Abstract:
AbstractObjectiveTo cross-validate three predictive set of equations for basal metabolic rate (BMR) developed by Schofield (Schofield database), Henry (Oxford database) and Cole (Oxford database) using mean values for age, weight, height and BMR of published studies.DesignLiterature review of studies published from 1985 to March 2002.SettingAll studies selected used appropriate methods and followed conditions that met the criteria established for basal metabolism, were performed in healthy adults, and were not part of the Schofield or Oxford database.SubjectsA total of 261 groups of men and women from 175 studies were selected and categorised in three age groups (18.5–29.9, 30.0–59.9, ≥60 years old) and three body mass index (BMI) groups (normal weight, overweight and obese).ResultsLinear regression and concordance correlation analysis showed that the three sets of equations had the same association and agreement with measured BMR, across gender, age, and BMI groups. The agreement of all equations was moderate for men and poor for women. The lowest mean squared prediction errors (MSPRs) were given by Henry equations in men and Cole equations in women. Henry and Cole equations gave lower values than Schofield equations, except for men over 60 years of age. Henry equations were the most accurate in men. None of the three equations performed consistently better in women.ConclusionThese results support the use of Henry equations in men with a wide range of age and BMI. None of the proposed predictive equations seem to be appropriate to estimate BMR in women.

Abstract:
This paper aims to present the plausibility of confronting the problem in philosophy in an intuitive way. We'll present elements of Bergon's philosophy in purpose to make explicit how the temporal duration articulates with the memory, the conscience and the perception. Right after, we'll demonstrate how the spatial time (which allows every human knowledge) became naturalized in Kant. In the end, we'll face the challenge of understanding the acts of the intuitive method, at the same time, we'll present our objective: a plausibility of intuition to the philosophical problemazation.

Abstract:
Language practitioners the world over have been struggling for professional recognition for many years. In many instances the emphasis has been on establishing measures like legislation to regulate the industry. However, many institutions have also realised that external regulation such as legislation is not enough and that language practitioners in general and text editors specifically needed an internal regulating mechanism. This mechanism was not just something internal to the industry but was more personal, and therefore internal to practitioners themselves. In this regard a properly designed code of ethics was regarded as an indispensable means of setting out to text editors what may be regarded as proper conduct in carrying out their work. No code of ethics for text editors in South Africa exists and text editors who are members of the South African Translators' Association (SATI) subscribe to the code for translators. This is an undesirable state of affairs as it is important for practitioners to feel that a code is specific to them and "belongs" to them in order for them to subscribe to it. More than that, because a code is part of an internal value system it is important for practitioners to internalise such a code for it to be effective. This study, aimed at the design of a code of ethics for text editors, therefore strove to achieve two aims. The first aim was to design a code of ethics for text editors with reference to existing codes in other related fields, gleaning common elements from them. The second aim was to involve a selection of practising text editors in the refinement of the draft code in order to finalise it, thus ensuring that the code would be acceptable to the people most affected by it. The result of the project was the establishment of a code that was acceptable to all the practitioners involved up to the conclusion of the project. This code will be of value in filling the vacuum in this branch of language practice where no ethical guidelines existed before.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the applicability of the photographic concept of the given moment, by Henri Cartier-Bresson, in the daily newspaper Folha de Londrina. Through a method that quantitatively identifies the presence of images that present characteristics of this concept and qualitatively analyzes the application of them. Images from the covers of 30 editions of the newspaper in question were collected and analyzed from February 22nd to March 28th, 2017. In order to substantiate the qualitative analysis and for the purposes to investigate the journalistic routine, interviews were conducted with photographers working in the newspaper and had their images selected for analysis. The theory of the photographer?s creative process by Boris Kossoy was used as a foundation, which dialogues with the philosophical concepts of Vilém Flusser and Arlindo Machado. Regarding the given moment it was approached aspects of the educational background and photographic work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, considered the projenitor of the concept, and about the translation of the term that diffused as the decisive moment, but was idealized by the photographer as the given moment. The results allows to affirm that the presence of the concept in the pages of the daily newspaper are scarce and conditioned more to the opportunity than the intensionality of applying it.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the nature and dynamics of U.S.-Iran relations during the Cold War under the leadership of U.S. President Richard Nixon, his adviser Henry Kissinger, and Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran. This revisionist account critically examines the popular view of Mohammad Reza Shah as a mere instrument of American strategies of containment during the Cold War. Relying on recently declassified American documents, British government papers, and the diaries, memoirs and oral histories of Iranian actors, this thesis restores agency to the shah as an autonomous Cold War actor and suggests that Iran evolved from a client to a partner of the United States under the Nixon Doctrine. This partnership was forged during Nixon’s first term in office between 1969 and 1972, as the United States embraced a policy of Iranian primacy in the Persian Gulf region. Thanks to a long-standing friendship with the president, the shah was able to exercise extraordinary influence in the Nixon White House. This partnership reached its peak during Nixon’s second term as the United States supported Iran’s regional primacy against the challenge from Iraq. The shah drew Nixon and Kissinger into Iran’s secret war against Iraq in Kurdistan in 1972, by portraying Iran’s long-standing regional conflict with Iraq as a Cold War confrontation with the Soviet-backed Ba’th regime in Baghdad. When the shah unilaterally decided to abandon the Kurds in a deal with Iraq’s Saddam Hussein in 1975, Kissinger had little choice but to acquiesce, despite the personal embarrassment and domestic recriminations that followed. The U.S.-Iran partnership declined following Watergate and Nixon’s resignation in 1974. In spite of the best efforts of the shah and Kissinger, between 1974 and 1976 the United States and Iran were unable to reach an agreement on U.S. nuclear exports to Iran. President Gerald Ford tried to impose a discriminatory nuclear agreement on Iran that was rejected by the shah because it violated Iran’s national sovereignty. Under Ford, the United States reverted to treating Iran as a client rather a partner of the United States.

