Abstract:
Radiation-induced enteritis is frequently observed following radiotherapy for cancer or occurs due to radiation exposure in a nuclear accident. The loss of the epithelial integrity leads to ‘leaky gut’, so recovery of damaged epithelium is an important strategy in therapeutic trials. Centella asiatica (CA), a traditional herbal medicine, is widely used for wound healing by protecting against endothelial damage. In this study, we investigated the radio-mitigating effect of CA, focusing on the crosstalk between endothelial and epithelial cells. CA treatment relieved radiation-induced endothelial dysfunction and mitigated radiation-induced enteritis. In particular, treatment of the conditioned media from CA-treated irradiated endothelial cells recovered radiation-induced epithelial barrier damage. We also determined that epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a critical factor secreted by CA-treated irradiated endothelial cells. Treatment with EGF effectively improved the radiation-induced epithelial barrier dysfunction. We also identified the therapeutic effects of CA-induced endothelial paracrine in a radiation-induced enteritis mouse model with epithelial barrier restoration. Otherwise, CA treatment did not show radioprotective effects on colorectal tumors in vivo. We showed therapeutic effects of CA on radiation-induced enteritis, with the recovery of endothelial and epithelial dysfunction. Thus, our findings suggest that CA is an effective radio-mitigator against radiation-induced enteritis.

Background: Enterococcus faecalis is associated with different forms of periradicular diseases, both primary and persistence endodontic infections. Traditional herbals have high antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and biocompatible properties that make their use in dentistry more extensive. Judicious use of these herbal formulations has been found to mitigate the E.faecalis count. Aim: To compare the effect of various irrigants with herbal formulations in reducing Enterococcus faecalis count Materials and methods: Different herbal formulated irrigants were procured commercially. The test organism E.faecalis was isolated and maintained in the Nutrient Agar Slope at 4 degree C. Different concentrations of herbal irrigants were mixed with BHI agar and 50μL of the test organisms were added and poured into sterile petri dishes. Lawn culture of the test bacteria was made on the Plates and incubated at 37 degree C for 24 hrs and the colony forming units(CFU) were counted and recorded. Result: In this present study, comparing all 3 samples there is a higher reduction of count in Sample 3 (Cardamom and Tulsi mediated) than Sample 1 and Sample 2. Conclusion: Based on the results presented, it is possible to conclude that the herbal formulations represent a good reduction of Enterococcus faecalis.

