PROTOX inhibitors at biochemical, plant and population levels. The objectives on chapter I are to confirm the occurrence of resistance to ALS inhibitors and to determine whether there is cross resistance to other chemical groups, such as imidazolinone, sulfonylurea, pyrimidinyl (thio) benzoates and triazolopyrimidines in biotypes of EPHHL with multiple resistance (ALS and PROTOX). The objectives on chapter II are to confirm the existence of new EPHHL biotypes with resistance PROTOX in the states of Paraná and Rondônia and to determine whether there is cross resistance to other chemical group, such as diphenyl ethers, N-phenyl-phthalimide, triazolinone, oxadiazole and pyrimidinedione. The objectives on chapter III are to evaluate the activity of the ALS enzyme from biotypes with multiple resistance and to compare it to the enzyme activity of susceptible population in the absence and in the presence of the herbicides imazapyr, imazethapyr and nicosulfuron. The objectives on chapter IV is to characterize the activity of several antioxidant enzymes, such as peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase in EPHHL biotypes treated with PROTOXinhibiting herbicides. The objective on chapter V are to identify the persistence of EPHHL populations resistant to ALS inhibitors on fields from Southwest and Western Paraná that were resistant in a previous survey and check for resistance to glyphosate in EPHHL these crops. The results support the hypothesis that EPHHL biotypes from Bom Sucesso do Sul, Vitorino, Vilhena and Medianeira have multiple resistance to ALS and PROTOX inhibitors. Four EPHHL biotypes are cross-resistant to all ALS chemical groups and five populations are cross-resistant to the PROTOX inhibitors tested. The resistance to ALS inhibitors on the EPHHL biotypes evaluated is attributed to the lower sensitivity of the herbicide target enzyme. The activity of all antioxidant enzymes, both on the resistant and susceptible biotypes, is dependent of the herbicide and on the dose used and can be one of the mechanisms of resistance to PROTOX inhibitors. The biotypes of EPHHL resistant to ALS-inhibiting herbicides remain in the area even after long-term observation of resistance. The resistance to PROTOX inhibitors also remains in areas, but less frequently.

This project aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the herbicide fluridone to control aquatic plants from the genus Egeria and its effect on water quality in outdoor tanks and a small size pond. The experiment in tanks had the purpose to evaluate the effect of increasing rates of fluridone in two formulations, liquid and pellet, in the control of the species Egeria densa Planchon and Egeria najas Planchon. Concentrations of 10, 20, 40, 80 and 150 ppb of the liquid formulation and 20, 40, 80 and 150 ppb of the pellet were used. Forty fiberglass tanks with 320 liters of volume were used. In each tank, 20 plants of each species were planted using apical cuttings of 0,2 m. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, with 10 treatments and 4 replications. A single application of the herbicide was made in July 1998 and evaluations of symptoms were done at 8, 15, 29, 35, 51 and 63 days after the application. Results showed that fluridone, at 80 and 150 ppb of both liquid and pellet formulations, was efficient to control both species. Concentrations of 10, 20 and 40 ppb of the liquid formulation and 20 and 40 ppb of the pellet allowed the plants to regrowth at the last evaluation. In those treatments, fluridone residues in water, analyzed at 63 days after the herbicide application, were lower than 10 ppb. In the experimental condition of outdoor tanks, Egeria najas showed to be more sensitive to the herbicide in the former evaluation, but the final result was similar to that obtained for Egeria densa. In the experiment at the small size pond, the effect of keeping the fluridone concentration for an extended period of time on the control of Egeria najas was evaluated. One 1,980 square meter pond was treated seven times with fluridone, aiming to keep herbicide concentrations in water between 10 and 20 ppb... (Complete abstract, click electronic address below).