Abstract:
AbstractThe introduction to the edited volume outlines the topics covered by the essays that follow and places them within historical and academic contexts. Turning for examples to several literary and non-literary texts, most notably the 1820s diaries of Edward Beck and Richard Henry Dana, Jr.’s Two Years Before the Mast (1840), it considers the differences and the continuities that prevail in shipboard environments across time, while also discussing the ways in which the human experience of time itself is complicated by seafaring. Particular attention is paid to the role of literary practices in shaping the experience of seafaring—to how such practices construct and reshape shipboard hierarchies, and also to how they help seafarers come to terms with the shipboard environment and with the ocean itself. While thus shaping shipboard cultures, the introduction argues, literary practices are also themselves affected—or ‘stained’—by the ocean environment.

Abstract:
The estimation of leak rates through steam generator tube crack is an important safety parameter. An assessment of the choking flow models in thermal-hydraulics code RELAP5 is performed and its applicability to predict choking flow rates through steam generator tube cracks is addressed. A RELAP5 nodalization was created to model experimental data from literature. It is found that both the Henry-Fauske and Ransom-Trapp models better predict choking mass flux for longer channels. As the length of a channel decreases the both models’ predictions diverge from each other. While RELAP5 has been shown to predict choking flow in large scale geometries, it is not suited well for small channel lengths. In the case of a more conservative approach, where over prediction of mass flux through short channels is best, the Henry-Fauske model would be most appropriate.

Abstract:
A code was developed in this study to predict the leakage of the leak before break (LBB). Various stagnation conditions were considered, including the subcooled water, the two-phase fluid and the overheated steam. Moreover, both the critical and noncritical flow was studied. The Henry-Fauske critical flow model was revised by a new phase transition point and the pressure drop due to friction and turns were modified. The code was verified by the comparison with the experimental data on the leakage of conventional pipes, artificial cracks and naturally occurring cracks, which shows a good agreement and this code has a higher precision than the existing codes. The influence of crack morphologies on LBB leakage was discussed, including the local roughness, the global roughness, the crack open displacement (COD) and the number of the corners. Besides, the dependence of the LBB leakage on stagnation enthalpy and back pressure was also investigated.

Abstract:
Narrative imagination creates a space of learning where contemporary and historic knowledge of designed place merge. This paperdiscusses how an instructor’s curation and narration of archival material can provoke design-students to imagine narratives and actively visualize processes humans use to construct, inhabit and adjust comfort in place. The concept of narrative imagination presented in this paper is informed by traditional narrative as Marie-Laure Ryan defines it her 2005 article, Narrative and the Split Condition of Digital Textuality: (The traditionalist school) “conceives narrative as an invariant core of meaning, a core that distinguishes narrative from other types of discourse, and gives it a trans-cultural, trans-historical, and trans-medial identity.”1 The work of Gerard Genette, Levi-Strauss, Roland Barthes, Jacques Derrida, Monica Fludernik, John Fiske, James Phelan, Henry Jenkins and others is also influential.2