Mencermati permasalahan tersebut, maka perlu dilakukan edukasi pemanfaatan bahan-bahan herbal untuk meningkatkan imunitas tubuh. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi tentang jenis-jenis bahan herbal dan manfaatnya serta melakukan pelatihan pembuatan minuman herbal untuk mitigasi Covid 19. Setelah Kegiatan pengabdian ini selesai dilakukan, diharapkan peserta pelatihan mengetahui berbagai jenis bahan herbal serta manfaatnya dan mampu mengolah bahan-bahan tersebut menjadi minuman herbal. Ada lima tahapan yang dilakukan dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini, yaitu: observasi dan pengurusan izin pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada kepala desa, sosialisasi jenis-jenis bahan herbal dan manfaatnya bagi kesehatan, praktek pembuatan minuman herbal, evaluasi terhadap kegiatan pengabdian yang telah dilakukan dan pemberian bantuan bibit tanaman herbal. Dari hasil evaluasi terhadap kegiatan pengabdian yang telah dilakukan terlihat bahwa pengetahuan peserta pelatihan terhadap jenis, manfaat dan cara pembuatan minumam herbal semakin meningkat. ABSTRACTThe main problem which was the Simpang Wie Village community during the Covid 19 outbreak as it is today is the lack of public knowledge about the mitigation of the Covid 19 outbreak, expensive and difficult to obtain multivitamins and a low economic level. Observing this problem, it is necessary to educate on the use of herbs ingredients to increase body immunity. This community service activity aims to provide information about the types of herbs ingredients and their benefits and conduct training in making herbs drinks to mitigate Covid 19. After this service activity is completed, it is hoped that the training participants will see various types of herbs ingredients and their benefits and be able to process these ingredients these ingredients become herbs drinks. There are five stages carried out in this service activity, namely: observing and obtaining permits for the implementation of community service activities to the village head, socializing the types of herbs ingredients and their health benefits, the practice of making herbs drinks, evaluating community service activities that have been carried out and providing assistance for herbs plant seeds. From the results of the evaluation of the service activities that have been carried out, there has been an increase in the knowledge of the training participants on the types, benefits and ways of making herbs drinks. Abstract:
<p>Aluminium chloride (AlCl<sub>3</sub>) is neurotoxic and has been proposed to be one of the environmental factors responsible for neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disorders. It also causes learning and memory deficit. <em>Bacopa monniera</em> is well known for its memory enhancing property in traditional Indian system of medicine. In the present investigation we aim to evaluate cognitive-enhancing and neuromodulatory property of brahmi herbal drink (BHD), a nutraceutical product from <em>Bacopa monniera</em> extract. BHD was evaluated for physicochemical, sensory attributes and stability studies. Overall acceptability of BHD was good according to hedonic scale/ratings. Stability of the drink is for 6 months without losing its activity. Further, cognitive enhancing and neuromodulatory propensity of BHD was evaluated against AlCl<sub>3</sub> treatment in rats. Administration of AlCl<sub>3</sub> (100 mg/kg) daily for 23 days significantly increased cognitive impairment as evaluated in elevated plus maze (EPM) and Morris water maze (MWM) tests. BHD supplementation improved cognitive ability by decreasing the transfer and escape latency of EPM and MWM tests respectively. Our results further elucidate that BHD supplementation decreased acetylcholine esterase activity and nitric oxide levels by down-regulating AChE and iNOS expression respectively. BHD supplementation showed it neuroprotective efficacy by up-regulating BDNF expression. AlCl<sub>3</sub> induced lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species generation was significantly alleviated by BHD and restored antioxidant status levels. All these results demonstrated the cognitive-enhancing and neuromodulatory potential of BHD in counteracting the damage inflicted by AlCl<sub>3</sub> on rat brain.</p>

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to establish poultry liver injury model induced by (CCl4) and seek effective hepatoprotective herbals for clinical application. Different doses of CCl4dissolved in vegetable oil (1 : 1,V/V) were injected via pectoral muscle to induce acute liver injury model in chickens. An herbal formula, Longyin decoction, was prepared for hepatoprotection test on chicken acute liver injury models. The pathologic changes of the liver were observed, and the activities of ALT and AST were, respectively, detected to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of Longyin decoction on chickens. The chicken acute liver injury model was successfully established by injecting CCl4via pectoral muscle. The best dose of CCl4inducing chicken liver injury was 4.0 mL/kg·BW (body weight). The results of qualitative determination by HPTLC showed that the components of Longyin decoction containedGentian, Capillaries, Gardenia,andBupleurum root. In the high-dose Longyin group and the middle-dose Longyin group, the pathological changes of the damaged liver were mitigated and the activities of ALT and AST in serum were reduced significantly. Longyin decoction has obvious hepatoprotective effect on acute liver injury induced by CCl4.

Lemon balm and corn silk are valuable medicinal herbs, which exhibit variety of beneficial effects for human health. The present study explored the anti-obesity effects of a mixture of lemon balm and corn silk extracts (M-LB/CS) by comparison with the effects of single herbal extracts in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in mice. HFD supplementation for 84 days increased the body weight, the fat mass density, the mean diameter of adipocytes, and the thickness of fat pads. However, oral administration of M-LB/CS significantly alleviated the HFD-mediated weight gain and adipocyte hypertrophy without affecting food consumption. Of the various combination ratios of M-LB/CS tested, the magnitude of the decreases in weight gain and adipocyte hypertrophy by administration of 1:1, 1:2, 2:1, and 4:1 (w/w) M-LB/CS was more potent than that by single herbal extracts alone. In addition, M-LB/CS reduced the HFD-mediated increases in serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein, prevented the reduction in serum high-density lipoprotein, and facilitated fecal excretion of cholesterol and triglyceride. Moreover, M-LB/CS mitigated the abnormal changes in specific mRNAs associated with lipogenesis and lipolysis in the adipose tissue. Furthermore, M-LB/CS reduced lipid peroxidation by inhibiting the HFD-mediated reduction in glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. Therefore, M-LB/CS is a promising herbal mixture for preventing obesity.

