Abstract:
Rhododendrons in numerous gardens in Central Europe are frequently endangered by adverse summer drought periods associated with the climate change. Therefore, in this work drought-resistance strategies in recent genotypes of these highly aesthetic shrubs were investigated. Dehydrated Rhododendron groenlandicum ‘Helma’, R. obtusum ‘Michiko’ and R. hybridum ‘Polarnacht’ showed high initial stomatal conductances (gS), after few days steeply falling to the stable minimum at ca. 20, 85 and 70% leaf relative water content (RWC), respectively. Except of ‘Polarnacht’, they had relatively large specific leaf area and ‘Michiko’ also free proline accumulation. On the other hand, R. repens ‘Scarlet Wonder’ and R. hybridum ‘Red Jack’ started with half gS values, continuously declining 1.5–2 fold longer compared to the first group of genotypes (RWC of ca. 60 and 75%, respectively). Both produced relatively thick leaves but did not show any osmotic adjustment. Among observed drought-resistance strategies, lower and longer period active transpiration with stomata sensitive to the water loss, as found in R. repens ‘Scarlet Wonder’ and R. × hybridum ‘Red Jack’, were accepted as the most effective for drought-affected rhododendron plantations.

Abstract:
The 12th International Conference on Polymers and Organic Chemistry (POC'06) was held in Okazaki, Japan, from 2-7 July 2006 and was attended by nearly 200 participants from 20 different countries. This was the second time that POC was held in Japan, the first time was in 1990 (1982, Lyon, France; 1984, Lancaster, UK; 1986, Jerusalem, Israel; 1988, Barcelona, Spain; 1990, Kyoto, Japan; 1994, Venice, Italy; 1996, Wroclaw, Poland; 1998, Maa'ale Hachamisha, Israel; 2000, Tianjin, China; 2002, San Diego, USA; 2004, Prague, Czech Republic). The aim of this series of symposia is to bring together chemists from different chemical fields to define and discuss the most recent developments in the areas of polymer-supported reagents, polymeric catalysts, polymers in medicine and biochemistry, polymers for separations, electro- and light-sensitive functional polymers, polymers for environmental protection, processes within functional polymers, and so on. Plenary lectures were provided by Profs. Yoshio Okamoto (Nagoya University, Japan) and Jean M. J. Fréchet (University of California, Berkeley, USA). Along with the plenary lectures, nine invited lectures featured recent advances in the field of polymer-based chemistry in organic synthesis by David E. Bergbreiter, Kuiling Ding, Shu Kobayashi, Yoon-Sik Lee, Helma Wennemers, Pradeep K. Dhal, Toshihide Inoue, Eiji Yashima, and Peter A. G. Cormack. These lectures, as well as 27 oral presentations of the selected papers, exhibited the strength, diversity, and novelty with which this scientific field is being practiced. In addition, there were 55 poster presentations.Ten articles contributed by the lecturers and the conference chairs of POC'06 appear in this issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry in order to provide a summary of last summer's conference.Shinichi ItsunoPOC'06 Co-chairYasuhiro UozumiPOC'06 Co-chair and Conference Editor

Abstract:
The paper discusses a tournament-helm from Lullingstone Church, Kent, which was identified as ‘English … of the first quarter of the sixteenth century’ by the late Sir James Mann in a paper read at a meeting of the Society, at which it was exhibited, on 22 October 1931. It was not then noticed that the helm is struck twice with the well-known mark of an armourer who was working for the Habsburg Court in Brussels in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. A possible identification of the owner of the mark is given together with a reassessment of a group of related helms from funerary achievements in this country once thought to be English.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study novel series of hydrogels, based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), itaconic acid (IA) and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylates (PEGDMA) (of varying molecular weight and concentration) were prepared by free radical crosslinking copolymerization. Preliminary hemocompatibility characterization of hydrogels obtained by hemolytic activity assay indicated good compatibility with blood. Preliminary biocompatibility characterization of P(HEMA/IA/PEGDMA) hydrogels, done by the cytotoxicity assays using the HeLa cell line revails that the cell viability of all samples was the range of 97?100%, with no significant decrease in cell viability with the change of PEGDMA molecular weight and concentration. Swelling studies were conducted for all P(HEMA/IA/PEGDMA) samples in a physiological pH and temperature range and network parameters were determined. Swelling studies showed pH sensitive behaviour, typical for anionic hydrogels, and temperature dependent swelling. The effects of concentration of PEGDMA component on hydrogel swelling properties depend on the PEGDMA molecular weight. The samples with 550PEGDMA show different swelling capacities when 550PEGDMA content is changed, whereas for P(HEMA/IA/875PEGDMA) samples there was practically no difference in equilibrium degree of swelling, qe ,with varying 875PEGDMA content, which trend is the same as in the case of qe versus pH dependences. It was concluded that P(HEMA/IA/PEGDMA) hydrogels show good potential to be used as biomedical materials.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A taxonomic review of species and intraspecific taxa of the Astragalus L. section Helmia Bunge is presented. We treat the section Helmia in a traditional, narrow scope, including only 9 species and subspecies: A. helmii Fisch. ex DC., A. tergeminus (Knjaz., Kulikov et E. G. Philippov) Knjaz., A. permiensis C. A. Mey. ex Rupr., A. depauperatus Ledeb. (= A. chakassiensis Polozhij), A. kasachstanicus Golosk. subsp. kasachstanicus, A. kasachstanicus subsp. coloratus Knjaz., A. gregorii B. Fedtsch. et Basil. (= A. tuvinicus Timokhina), A. heptapotamicus Sumnev., A. ionae Palib. ex Gontsch. et Popov. With regard to the other 16 species of sect. Helmia in its widest sense, as accepted in the monograph by D. Podlech and Sh. Zarre (2013), we believe it more correct to attribute them to other sections. The rank of A. helmii var. tergeminus Knjaz., Kulikov et E. G. Philippov is raised to the species, A. tergeminus (Knjaz., Kulikov et E. G. Philippov) Knjaz. It is shown that A. gregorii is a priority name of A. tuvinicus. The epitype of A. permiensis C. A. Mey. ex Rupr. is designated. An identification key and a map of distribution for all species and subspecies of Astragalus sect. Helmia are presented.
