Abstract:
"Michael Psellos’ Chronographia as Oral Prose. Until now only Herbert Hunger and Warren Treadgold had pointed out that Michael Psellos has his Chronographia not written by his own hand but dictated to a professional scribe. Therefore also the structure of this work clearly has an oral character: many references back and forward, transition formulas, dialogues instead of orations. All this corresponds to its almost entirely oral sources and its aural reception. Psellos thinks of the recipients of the Chronographia not als readers but as listeners, may it be in a public θέατρον or privately, of course always read out loudly. Keywords: Michael Psellos, Chronogaphia – historiography – orality/aurality. "

Returning to a formative moment in the discourse of performance studies with a glancing dialogue between Richard Schechner and Michael Goldman, this article traces a series of efforts by Benjamin Bennett, Herbert Blau, Elin Diamond, and Stanton Garner, among others, to seize the work of dramatic performance as performance and to develop a critical vocabulary that understands dramatic theatre as an encounter with writing rather than as a reinscription of the archive.

Abstract:
In recent years a debate has been taking place among historians of Nazism about the role played by the concept of Volksgemeinschaft (Popular community) in the Third Reich. Though historians agree on the general relevance of this ideal for the National Socialist regime, the debate revolves around the question, whether this concept can be also useful employed for understanding material, political and social processes. Three German historians - Michael Wildt, Hans Mommsen and Ulrich Herbert - present their argumentations in favour or against the use of the concept of Volksgemeinschaft in this sense. Their stances imply different evaluations of how extensive and intense was the participation of the ordinary Germans in Nazi policy.

For the beat generation of the 1940s and 1950s, dissertation time is here. Magazine and newspaper critics have gotten in their jabs. Now scholars are starting to analyze the literature and legacy of the beat writers. In the last few years biographers have lined up to interpret the lives of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs, and publishers have rushed into print a host of beat journals, letters, memoirs, and anthologies. The most recent Dictionary of Literary Biography devotes two large volumes to sixty-seven beat writers, including Neal Cassady, Herbert Huncke, Gary Snyder, Gregory Corso, John Clellon Holmes, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Philip Lamantia, Peter Orlovsky, Michael McClure, and Philip Whalen.

Abstract:
While recognizing that H.L.A. Hart’s The Concept of Law has exerted a powerful and continuing influence on general jurisprudence, Brian Simpson finds it wanting. Simpson argues that Hart’s determination to make broad generalizations about the nature of a legal system deflected him from the important task of attending to the particularities of actually-existing law. Moreover, he identifies Hart as a ‘hedgehog’ in Isaiah Berlin’s sense: a thinker whose work gives expression to a ‘single central vision’ (in Hart’s case, law as a system of rules). This critique of Hart leads Simpson to argue for an approach to legal philosophy that is more attentive to the details of existing legal systems. But Simpson fails to present his readers with the theoretical approach for which he argues. This essay seeks to make good this deficiency in his response to The Concept of Law. To this end, it uses the writings of two philosophers on whom Simpson draws (Berlin and Michael Oakeshott) with the aim of enriching Hart’s contribution to general jurisprudence. Moreover, it finds in this Hart-Oakeshott-Berlin-based interdisciplinary theory (HOBBIT) a basis on which to throw much light on Britain as a distinctive form of politico-legal life.

Abstract:
Herbert Bauer, known to the world as Béla Balázs (1894–1949), led the sort of life about which contemporary intellectuals might fantasize. He knew everyone and he did everything. Born in Hungary, he included György Lukács, Karl Mannheim, Arnold Hauser, Béla Bartók, and Zoltán Kodály in his circle, among others. He knew the filmmakers Alexander Korda and Michael Curtiz before their names were Anglicized. He studied with Georg Simmel and met Max Weber. As time went on, he came, so it seems, to know virtually every major European intellectual—Stefan Zweig, Robert Musil, Walter Benjamin, Sergei Eisenstein, Erwin Piscator, and on and on. He lived in the midst of a universe of conversation that dazzles us as we look back enviously upon it.

Abstract:
This article explores the ways in which Irish historiography has been shaped by paramilitary violence, counter-insurgency and the intimate, close-quarter killings that characterized the Troubles. Irish historiography, as a professional or academic enterprise, had long been committed to ideals of impartiality influenced by Herbert Butterfield and Michael Oakeshott. It was also acutely conscious of its proximity to violent political upheaval, and during the 1970s would display a heightened sense of the urgency of dispassionate historical inquiry. Prominent scholars believed that professional research would dispel the ‘myths’ that sustained the gunmen of the Provisional IRA. In the aftermath of the Good Friday Agreement, however, historians face the challenge of explaining the militant republicanism which they had previously sought to defuse. This article considers several recent analyses of the Provisional movement. It reveals the extent to which the most vociferous criticism of the Provisionals descends from the far Left of republicanism itself — from those who belonged to the Official IRA or its successor organization the Workers’ Party, or from the ‘dissident’ republicans of the 1990s.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to computer graphics as the main type of computer visual art. It gives a historical review of the origin of computer graphics. The first artists in computer graphics are: Ben Laposki, Herbert Franke, Michael Noll, Friederich Nake, Charles Xuri, Harold Cohen. The concepts of pencil, charcoal, computer graphics, computer art, engraving, etching, linocut are covered. A comparative analysis of traditional graphic art and computer graphics is conducted. The article provides a brief historical overview of graphite, Italian and lead pencils and focuses on the imitation of traditional graphic tools in graphic editors. It is emphasized that hatchings modelling plays a special role in imitation of pencil drawing technique by means of computer graphics, as well as in traditional drawing. The shading modelling methods developed by software artists Cortez, Yamamoto, Herzmann, Litvinovich, Shiraishi, and Yamaguchi are described. The popularity of engravings in illustrating books and periodicals is noted. A classification of printed graphics by type and production technique is carried out. The article provides an overview of the main imitation filters for all types of engraving. In particular, such filters as "Engraver", "Cutline" Linocut are considered.

