Abstract:
Abstract: Cabeço da Mina (Muge, Portugal) is a historical site of Portuguese archaeology. Discovered in 1939, it was there that the first excavations of an open-air Lower Palaeolithic site took place, playing an important role in the discussion regarding the chrono-cultural assignment of the prehistoric finds known at that time in Muge. In addition to the Acheulean artefacts exhumed in stratigraphy (that have never been extensively published), which are stored in the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto, there is another assemblage from Cabeço da Mina in the Geological Museum. The latter resulted from collections made by Henri Breuil and Georges Zbyszewski when they visited the site, with this paper reporting the data from the techno-typological study of its Large Cutting Tools – 41 pieces, distributed between cleavers on flake, handaxes, trihedral picks and other macro-tools. Overall, these artefacts were defined through expeditious operational sequences, which is considered to be linked to the careful selection of the blank, the judicious exploitation of its intrinsic features, and the degree of conceptualisation that underlies their production. Keywords: Lower Tagus, Acheulean, Large Cutting Tools (LCTs), Chaîne opératoire, Blank, Conceptualisation.