Abstract: Diuron (3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) is a ureic herbicide whose acute oral LD50 in rats is 3400 mg/Kg. It is widely utilized in agriculture and its effects in the animal organism are still poorlv known, especially in the reproductive system. The aim of this work was to evaluate a possible toxic effect of diuron on the male reproductive system. For this, adult male rats (9 or 10 animals per group) received, for 30 consecutive days, by oral gavage. 125 or 250 mg/Kg/day of diuron (technical grade) dissolved in corn oil. The control group received only the vehicle, following the same experimental protocol. At the end of the treatment, male reproductive organs, liver and kidneys were collected and weighed. Some of the testis and epididymis were utilized for sperm counts, and samples of liver and kidneys to quantify diuron residues, by gas chromatography, Another group of animals was evaluated with respect to sexual behavior and fertility, being mated with females in natural estrous. At the end of the treatment, residues of diuron were found in the liver of all treated rats and there was an increase of the weight of this organ in both doses. The exposure to diuron did not provoke statistically significant differences in testosterone concentration, daily sperm production, sperm reserves in the epididymis or sperm morphology. Sexual behavior was not altered due to the treatment, however there was statistically significant diminution in the number of fetuses produced by rats that mated with males treated with the lower dose. It was concluded that the dose of 125 mg/Kg of diuron. administered in these experimental conditions, was toxic from the reproductive point of view.

Abstract:
Amicarbazone is a triazolinone herbicide developed to substitute atrazine in the world market. Several technologies have been studied aiming at the removal of pesticides from wastewater, seeking to study the degradation mechanisms involved and the degree of toxicity of the photoproducts formed. In this context, the main goal of this work is to study the degradation of amicarbazone in aqueous solution by direct photolysis, suggesting possible chemical structures for the transformation products according to a theoretical and fundamental approach. Parameters such as herbicide concentration, pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, nitrate concentration, and propan-2-ol as a free radical scavenger were considered. Among the parameters studied in the photolysis process, the pH showed influence on the photochemical mechanism of amicarbazone degradation, favoring or not the formation of particular intermediates. It was found that the photolysis generates amicarbazole as the primary degradation product in acidic medium as a result of the deamination mechanism. The use of UV/H2O2 process enabled the complete degradation of amicarbazone in a reaction time of 60 minutes at most. However, even with the use of the auxiliary oxidant reactant, the complete mineralization of amicarbazone was not achieved, with 58% reduction of dissolved organic carbon in the best experimental condition studied.

Abstract: The presente work had as objectives to quantify the production of dry cultural residues of the man straws used as mulches in no-till systems, in the State of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul, as well as, to evaluate the wetting dynamic and the behavior of a dye (simulating herbicides), in different cultural residues. The formation fo "dry points" associated to "preferential channels of running off", reduces the capacity of absorption and retention of the rain water by the straws. The total amounts of the dye FDC-1 that reached the soil were relatively uniform, after precipitations between 10 and 20 mm, independt of the type and amount of straw, indicating that both characteristics have minimum efects in the capacity of the dye in transporting the straw.

The use of pesticides has increased in recent years due to the expansion of planting areas and the presence of more resistant pests. In Rio Grande do Sul / Brazil, the rice crops are considered to be primarily responsible for the launch of these products in water bodies, since the state concentrates 61% of irrigated rice culture in the country. Among the most widely used herbicides in these plantations, are variations of Roundup®, whose active ingredient is glyphosate. The mode of action of glyphosate as an herbicide is the inhibition of EPSPS, a key enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of essential amionoacids in plants. Nevertheless, some studies have shown that glyphosate can achieve different animal species, considered as non-target species. In the view of the above, the purpose of this study was to determine comparatively the effects of the glyphosate-based formulations, Roundup Original® (RO), Roundup Transorb® (RT) and Roundup WG® (RWG), may be causing in fish that inhabit these regions where herbicides are released. For that, an acute mortality test was performed with 0.5, 1 e 5 mg.L-1 of glyphosate, calculated following its concentration in each formulation, and we chosen the one that did not cause mortalities in fish to evaluate oxidative parameters and sperm quality of Jenynsia multidentitata. Only at a concentration of 0.5 mg.L-1 of glyphosate, there was no mortality in any formulation, however, the results showed that above this, RT caused higher mortality. As for the oxidative parameters, there was an imbalance between antioxidant defenses and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with consequent damage in fish liver. This situation was more evident in animals exposed to RO, where was observed an increase in ROS and a decrease in total antioxidant capacity at 24 h of test, that reflected in a significant increase in LPO at 96 h. With respect to sperm quality, only the motility analysis, mitochondrial functionality and DNA integrity of sperm are presented under the effect of herbicides, being motility the most sensitive parameter because it was inhibited by glyphosate in the 3 experimental formulations (RO RT and RWG) at 24 and 96 h of exposure. In summary, we conclude that the glyphosate-based herbicides cause damage to the fish species J. multidentata, inducing oxidative stress and negatively influencing reproduction. As it is for the comparative analysis, the RT appears to be the most toxic since it causes increased mortality, however, when at non-lethal and environmentally relevant concentration such as 0.5 mg.L-1 of glyphosate, RO which contains higher amounts of components called "inert", causes increased oxidative damage, but the 3 formulations affects sperm quality in the same intensity.