The ability of nuclear power plant control and safety systems to detect a piping leak prior to breakage is a fundamental requirement of the leak-before-break concept. The design and assessment of leak-detection systems, therefore, requires the determination of through-wall crack leakage rates covering a significant range of operating and flow conditions. For the primary use case of pressurized water reactors, the coolant is subcooled liquid-phase water at high pressures and temperatures, and the leakage flow regimes can range from adiabatic flow boiling (“flashing”) with non-equilibrium vapor generation inside the crack to orifice flow of a subcooled liquid with vapor generation occurring outside of the pipe. The thermohydraulic Henry-Fauske model (with extensions) for non-equilibrium flashing flow through “tight cracks” has been implemented into LEAPOR. A primary driver in the development of LEAPOR has been that its Software Quality Assurance (SQA) requirements included evaluations for correctness, consistency, completeness, accuracy, source code readability, and testability. The new code should be prepared to successfully meet the criteria of formal SQA audits. The attributes of maintainability, portability, and extensibility also informed LEAPOR’s layered software architectural design. The paper presents the results of verification and validation studies carried out with LEAPOR where verification by benchmark comparisons to the results of an independently developed leak rate code and validation against experimental data are described.

Abstract:
As a part of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) development, the supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) Brayton cycle is considered as an alternative power conversion system to eliminate sodium-water reaction (SWR) from the current conventional steam Rankine cycle is utilized with SFR. The leakage flow of S-CO2 from turbo-machinery via seal becomes one of important issues since not only it influences the cycle efficiency due to parasitic loss but also it is important for evaluating the system safety under various operating conditions. Thus, a transient simulation for estimating the critical flow in a turbo-machinery seal is essential to predict the leakage flow rate and calculate the required total mass of working fluid in a S-CO2 power system. This paper briefly reviews the advantages of supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle relative to a typical steam Rankine cycle used in the Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor. In addition, this paper describes the test data using a CO2 critical flow experimental facility with three orifice configurations to model the flow resistance of a rotating shaft labyrinth seal. This data is used for validation of an existing transient analytical tool developed for transient hydraulic system analysis. Contained within this code is the analysis approach of Henry/Fauske from 1971 for two phase critical flow of one-component mixtures. This paper presents prediction of transient pressure, temperature, and flow profiles for critical and sub-critical flows of CO2 relative to blowdown test data to show that reasonable results are obtained. Similar analyses relative to test results of three orifice configurations are conducted and it shows that multiple orifices increase the time to equalize pressure in the blowdown system and therefore equates to higher flow resistance and lower leakage.

Abstract:
This paper describes a model for the cladding-coolant heat transfer of high burnup fuel during a Reactivity Initiated Accident (RIA) which is implemented in the fuel performance code FRAPTRAN 1.2. The minimum stable film boiling temperature, affected by the subcooling and the clad oxidation, is modeled by a modified Henry correlation. This accounts for the effects of thermal properties of the cladding surface on the transient temperature drop during liquid-solid contact. The transition boiling regime is described as the interpolation of the heat flux between two anchor points on the boiling curve: the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) and minimum stable film boiling. The CHF correlation is based on the Zuber hydrodynamic model multiplied by a subcooling factor. Frederking correlation is chosen to model the film boiling regime. The heat conduction through the oxide layer of the cladding surface of high burnup fuel is calculated by solving heat conduction equations with thermal properties of zirconia taken from MATPRO. This model is validated in the FRAPTRAN code for test cases of both high burnup and fresh test fuel rods including the burnup level (0–56 MW d/kg), peak fuel enthalpy deposit (70–190 cal/g), degree of subcooling (0–80 °C), and extent of oxidation (0–25 micron). The modified code demonstrates the capability of differentiating between the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) and none-DNB cases. The predicted peak cladding temperature (PCT) and duration of DNB achieves generally good agreement with the experimental data. It is found that the cladding surface oxidation of high burnup fuel causes an early rewetting of cladding or suppresses DNB due to two factors: 1) Thick zirconia layer may delay the heat conducted to the surface while keeping the surface heat transfer in the most effective nucleate boiling regime. 2) The transient liquid-solid contact resulting from vapor breaking down would cause a lower interface temperature for an oxidized surface, essentially raises the minimum stable film boiling temperature.

