Hempelmann, Christian F. "True German and phony English laughter: Schmidt-Hidding was still Schmidt." European Journal of Humour Research 5, no. 4 (December 31, 2017): 179. http://dx.doi.org/10.7592/ejhr2017.5.4.hempelmann.

Abstract:
Schmidt-Hidding’s (b. 1903, d. 1967) lexical field study on the area of Humor und Witz [humor and wit/jokes] (1963b) receives attention in humor research to this day, especially in German-speaking countries. His diamond-shaped illustration of the two dimensions of the field of humor, not least in its aim to distinguish “earthy” German from “courteous” English humor, has become well-known. In view of this continued interest in the final write-up of Schmidt-Hidding’s work on humor (1963a, 1963b), in which he consistently ignores his earlier related publications under the name of Schmidt, this paper aims to discourage researchers from basing their work on it for two reasons. The more important one is the flawed, or at least muddled and definitely outdated, methodology of his study. The more delicate one that is focused on here is that the motivation for and the ideological direction of the study are strongly influenced by its author’s National Socialist ideology, which Schmidt-Hidding had possibly assumed for opportunistic reasons and abandoned after World War II. I will first document this ideological alignment with National Socialism from Schmidt’s earlier work, basically a prelude to his Schlüsselwörter (1963a). Then I’ll briefly present the methodological flaws, to the degree that Schmidt-Hidding was sufficiently explicit about his method to make that possible. This approach of interpreting a complex issue in its historical and social contexts, along with showing what the issue is in contrast to analogous issues, is the important research agenda that Davies brought to humor research.

Abstract:
AbstractSixty five TD-1 scans of the magnetic silicon star HD 170000 have been investigated using the method for lightcurves analysis proposed by Hempelmann and Schöneich. The fluxes originating in two spots and in the rest surface of the star have been separated. The conclusion is that the whole stellar surface is strongly peculiar. Spot 1 is a region with the same peculiarity as the rest surface, but strengthened, whereas spot 2 shows additional peculiarities with respect to spot 1 and the rest surface.

Abstract:

Soare, Nicoleta Andreea. "Cartoons in Romanian humorous news." European Journal of Humour Research 8, no. 2 (July 18, 2020): 49. http://dx.doi.org/10.7592/ejhr2020.8.2.soare.

Abstract:
Studying cartoons in Romanian humorous news is a great way to underline the diversity of humour’s mechanisms and construction. The common topic of cartoons in Romanian media is politics, but there are also a great number of cartoons exploring subjects such as art, science, society or famous people. Unlike verbal humour, wherein incongruities are text-based, in cartoons, incongruities can emerge through the interaction of image and text, between two elements in the image, or even between the texts in the balloons (Hempelmann & Samson 2008). The present study aims at analysing how humour emerges differently, depending on their topic, in cartoons created by the Romanian humorous media websites Times New Roman and Academia Catavencu, as these have been the two of the most controversial humorous news websites for quite some time. I intend to argue that, when it comes to political cartoons, the methods of humour are quite complex, equally relying on the image and the text, using polysemy, paronymy or syllepsis to create humour, while cartoons about society or gossip are usually based on implicitness and exaggeration, mostly found in images and symbols, as the targeted topics or people do not require such a complex background in order to make readers laugh. I have also observed that cartoons that rely less on text have more powerful symbols, which are full of various significations that help the readers make all the necessary connections to correctly interpret the image.

Abstract:
Scholz, Andreas, Noboru Kuboyama, Gunter Hempelmann, and Werner Vogel. Complex blockade of TTX-resistant Na+ currents by lidocaine and bupivacaine reduce firing frequency in DRG neurons. J. Neurophysiol. 79: 1746–1754, 1998. Mechanisms of blockade of tetrodotoxin-resistant (TTXr) Na+ channels by local anesthetics in comparison with the sensitivity of tetrodotoxin-sensitive (TTXs) Na+ channels were studied by means of the patch-clamp technique in neurons of dorsal root ganglions (DRG) of rat. Half-maximum inhibitory concentration (IC50) for the tonic block of TTXr Na+ currents by lidocaine was 210 μmol/l, whereas TTXs Na+ currents showed five times lower IC50 of 42 μmol/l. Bupivacaine blocked TTXr and TTXs Na+ currents more potently with IC50 of 32 and 13 μmol/l, respectively. In the inactivated state, TTXr Na+ channel block by lidocaine showed higher sensitivities (IC50 = 60 μmol/l) than in the resting state underlying tonic blockade. The time constant τ1 of recovery of TTXr Na+ channels from inactivation at −80 mV was slowed from 2 to 5 ms after addition of 10 μmol/l bupivacaine, whereas the τ2 value of ∼500 ms remained unchanged. The use-dependent block of TTXr Na+ channels led to a progressive reduction of current amplitudes with increasing frequency of stimulation, which was ≤53% block at 20 Hz in 10 μmol/l bupivacaine and 81% in 100 μmol lidocaine. The functional importance of the use-dependent block was confirmed in current-clamp experiments where 30 μmol/l of lidocaine or bupivacaine did not suppress the single action potential but clearly reduced the firing frequency of action potentials again with stronger potency of bupivacaine. Because it was found that TTXr Na+ channels predominantly occur in smaller sensory neurons, their blockade might underlie the suppression of the sensation of pain. Different sensitivities and varying proportions of TTXr and TTXs Na+ channels could explain the known differential block in spinal anesthesia. We suggest that the frequency reduction at low local anesthetic concentrations may explain the phenomenon of paresthesia where sensory information are suppressed gradually during spinal anesthesia.

Abstract:
AbstractThe List of Derisible Situations (LDS; Proyer, Hempelmann and Ruch, List of Derisible Situations (LDS), University of Zurich, 2008) consists of 102 different occasions for being laughed at. They were retrieved in a corpus study and compiled into the LDS. Based on this list, information on the frequency and the intensity with which people recall being laughed at during a given time-span (12 months in this study) can be collected. An empirical study (N = 114) examined the relations between the LDS and the fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia), the joy of being laughed at (gelotophilia), and the joy of laughing at others (katagelasticism; Ruch and Proyer this issue). More than 92% of the participants recalled having been laughed at at least once over the past 12 months. Highest scores were found for experiencing an embarrassing situation, chauvinism of others or being laughed at for doing something awkward or clumsy. Gelotophobia, gelotophilia, and katagelasticism were related about equally to the recalled frequency of events of being laughed at (with the lowest relation to katagelasticism). Gelotophobia, gelotophilia, and katagelasticism yielded a distinct and plausible pattern of correlations to the frequency of events of being laughed at. Gelotophobes recalled the situations of being laughed at with a higher intensity than others. Thus, the fear of being laughed at exists to a large degree independently from actual experiences of being laughed at, but is related to a higher intensity with which these events are experienced.