Abstract:
The activity and the selectivity of cycloxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butylJ-3-hydroxy- 5-(2H-tetrahydrothiopyran-3-yl)-2-cyclohexen-l-one}, code designation BAS 517, were examined flIst with etiolated seedlings of com (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Etiolated soybean seedlings were not affected by cycloxydim. The degree of growth inhibition of com varied with concentration of cycloxydim and incubation time. Compared to mesocotyls and coleoptiles, radicles of corn were the most sensitive to cycloxydim. Meristematic tissues appeared to be the site of action of cycloxydim as root meristems were the first to show symptoms. A band of reddening tissue developed at meristematic tips followed by the complete cessation of root growth. In a study comparing activities of technical grade and formulated cycloxydim and sethoxydim, {2-[ l-(ethoxyimino )butyl}- 5-[2-(ethylthio )propy11-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-l-one}, formulated compounds were more potent than the technical grade chemicals without formulation additives. Technical sethoxydim was more potent than technical cycloxydim. Root tips excised from com and soybean seedlings were used subsequently for cycloxydim treatments. The activity and selectivity of cycloxydim expressed at the isolated root tip level were similar to those of cycloxydim bioassayed with whole seedlings. However, root tips appeared to be more sensitive than the whole seedlings. Injury at the tissue and cell levels of the 2-mm root tips that were treated with various concentrations of cycloxydim was examined after 24 hours incubation. Concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 10 μM cycloxydim caused severe cell vacuolization. A gradient of decreasing injury from epidermal cells toward the center of roots was observed. This pattern of injury appeared to reflect the penetration of cycloxydim into roots along a concentration gradient.

