Full textIt is the philosophical and cultural connotations, extra-theretical and often tacit, underling polemical ans immediate argumentative contextes, that establish the inner-coherence of the overall paradigm of Marcuse's thought. Following that assumption, the present thesis wishes to decipher the fundamental Marcusian esthetic concepts art and nature, dialectically related to the idea of reason - as being sedimented and concretely mediated by cultural, affirmative, traditions of art-works themselves. Antagonistic and redemptive at the same time, this correlation of art, nature and reason, thus constitues for Marcuse a normative ground where Kantian, early Marxian and Freudian notions art explicitely coalesced towards a critic of existing social- political modes on the one hand, and setting the limites of utopian thought and praxis on the other hand. The essential duality of art, that of mimetic, cognitive nega negativity, and distanced, cathartic affirmativity, accounts for the antinomies inherent in the desublimations and destructurations of modern art. Finally, the present thesis considers the Marcusian classicist concept of art, together with the antinomies of modernity which that concept arises, in the light of post-modern conceptions, thus tracing hermeneutical gaps inherent in this esthetic-ethnic theory, no less than its continuing relevance

The following work is inserted in the Education area, focusing specifically on Philosophy of Education. Thus, we start from an essentially conceptual biographical research in order to demonstrate some contributions of Herbert Marcuse’s concepts to the study of Education. We also strived to perform a dialogue between Marcuse’s work and other authors from the critical tradition such as Kant, Hegel and Marx, and Frankfurtians as Adorno, Horkheimer and Benjamin, to comprehend their interpretations about the political, ideological, economical and cultural contexts of their time so we can analyze our own context to keep ourselves open and updated to dialogues and problematization. Starting from this contextual and conceptual analysis we were able to insert the “educational problem” in it and analyze it under the Critical Theory of Society point of view, focusing on understanding the existing context and its possibilities. Through this dialectical perspective between the comprehension of a wide domination and coordination context – with the reduction of thinking and behavior to what is imposed – and the possibilities of a qualitative change, we are able to foresee where to fit the possibilities of education. Under this dialectic between pessimism and the performance of the utopia, we try to point out the possibilities of an education for emancipation and autonomy formation not as unperformable potentialities, but as starting points of possible paths. In this work we were able to perceive, analyzing Marcuse’s texts and other Frankfurtian author as well as keeping in mind the necessary updates, that an education for emancipation and autonomy formation are inserted in Marcuse’s “end of utopia”, that is, real possibilities of qualitative change, but ones that have been constantly stopped by forces that look forward the maintenance of a reality established through thinking and behavior reduction to only one dimension ...

After the second half of 1940’s a new form of Capitalism took shape in the United States of America. And because of World War II, a considerable share of technology developed during the war was improved and directed towards wealth gain. The tremendous sums of capital invested in high technology and specialized labor became the matrix responsible for generating changes that affected American society throughout. From these changes came the need of organized enterprise and prevision of products costs and their demand, so the market instability would not jeopardize all investments. In the midst of all needs and changes private financial initiative forms alliance with the State, the responsible for regulating wages and product prices, thus promoting the development of a massive tool of persuasion and incentives of products selling. All changes became the main target for intricate debates, criticism, and arguments. Among the most important published works dealing with modern capitalism in the United States is Eros and Civilization, and, Studies in the Ideology of Advanced Industrial Society, both by Herbert Marcuse. This research project aimed to analyze both of Marcuse publishing’s and identify the body of originality of his own views on North American society as a product of this new form of capitalism in the 1950’s. It is notorious and established that all methods and paths Marcuse built to reach his ways of thinking gave an entire new perspective on American society, projecting the author and his theories into the most various social niches worldwide.

Herbert Marcuse was the author of a controversial critique of the thesis of the neutrality of technology and science, presented mainly in his book published in 1964, One-Dimensional Man: studies in the ideology of advanced industrial society. The aim of the work is an understanding of that critique, and it is divided into three parts. The first one deals with the influence that the philosophical discussions of the 1940 s and 1950 s had on the development of the theme in Marcuse s thought. The second part is a study of the origins of the critique of neutrality in texts written by Marcuse in his youth that brings to light the very peculiar way he articulates philosophy and Marxism, which in turn, as it is shown in the third part, leads to a severe criticism of the advanced industrial societies. The approach to technique, science and politics that follows from that double philosophic and social conception is the basis for the structuring of Marcuse s thought.