Long-term sequelae refer to persistent symptoms or signs for >6 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The most common symptoms of sequelae are fatigue and neuropsychiatric symptoms (concentration difficulty, amnesia, cognitive dysfunction, anxiety, and depression). However, approved treatments have not been fully established. Herbal medicines are administered for 12 weeks to patients who continuously complain of fatigue or cognitive dysfunction for >4 weeks that only occurred after COVID-19 diagnoses. Based on the Korean Medicine syndrome differentiation diagnosis, patients with fatigue will be administered Bojungikgi-tang or Kyungok-go, whereas those with cognitive dysfunction will be administered Cheonwangbosim-dan. Results could support evidence that herbal medicines may mitigate fatigue and cognitive dysfunction caused by COVID-19. Furthermore, by investigating the effects of herbal medicines on changes in metabolite and immune response due to COVID-19, which may be responsible for sequelae, the potential of herbal medicines as one of the therapeutic interventions for post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection can be evaluated. Therefore, the effects of herbal medicine on fatigue and cognitive dysfunction sequelae due to COVID-19 will be elucidated in this study to provide an insight into the preparation of medical management for the post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Antibiotics have been used since several decades to treat patients from infectious diseases which altogether have resulted in reduced illness and death. The use of these antibiotics in patient care has been massivelyfavorable, when prescribed and taken correctly. However, these drugs have been used so widely and for a prolonged time, which the infectious organisms have adapted to them, making the drugs less effective. Several categories of drug resistant bacteria are now-a- days used in medical literature to characterize the different patterns of resistance spread found in healthcare-associated, antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. These patterns of resistance are acquired through mutation and horizontal gene transfer. Articulation of the drug resistance has led to such situations where, harmful bacteria once controlled through antibiotics are now virtually uncontrollable. As a result of emergence of multidrug resistant microbes, new alternatives are continually being searched, that could overcome the development of multi-drug resistance and hence aid in the suitable treatment of infectious diseases. Therapy involving combinations of antimicrobials exhibiting multiple target sites are being used as an alternative by the medical practitioners to curb drug resistance. Parallel to these therapies, herbal plants have contributed immensely in managing microbial infections, as herbal medicaments contain various antimicrobial constituents like tannins, terpenoids, alkaloids and flavonoids . Hence, herbal plants have been considered as an innovative remedy for the Department of Biotechnology, Delhi Technological Universitymanagement of diseases which have been associated with antibiotic resistant microbes. Also a country like India, where folk medicinal literatures like Ayurveda, Unani have been followed since ages, has no dearth of medicinal plants which are a starting framework for remedial agents, being used for maintaining human health, supported by medical benefits and cultural believes.

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasingly used by patients nowadays. The pooled prevalence of CAM use is about 51%. Many types of CAM have been practiced by patients with diabetes. Some of them showed promising results on blood glucose and other cardiometabolic parameters such as blood pressure, body mass, and lipid profile. This chapter explores two main types of CAM: Herbs and mind–body therapy. Different types of mind–body therapy and plants, plant extracts, and herbal substances have been utilized for an extended period and are sometimes favored by many individuals with T2D. Those practices and compounds found in these natural remedies are believed to have the potential to benefit the body in several ways, including the reduction of symptoms, alleviation of pain, and promotion of overall health. This chapter includes a summary of the findings of the available systematic reviews and meta-analyses regarding the most used medicinal herbs and body–mind therapies. In conclusion, as some of these interventions are promising, it is unclear to what extent glucose metabolism and certain substances can help mitigate complications in late-stage diabetes. Healthcare providers should be aware about them.