Abstract:
Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) and common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) are two of the most troublesome weeds in soybean. Both weeds possess widespread resistance to glyphosate and acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicides resulting in the use of protoporphyrinogen oxidase- (PPO) inhibitors to control these biotypes, although PPO-resistant biotypes are increasing. New soybean herbicide-resistant trait technologies enable novel herbicide combinations. Combinations of two herbicide sites-of-action (SOA) improved control 19 to 25% and 14 to 19% of Palmer amaranth and common ragweed, respectively, versus using one SOA (mesotrione, dicamba, 2,4-D, or glufosinate alone). Seed production of 5 to 10 cm Palmer amaranth and common ragweed was reduced greater than 76% by fomesafen, auxin (dicamba and 2,4-D), or glufosinate containing treatments. Some weeds survived and set seed even when treated at the proper size. As weed size increased from 10 to 30 cm, control diminished and fecundity increased, underscoring the importance of proper herbicide application timing. Effective preemergence herbicides reduced the number of weeds present at the postemergence application compared to no treatment, reducing the likelihood of herbicide resistance development. Dicamba, 2,4-D, or glufosinate applied alone or auxin + glufosinate combinations reduced Palmer amaranth seed production greater than 95% when applied at first visible female inflorescence; this first report, in addition to previous reports on individual herbicides, indicates this application timing may be useful for soil seed bank management. This research informs mitigation of herbicide resistance spread and development.
Master of Science in Life Sciences
Over 30 million hectares of soybeans were harvested in 2019 in the United States, totaling over $31 billion in value. Two of the most troublesome weeds in soybean, Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) and common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) can cause even greater yield reductions in soybean, up to 79 to 95%, respectively. Frequent, exclusive, and repeated use of a single herbicide has led to multiple herbicide-resistance in both of these weeds. Co-applying two effective herbicides reduces the likelihood of resistance development. New soybean varieties have been genetically modified for resistance to herbicides that were previously unusable, allowing new herbicide combinations. Research was established to investigate these herbicide options to control and reduce seed production of Palmer amaranth and common ragweed with the overarching goal of mitigating herbicide resistance, particularly resistance to protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibiting herbicides, which are a critical part of herbicide options in soybean production. Preemergence herbicides are vital tools in herbicide programs, reducing the number of weeds present at a postemergence application and thereby reducing the risk of herbicide resistance development to the postemergence herbicide. PPO herbicides (flumioxazin, sulfentrazone, or fomesafen) applied preemergence reduced Palmer amaranth and common ragweed density at the postemergence application 82 to 89% and 53 to 94%, respectively. The preemergence herbicide used did not affect control four weeks after the postemergence herbicides were applied. Postemergence herbicides were applied targeting three weed heights: 5 to 10 cm (ideal), 10 to 20 cm, and 20 to 30 cm. Control decreased as weed height increased and larger weeds had greater biomass and seed production, underscoring the importance of proper herbicide application timing. The single site-of-action treatments dicamba, 2,4-D, glufosinate, or fomesafen resulted in greater than 85 and 92% morality of 5 to 10 cm Palmer amaranth and common ragweed, respectively. Palmer amaranth and common ragweed control improved by 19 to 25% and 14 to 19%, respectively, when using two herbicide sites-of-action increased versus using one SOA (mesotrione, dicamba, 2,4-D, or glufosinate alone). The use of two herbicide sites of action resulted in maximum biomass reductions, depending on weed height, of 57 to 96% and 73 to 85% for Palmer amaranth and common ragweed, respectively. Dicamba, 2,4-D, glufosinate alone and in combination with fomesafen reduced seed production (relative to the nontreated) of 5 to 10 cm Palmer amaranth and common ragweed greater than 98 and 76%, respectively. Dicamba, 2,4-D, and glufosinate applied alone or auxin (dicamba and 2,4-D) and glufosinate combinations reduced Palmer amaranth seed production greater than 95% when applied at first visible female inflorescence. This indicates that these herbicides may be useful in soil weed seed bank management. This research reinforces the utility of PPO herbicides for preemergence control and their efficacy postemergence when combined with another effective herbicide, a practice known to reduce herbicide resistance development. This research also reinforces the potential for dicamba, 2,4-D, or glufosinate to reduce weed seed production when applied at a delayed timing. Future research should investigate the progeny of these weeds treated with herbicides at a delayed timing to evaluate the potential for this practice to reduce herbicide resistance development.

Abstract: Nicosulfuron stands out among the principal post-emergent herbicides used in the maize crop. Among the commercial technologies available, there are some hybrids considered tolerant to this molecule and can present a differential sensitivity, process which is related to the environment, growth stage and herbicide dose. The objective of the study was to determine the sensitivity of corn hybrids to the herbicide nicosulfuron by means of biochemical markers. The first experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions in a completely randomized design with four replications in a factorial scheme 4 x 2 (hybrids x doses). The herbicide was applied at 0 and 120 g a.i. ha-1, when the plants were in the V3 stage. Electron transport rate (ETR), phytointoxication and plant height were evaluated at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days after treatment (DAT). Plants were collected at 14 DAT to determine its dry weight. The most sensitive and tolerant hybrids were selected to determinate the content of 2-aminobutyric acid and valine, leucine and isoleucine amino acids, in the same evaluation period. The second experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with five replications in a factorial scheme 8 x 2 (hybrids x doses), the nicosulfuron was applied at 0 and 120 g a.i. ha-1. The experiment was conducted in different periods, for V2 and V6 maize growing stage. One day after the herbicide application, the plants were collected to determine the content of nicosulfuron, 2-aminobutyric and quinic acid, as well as valine, leucine and isoleucine amino acids. During the experiment, the ETR was evaluated at 1, 7, 10, 14, 21 and 28 DAT, and the variables plant height and phytointoxication at 7, 14, 21 and 28 DAT. At 7 DAT the chlorophyll content was determined. Plants were collected at 28 DAT to determine the shoot dry weight. In the first experiment, the collection of the plants one day after application was considered the ...