The present dissertation mainly aims at analyzing the concept of utopia in the work of Herbert Marcuse, taking as a guiding hypothesis the assertion that the faith Modernity has in the progress brought by clarification seems to have faded and therewith the great projects of social emancipation will no longer find a place in directing political struggles in modern times. This hypothesis will be analyzed in the light of Marcusean thinking, perceiving it as a consequence of what the author denominated one dimensional society, a social configuration, product of the development of Modernity, which has been able to absorb all forms of thinking that are contrary to it and impose itself as the only reality possible. Thus, the issue that directs the development of this master s thesis is the endeavor to clarify the philosophical status that the concept of utopia occupies in Herbet Marcuse's thinking, which has close ties with Hegelian Dialectics, as well as the correlation between utopic thinking and political action from the perspective of the Frankfurt philosopher

This work falls within the framework of theoretical research in the field of the philosophical foundations of critical education. The problem of research concerns the challenges that the concepts of technology and culture, present in the Herbert Marcuse‟s reflections, could provide to the critical theory of education today. The reflection revolves around the formation processes from their relationship with technology, specifically with Internet. Starts on Herbert Marcuse‟s philosophical foundation, on culture and technology concepts in the book One-Dimensional Man and in the articles About the culture’s affirmative character and Comments to a redefinition on the culture’s concept. The hypothesis is that the concepts developed by the author – in dialogue with socially constituted phenomena as well as emerging – go against the grain of the logic of hegemonic technical-instrumental rationality. Takes as its starting point the literature review whose results reveals the relevance and interest by this theme in the educational field and also notes the paucity of jobs from Marcuse‟s critical philosophy, both national as international sources. By the critical analysis of accessed works is possible to infer that technology, mediated by Internet, can also cause the use to impoverish and reduce ways to perceive and signify events, relationships, projections and possibilities, and can change the character of subjectivity through appropriation processes of damaged evidence of memory and culture. Combined with advertising and self-promotion techniques, these elements corroborates to configure and applicate the one-dimensional cognitive design inside people, comfortably surrendered to the society‟s logic that produces it. The potential use of technological tools free of technical-instrumental rationality design that overlaps the sensitive and loving facet of human life – typical of late capitalism of advanced industrial societies –, can reverse the movement of intellectual technological and political organization, of conquest and manipulation of negative thinking, the unhappy consciousness, freedoms, needs, desires, ways of managing free time, projection living standards which together curtail movements to social change

Full textThe development of Herbert Marcuse’s thought can be understood as the result of an effort to look for a ground for critique other than Reason, the cornerstone of philosophical thought. From his initial adhesion to the Hegelian inspirations of critical theory until the overturning of their foundations during World War II, Marcuse stubbornly refused to temper his observations on the weakening ability to reject the establishment in advanced industrial societies while still searching for that which could, “from the inside”, harbor potential for transformation. Marcuse strives indeed to avoid the inherent aporias of his radical critique of Reason by searching for a dimension of human existence still capable of resisting its totalitarian integration to late capitalism. Through an incursion into the modern understanding of Reason and its Marcusian critique, our study thereby aims to determine if a theoretical alternative exists within Marcuse’s thought for a socio-critical standpoint that no longer relies on the traditional grounds of Reason. Three “moments” of Marcuse’s thought will be analyzed: firstly, his theoretical involvement in favor of a “rational organization of society”, where Marcuse’s ties to Hegel and the original project of critical theory appear more clearly; secondly, his critique of Reason, where Marcuse moves away from this modern ideal and exposes the link that inextricably relates Reason to the “logic of domination”; and, lastly, his sketch of the possibility of establishing another form of rationality rooted in the field of sensibility.

Abstract: Considering the relevance of Freudian's psychoanalysis in the Herbert Marcuse's masterpiece, it is to rebuild three moments of society's critical theory engendered by the philosopher, registering, on the one hand , the psychoanalysis statute in each of them, and, by the other hand , the limits and the legacy from the perspective Marcuse's conference in 1963, Obsolescence of Psycho-Analysis, which affirms that psychoanalysis would be aged. For that, we turn especially to how Marcuse focuses the repression's themes in late capitalist society, on which will search as well as the emancipation possibilities glimpsed from the odd reading and Freudian categories's historicizing carried out by the philosopher. Key-words: critical theory, psychoanalysis, repression, emancipation