Diet-derived phytochemicals find prominent use in traditional medicine and have been credited with lowering cancer risk significantly. Dietary agents demonstrate anticancer activity by modulating various molecular targets and cell signaling pathways. Several studies have focused on combinations of dietary bioactive compounds and conventional chemotherapeutic agents to augment their therapeutic response and mitigate the side effects of conventional chemotherapy. The observed synergistic response heralds promise for successful future chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic strategies in cancer management. Animal models and pre-clinical trials of the effective combinations must be undertaken to clearly understand the mechanism of action. This chapter catalogues recent studies that have used dietary bioactive compounds (sulforaphane, EGCG, curcumin, genistein, resveratrol, eugenol) in combination with conventional chemopreventive agents and with other phytochemicals.

A global shift away from diets dominated by meat, dairy and eggs to mainly plant-based diets is as necessary in mitigating anthropogenic climate change as the shift away from fossil fuels. Yet a large awareness gap exists about animal agriculture's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Recent studies in Australia and the United States show this issue is represented in less than 1 percent of all newspaper articles about climate change. This chapter examines the opportunities and barriers in addressing the livestock sector's impact on climate change. Policy recommendations in the literature are compared with the responses of governments, industry and the NGO sector. Australia's unique socioeconomic and cultural ties to livestock production and the consumption of animal products represent a significant barrier to demand-side mitigation. An analysis of newspaper articles mentioning animal agriculture's link to climate change in The Sydney Morning Herald between 2006 and 2014 provides insights into the facilitation and shaping of public awareness on the issue to date. The findings can inform strategies to increase future media coverage and encourage a more engaged discourse on demand-side mitigation.

Abstract:
A global shift away from diets dominated by meat, dairy and eggs to mainly plant-based diets is as necessary in mitigating anthropogenic climate change as the shift away from fossil fuels. Yet a large awareness gap exists about animal agriculture's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Recent studies in Australia and the United States show this issue is represented in less than 1 percent of all newspaper articles about climate change. This chapter examines the opportunities and barriers in addressing the livestock sector's impact on climate change. Policy recommendations in the literature are compared with the responses of governments, industry and the NGO sector. Australia's unique socioeconomic and cultural ties to livestock production and the consumption of animal products represent a significant barrier to demand-side mitigation. An analysis of newspaper articles mentioning animal agriculture's link to climate change in The Sydney Morning Herald between 2006 and 2014 provides insights into the facilitation and shaping of public awareness on the issue to date. The findings can inform strategies to increase future media coverage and encourage a more engaged discourse on demand-side mitigation.

Abstract Following a review of the research on the economic implications of divorce, Anat Herbst-Debby, Amit Kaplan, and Miri Endeweld report on how changes in social policy over the last two decades affected the income and housing of divorced families in Israel. Their analysis reveals that the years following the 2003 welfare reforms were accompanied by large cuts in child allowances and income support allowances, as well as reductions in housing assistance. Examining the changing circumstances of men and women after divorce, they found the economic situation of divorced women worse than that of the rest of the Israeli population, and usually worse than that of divorced men. Although the authors note research suggesting that social policy can help to mitigate the negative economic consequences of divorce, they find this was not the experience of the 21st-century policy reforms in Israel.