Saflufenacil is a new herbicide which is being deployed commercially in Brazil. Many factors are necessary toward successful of commercially herbicide, among them stands out the selectivity for interests crops, the effectiveness under weed species and the environment safety. In the first one were experienced seven periods of sowing bean after saflufenacil application (0, 5, 10, 15, 25, 35 e 50 AHA) in the absence and presence of saflufenacil herbicide (0 e 29,4 g a.i. ha-1). In the second one two saflufenacil concentrations (0; 14,7 e 29,4 g a.i. ha-1) were tested into ten bean cultivars. For both tests were determined the stand, plant high, yield and yield components. The first bioassay was carried out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications in a factorial design 8 x 5 x 4, where the first factor is saflufenacil concentrations (0, 2.45, 4.9, 9.8, 14.7, 19.6, 24, 5 and 29.4 g ai ha-1), the second the bioindicators cucumber, watermelon, cabotiá, summer squash and beets the third factor periods (5, 10, 15 and 20 DAS). Evaluations were performed booth and plant height, mass of fresh (MPAV) and dry (MPAS) shoots. The second and third bioassays were conducted simultaneously, and the treatments consisted of soil sampling times after saflufenacil spraying (29.4 g ai ha-1) (0, 5, 10, 15, 25, 35 , 50 and 100 days). In one bioassay we used cucumber and in the second we used beet as biomarkers for the presence of saflufenacil the soil. The same variables were determined from the first bioassay. Treatments were saflufenacil (0, 0.35, 0.7, 1.4, 2.1 and 2.8 g ai ha-1) applied alone or combined with paraquat (0, 1 and 3 g ai ha-1 ), metribuzin (0, 38.4 and 105.6 g ai ha-1) and clomazone (0, 288 and 504 g ai ha-1). The evaluated variables were visual control, and MPAV MPAS. The application of pre-emergence saflufenacil requires between 10 and 25 days after application to be performed seeding bean cultivar IPR-Tiziu. The BRS Talismã cultivar showed higher tolerance to saflufenacil, while the cultivar Jalo Precoce showed greater sensitivity to the herbicide. The species with the highest sensitivity to saflufenacil were cucumber and beet. The persistence of saflufenacil in Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico determined by bioassay with cucumber and beets, was between 25 and 35 days after herbicide application. For the A. tenella control, there was synergism for combinations saflufenacil with higher doses of paraquat and metribuzin, but not with clomazone. For MPAV and MPAS, all associations were synergistic, independently of herbicide or dose that was used.

Abstract:
Field experiments were established in 2000 and 2001 at the Agricultural Research and Education Complex in Bowling Green, Kentucky to evaluate herbicide efficacy on annual morningglory (Ipomoea spp.) species and other weeds. A randomized complete block design was utilized in each study with each treatment being replicated three times. Plots consisted of four 76 cm rows, 9.1 m in length. The two center rows of each plot were treated, with the outside rows of each plot serving as a weedy check. Crop response, weed control, and grain yield data were collected. Four different experiments were conducted. Two experiments utilized treatments of glyphosate and sulfosate alone and with tankmixes on glyphosate-tolerant soybeans. Two experiments examined various herbicide tankmixes applied to non-glyphosatetolerant soybeans. Soybean injury influenced by postemergence treatments of glyphosate and sulfosate alone and with chlorimuron-ethyl ranged from 0 to 5% four days after treatment (DAT) with the addition of chlorimuron-ethyl resulting in greater injury. Morningglory control 14 DAT ranged from 48 to 63% with sulfosate at 700 g ai/ha providing less control than glyphosate at 1120 g ai/ha. No treatment differences occurred 29 and 42 DAT. No statistical differences among treatments occurred among other weed species evaluated. Soybean injury influenced by postemergence treatments of glyphosate and sulfosate alone and with fomesafen and chloransulam-methyl 4 DAT ranged from 0 to 17% with the addition of fomesafen resulting in greater injury than the addition of chloransulam-methyl. Momingglory control 14 DAT ranged from 60 to 88% with glyphosate + imazethapyr at 840 + 71 g ai/ha providing the least control and sulfosate + fomesafen at 700 + 201 g ai/ha providing greater control. Soybean injury influenced by pre and postemergence treatments 7 DAT ranged from 0 to 30% in conventional soybeans. Applications of carfentrazone resulted in the greatest injury. Momingglory control 20 days after planting (DAP) ranged from 0 to 99% with chloransulam + sulfentrazone providing the highest control. Momingglory control 28 DAT ranged from 30 to 99% with s-metolachlor + metribuzin + acifluorfen + fenoxaprop-ethyl + fluazifop-P providing the least control. Common cocklebur control ranged from 13% to 97% 20 DAP with pendimethalin + imazethapyr providing the least control. Treatments containing aciflourfen + bentazon controlled common cocklebur > 80% 28 DAT. Soybean injury influenced by preemergence and postemergence treatments 7 DAT in conventional soybeans ranged from 0 to 33% with sulfentrazone + clomazone + chlorimuron-ethyl + carfentrazone resulting in the greatest injury. Momingglory control 7 DAT ranged from 0 to 99% with sulfentrazone + clomazone plus chlorimuron-ethyl + carfentrazone having the greatest control. Momingglory control 28 DAT ranged from 82 to 94% with no differences among treatment.