Abstract: This paper aims to critically examine the concepts of diversity and tolerance, present in the proposed education policies in the world, published since 1990 and that influence educational policies. The aim is to think about these concepts related to the structure of capitalist society in the process of globalization, focusing upon theoretical/historical analysis their meaning and relevance in contemporary times. This is a bibliographic search and document analysis that, besides the resumption of the historical and philosophical concepts, proposes to make an analysis of its impact on global reports and documents on education published by UNESCO. The text is divided into three parts: the first, we try to make up a resume of the historical defense of tolerance in the birth of modernity, bringing authors such as Las Casas, Locke, Voltaire and Mill. This return is to understand the philosophical underpinnings of political and social changes that marked the liberal defense of tolerance, identifying similarities and differences of this defense with the resurgence of the concept of the need for tolerance in XX and XXI centuries; the second part presents the critical reflections of Marcuse, relating the concepts of diversity and tolerance with the promises of freedom, autonomy, among others, into society without opposition. Marcuse questioned the tolerance of a critical point of view, stressing its ideological aspect, in tune with an oppressive society. The author considers the limitations, ambiguities and internal contradictions of the concept and related to the society in which it is, coming to denounce as false and regressive the pure tolerance, because no attention to the intolerable to human progress; under the reference of Marcuse, the the third part comes with the analysis of documents dealing with diversity and tolerance from the post-war. More specifically are discussed the report Education: A Treasure Within, the Declaration on the principles of tolerance and the Declaration on cultural diversity and also the discussions raised at the Conference on tolerance in Latin America and the Caribbean and the Conference on Education for Tolerance in Lisbon. From this analysis, the paper deals fading debate over tolerance in UNESCO documents and discussions about education in the world that succeeded the effervescence of this issue in the 1990. We come to the conclusion that, in order not to ignore the criticisms made, at the same time, without abandoning the idea of tolerance as a concept matrix of UNESCO, preserves the concept in the form of a discussion less emphatic. Softens up the debate about tolerance by gradual insertion of fewer conflicting issues such as respect for diversity, protection of assets and the issue of human rights. It is understood that tolerance is an ambiguous and contradictory concept, however, not overcome, remaining in academic debate, documents in the world, educational practices and common sense, which makes, however, required his constant questioning and criticism, diverting is a consensual and ideological sense for a critical sense and progressive.

Full textThe present work aims to debate the insertion of the drive theory in Herbert Marcuses thinking, as per, more specifically, this authors work Eros and Civilization: a philosophical inquiry into Freud published in 1955. Approximately three decades before this Marcuses publication, Freud had published a work which articulated his thinking as a whole: the essay on the hypothesis of the death drive. The great repercussion of the former work, in both clinical and cultural terms, made psychoanalysis advance in themes such as masochism, compulsion to repetition, crowd psychology and destructivity, besides having discussed human cultural development within its possibility of guaranteeing communal life in the face of a drive, which goes beyond pleasure principle. Nevertheless, the approach of this new concept provoked many reviews in the psychoanalysis area one of which we can highlight. Questions related to socialism were examined, as they referred to the immutability of the condition of the death drive. However, the proposals of this Neo-Freudian Revisionism which tried to merge Marxism and psychoanalysis, terminated in the extirpation of the theory of drives and generated an opposed movement to the previously accepted eroticization of psychoanalysis. As Marcuses work criticized such a popular trend at that time, it renewed the dilemma: how to insert metapsychology, particularly the death drive concept, in the context of the researches carried out in the Institute of Social Research of Frankfurt which was fundamentally Marxist? The author reallocated psychoanalysis in the midst of critical debate on culture, and also renewed another inquiry that is linked to the death drive: would the relationship between dominance and progress really constitute the principle of civilization? In this context, this research discussed the following points to clarify the echoes of the drive theory in Marcuses thinking: a) by trying to elucidate Marcusean critical theory to the Neo- Freudian culturalist schools; b) by analyzing some elements in the concept of death drive in Freuds work; c) ultimately, by understanding the outcome of death drive in Eros and Civilization: a philosophical inquiry into Freud. Furthermore, we can point out that Marcuse focused the debate about culture on the conflict between the principles of pleasure and reality. Still, the author did not discredit death drive itself in his analysis, but its mechanisms in a reality led by performance principle if compared to the previously referred drives action conducted by a beyond the performance principle, as the death drive would be nonexpressive after tension had been released. Also, the conclusion of that book was examined, as death drive is not only tension release. Moreover, that work insisted on the point that the dynamics of civilization can be considered a denial of the individual. The proposition of a utopia was questioned afterwards by the author himself.