Abstract:
It is not easy to summarize what this book is about, except to say that it is an exploration of a variety of themes and a variety of authors on the role of language in the practice of law, the role of theories of language in legal theory, and how all this bears on “the problems of legal determinacy.” By the latter we are to understand problems having to do with whether the law always, almost always, or never provides uniquely correct answers to legal questions like “Does the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms invalidate the Federal government’s ban on tobacco advertising?” or “Is this defendant guilty of defamatory libel?” The works of several authors are discussed, with emphasis placed on Wittgenstein, Friedrich Waismann, Herbert Hart, Ronald Dworkin, Michael Moore, and Lon Fuller. As with the writings of Wittgenstein, who serves as Bix’s philosophical inspiration, it is not always abundantly clear what the discussions all add up to. Nevertheless, it is possible to distil from Bix’s somewhat unfocused discussions the following central themes. These, as Bix himself notes, are linked by nothing stronger than “family resemblance.”

Abstract:
After a five-month sojourn in Rome, the author Henry James departed with “an acquired passion for the place.” The year was 1873, and he wrote eloquently of his ardor, expressing appreciation for the beauty in the “solemn vistas” of the Vatican, the “gorgeous” Gesù church, and the “wondrous” Villa Madama. Such were the impressions of a Bostonian who spent much of his adult life in Europe. By contrast, in June of 1885, the young Boston architect Herbert Langford Warren wrote to his brother about how he was “glad to be out of Italy.” He had just concluded a four-month tour there. He had also visited England and France, and he was convinced that the architecture and sculpture of those countries were superior to what he had seen in Italy, although he admired Italian Renaissance painting. When still in Rome, he told his brother how disagreeable he found the “Renaissance architecture in Italy contemporary with Michael Angelo and later under Palladio and Vignola,” preferring the work of English architects Inigo Jones and Wren. Warren appreciated some aspects of the Italian buildings of the 15th and early 16th centuries, but he considered the grandeur and opulence of later Renaissance architecture especially distasteful.

Weiser, Martin R., Taine T. V. Pechet, Julian P. Williams, Minghe Ma, Paul S. Frenette, Francis D. Moore, Lester Kobzik, Richard O. Hines, Denisa D. Wagner, Michael C. Carroll, and Herbert B. Hechtman. Experimental murine acid aspiration injury is mediated by neutrophils and the alternative complement pathway. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(4): 1090–1095, 1997.—Acid aspiration may result in the development of the acute respiratory distress syndrome, an event associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Although once attributed to direct distal airway injury, the pulmonary failure after acid aspiration is more complex and involves an inflammatory injury mediated by complement (C) and polymorphonuclear leukocytes. This study examines the injurious inflammatory cascades that are activated after acid aspiration. The role of neutrophils was defined by immunodepletion before aspiration, which reduced injury by 59%. The injury was not modified in either P- or E-selectin-knockout mice, indicating that these adhesion molecules were not operative. C activation after aspiration was documented with immunochemistry by C3 deposition on injured alveolar pneumocytes. Animals in which C activation was inhibited with soluble C receptor type 1 (sCR1) had a 54% reduction in injury, similar to the level of protection seen in C3-knockout mice (58%). However C4-knockout mice were not protected from injury, indicating that C activation is mediated by the alternative pathway. Finally, an additive effect of neutrophils and C was demonstrated whereby neutropenic animals that were treated with sCR1 showed an 85% reduction in injury. Thus acid aspiration injury is mediated by neutrophils and the alternative C pathway.

Abstract:
As Michael Foucault had said that the human body is not really free; the concept of the body as well as the concept of the human sexuality in fact are ruled by and obey the great power behind them. A great narrative about the body and also the sexuality that has been agreed by societies, consciously or unconsciously has successfully dictated societies’ point of view in placing their body and sexuality. The concept of a male body that has been characterized by its perfunctory appearance, in the sense of not necessary to primp, actually is a great narrative that is considered as a true necessity. This topic is unique and interesting to study because Mister International pageant as the representation of world’s male masculinity offers the different great narrative masculinity concept that has been shackling the traditional masculinity concept of Indonesian society. This study will analyze the signs of masculinity shown in Mister International pageant as the ideal men’s quest in the world. The result of this study indicates that the ideal male masculinity constructed in Mister International pageant if viewed from the concept of traditional sexuality is a combination between the concept of femininity and the concept of masculinity that then brought out to a new terminology about the concept of masculinity called as metrosexual. The concept of masculinity constructed by this ideal men’s quest in the world, if examined by Herbert Marcuse’s point of view, actually is a concept uniformity of the world's ideal male body in one dimension. Furthermore, the great narrative behind this uniformed ideal male construction is a world’s major capitalists’ project to expand their market share, especially male cosmetics and clothes products. Keywords: Construction, Masculinity, Ideal Male Body, One-Dimensional Man.