Extreme, regional droughts are the most common form of disturbance in semiarid ecosystems typified by relatively slow recovery rates. Drought-driven impacts can include regionally synchronized insect outbreaks, wildfires, and tree mortality (Swetnam and Betancourt 1990), as well as disastrous failures of agriculture, silviculture, and livestock production (Mainguet 1994). Drought conditions, accompanied by anthropogenic land mismanagement, have led to subsequent invasions of grasslands and farmlands by woody shrubs and nonnative forbs and grasses, contributing to the modern “desertification” process manifested in many parts of the world (Archer et al. 1988). In the American Southwest, the drought of the 1950s was one of the most severe climate events of the past millennium because of wide ramifications for the region’s ecology (Herbel et al. 1972; Swetnam and Betancourt 1998), water resources (Thomas 1963), and economy (Regensberg 1996). As human population and resource needs increase in the Southwest, so will the economic sensitivity to largescale drought. A clear understanding of extreme droughts is necessary not only to understand long-term ecosystem dynamics, but also to mitigate socioeconomic impacts. The goals of this chapter are to use the Sevilleta LTER site in central New Mexico to (1) quantify the decadal variability in precipitation inferred from a 394-year record of tree rings, (2) relate the repeated decadal fluctuations in precipitation to major droughts of the 1890s and 1950s, (3) assess the ecological responses associated with droughts of the last century, and (4) elucidate the biotic-atmospheric feed backs that may influence future responses. We assess the magnitude, timing, and consequences of decadal fluctuations in annual precipitation. The Sevilleta LTER research site is located at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), Socorro County, New Mexico (34º20' N, 106º50' W). The Sevilleta NWR comprises 100,000 ha of grassland, desert, and woodland bordered by two mountain ranges and the Rio Grande Valley in between. Elevations range from 1,350 m at the Rio Grande to 2,797 m at Ladrón Peak in the northwestern portion of the refuge. Topography, geology, soils, and hydrology, interacting with major air mass dynamics, provide a spatial and temporal template that makes the region a transition zone between several biomes. The region contains communities that both represent and intersect Great Plains Grassland, Great Basin Shrub-steppe, Chihuahuan Desert, Interior Chaparral, and Montane Coniferous Forest (Brown 1982).

Abstract Objectives/Scope Due to corrosive fluids being expected in the geothermal wells planned for the Champigny (Paris) district heating, fiberglass casing was used. It was deemed beneficial, if drilling operations could be performed with an exposed fiberglass casing, despite high expected wear. This paper will lay out how a feasible strategy was planned, utilizing advanced wear prediction techniques for drilling inside fiberglass casing. The study was conducted by CFG (compagnie Française de Géothermie) and funded by ADEME (Agence de la transition écologique) Methods To achieve an accurate wear prediction three parameters are required: (1) Trajectory and actual tortuosity (2) Wear factors (3) Operations (number of rotations and distance slided). Tortuosity was calibrated on offset wells (Aichinger, 2021) and expected operations were covered in scenario analyses. Wear factors were determined using field calibration and laboratory testing. The field calibration was performed on three offset wells using an internal diameter interpretation method in which the wear is measured against the most probable elliptical casing shape and herby allowing wear measurement avoiding bias error. (Aichinger, 2016) The laboratory tests were conducted in Mines ParisTech / Armines including different fiberglass types, protectors, sideforce amplitude, rotation speed and lubricant. Based on the derived parameters various drilling scenarios and the associated wear levels were simulated to decide on a drilling strategy. Results, Observations, Conclusions The main results are: The main conclusions are: Novel/Additive Information This paper should provide help to Engineers who plan to perform drilling operations inside fiberglass casing, mainly by providing Wear Factors, but also general guidelines on wear prediction and mitigation techniques.

The European Union (EU) has a long history of commitment to improving biological security and supporting multilateral approaches to arms controls and non-proliferation. It has supported various biosecurity programmes in recent years and continues to increase its financial support towards these, with a focus on the universalization of the Biological and Toxins Weapons Convention and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540. More recently, through Council Decision 2021/2072/ CFSP, the EU has committed even further to strengthening biosafety and biosecurity capabilities in Africa, with more meaningful collaboration and an increase in the local and regional ownership of projects. This provides an opportunity for the EU to continue to broaden its approach and improve coordination with international partners. In particular focus is the newly formed European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA), as it develops its international activities. However, there is still a demonstrated need to strengthen biosecurity-related capacities and capabilities across Africa. This paper highlights the significant opportunities for EU engagement and coordination with international initiatives, such as the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Biosafety and Biosecurity Initiative (BBI) 2021–2025 Strategic Plan and the Global Partnership Signature Initiative to Mitigate Biological Threats in Africa.