Abstract:
The central topic of this paper is the complex relationship between migrants and the global city, which has created a strong hypermobility of goods and people. There are new actors in the urbane scene: immigrants provide labor in many areas, but they are particularly invisible at the main decision-making levels, especially in those concerning the city design. They are subjected to discrimination: first of all as city users and also as proponents of urban and architectural projects. Our cities are not able to answer the "supply of city" of those who live in, that means they do not fully answer to the people needs and desires. Consequently, the weakest and most vulnerable citizens don’t fully enjoy their right to the city. This right has been presented by Henri Lefebvre around the 70s. According to the French sociologist everyone should enjoy the "right to urban life", that is the possibility to satisfy their aspirations in terms of political, social and environmental impacts in the city.

Abstract:
Choking flow plays an integral part not only in the engineered safeguards of a nuclear power plant (NPP), but also to everyday operation. Current NPP steam generators operate on the leak-before-break approach. The ability to predict and estimate a leak rate through a steam generator tube crack is an important safety parameter. Knowledge of the maximum flow rate through a crack in the steam generator tube allows the coolant inventory to be designed accordingly while limiting losses during loss of coolant accidents. Here an assessment of the choking flow models in thermal-hydraulics code RELAP5/MOD3.3 is performed and its suitability to predict choking flow rates through small axial cracks of the steam generator tubes is evaluated based on previously collected experimental data. Three sets of the data were studied in this work which corresponds to steam generator tube crack sample 1, 2, and 3. Each sample has a wall thickness, channel length (L), of 1.285 mm to 1.3 mm. Exit areas of these samples are 5.22 mm2, 9.05 mm2, and 1.72 mm2 respectively. Samples 1 and 2 have the same flow channel length to hydraulics diameter ratio (L/D) of 2.9 whereas sample 3 has a L/D of 6.5. A pressure differential of 6.8 MPa was applied across the samples with a range of subcooling from 5 °C to 60 °C. Flow rates through these samples were modeled using the thermal-hydraulic system code RELAP5/MOD3.3. Simulation’s results are compared to experimental values and modeling techniques are discussed. It is found that both the Henry-Fauske (H-F) and Ransom-Trapp (R-T) models better predict choking mass flux for longer channels. As the channel length decreases both models’ predictions diverge from each other. While RELAP5/MOD3.3 has been shown to predict choking flow in large scale geometries, further investigation of data sets need to be done to determine if it is suited well for small channel lengths.

Abstract:
An accurate prediction of a critical flow discharged from a pressurized pipe system is of most importance in such a safety analysis of nuclear power plants, since it provides the transient boundary conditions during the depressurization transients initiated by a pipe break in primary or secondary systems and during the over-pressurization transients resulting in a relief of coolant through valves. Mass and energy discharge through the opening of pressure boundary affects the system thermal hydraulic responses, that is, phase changes and flow distribution in the system, and the mass inventory remaining in the system necessary to remove core decay heat of a nuclear reactor. Therefore, the safety significance relating to the critical flow led to a development of various empirical and mechanistic critical flow models. However, the accuracies of these models are still in question especially during two-phase critical flow condition. A good example of that is a homogeneous equilibrium model (HEM). The HEM is the basis of several system codes, such as early versions of RELAP, for nuclear loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA). The major non-equilibrium phenomena that are ignored in the HEM are vapor bubble nucleation and interface heat, mass, and momentum transfer. Henry-Fauske empirically handled non-equilibrium vapor generation by introducing a non-equilibrium parameter that allows only a fraction of the equilibrium vapor generation to occur. This approach boils down in essence to a correlation of the deviation between the measured flow rate and the prediction from the HEM: The details of the flow path do not have to be worked out and only needs to know the upstream conditions. However, if we treat non-equilibrium phenomena with this model, it requires an empirical database of the non-equilibrium parameters or their correlations that are so far unknown. Further, because the coefficients are not applied separately to the subcooled liquid and two-phase mixture, we have not been able to treat the non-equilibrium phenomena with the phase change properly. For this reason, we propose the non-equilibrium parameters for subcooled liquid and two-phase mixture, respectively, and then we adopt their combinations according to the flow conditions through the phase change process using the RELAP5/MOD3 code. In addition, we discuss the assessment results of Marviken LBLOCA tests using these non-equilibrium parameter sets with those from the non-equilibrium model by Trapp-Ransom and Chung et al.