Abstract:
The primary objective of this thesis was to develop a system through which precision spraying of herbicides could be applied to a corn field at an early post-emergence stage of development. The initial hypotheses underlying this thesis were that it was possible to: 1) capture a series of digital images using a tractor-mounted camera; 2) tag these images using a Global Positioning System (GPS); 3) develop an algorithm to detect weeds in an image; 4) develop a weed map using a series of images tagged with the presence or absence of weeds; and 5) significantly reduce the amount of spraying needed by spraying only areas known to contain weeds, thus reducing both costs and environmental impact. The experimental conditions consisted of a field of corn crop 12-17 days into their development stage and at the 3-5 leaf stage of development. A tractor-mounted camera interfaced to a GPS system and linked to a laptop computer was used for gathering images of the corn field.Due to the complexities involved in separating weeds the crop, the bulk of the thesis work was dedicated to the analysis of different algorithms through which weeds could be identified and weed maps could be created. The algorithm selected for the identification of weeds was the greenness method, using a pixel-by-pixel analysis of the red-green-blue (RGB) intensity values. The weed-tagged images were used to develop a series of algorithms to create weed maps. These algorithms utilized a set of image aggregation methods in order to establish a spray- or no-spray value for each location on the field, which were then plotted to demonstrate the locations of the field to be sprayed. The algorithms were validated through the use of the bootstrap statistical method. Once done, the potential herbicide savings for each weed mapping algorithm were evaluated. The results indicated that the algorithms had the potential to yield a maximum herbicide savings of 76% when compared with blanket spraying of the entire field. Factors that influenced the potential herbicide savings included the weed density necessary before spraying is employed, the number of images chosen to aggregate, and the size of the field as a whole. Seven algorithms were 100% successful in detecting weeds. Validation testing revealed that, when compared with a control situation in which 100% of the field would be sprayed, the algorithm that sprayed the smallest percentage of the field while still eliminating all weeds yielded a potential 10% herbicide savings; under the same parameters, the best performing real-time algorithm yielded a potential 9% herbicide savings. Therefore, it was determined that a solution involving the real-time acquisition and processing of video data and using the greenness method for weed detection could be employed in order to obtain savings in herbicide application.

Abstract:
The migration of waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus) into northern sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris) growing regions has prompted sugarbeet producers to utilize inter-row cultivation in their weed management program as no currently registered herbicides can control glyphosate-resistant waterhemp postemergence. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate cultivation efficacy on waterhemp and common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) and to evaluate cultivation safety on sugarbeet. Cultivation efficacy experiments demonstrated cultivation removes 65% of waterhemp and has no effect on further waterhemp emergence, but can be deleterious to common lambsquarters control if cultivation is timed before sugarbeet canopy closure. The ideal time to implement inter-row cultivation in sugarbeet is after sugarbeet canopy is closed and can suppress further weed emergence. Cultivation safety experiments demonstrated three cultivations as late as August 16 had no effect on sugarbeet yield and quality. Cultivation is a valuable tool to control glyphosate-resistant weeds with no deleterious effects if used correctly.
