Abstract:
Summary Specimens of the snails Anisus centrifugops were infected with two types of cercariae relating to the genus Diplodiscus, differing from each other by body and organ sizes were found in a pond in the territory of Vladivostok (Primorsky region, Russia). Further study of their morphology and life cycles allowed us to establish that these flukes belong to Diplodiscus japonicus (Yamaguti, 1936) and D. mehrai Pande, 1937. Morphological and molecular data confirmed the validity of D. japonicus which had previously been synonymized with D. amphichrus Tubangui, 1933 and D. mehrai Pande, 1937.

Abstract:
Summary Three species of digenetic trematodes are redescribed based on specimens collected from the intestine of freshwater fishes of Hastinapur and Meerut (U.P.), India: Allocreadium handiai (Pande, 1937) Madhavi, 1980 (Allocreadioidea: Allocreadiidae) from Mystus tengara (Hamilton, 1822) (Siluri-formes: Bagridae), Genarchopsis goppo Ozaki, 1925 (Hemiuroidea: Derogenidae) and Phyllodistomum chauhani Motwani & Srivastava, 1961 (Plagiorchioidea: Gorgoderidae) from Channa punctata (Bloch, 1793) (Perciformes: Channidae). The three species were subjected to morphological, morphometric and molecular analyses. The morphological study revealed that A. handiai, G. goppo and P. chauhani can be distinguished by their congeners on the basis of their morphology. Partial nucleotide sequences of the 28S ribosomal RNA gene were obtained from the three trematode species and deposited in the GenBank. A phylogenetic reconstruction based on the 28S rRNA gene placed the three studied species within their respective families and their validity is discussed. For the first time molecular data of newly collected material of these species from India were used for confirmation of their validity and to assess their phylogenetic relationships.

During the 1950s, a team of Göttingen sociologists led by Helmut Plessner undertook a systematic survey of all faculty who taught at German university-level institutions during one or more of eleven selected sample years between 1864 and 1953. Drawing upon university catalogues (Vorlesungsverzeichnisse), scholarly handbooks (Minerva, Kürschners, Poggendorfs), and a variety of encyclopedias, members of the Göttingen group collected biographical and career data for almost twenty-four thousand individuals, which they entered by hand (though much of it in code) on manuscript sheets that were preserved at the Max Planck Institut für Bildungsforschung in Berlin.

Abstract:
As head trauma becomes more firmly associated with American football, research has focused on improving the impact performance of protective headgear. Since helmet use became mandatory in 1939–1940, both helmet design and laboratory methods used to evaluate helmet impact performance have evolved. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, this article analyzes the impact results from laboratory evaluations of helmet performance, including a look at the evolution of protective headgear performance in football. In total, 35 separate studies conducted between 1975 and 2017 were used to examine current testing methodologies and reported impact results from headgear performance laboratory assessments. This review showed that the evolution in helmet design over the last 50 years has resulted in a decrease in linear and rotational acceleration of an impacted headform. The most common laboratory methods used to reconstruct football-specific head impacts included (1) linear drop methods, (2) pendulum methods, and (3) pneumatic ram methods. Each method provided greater understanding of helmet impact performance, helmet design, and use in football, with each method having specific limitations in the evaluation of protective headgear performance.

Abstract:
The composition of the aurora borealis became a subject of scientific interest with the introduction of spectroscopy, but for a long time the aurora refused to reveal its secrets. After fifty years of research, the origin of the dominant green line of wavelength 5577 ÅÅ was still a mystery. Only in 1912 did progress finally begin to occur in the understanding of the aurora, a field of research which appealed in particular to Norwegian scientists. Prominent among them was Lars Vegard (1880––1963), who in 1923 suggested a new picture of the upper atmosphere and an explanation of the green line in terms of excitations of frozen nitrogen dust particles. Although apparently confirmed by cryogenic experiments, Vegard's theory was challenged by the Canadian physicist John McLellan (1867––1935) who in 1925, together with his postdoctoral student Gordon Shrum (1896––1985), reproduced the line in experiments with helium-oxygen mixtures. This is the story of how the enigma of the green auroral line was finally resolved and explained by the quantum theory of atoms, namely as a transition between two metastable states of oxygen. It is also the story of two of the period's leading specialists in auroral spectroscopy, their rivalry, and different approaches to the study of the northern light.

Full text
Abstract:
The m.c.d. spectrum of the oxidized state of hydrogenase from Megasphaera elsdenii has been measured at liquid-helium temperatures. This oxidation state of the enzyme displays a characteristic rhombic e.p.r. signal with g-values of 2.101, 2.052 and 2.005 assigned previously to a [4Fe-4S]3+ cluster as in oxidized HiPIP (high-potential iron-sulphur protein) [Van Dijk, Grande, Mayhew & Veeger (1980) Eur. J. Biochem. 107, 251-261]. The low-temperature m.c.d. spectrum shows no features attributable to an oxidized four-iron cluster of the HiPIP type, but does reveal broad, positive peaks at 460 and 730 nm, which magnetize in a manner untypical of a spin S = 1/2 cluster with g-values close to 2. The m.c.d. spectrum is most closely similar to that of dye-oxidized P-clusters known in the enzyme nitrogenase. It is therefore proposed that the rhombic e.p.r. spectrum at a g-value close to 2 arises from an m.c.d.-silent radical species that may be related chemically to the cysteine persulphide species, RS-S., recently found in the hexacyanoferrate-oxidized seven-iron ferredoxin of Azotobacter vinelandii [Morgan, Stephens, Devlin, Stout, Melis & Burgess (1984) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 81, 1931-1935].

Abstract:
In 2008, the internationally renowned neurologist and university professor Helmut Johannes Bauer died at the age of 93 years. In the numerous obituaries and tributes to him, the years between 1933 and 1945 are either omitted or simplified; the Nazi past of Helmut Bauer has hardly been explored. Based on original documents dating from the Third Reich and the early Federal Republic of Germany as well as relevant secondary writings, Bauer's life before 1945 was traced to gain knowledge of his exact activities and tasks during the Second World War. Bauer was actively involved in Nazi crimes. He was a member of the so-called Künsberg special command of the SS and also worked in a prominent position at the Institute for Microbiology as well as for the Foreign Department of the Reich Physicians' Chamber. After World War II, Bauer underwent denazification and, like many others, was able to pursue his further medical career undisturbed, building on the contacts he had already made during the Nazi period.

Abstract:
Helmuth Plessner’s The Delayed Nation was a key text in the Sonderweg narrative that dominated the writing of German history from the later 1950s to the mid-1980s: the idea that the disaster of the Third Reich and the Holocaust could be explained in terms of Germany’s problematic path to modernity since the Middle Ages. The book had originally been published under a rather prolix title in Zurich in 1935 when Plessner was an émigré in the Netherlands. It made little impact then, and only attracted attention from 1959 under a short title which seemed to capture the essence of the emerging left-liberal view of the disastrous course of German history. The more accessible title in reality masked an extremely complex book which did not sit easily with the social history preoccupations of the avant-garde of post-war German historians. Plessner’s history was a narrative of intellectual degeneration that placed philosophy at the heart of the German problem. Plessner’s book can only be fully understand in relation to his own philosophical and political concerns in the 1920s. Its impact in the 1960s and after derives almost entirely from its suggestive and eye-catching title.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Twenty years and a day after Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender, Hanover county administrator Helmut Janssen declared to an assembly of East Prussian expellee leaders that Germany was still destined to recover all of the territory it had possessed in 1937. One day, he claimed, the roughly twelve million ethnic Germans expelled from the lost eastern territories and eastern Europe in the wake of the war would return home. Although by 1965 this political goal seemed “further away than ever before,” he repeated an expellee declaration of March 1960, which pledged that all expellees “still want to return to the Heimat [homeland]—now, in the future, and forever.”

Abstract:
SummaryThe trematode Amurotrema dombrowskajae Achmerow, 1959, is the type and the only species of the paramphistomoid genus Amurotrema Achmerow, 1959. This intestinal parasite of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) was introduced with host to the Volga River Delta. These naturalized trematodes were found by the authors in 2014 – 2015. In the present study the phylogenetic position of Amurotrema dombrowskajae is analysed using partial 28S rDNA nucleotide sequences. Bayesian inference and Maximum Likelihood analyses place this species in a clade with representatives of the family Cladorchiidae - Megalodiscus temperatus (Stafford, 1905) and Indosolenorchis hirudinaceus Crusz, 1951. Thus, molecular data are consistent with the traditional view on the position of A. dombrowskajae in this family.

Abstract:
Summary Presented study is part of a project aimed at identifying entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) species and analysing their distribution in various habitats of Poland. Here, an attempt was undertaken to determine intraspecific variability of nematodes of the species Steinernema feltiae isolated from seven different localities in central and southern Poland. Molecular characteristic and phylogenetic analysis was performed based on nucleotide sequences in the ITS region. Research on the occurrence of EPNs in Poland have been conducted since the 1990s but there is still no data verified genetically, as well as data on the intraspecific variability of isolates Steinernema feltiae. This paper reports initial results of intraspecific variability Steinernema feltiae in Poland.
